- THIS IS THE STORY OF THE 3RD GENERATION CHEVY CAMARO.
Muscle car Enthusiasts didn't have much to get excited about in the early 1980s.
Former performance kings were all but neutered V-8 shadows of their old selves, and tightening fuel economy standards made it seem the malaise was here to stay but then something changed.
A new attitude was spurred on by a new style of music called heavy metal glam rock which was formed in the underbelly of Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, and fronted by bands like Moetley Crew and Quiet Riot. This rising movement spurred young enthusiasts to seek out a car that matched the music and the attitude of the era. They found that the 1982 Chevrolet Camaro fit that bill.
This video starts with the 1982 Camaro and ends with the 1992 Camaro.

I bought a brand new red Z28 in 1984. I still remember driving it home from the dealership. Greatest feeling cruising down the highway listening to Van Halen. I miss those days and that car. She was beautiful……..

probably run better than OEM trim now, hope you upgraded the exhaust to accomdate the 350.
I purchased an '88 IROC (LB9, manual 5 speed, t-tops) and still drive it. Back in 2017 I added inner and outer subframe connectors and rebuilt engine. Still as fun to drive as when I first got it.
Me and my father grew very close doing back yard mechanics on two of these, love them, he's since passed away, I have his car almost completely restored minus paint, I gave the one he had given me to my son, sometimes I catch myself looking over at my son the way he did me while we wrench. I want a heritage package so dang bad haha

I have a 1992 red Camaro z28 ..I don’t know if it’s the heritage package but it has black stripes on red body paint with the spoiler high
my dad used to take me to elementary school in his 1985 camaro rs
I alwayZ lOved that body on this 3 gens Camaros..ever since I wanted one

I got the z28 5.7 tuned port injection !
Got the strongest one out of the 3rd gen !

I bought my 1989 iroc z28 in 1990. Red 305 tpi. I still have it today in 2022. Still looks great. No rust, dents, inside really good shape. I love driving that car. I took emission stuff off and put a little bigger cam and Hedman headers and 3:73 gear.
Bought my 1991 Z28 in August of 1990.
Only has 55,000 miles. Super clean

I have a 91' that my uncle purchased new back in the day. My dad bought it off him 5 years ago, and once my Dad passed I took over the car. It only has 35k miles on it but I plan on taking it on a road trip across the country to honor my dad after I finish my degree. These are amazing cars and I have so many memories with mine.
I remember a lady in our neighborhood, about mid 40s, owned a gold color '87 Camaro IROC-Z. She bought it new back then. We thought she was the coolest person on the block because she used to drop her daughter off at school in it. Those were the 80s for ya. That LT1 rumbling up the street was the automotive soundtrack of my childhood.

The 1991-1992 are my favorite 3rd gen Camaros. I had a 1985 Z/28 5.0, 1987 Trans Am 5.0 TPI, 1988 IROC-Z 5.7 TPI and a 1991 Z/28 5.7 TPI. My 1991 Z/28 left Mustangs in the dust.

PLEASE don't ls it. THE 305 sbc can make power, try using cams with 110 lca and a better set of heads. GM during this era had a tendency to restrict the exhaust systems on their cars.
I purchased my 1987 Iroc-Z 5.7L w/t-tops in 1996 from the orignal owner, still own it today 25 years later. :)
In my opinion the best looking generation and my favorite Camaro.

My cousin got a Red 85 Z28 in 86 when she turned 15 - we had such great memories in that car -
In the 80s and 90s we had a White 85 T/A and a Burgundy 86 T/A. I miss that old white 85 still to this day. Weak 305 TP engine but was beautiful and we loved it. T-Tops and all.
Ah, my favorite generation of Camaro.. you can't go wrong with this look
I've had lots of these over the years, however in the past 10 years I've stuck with just one. 1984 Camaro Z28 H.0. Not much has changed for me since these cars were new, I still listen to Judas Priest driving my Camaro with the T tops out of course, only difference now streaming instead of the Cassette.

