    *Hey group. Out of all of the gear shown today... what are the TOP 3 Items you would take with you into the Wild for Camping / Survival?*

    • @kimonk
      @kimonk 5 років тому +4

      DropForgedSurvival The blue water filter w/container, the necklace fire tool, the Funky blade that looks like you could use as a weapon too.. (sorry I’m bad with remembering the actual names of things. (The mora knife comes in a close second to the funky blade tool.) You could survive with these three items.

      DropForgedSurvival i liked the silky-boy saw the crkt neck knife and the 8 inch fire steel/ferro rod!

    • @redneckgimpreview
      @redneckgimpreview 5 років тому +3

      Chris, for me, I like and want the fire plugs, the Fire Strip rolls and the survival 3 filter water filter. I already have a Bahco Laplander I bought quite a few years ago when I was still bow hunting for $10 and it is still in great shape! I don't have a need to use it very often but it's been a solid performing saw every time I need it. So yeah, I have a few "wants" but I have most of what I really need. Good video! Weather is getting better here although they're calling for snow through tomorrow so I am obsessed with fire! LOL I love Montana!!!

      Out of that Show Case, I'd take the Renovo Water Straw, the 8 inch Ferro Rod, and the Pocket Boy. The back edge of the Pocket Boy would be the Scraper for the Rod, the Saw would be used to make a Bush Shelter, and my Camp would be as close to my Water Source as I could get. But I have a lot more Trees and Water up here in the Great Lakes than you have in South Texas.

    I have one of those minimalists, I used it for nearly 2 years opening cases of ammo to sell in the gun shop I was working at, it held up great. If you need a small knife for work those are awesome. I really need to pick up one of those pocketboys. Nice and tiny and does a great job from what I have seen.

      @@DropForgedSurvival Actually, got that one from Chris Tanner a couple of years ago. I think he keeps an Extinguisher and a Trauma Kit in the Driver's Door Pockets. Which reminds me to add a Headlamp and one of those Car Rescue Hammers to that door gear. But I'm driving a Minivan, so I've got the room. Hope this helps.

    As for me , through many years of experience , I ditched all those gear and gadget bags and use quality plastic bags. It beats wet gear plus it cuts down on your weight and gives you extra water containers , dry is light , wet is heavy. I live in an area that is low woodlands , swamp and marsh , I carry an inflatable/co2 life vest and a very small air mattress as we are subject to flash flooding . I also carry some items to distill water as we have fresh, brackish and salt water . Oh , don't use those zip bags with the plastic zipper tabs . enjoyed the video

    Somewhere, somehow, the survival community went completely off the rails when it comes to knife tangs. So lets put something in perspective here: By modern usage, do you know what else isn't full tang? Excalibur. If there was a King Arthur, and if he had this epic sword, it wasn't full tang per the definition currently used; nor are swords of the samurai; nor are pretty much any sword, except maybe small swords and fencing foils. The tangs on all of these get smaller to fit into sometimes-substantial handles.
    Are the modern-style full-tang knives stronger? Probably, but I've batoned with a CRKT M-16 folding knife and got the job done without any damage to me or the knife. When I hear about somebody breaking a Mora, it reminds me of Dutch Bushcraft Knives trying to figure out how much abuse it takes to do the same damage to a knife edge as Survivor Lilly did with allegedly-regular use. They wound up having to hammer their knife through a frying pan. I managed to keep my CRKT intact by not being a bonehead about it.
    If you can't afford to spend much on a knife, don't feel bad about not having a full tang knife. Yes, Mora knives are mostly either truncated or rat-tail tangs -- which means what, exactly? It means you shouldn't be a bonehead when using one. You know, it's kinda like how you don't do woodworking by swallowing a fistful of speed, and then chasing it with brute-force application of a three-pound hammer to the butt of the chisel. There is a middle ground between twiddling your thumbs and whacking the spine of a knife blade with a log.

    • @frenstcht
      @frenstcht 5 років тому +1

      @@DropForgedSurvival I should mention that I wasn't accusing you of being a bonehead...just for clarity. Especially because your job here includes reviews, you need to be rough with your gear :-)

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 5 років тому

      Definitely agree, although the langmesser was a sword type with what would be considered full tang by modern standards, so there were historical full tang swords even if they were just a way to avoid problems with the guilds.

    One problem with the "FirKit " on everything... it you tell someone to get my fire kit they are going to bring you survival kit... put a patch below it saying what type of kit it is... other than the real fire kit

    Personally, I prefer aluminum over titanium. Far lighter and is more conductive.

      @@cemrenurkaraca5641 Only acute in if you heat it up to extreme temperatures, it can form gasses and it is not conditions you can recreate in your home or in the wild. Aluminum is however slightly prone to corrosion, so you don't want to cook Spinach or Rhubarb, or a tomato sauce in Alu pot, because you would get a intake of it, and over time ruin your gear.

      My Grandpa gave me my very first knife for my 10th birthday
      and it was a small pocket Swiss Army knife.
      I’m now 56 and and I still carry one to this day.
      I’m sorry to say that the one my Grandpa gave me so many years
      ago went by the wayside several years ago, I’m now on my 4th one...
      Not bad, one every 14 yrs...!
      I would be lost without mine as I use it in some fashion each and every
      day...
      In fact, I just used mine a few hours ago.
      I have a lighted magnifying glass that I needed to use to read some very
      tiny instructional print pertaining to a new pair of Bluetooth ear buds I just
      got.
      When I went to turn on the light I realized that my battery was dead.
      The battery compartment cover is held on by a single small screw.
      Instead of digging out my tool box and then searching around until I found
      the right size I just reached into my pants pocket, pulled out my Swiss Army
      Knife, accessed the small screwdriver on it and in less than a couple of seconds
      I’d made short work of swapping out the old battery for a new one and was soon
      able to get my Ear Buds up and working...!
      I wouldn’t leave home without it...!
      I hope that this helps.
