My heart will always go out to these third-generation Camaro I love them this one is in beautiful shape
I had an 86' Iroc in my mid twenties. I should have lost my license a hundred times over with it. On the interstate I was cruising 130 -140mph often. Stable, great handling car.
I live in germany so the speed doesnt matter xD but i first i have to own such a car. I like this camaro a Lot i found one for 5.000€ but i need i to do something and need to paint it new. But i dont Know how easy and cheap it is to get some spare Parts. Can you Tell me that? I dont know if its worth to do that. Im 20 and studying, i can afford the money but the rest shouldnt be that extensive. I already have a cheap car for the Winter and now im looking for a cool one in Summer. Maybe this could be the one of my dream
Hope youre talking about a hardtop version... I was praying to god doing 85 in my 91 t top as it was creaking like old floorboards in a crappy apartment
@@lorddoggo4353 Mine was a T-top too. No doubt the car was a typical bucket of bolts GM product. Hard to tell the difference between the floor boards cracking or the dash because the screws were constantly falling out of it. But when you are young and dumb it's easy to not pay attention to those things.
Are they good first cars because I've always dreamed of having a 3rd gen Camaro Z28 or standard as my first car
@@UnholyKaizen You can definitely get one cheap enough to be in the "first car" price range. The things you should keep in mind are as follows- Reliability, these are commonly equipped with a 305ci v8 that was one of the worst gm v8 engines made. Depends on previous owners maintenance performed as always with any car but for the most part I would say ANYONE that gets one of these cars should have the resources to work on it as a project vehicle. You arent going to find one you can have as a daily driver and make it to work everyday. They are low cost for parts but need tools and time to replace them. Auto repair shops only rape you so if you cant fix it it wont be good first car. Also if you live where winters are snow and ice or even wet a lot- these cars are UNABLE to drive in ice and snow. Its not a good driver bad driver thing. These cars WILL NOT drive on ice or snow at all. You gotta be careful enough keeping the car straight in the rain but ice, its all over.
Back when this body style first came out there was nothing that looked this good especially in this price range, it was very different back than. There's so many sporty cars out today, even 4-door cars are sporty but not at all back then. I'm a fan, then and still today.
It was my favourite car growing up
Mine too and still is I've had 4 of em
I’m working on my 82 z28 myself. I’m not familiar with working on cars at all. Bought some manuals and other things to help me learn and seeing a video like this is super informative on its history! This was an awesome video, great job!
Good luck on your project!
You can find the gm shop manuals on ebay I got my 84 manual for 16 bucks and my sons 91 book for 35.
Check out fireball mullet, he has some amazing videos on how to do things
Good luck I'm working on a 86 irocz
I've owned my 87 iroc since 2002 and in the process of restoring it so I can definitely appreciate ur review n the condition of the car great video
I want to get a 3rd gen camaro and 350 swap it, do you think it’d be a good first car to learn how to work on cars and have some fun
@@NoName-up9ed YES of course, maybe a Ls swap would be a good idea too
Maro4life yeah I was thinking that but the LS series engines are pricy haha
My dad has an 88' IROC-Z, I've really grown to appreciate the 3rd gen camaros. I'm looking at getting a 90' myself sometime soon
Ever end up getting one?
Proud owner of an '89 IROC Z 5.7 TPI with 133,000+ miles. 3rd gen Camaros are the best. They might not be the fastest cars modernly, but their handling capability certainly stands up over time. There's something very refreshing about sitting in a car without screens and distractions.
1987 IROC Z28 was a break out year for the 5.7 corvette engine and the return of the convertible! I Grew up in the 80s and I bought a brand new 1987 IROC Z28 rite after graduating high school..just Awesome memories!! One of my favorite cars and they deserve more recognition the 3rd gens!
Good video on these Camaros!!
You have really boned up your knowledge of the Maro's! Specs just rolling of your tongue better then a salesman in the 80's! Very good info. and well videographed! Thanks!
I have loved these cars since I was a kid...
The hood intakes are not fake they open up at the top when you floor it forcing cold air into the carb or crossfire injection depending on what set up it has
They did that is correct but only on the cross fire injection models otherwise like this car they were fake so to speak.
My crossfire has real ones. You also can buy breathers for carburetor ran engines. They have a vent on top so you can get fresh air.
Had a 83 and I loved it when the flaps open up
I got this car new on November 2 1982 , I was 18 years old. Graduated in May and began work and college part time. My father financed it and had faith I could make the payments which I did for 4 years. Drive out price was 10, 500. Sticker was 12, 773.