My first car was a red 1984 Z/28 I loved that car and had lots of fun with it, I would probably still have it if an old lady hadn’t t-boned me. But I have had 3 more since then and currently have a red 1988 Trans Am GTA 😎
@@Chevyguy-1984 does it have t-tops? I know some have them while others don't. GTA's are sweet, I'd snag one if the right one comes along.
@@Chevyguy-1984 Thanks for the comment. My roommate back in the late 90s bought a used GTA. Never really liked that gen but the GTA always caught my eye. Hood and rims. Bad ass!

I have a 1990 1LE-IROC-Z on of 28 made and a 1992 1LE-B4C one of 250 made . The 90 has 6.3 mi. total, the other now has a supercharger on it.

My opinion… these Camaros are some of the best looking fbodys of all time.
I bought a 85 Z28 with the Tune Port Injection motor when the new models came out and I have had it since it was new. Still driving it around today; it's been a great car!
I had two, an 83 V6 which I bought in 86 as a broke young family man and after my ex wife graduated from nursing school in 89 bought, ( still as a broke young family man!) a stripped V8 RS with a 5 speed, the only options were a/c and oddly a power hatch button, it cost $12,600 ,lowest price V8 I could find, it was actually pretty quick for,what it was!, my favorite 3rd gen Camaro would have to be the 85 Iroc, priced one of those at a dealership when I was 20 in 85 stripped with no options it was about 15 grand, which to me at that time may as well have been a million dollars! Oh, shit, those were the days!😀😀😀

Had as well an 83 V6. Drove it and loved it as a 16 year old. As time went on bought a 92 RS with a V8. loved both those cars wish I could drive them both one more time
I had one of the F-41 editions back in the day. Back then they were the car to have. Even though they were uncomfortable AF. You sit with your knees up in the steering wheel. The passenger side was basically a lounge chair. T tops were just short of garbage. Even brand new car’s would leak water like a strainer. Everything that could rattle, would rattle. Everything that could squeak, would squeak. But you looked good rolling through town. Sometimes I miss the old thing.

I have a 1989, T Top, 305 TBi, 5 speed IROC Z. Copper Red with the black and red Stripe and Gray Interior. Sexiest damn car I have ever owned.

Funny thing is, It draws attention like no tomorrow, even when parked next to todays exotics.
Yes, Its slow for todays performance, but it has enough power to feel fast and it sure loves to swing its rear out.

In our early 20’s my good friend absolutely lusted after this version especially the one featured in Simon and Simon. Oddly he was and still is a diehard MOPAR fan and currently owns a Challenger.

Great video, wanted a 88 Iroc when I was 25,couldn't afford one bought a 88 350 TPI t- tops 6 years ago so much fun to drive! Don't see many of them anymore

I had a 1986 IROC-Z which I did an LB9 to L98 swap, swapped out the 700R4 for a BW T-5 manual, upgraded pads, metal brake lines, Koni shocks, Steve Spohn truss connectors and rear end links with polys. I really learned my hot rodding chops on this car. Had it for 26 years. I never imagined a car could corner better...Until I got my C6 Z06. Believe it or not, I felt a lot of the IROC's DNA in the Z06. Especially the airy interior and basic form factor. But, the IROC was a very under rated sports car that handily beat the 924 and could compete easily with the 944 Porches. Especially with the L98 and T-5.

still a 383 is now inside … makes more power on German Autobahn to make more highspeed

Some extra facts. In 1988 Chevrolet only offered the Camaro in two trims, base sport coupe and the IROC-Z. The early built 88 Camaro sport coupes recieved what some call the shorty wing, a spoiler on the back that mounted onto the rear decklid. Think of the high rise wings on the 91/92 Z28s, basically that but just much smaller. Six months into production they dropped that wing for the standard three piece wrap around spoiler. The 1988 model year was the first year the base sport coupe Camaro recieved ground effects to look like the IROC-Z. Also, the 1990-1992 recieved a few more cool changes worth noting like a new instrument panel and on 91/92 models the ground effects changed slightly with the addition of small aero ducts for what GM said at the time could improve brake cooling. Third generation Camaros are pretty cool cars! Thank you for the video!

