Paul is a true student of guitar. Some of the virtuoso players of the 80s kinda peaked and play the same material and style, Paul continues to improve and evolve. Every video I see him in he is demonstrating a new music style. Plus he has immaculate techniques and a ridiculously sharp ear combined with an encyclopedic knowledge of chords and scales. He should consider either a complex concept album or a piece for the orchestra.
Remember when Paul had that ad in Guitar Player back in the '80s where he was like, "Play this until it sounds like a baseball card stuck in the spokes of your bicycle!"?
Paul was my teacher in "86, he played those Epiphone guitars all the time. He used to paint them day glo colors and put Kahlers on them. I always wanted one but I'm a lefty and cold never find one.
@@russelrenznerosa8969 yeah, later on he did. When he taught me he was still young and unknown besides the LA scene. Like 86 to 87. Paul and Bruce both used Kahlers at that time. So did I, lol.
Sacrifice has to be one of the best, but most underrated Racer X tunes out there. I remember always playing it as the first track on my old iPod on the way to college, University, the bus stop. Wherever, for years. Paul is the man.
I love Sacrifice so much and Second Heat in general but I feel like almost their entire discography is overshadowed by Technical Difficulties and Scarified
I used to go see Paul at a lot of Pittsburgh clubs back in the day. Even as a keyboard player who never picked up a guitar I could appreciate the work this man put in to his craft...just amazing!
Paul is shredding his butt off here! It’s awesome to hear that he still can match his former self. Nowadays he’s a widdely widdely blues man. I wonder if he’ll set complete musical domination in his sights during the next ten years of his continued musical growth.
Paul practicing Racer X again, and not any song but Sacrifice from Second Heat, shredding those magical arpeggios in the intro, including the major sweep by Bruce! Love it!
Talent is a myth. Skill on an instrument is simply a function of how long you've been playing it. Paul started very young. So did Eddie Van Halen and probably most of the greats. By the time they were adults they probably already had over a decade of playing under their belts.
When he gets old and is in the senior home the residents will need wheel chairs that rock. You know, so they can rock n roll 😜 Will be the best concert of their lifetime...even at half speed 👍😎💯
This is the first few bars of "Sacrifice". This whole thing Paul is playing here actually has a HARMONY guitar part (Bruce). Yep, seeing Racer X live in the 80's must've been guitar heaven. People like Rocco Pezzin are keeping the spirit of this music alive.
He does it a little towards the end of his first Intense Rock video in the Arpeggios section. He has said before that sweep picking isn't really his thing though - he prefers to string skip or tap his arpeggios. Cool to see him doing it here though.
Paul obviously still has the skills. I just wish he actually used them!!!! We need Paul to Shred. That's where he shines!! That's where he actually is a guitar GOD!!!
It's only a matter of practice for him, his hands and mind are still firing on all cylinders, when he wants to. I agree, he should shred more, you just don't take the best alternate-picking in the business, and a big part of what made you, and throw it in the garbage for a slide and more bluesy-jazz stuff. It's ok to mix it up but his percussive, thundering shred should always be there. And Paul is perfectly capable of playing vocal's melodies without the slide.
@@anonssr9514 You know why the people online love shredding so much? Because they can't do it. He can do it, but he enjoys different things now. It makes sense.
He was sweep picking before h started working on his string skipping arpeggios. His old VHS tutorials even have sweep picking patterns. And he was/still is great at it!
Don't know if you noticed but he changed the pick-up's position 4 times in this short video. For not talking about the slide, perfectly smooth transition. Paul has "blinding speed" and "precision" in his DNA, lol.
Yes I’ve had the same conversations with other guitar players, when Paul was on the G3 tour with Joe and John, people in line are like “ who this Paul guy?” To which I replied “your new favourite guitarist “. I got Paul’s set list that night too! Pure magic!
Thanks man and yes Paul Gilbert is the man one of my friends went to eat with him and my friend said that he is the best of the best he so kind very friendly 🤘🤘👍👍
@@ROCKERSLASH1 Very, i still have his plectrum, he is so tall. I was only 17 when we met them after the MR Big show we went to their hotel. Eric Martin bought me a drink at the bar and i chatted to his wife Stacey. Pat Torpey was also lovely, and i am sad that he is no longer here,

He can pick up the slide quicker than I can play a note.
Lol
This man was created in a lab ...no doubts
I don't understand how creating someone in a lab would get any better results?
He was created in a room by practicing. Sorry
@@cleftturnip7774 ? how would it not

the fox will lose his hair, but he will never lose his tricks... Grande Paul!

Franco Ledesma you're lucky. We're known to be very shy.
0:33 the switch into the slide was so fucking clean
That was dope
I came to appreciate Paul's shredding but ended up being more impressed by that lol
I didn't even saw it the first time! I was just like "wait where tf did that thing came from??"
Had to double click back to watch again 😳😳
He keeps it on magnet attached to his guitar
This guy looks like a math teacher, but is actually God himself.
Yes, that's because MATH is the language of the universe 😇
He's matured, which is a good thing because not everyone does.
him: has loads of hollow bodys
also him: I'm going to shred and sweep pick
He’s secretly blues fan..
My favourite thing about PG is his shredding isnt just mindless noodling for the sake of it, its melodic af and actually nice to listen to
The first time I actually heard the term "noodling" was from Paul in his old Starlicks VHS back in the day. I always thought that was funny.
I think he just melted my face off with that shred
Remember when Paul had that ad in Guitar Player back in the '80s where he was like, "Play this until it sounds like a baseball card stuck in the spokes of your bicycle!"?
Yep!
Was that the 123 454 32123 454 321 alternate picking rif exercise?
Yes, I remember that. 🎸
The epitome of guitar playing. This is just guitar mastery right here
Paul was my teacher in "86, he played those Epiphone guitars all the time. He used to paint them day glo colors and put Kahlers on them. I always wanted one but I'm a lefty and cold never find one.

Paul was born to play guitar..insane talent
There is no doubt about that...
In my book, he's one of the greatest in history...

The first arpeggios in Scarified are sweep picked in the recording, but Paul changed them later to use string skiping

He does it in the Prelude and Fugue in D minor video as well, from the Space Ship One video collection
