    An opinion to your question @ 23:22. Age has to do a lot with social pressure.
    In Korea, people generally assume that one should be at a certain stage in life by each age group (10s should be studying, 20s should be in college, 30s should be married, etc.)
    While this life agenda is not uncommon in other nations, the problem is that many Koreans harshly judge on anyone that does not live along this road.
    This age-agenda culture also affects the way many Koreans view Donghun and Jian's relationship as "this age gap should not be romantic".
    This is because in most Koreans' minds, the two are in very different stages of life.
    Junghee's case is honestly set a bit extreme for ordinary people since she is obsessed with the same man for about 20 years.
    But if you sense any "age" issues lingering around her struggles and actually many points in this drama, that is probably why you are seeing that.
    Not too say that age-centric society is simply bad, since the drama also notes some of its good parts.
    Older adults being more mature and embracing younger generation, younger adult like Jian showing respect to older adult like DH as the story progresses, etc.
    (In episode 7, you will see that Jian does not start eating the steamed beef before Donghun takes the first bite.
    This is a common sign of respecting the elder, which Jian did not practice in the the eariler dinners with him like in episode 2.)

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah that's an interesting detail I noticed too but also notice in other dramas....the eating etiquette and it's hierarchy ...it feels like a stronger theme in Korea than in Europe the age differences....but that may also be influenced by me and who I am surrounded by...social pressure itself seems a stronger factor...thanks for explaining..👍😁

    • @ank6043
      @ank6043 3 роки тому

      I think there is another point besides the age-based eating hierarchy at the scene you've mentioned. Yes, Jian did not start eating before he took his first bite.
      Jian always was the more transparent and expectant side in this relationship. Under the lack of any skinship, eating together was a blessing for her. They shared these special moments even they could not hug or kiss.
      Jian knows eating moments are so precious. After Donghun starts to eat, she feels that he also likes her, and her love is not one-sided. So, she starts eating after she feels relaxed.

    Thank you for these wonderful reactions, and for bringing together a group of people who similarly appreciate this drama. For the IU fans here, there is a great IU TV episode filmed just after this series wrapped up, and she talks at length about the Dear Moon lyrics (she wrote), and many other thoughts about the drama. One thing I found so touching was how strongly she connected with the JH character - and spoke about trying to love without reserve (no room for hate). For those of you who aren’t already huge IU fans - do yourself a favor and learn more about her and her story. When you realize she was raised by her grandmother in poverty when young - living for a time in a single room with limited food, you then also recognize why her anxiety spiked early in the filming of this drama, leading to her hospitalization. Her performance is truly remarkable. Everything about her is pretty remarkable.

    when she said that if i ever get to be born again i want to be born in this neighborhood as if her real home that Park Dong-hoon thinks she failed to find was there.

  • @Nowhere-Now_Here
    @Nowhere-Now_Here 3 роки тому +14

    Dong-hoon's line at 09:30 is, 'This isn't home, but she keeps mistaking it for home.' It's the nuance of being in the wrong place and wandering around without knowing how to get back home.
    In another scene, Dong-hoon and Jung-hee have a similar conversation while drinking. "Why is life so cheap/mean?" "It's cheap/mean because We don't love each other". I don't know how the English subtitles were translated, but the verb 'chisahada' is difficult to translate here. Usually, the dictionary says "cheap," but it has many implications, and it also means "narrow-minded", "stingy" and "ashamed." That is, it is usually used to blame others. Like, 'He's so cheap/mean'. It gives a strange nuance because it is used here about life, not people. Anyway, Jeong-hee's answer to Dong-hoon's comment is that life is miserable because everybody is stingy with love. It matches the lyrics of 'One Million Roses'. IU thinks this is a perfect answer to Dong-hoon's question, and she put the lyrics "Would you like to bloom one million roses with me?" in the song "Blueming" released after filming this drama.
    I think this drama has a strong Buddhist color(Dong-hoon is more of a Confucian figure than a Buddhist though). Buddhists aim to stop the pain of being born, old, sick and dying. When I see terms that are used symbolically throughout the drama, such as reincarnation or not being reborn, I naturally think of them.
    The funny thing is, Like Ki-hoon said, 'I won't go to the star. It's super boring,' the eldest brother says similar things in the scene where the three brothers drink in a cart bar. When Dong-hoon said, "Let's stop being born again," Sang-hoon said, "It's too bad to stop being born again. What do you do if you're not born? 'It's boring. It's fun to live. I just don't have money though.' Contrary to what Dong-hoon and Ji-an think they don't want to be reborn, they both affirm their current lives. It won't be painful if they're not born again, but there won't be a good time to spend with friends at Jeong-hee's bar. If you don't born and do nothing, you'll be bored and lonely. Everyone has own problems and pain, but they sympathize with each other and comfort each other.
    Jian, who even hated spring, said later, "It's okay to be born again. I can be reborn. It's ok', and 'If I were born again, I'd like to be born in this town.' This world can be hell, or a star-land. In Christian terms, 'the kingdom of God is within us.' If you feel like this isn't your home, do love. Then this place will turn into your home, into your star-land.
    My English sentences can be a little awkward because I used a translator. Please excuse me.