I had a red 1987 Camaro that I bought used in January 1996 for $3200. It had a sunroof and a Yamaha stereo with cassette deck. It had the 2.8 liter multiport fuel injection V6 mated to a 5- speed manual. It had 80,000k on it but was well maintained by the previous owner and was in near mint condition. I was 20 years old at the time and although I got into a lot of trouble with it, it wasn't the car's fault. Besides, I satisfied just about every testosterone fueled desire I had as a young man with that car, wouldn't trade the memories for anything! I even wrenched on it myself from time to time, strengthening the bond between man and machine. When I finally wrecked the car in September 2000, I was in tears.
I love the 86. I owned 2 and I’m currently redoing 1 of them now. Iroc z all the way.

I used to own a '89 RS Camaro t-top edition. Despite having the 2.8 V6 it was a fun to drive car!
My sister had back in 1983, a red 1983 v8, I had a 1984 Sarajevo Olympic edition one and in 1991 had a Red RS with t-tops. It was my favorite car ever

I saw a brand new brown '82 Z/28 the week they came out and just loved it. Couldn't believe such a change took place in styling. It was a much needed redesign and they hit it out of the park. Made the fox Mustang look like shit in comparison. They still look great. Thanks for vid guys.

I was an airman in the Air Force in 1987 and I remember this one single Staff Sergeant who lived in the dorms. He didn't own a car, walked everywhere and saved every penny until one day he bought a brand new IROC-Z. He was out in the dorm parking lot everyday washing and waxing that car. He loved that car. Then one day about two weeks after he bought that car I saw him walking again. It seems someone stole his car.
The TV show Knight Rider is what made me fall in love with this generation. Any chance I got to go to the store, I would head straight to the toy aisle and go through matchbox and hot wheels vehicles looking for a Camaro/Trans AM.
I have an 86 Iroc. Also an 85 trans am, 87 formula and 92 firebird. Love the 3rd gens. Oh I also have a 79 Z28!

@@ThisOldCarChannel I'm currently in the process of doing a full restoration on it so it's in pieces. It ran fine at the time tore it down. However the 305 will be replaced with a 350....and I grenaded the original transmission back in 1997. I replaced it with a world class t5 back then. The original engine will be saved and wrapped up for safe keeping 👌 I plan on doing a few upgrades (fuel injection, exhaust,steering and suspension) to make it more street friendly.
I have owned 6 Camaros over the years. A 1974 LT, a couple of 1967's including an RS and 3 3rd gens. A brand new 1984 5.0 HO Z28, a brand new 1985 5.0 TPI IROC-Z and a 1987 5.7 TPI IROC-Z. The 2 IROC's handled like slot cars compared the the '84. Wasn't a whole lot of power but the throttle response when the right foot went down was pretty cool.
Best friend owned a 74 Type LT. Loved that car! I was more of a Trans AM guy. Owned the 78 formula and T/A. My brother owned a 1982 Camaro.

my 87 IROC at 4:33! the one car out of dozens i really regret getting rid of, it was my first NEW muscle car. went to many rock concerts in that old IROC back in the 80s, and it saw a lot of lake parties, good times for sure
I have an '88 sport coupe, purchased new by my mom who passed away a few years later. It's just a little 2.8, had a repaint in early 2000s but now really needs another paint job. These cars have reached the age where I get compliments when I take it out. You don't often see them on the road anymore.

I sold my '81 Z28 and bought a '89 IROC Z. I still own it and greatly enjoy it especially since it now carries a 500 hp 383.
Not long after meeting ( now my wife ) the bought an 83 z-28 , good car, fast car ! Kids come, it had to go ! Wish we still had it, Good car !
The video didn't mention that the #1 requirement for owning the F-Body was a mullet. I can't remember seeing any males driving the Camaro that didn't sport one. All kidding aside, the looks of this generation of Camaro have grown on me. I just don't see many of them still functional in my neck of the woods.

