- Sometimes Pen blanks are very transparent. To avoid seeing the brass tube thru the blank one must paint the pen tube and sometimes the pen blank. I this video I show how I paint pen tubes and pen blanks.

This was great. I haven't done an acrylic for years, I always do wood and back when I did I was so new that I didn't really know how to do much right.
Thank you for sharing!👍🏼
Great pen and great tips, thumbs up Lynn.
Thank you very much sire, it is appreciated
Nice one Lynn, thanks for that video. 👍👍
+Eric Milligan you are welcome, thanks for watching
Excellent tip, will put it to use in my shop.
Thanks Michael I appreciate your continued support.
Thank you very much. I’ve never had to paint one yet and was wondering at the best way. I’m wondering if you’d have painted it say neon pink if that would have changed the look of the blank? I might paint a few tubes just to insert and see. Always great to go thru your stuff. Thanks again.
Great advise on painting for transparent blanks.Regards,Bob
+RJBWoodTurner Thanks Bob
Great video. I just started turning pens and I did an acrylic that had some gold in it so it didn't look too bad. I have a bunch of different color thick sharpies. I know I wont be able to get inside the blank, but can I use them on the tubes? Thanks.
Great tip about the Krylon, I was wondering what type of paint should be used. Up until now I was using regular spray paint. I have been concerned about the bond between paint and glue. I have never had one come apart, but in the back of my feeble mind.
+Dave White Thanks Dave, Krylon may not be the best but that is what I am currently using. I think what is more important is that whatever paint is used, it be allowed to fully cure. We often try to hurry things along and end up with less than desirable results. Thanks for the support.
Good stuff
+Kaged Creations Thank you, hope it was helpful
Sir what do you use when your tube is larger then the 7mm for sanding and squaring off the ends of the blank
Can you tell me where you picked up that sweet little center finder?
He Carla - I think I got that at Woodcraft, it comes in very handy. Thanks for watching.
Like that kit Lynn. I think I asked you before, is your toolrest stock or not, i like the finish and size of it. Have a great weekend and a great visit with you know who....lol
Hey Robert, my tool rest are stainless. I have one 3" long and one 6" long. Got them from some member of IAP, several years ago. I did see something similar to them on Penn State's site I believe. Thanks and you have a good weekend as well.
I wonder if there would ever be a bonding issue because of the paint between the tube and the blank. Epoxy or CA glue do not bond well painted surfaces. Just thinking out loud. I know there is a black colored epoxy, I've also used JB weld because of the gray coloring.
+Tarry Frey Hey Tarry, there us always that possibility I guess. Can't say I've ever had a breakdown but there was s that chance. Perhaps I should rethink painting the inside. Perhaps white powder coating the tube would be the safest ? Thanks for watching and the comment
What are you spraying on your drill bit when you’re drilling the acrylic blank
Randy D looks like water
Dont care for that blank but good video.
NEVER paint the Tube, You will still see it once the blank is turned. It does show through. You Should always paint the Inside of the Blank! Not The Tube! Second. Never paint the Inside of the Blank and Paint the Tube also. You can't Glue Paint to Paint. it will fail. Third Testors Model car enamel works best, use a Q Tip to apply inside the blank Only. Why Testors ,it's Made for Plastics. Sorry to bust your Video. I cast blanks, and have used many methods to hide the tube. after 7 years of doing this. This method has proven itself.
Thanks Carl - I agree that you shouldn't paint both and painting the inside of the blank is probably the best alternative. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Hi Lynn. Are you aware of any potential issues with casting blanks (using the Diamond Clear epoxy kit) with Rustoleum painted tubes? I am going to try casting myself, and I found a very specific color that I would like to use under carbon fiber - and perhaps as a top layer on the tubes. Any reason epoxy would damage the paint coating on the tubes? Thanks! Ellen
Hey Ellen; you raise a controversial topic. I have found that epoxy does sometimes damage the painted tube. Next week I'm doing a video on this very topic. I'll use clear Alumilite blanks so any effect can be seen. There are many factors to consider, your casting material, your coloring agent, how transparent or opaque is your blank etc. Not sure I helped but I have cast many times and majority of the time with no issues but problems do occasionally show up. I hope to answer some of these questions with my tests. Thanks for reaching out and keep me informed how your casting goes and any problems you have. email LL_Woodweorks@yahoo.com