The hatch with the carpet around the sides and that door that locks were all upgrades a locking trunk hatch door/premium quiet package which added the carpet and more sound deadening material in strategic places. I had the same seats/material, except mine was an 82 and it had silver velour which did match the silver body cladding on the bottom of the car below the stripes.
There was another choice with a sport seat called the contour seat but it was limited as production was low so only the drivers side came with it and the passenger side was just a normal seat covered the same. I had the power windows mirrors and hatch release, the power door locks. A rear wiper washer was an option, the switch would be located bottom left below the headlight switch to match the rear defroster switch on the opposite side. I had this same engine which I did not even know there was an upgrade at the time since my father picked the car out while I was at work.
The cross fire injection offered just a lill bit more HP as you know but anyway, I was happy with tthe car I had at 18 yrs old. It did not have t tops but it did have all the other options. I kept her 9 years and sold her w 54K miles on her. I had a beater car, a 67 VW Beetle.
Good times, I remember them well and wish I could go back in time.
Just picked up an 88 I love it
13:24 I owned my 83 Z28 in 88 it had 74k miles, it smoked too, like yours. I had to get my engine rebuilt, I got beat by GT mustangs all the time but I still loved that car!
You should have got them out of the hole, after that they'd catch up and usually win at the end. That's how it was for me until the 4th Gen's came out, I bought a 93 Z28 and suddenly I wasn't losing anymore.
Yes no reason chevy didnt add another 50 hp. To beat the mustang's.and grand nationals They handled with them. But mustang's were faster until the 4th gen
Looks like a dream house fenced off,
Love the car
Great show ! This is my favorite generation of Camaro and Firebirds back in the day especially when my TV show Knight Rider was on with Kitt Trans Am .
I call bs on being able to fit in the back. I remember as a 10 year old barely fitting back there
I am 6ft and have been in the back for short trips.
Damn Sasquatch 😂
Nice video. Reminder, the cross-fire cars (82-83) hood scoops were functional flaps on the factory fiberglass skinned hood.
Yes you and a few others have shared that with me! It didn't look possible that it could function but I'll take all of ya all's word for it!
If only factories could produce the good oldies such as these.
I had 3 third gens. I bought them in highschool. A beater z28 for $500, a berlinetta for $700 and I think an 82. I regret selling them to this day.
Dam
There's actually 7 radio presets if you push 2 buttons together. Left, center, right. I remember discovering this on my fiero lol
Just pulled my Father's Berlinetta out of my garage I had stored since 2004. My father bought it new around 1981 or 82. Towed it to my mechanic to get it the go over then taking it to my body shop for sand down dent repair and paint t job.
I’m about to get an ‘84 z28 with a 5.7. Can’t wait for it
Want one of these cars so bad, but I’m just worried about it being an unreliable rattle box
That's not true
bano rubio not questioning the reliability as much as the fact they’re rattle boxes but most of them are 30+ years old so. Just got big heavy ass doors and bad interior
@@DCT97 but parts are cheap and if you get new trim clips they don't rattle at all. I just did my 84 I've had for 17 years. Like anything you have to take care of it.
@@DeadSexyAdamCheney hi my grandparents have this car for a very long time sitting in the garage any tips on where to start to get it up and running cheap way? I’d like to restore it slowly
@@Lil_vara start with free things you can do which is going to be cleaning parts. Start with the fuel system drop the tank and get it cleaned out. Unhook the fuel lines and clear out old fuel. If the pump is locked up which it probably is you can get one pretty cheap. I got one for my sons 91 for 40 on ebay. Once you get the fuel system cleaned and new fuel filters put on add fresh gas and bottle of seafoam. Then check belts for cracks and replace any that are bad. Check that you have oil if you do add a bottle of marvel mystery oil before your first start. Next check the electrical system. Make sure you have a good battery and all your sensors and relays are connected. Then turn key to on position and listen for the fuel pump pre loading. If everything checks out add a squirt of starting fluid to get it running faster you want to rev it up and get that oil moving to get everything relubed. Keep your rpms up for a min then back it down and see if it will idle. If it does let it run till its warmed up then shut it off and change the oil. Then lube up you steering linkage and check the brakes tranny fluid, radiator and take it out for a small test drive like around the block and see how it does.
Thank you so much for this comprehensive review!!!
I love these cars. Hope to own one someday
Love my 88 Iroc
Have an 86 Sport Coupe 385 Stroker swap.... chillin in my garage
Such a beautiful car. It's only problem IMO is no t-tops.
No t tops, no leaks
@@vondoobie4203 Yeah, but if I got one of these it would be a sunny weekend drive car only, so it wouldn't see any rain.