I'm actually very appreciative there was no mention of the mullet, I'm burned out from hearing it. Besides lots of people had them in the 80's, even people that didn't own a 3rd gen.
That was likely a thing 20 years ago when these cars could still be found on the road, but that association is no longer true today. A 3rd gen driver is far more likely to be bald as I am now, and I never had a mullet
Owned a 83 with the 305 4 barrel, Was a sharp car that handled corners well, but god that car was a slug, esp. with the automatic. Later when I bought a Mustang LX with the 5.0 and a Hurst 5 speed (along with headers and straight pipes) it felt worlds quicker, even if it was uglier.
Owned an 87 LX 5.0 Manual shift. That thing could move! My younger bro bought it brand new then could not afford it, then my twin had it, then I had it! My twin and I were both radio DJs and one was out of a gig then I was out of a gig. lol My younger bro ended back with the stang and traded it in.

Totally awesome I can remember growing up in was the town of Markham Ontario which is just north of Toronto, one of the guys I knew on my street had a mid 80's i-rock z car with ttops, never got a ride in it unfortunately but I always wanted to have one. great video
My twin bro (who does the voice for the videos) and myself are each looking for a 3ed Gen. He had an 82 I think. My girlfriend's brother bought a brand new IROC-Z. I got to drive it and can remember it being bad ass!
@@ThisOldCarChannel lucky you unfortunately I was born with a whole in my heart and I'm 49 years old now and a stroke and cardiac arrest survivor and use a cane for balance when I'm outside walking around and have a defibulator in my chest and can't drive anymore since early '06.

Just bought an 87 IROC Z28. Love it thus far, needs some work but still happy purchase for me.
At 58 years old my grandma got a 91 cherry red iroc and had it until she passed away...I wanted so bad to keep it in the family forever but my junkie cousin sold it 2 weeks after she passed....never forgave him for it...
I so wanted a '86 IROC when I was a kid in the 90s even though I didn't have a licence yet.
I used to own a '89 RS trim camaro. Even though it had the 2.8 V6 it was still a blast to drive. Miss it badly after all these years!
To have one now. A neighbor down the street bought an 1989 6 months ago. I thought he was going to do something with it but it's now covered and just sitting on his driveway. Thanks for watching Daniel.

Great video! Love learning about the history of my favorite car. Currently doing a mild restomod on my 84 Camaro Sport I call Project Plain Jane. Although a base model, it was well equipped with a host of cool options including the carb 305, power windows and hatch, tilt wheel, and best of all, factory T-tops. This is in fact the fifth third gen Camaro I've owned! Again, great video! Keep'em coming!

In my junior, senior years in highschool up into my late twenties I owned a mid night blue '64 mustang coupe I6 3spd AT on floor with staggered Center Lines brushed aluminum auto drags 15x8 fronts 15x10 rears & BFG radial T/As
225/60 fronts 255/60 rears it was slower than dog doo doo & everyone & the mailman in mail jeep wanted to race me at intersections. I lost pretty much EVERY race. Then I was lucky enough to own a '86 Saleen fastback mustang #191

Grand Nationals, GMC Syclones, GMC Typhoons, Pontiac T/A GTAs but I would often beat C4 Corvettes, 3rd Gen F body Camaros, Firebirds. It's a loosing
proposition against high revving turbos & awd god forbid if has both. I personally prefer 84'-85' Ford Mustang GT T-tops 5.0L H.O. 302 it's seems the carburetor version was so much better faster off the line than my EFI. Then came the Mitsubishi triplets Starions, Conquest, Lancer, Eclipse, twins 300GT, Dodge Stealths, Nissan 300zx, Toyota Supra Mark III IV import vs Domestic show down...good times good times !!!!
I had an '84 after a drunk driver totaled my '77. I loved it.
Never owned a Camaro nor a Firebird, but always felt that they were beautiful cars, especially the Firebird Trans Am! Those cars were more roomier in the front than I thought until I actually sat in a Camaro, I still never owned one. I like the look of the 3rd Gen Camaro! Still, now that I am 61, I probably will never have it. But if I were, an IROC-Z Camaro or a Firebird Firehawk would be a car that I would love 💕 to own!
After highschool I purchased a brand new dealer order 1987 IROC Z28 Camaro black T-bar roof with red interior. That was my first new car in the 80s and it was a 5.0 auto..I'm not sure but the 5.7 option didn't offer T-bars or I would have got it. Lot's of memories with that car and it handled and the looks of that car still gets my attention. In my generation that was one of the cars to own loved the Trans Am GTA a lot and was a hard decision at time of purchase. I sold that IROC but later on bought one that was a 1987 IROC 5spd a lot more fun but due to rust issues sold it. These cars were driven hard and if you live in the northern parts rust just killed them making it harder to find a good one..yes the prices have gone up but I may look a a convertible next time!

