  • There are times when penturners encounter transparent blanks. When this happens, what do you do?? Do you paint the tube or the blank? In this video we compare painting the tube , or the blank or both while gluing tubes in with CA and 2 part epoxy.

I always paint the blank. If I paint the tube only, sometimes you can see the glue through the blank. However I paint the tube if I am going to then cast it in cleat resin.

The discoloration is simply dried glue (of both types) against the clear acrylic. A definite sign that you should paint at least the blank if not the blank and tube. The downside to blank and tube is the paint gets thick and causes a real tight fit, so if you have a loose tube maybe that is the route to take. A tight fit just do the blank only. Interesting experiment. Thank you, sir. EDIT: lol, like Bob, when I REMEMBER I have been painting both. Think I may just drop down to blank only after seeing this. PS, I use a Q-Tip to swab the paint inside the blank. It is a lot neater and just throw the Q-Tip away rather than clean a brush. Especially easy when doing multiple blanks and colors at once.

Thanks and you are correct, when painting both the fit is tighter. Thanks for the input and for watching.

You cannot glue Pain to Paint, it just doesn't work, Painting the tube, You will still see the glued, Painted tube. Paint the inside of the blank, You will Not see the tube.

2 thumbs up Lynn. Truthfully I have stayed away from clear blanks because of the uncertainty of adherence of brass and plastic.

Great video, Lynn. I think you stumbled upon the best way to go. Personally, I use epoxy for my tubes and when painting, I paint the insides of the blanks. When gluing the tubes in, I mix two or three drops of the same color paint with the epoxy. Not the same as painting the tube. Works a treat for me.

Thanks John and tinting the epoxy is a great idea. Doe that affect the adhesion in any way? That's what so great about our craft, there are so many ways to generate the same great results. Best Regards and thanks for watching.

Lynn, the haze, or discoloration as you call it, is actually just the surface of the hole as left by the drill bit. Where you see color without the haze is where the glue (either type) forms a bridge connecting the tube and blank. This indicates how little glue actually serves to bind the tube to the blank. You also see more of this connection with epoxy than CA. This is why I only use epoxy and actually apply glue to the inside of the blank before inserting the tube. This gives me a better coverage and I have yet to have a glued tube failure in over 12 years.
That said, you certainly succeeded in proving the point that either the tube or inside of the blank (or both is so desired) should be painted when using translucent synthetic blanks. Good video!

Very informative presentation. The "discoloration" is where the glue did not spread evenly inside the blank.I have found that any blank that is anywhere near transparent, you should paint the blank. In addition, epoxy usually looks a bit yellow, which is quite noticeable. Thanks for the video.

Lynn, Interesting results and I would like to propose another test, something that I have found makes a difference when painting the tube only: when applying the epoxy or CA glue, coat the inside of the blank as well as the tube. I've found that it's makes for better adhesion, especially when turning thin walled pens, and it will lessen the 'voids' that we saw in your test blank, that is, when the glue does not completely and evenly cover between the tube and the blank. My reason for wanting to paint the tube only is twofold: 1) making sure the inside of the blank is evenly and completely painted is not easy to do, for at least me, when the blank is opaque, 2) most opaque blanks will not show the slight variations that you'll get with some 'voids' between the tube and the blank where the glue has not evenly coated between them... as long as the blank has glue applied to it as well as the tube and the voids are minimized. Would be interested to know your thoughts and see the results of any further testing you may do. Thanks for your videos as I always am challenged to try new things and improve!

Hi Craig, coating the inside of the blank with epoxy and CA is something I also do with segmented blanks, especially when using mixed materials such as alumilite / wood / aluminum. I picked that tip up from Zac at NV Woodwerks. You may have a good point in making it a practice to coat the inside of the blank on all segmented blanks and blanks that need painting. Thanks for the thought and I appreciate your support.

Great experiment Lynn. I’ve reached the same conclusion and only paint the inside of the blank. I’ve used Testors enamel paint, Krylon spray paint, and Tamiya acrylic spray paint for models. I prefer spray painting and like Tamiya acrylic the best as it leaves a nice smooth coat. It’s also fun to try different colors, the same blank can look completely different if backpainted black, white, or any color that sompliments the blank.

I agree with one fella that said it was the drill bit marks on the hole tha caused the frosting. I also heard of people using finger nail polish as a paint specially the fast drying kind. This would be a good test.