The hard tops are more ridged if you put any torque down or road racing t tops are not good. Plus t tops are heavier. Iconic yes but not usually without it's drawbacks
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have TTops in my 1983 Z28 if they didn't leak and rust the floor pans to shit. TTops are very fun, but a lot of work. Plus a hardtop Z28 is much less common than a TTop Z28, which makes my car more valuable.
I do believe Iroc's were from 85 and on. Z28 only for 82-84
True but Z28's were still offered as an option. I am not for sure how long they ran the z28. It was top dog until the IROC came out. After that it became the number two model. No one really cared about the z28 after the IROC came out.
Z28 from 82-87 and then came back in 91-92. In 88-90 it was the base model or an iroc-z. Iroc was from 85-90. Some years z28 and iroc available some years just the iroc.
I had a 85 Z28 and a friend of mine had a 86 Z28. All IROC's are actually Z28's but not all Z28's are IROC's.
I'm 15 and I started working on my 89 RS Camaro recently and it's getting close to driveablr
Very nice one you have there I love that exhaust note I'm hoping to find an '82 in good condition with the 5.0l & 3 speed to use as a second daily driver !
thanks for the review . very informative
I had the same car in 1984 mine was a five speed with the Camaro seats HO . I had it for two years the cops would not leave me alone I had to sell the car I had eight points on my license I cried the day I sold it . The tickets were all bogus I got one ticket for not making a complete stop at the toll booth throwing my quarter in I got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign that I was parked at for three hours and then pulled up again and stopped. I got pulled over for tint in the rear window and yelled at even though it was perfectly legal . Two weeks after I got the car they pulled me over and told one of my rear tail lights was out he didn’t say anything he just came and scraped the inspection sticker off gave me a ticket I said I want to look at the light and see if it’s working he said no I got home all the lights worked and continued to work for the rest of the time I had the car . Anyway I’m 57 now and I am buying another one as we speak just like the one I had I figure the cops won’t think I’m A rich spoiled brat anymore. Which I was not I worked construction and paid for that car it was my pride and joy .
I graduated in May 1982, I am 56 now. I started work full time and college part time and by November I was doing so well at work I had my eye on the new Camaro, My father and I went to look at a used 82 Camaro a guy I worked with was selling. It was a stripper, button hubcaps and all. Seemed it just wasnt meant to be. All of the sudden one day my father comes into my work and asks if I can come outside a moment and I asked my boss and so I did and there sat the same as here a 1982 Red z28 with the silver velour all options but t tops and it was an automatic and not the cross fire. I did not even know there was cross fire at that time nor did my father. He had gone by the chevy dealer down the road and saw it on the show room floor. He talked to the guys and figured out it was almost just as cheat to buy new as used and the financing and all on loans back then sucked.
He asked me if I liked it and O_O I said YES DAD. Of course I loved it. I finished my work shift and drove home in my 1973 cutlass supreme. Went inside it was pouring rain. Dad said go look in the garage for a moment with me. I walked with him he flicked the lights on there sat that red z28.
Like you I was not spoiled to the point they bought it for me, they financed it for me and told me I had to make every payment which I did for 4 years never missing a one. 254.48 a month back then with like 12 % interest or something crazy haha.
I took care of that car so much I had her 9 years. She was MY PRIDE and JOY. My father would tell me when I was washing and waxing her that I was gonna wax all the paint off. I always took care of my things no matter what they were and you would have thought I had gotten a Porsche or Ferrari ( did not even care about those cars then ) I was lucky and always had a beater car. My mom gave me her hand me downs and I paid for the insurance and drove them to places the Z might be at risk or get banged up. I finally sold it 9 year later w 54K on her but she was a beauty. Sold he for nearly 7K. to a friend.
There were 3 of us in the area I lived in with red ones. One cross fire a girl had lol and the contour seat interior and another one like mine. I did not learn of the different engines til later and I did not care. I was 18 and driving one of the most desirable cars in the USA. THINGS are sure different now. Cars like that were super cool and were actually obtainable by a teenager with a little job. I am certain you made a lot more money in construction than I did in retail at a Sporting Goods store but I did not party and I had plenty of money aside from my car payment to do anything I liked. Life was good back then lol.
I remember the H.O High output engines with dual snorkels on them and that red and orange and black RECARO look a like CAMARO seating. It was cool, a bit loud but very cool in retrospect. I liked it but was happy with my Silver Velour Deluxe interior haha.
What got me was in 1985 when I got the new Camaro Dealer brochure with the YELLOW IROC on the cover. AHHHH. I WENT NUTS. I tried and tried to figure out how to get out of my z and into that IROC but I had another year or so to go and no cash for a down payment. I Just wanted my car to be paid off and free up that cash flow.