Ever since I sold my 1989 in 2004 I kept questioning myself as to "why"? However it was either fall three months in arrears with the house mortgage company or liquidate.

Things happen for a reason. I traded in my 1978 Trans Am for a 1978 Honda Accord back in 1984. I had just gotten a job as a Radio DJ part time and could not afford the gas. I have a '87 sport coupe that I put in a modified L98 from a '91 trans Am. Was my fist car and I still have it 20 years later. I am also about to take possession of a 1 owner '84 Z28 in a few days.
That was my first car! A 1984 Berlinetta-with a hatch roof! Man, that girl was thing was fast.

I just bought my own camaro rs ‘92 with t top and 5.0L. As a heavy metal enthusiast, I think that was the best option for me. I love it. I need to do a few things here and there but it’s amazing for 93k miles
An older coworker of mine offered me his white 1992 Camaro in manual for a very reasonable price. Although he has repainted the car and has gotten rid of the stripes. I'm going to check it out this week.
The heavy metal glam rock scene on the Sunset strip needed a car to spur that attitude.... and just where was that car built? Down the street in the valley in Van Nuys, so fitting! My favorite is the '84 H.O. Z28. They made so many of them, 52,457 to be exact. Finding one in decent condition isn't that hard, but prices are going up. Great history lesson on these cars!

My favorite too, at first I was looking for an IROC but I came across an 84 H.O. I rarely see clean examples anymore, I've had mine for almost 10 years. Honestly, it was ok when I got it but that's about it. It's much better nowadays mainly because I've pretty much went over everything, even two and three times on some stuff.

We had a year old '85 with the 2.8 V6.
Not the fastest thing around but fun to drive and reliable. Always wanted to put a HyperTech chip in it.
Member of extended family did this with an S10 with same engine and loved the results....better power and not as much downshifting. Did put a set of 60 profile tires on it. Great handling.
'91, our second child was born and it was decided (wink wink) we needed a 4 door. I hated to see it go.
man, i remember stopping by the lot where the deal was done to drop off some papers and there it was, kleen, white with the doors open and the stereo blasting (5 band EQ/amp and 6x9 speakers added). ahhhh. Hope it went to a good home.
It's almost funny. For as long as this body style ran, they're rarely seen now.

Another awesome video! I remember the 3rd generation Chevy Camaro and its twin, the Firebird. I was too young to drive by the 3rd generation was intro'd to the public. But I remember finding it way more attractive than the final 2nd gen. Camaro.

My brother owned 15+ Camaros of the 3rd generation. The one that stood out the most was his 1988 Iroc Z convertible. That thing was mean. 350 TPI. Basically a Corvette in disguise. It was also one of the rarest Camaros ever made and it had the styling of an exotic. I watch the speedometer go pass 140 MPH many times in that car.
My grandfather was a bar owner and part time boxing promoter and manager, he wore gold chains, fixed everything with money, and ordered a 1984 camaro berlinetta just like the one pictured at 2:43 except his had t tops and a 5 spd. He let me start taking that car when i was 14 years old and i learned to drive on it. it only had a 305 but it was light and quick, and just as tacky as he was. lol

