I had always thought that Astanga Yoga was Patanjali Yoga form Yoga Sutra, i.e. the eight limbs and at least 1600 years old. You're probably talking about Pattabhie Joy's yoga??? By the way, Vivekananda never did an asana series. And what about the Ha-Tha Yoga Pradipdika from the 14th century, that's not where the postures come from? And what about Boris Sacharov?

yes ashtanga yoga of Jois is not that of Patanjali! the asanas do come from a range of tantric texts and then some innovations at the turn of the 20th century. Vivekananda indeed not only didn’t practice asana but was actively against them!