Anyway. Good times , sorry guys about the long comment, got carried away there lol.
Peace.
Just realized you were in oregon! That’s awesome, I’m from oregon as well, putting together a 90 iroc at the moment.
A super nice and very original car. I had an '84 Z28 in high school in the mid 90's. I loved it, just regret selling it. Is it for sale?
This was for sale but has long since sold
those intakes are actually not fake they open up electronically
Friend had a new 82 with 2.8 v6. Crazy ass slow. Looked good though.
that’s honestly the perfect condition camaro
I'm gonna say this,in 1967 the Chevy advertisement said this was the closest thing to a vett.well this cockpit is like a vett
Very cool car
Bitchin Camaro!!! 🔥🔥🔥
My crossfire has real intake flaps on the hood. They open when you punch it. Just saying. This is my exact car just mines nicer. 45k original miles with hood paint and stickers.
quick Q: do you smoke? there is a lighter on the right to the spedometer
How much is insurance? I am looking to buy one. Thanks!
Same here.
I have a 1983 one literally identical to this as a 5 speed. It costs me like 55 $ a month for insurance
Was wondering the same thing, thinking about getting one as a first car. Small block Chevy, great engine to learn on.
@@kodeiboyd885 is it registered as a classic ?
Hostile Aks no, just as a Regular vehicle
For any 80’s Camaro you need a T-Top!
Coupe is easier to take care of tho
They made 1.5 million camaros and 800k firebirds. for the third gen.
thank god isnt a cross fire
Why's that?
@@z28crossfire65 your name is too perfect
@@canonryanestes1134 thanks lol. Hopefully when I start building my car and putting the videos up, people will change their minds about these cars.
Song from the early part of the video?
FYI, not dual exhaust.
Not a fan of T Tops I own a 1989 Camaro RS and 1970 Pontiac Firebird thank God no one cut em up
Your parents have a nice house there.
Is that a bronco at 13:26
You gotta cool I with the word likewise
Tell me why I rather cop this car than a 2020 car
Because it's an 80s Camaro. What's not to love?
History my dear boy history
Thats a nice camaro, wish i get one, anyone can tell me the best swap for this car? No too expensive
I’m not too experienced in mechanics but from looking online and also owning this car and one day will do this the LS1 engine is the way to go it’s the one in corvettes
@@Lil_vara thanks
I might get one of these as my second car… they’re so cheap for no reason
I’ve never heard of a camaro with a 2.5 4 cylinder. You sure about that?
Yep, but they didn't sell very many!
@@DrivenCompanion I never saw one can’t find one on UA-cam either not 3rd gen anyway . I grew up with 3rd gen but learn something new every day I guess
Yes the Iron Duke was only produced till 1984 and also available on the Firebird. ua-cam.com/video/8djSa6Tf_eo/v-deo.html
I worked with a guy that had one. I remember being blown away bit was a 4 cylinder factory camaro but yes it happened,
that is not an emergency brake and i do not recomend using it as one
Why not?
@@Lil_vara idk but makes me think about tokyo drift
@@mcjong2205 haha right
Early models didn't come with the t-tops
Dominic Manalang yes they did. It was only available for automatics. All about weight reduction & speed. T Tops are slower than hard tops. Same thing as today. They did it with the 2014 Z28. Didn’t come with the nice touch screen, sunroof & light show. Same thing for no sunroof in the new ZL1 1LE. After the 82-84 camaros Z28 were a success in racing. They made the IROC Series in NASCAR & for good marketing. They allowed people to buy the IROC-Z. Which isn’t an honest Z28. Imo. Yes these cars later came in manual with T Tops with the IROC-Z but imo. 82-84 Camaros are the real Z28’s. btw. I own this identical car in the video. Mine is a 5 speed manual though & has jet black Interior
@@kodeiboyd885 that's your own opinion 85 z28s with the 5 speed were the real z28s that one has the painted hood vents
@@kodeiboyd885 that makes no since how can a hard top with added roof weight be faster than a Camaro with no roof weight totally disagree with u on that
Dominic Manalang the vents actually work pal lol & it’s about aerodynamics when it comes to the roof of the vehicle
@@kodeiboyd885 doesn't make it faster you can put any engine in a Camaro the roof of the car has nothing to do with speed
You don’t have to be so formal
The mustang will always beat the camaro hands down
Depends on the year bro. 74 stang will become stung vs a 74 Camaro all day.
I'd say 50-50 myself
The mustang is much smaller...
Mustangs have always been underpowered, the new 5.0 saved the mustang otherwise camaro would be on top
Mustang is trash ive owned one and ive had 2 -3rd gen camaros. Currently i have a 86 z28 with ttops manual.