Its gonna cost me about 10k to get her to where she deserves to be. I've got an essentially no rust 88 Iroc, 305 5 speed with disc brakes all around and 3.45 gears. Only 45,000 miles. Shes a blast to drive.
Gonna go with the 2019 Riverside Blue and slap on a silver iroc decal on the bottom. Pretty excited!
I would say one of my favorite cars I've ever owned was a 1982 Z-28. I don't remember what it had from the factory because I never looked up any of the codes for it, and also because I bought it as a rolling chassis, but by the time I got done with it, it had a 4-bolt 350 from a '74 C-10 that I did all the fun shit to and built into a 383, a TH-350 out of a '77 Caprice or Impala that I sent out for rebuilding and a B&M kit, and a disc brake rear end with 3:73 gears. I had a LOT of fun with that thing, but it had a chronic overheating problem, regardless of what I did to it, including a 4-core radiator, 160° thermostat, a clutch type fan, then a flex fan, a puller electric fan, a pusher electric fan, all engine accessories swapped from regular V- belts to serpentine pulleys with one belt, and even fabricating some custom duct work to suck more air in and direct it where I wanted it, which was basically every available point on the radiator. I just never could keep it cooled down. But still... a really fun car anyway.

It's either one OR the other hence OEM designed. Exhaust manifolds too small ? Running too rich ? Wrong heat range spark plugs ? Wrong spark gap ?
Wrong firing order ? A few reasons why Nascar & GM LS went to reverse flow

Since I only had a RS he didn't know I had a V8 305. He thought I had a 6cy also, when I took off on 59N in Houston TX. he became a believer in my RS.
In 2018 found a 1988 Camaro Iroc-Z T-top 305tbi 5-speed...car was junk, missing alot of parts, the motor and trans were there but like Frankenstein "It's Alive" was made from donor cars, even has a trans am horn button, a 140mph speedo, found some RS rims painted the inserts black, car was originally orange but was stolen and painted black, interior is black, Vin on the dash is a stolen tag, just the factory GM stickers on the passenger inner fender well and rear trunk quarter panel identified the car. All other tags were stripped, the RPO code in the center console aswell as the door jam...but it runs great cold ac, cruise control works, all power including seats...
I recently bought a 1991 camaro RS. Finding some parts for it is a pain in the you know what.
I feel you, I got a 91 firebird with a 88 camaro iroc rear end. Why? Disc brakes all the way around and the 277 rear gears. Finding Axles for it is... stressing.

@@michaeljohnson1443 No, if it's a Disc Brake set up it's probably a Borg Warner 9 Bolt which is not a C clip style set up. It's like a Ford 9 inch but harder to find axles for.
The Blue Iroc pictured @7:08 is not from the actual IROC racing series. it's a 1LE spec car made for the GM Motorsport/Players Challenge series in Canada. The cars were made in ultra low #s from 86 to 92'. Along with G92 & 1LE RPOs, they had their own RPO code A4U from 86-90 & R7U for 91'/92. Many well known racers started their careers in those cars such as Ron Fellows, Ken Wilden and others. I know this stuff because I've owned one of them since 93'. It's a Red 91' looks just like the last one that came off the Van Nuys line.
Also G92 did NOT get you the 1LE package automatically. (Just sayin) My paperwork from GM Vintage says for 91' model year (maybe previous years were different) there was 1570 Z28s imported to Canada from Van Nuys. 403 of those were G92s. Only 134 of those 403 G92s were 1LEs. 97 of those 134 1LEs were R7Us. (no R7Us officially stayed stateside). The R7U cars had swinging fuel pickups, aluminum drive shafts, TKO 5 speeds with a lower O/D gear than the regular T5, RPO N10 Dual exhaust with cutouts and sidepipes that dumped in front of rear wheels(Team ordered/installed). Also the motors (TPI 305 LB9) came sealed from the factory (Flint) to keep the teams from tinkering with them as it was a driver spec series.

You had to order A/C delete (RPO C41) & RPO G92 to trigger the 1LE package.
I'm quite surprised that the 1982 Z-28 Pace Car edition didn't get mention at the beginning. The Silver with blue rockers looks just like it, sans decals.