    The song One Million Roses may have possibly played a large role in inspiring this drama's story...
    Take a look at the full lyrics. What you see in subtitles is only the chorus lyrics as people sing them. There is a My Mister OST youtube video of this song which includes the English translation of this song. Also a slightly different English translation can be found on the givemeslippers fan website.
    The verse lyrics seem to speak of this story of PDH and Jian. There are 3 verses which talk of someone being born on earth with the mission of loving a true love which will lead to the growth of One Million Roses. That person finally after problems and sadness meets the love that was sent to meet them suddenly as if it rained. As they continue to love unconditionally one million roses bloom and that is what allows them to return to their star.
    These lyrics are much more about PDH and Jian then JH and the monk it seems to me. Notice also that the last scene with this song in this episode ends with PDH walking home and faintly singing the chorus and then breaking down. Up to that point in his life he has not had a love like that and so no way home to the star.
    I think in the bar when talks to JH about the 30,000 year old girl he is also talking about himself continuing to be born on earth. He has thought about this alot. See hints in the middle and latter episode 4.
    After a team meal he talks about how he is like building built over a river bed the year he was born and how it was built in the wrong place because it won't be able to be reconstructed later when it's developed more structural issues. It will have to be torn down. He says he he is like this as he picked the wrong place (earth) to be born and would prefer to not be reborn anywhere.
    Also, later in episode 4 his wife is talking to the CEO in their apartment they meet at and talks about how he is lonely and makes others lonely. About how she could never make him happy. About how he seemed like someone who lost something but was confused about what that was and how he seemed to feel this world was not where he belonged.
    This drama is amazing.

    ///Without a hateful heart/// ///Only when I give love without holding back/// I’ll be able to go back To my beautiful star that I long for..
    To me, those lines contain, in a certain way, the concept of sacrificial love, which is the most sublime kind of love. To be willing to give yourself for another, self-effacingly, “just because I want your wellbeing.” Kind of hinting to the core theme of this drama.
    This is the most meaningful drama I’ve ever watched and I’m so glad you have started this conversation. Please, keep them coming, boss!

      Yeah, the lyrics of this song is so meaningful in this context. PDH asks ‘why does she keep getting reborn if this is not her home? How can she go back to her home/ her star? ‘ she replies with the lyrics from this song - ‘without a hateful heart, if you can love without holding back, you can go back to your star’ .
      LJA starts loving him without holding back 💕

Plus, I think I speak for most of us following this series that we would happy if you covered everything... That said, I would love to hear your take on the pivotal sequences when PDH visits Ji An's guardian leading up to his confrontation with Lee Kwang Il. Ji An is feeling a bit rejected by PDH during the episode which makes the final sequence all the more powerful.

    (Sorry for my poor English and hope I had expressed my opinion clearly.)
    In ep 9, I love the scene, LJA and PDH took the subway back to home, LJA was confused about what DJY just said, a man having meals and drinking with a woman may not represent that the man like the woman but PDH do.
    Caught in her confusion, LJA forgotten getting off the subway. Standing out of the subway car, PDH stared at her and looked like stunned. PDH walked out of the station and hesitated a while, then got in the supermarket nearby. Apparently, PDH was waiting for LJA back to HUGYE station instead of buying fruits for mom.
    Director gave us so many hints about PDH concerned at LJA more and more, even though he tried to cover up his attempt secretly.

    What beats me most in this episode is the mentioned part of this Korean song's lyrics by the owner of the bar. Although I am not sure as you about reencarnation , what it's said in the song makes sense for me, in a way that you cannot "go home" (metaphorically been peaceful) if you have anger and not pure love in your heart. Which is the case of Dong hoon and Ji-An

      Many people have ask for similar shows but My Mister is one of a kind. For me My Mister and Breaking Bad are the two best dramas in this world and nothing ever came close. If you're looking for a show that is as good as My Mister in term of production, go for Breaking bad or Daredevil, Vikings S1-3, these shows have cold western feels. If you want to watch warm shows like My Mister, I recommend Fated to love you (2014), Mother (2018) or Dear My Friends (2017), Empress Ki (2013) which are some of my top favorite shows in 10 recent years

    I really appreciate this thoughtful analysis of Hwaiting\Paiting: ‘Fighting’ (not sure of the pronunciation). Ji An says this to PDH after their walk together and we get the wonderful loop of dialogue at the end of the episode, when she hears PDH say it to himself. Writer Park Hae Young does such a beautiful job of weaving these themes together in time throughout the series. I agree that this is when Ji an really starts to fall for PDH. She’s seeing how the fruits of her actions really impact the people around her for good or for ill and how one little word of encouragement or caring on her part can mean all the difference to someone. Which leads us to a lovely theme in MM, as Stephan pointed out - community. The friendships that offer a refuge, to the harsh and uncaring outside world. Slight Spoiler: The community that meets at Jung Hee’s bar (a kind of Sangha in Buddhism) unconditionally embraces Ji An and gives her a refuge later in the series. Her line that if she is reborn she wants to be reborn in PDH’s neighborhood breaks my heart.
    I’m also glad Stephan discussed Jung Hee the owner of the bar played so masterfully by
    actress Oh Na Ra. Her character mirrors Ji An in that they both have a past they wish to break away from. Her lines “I’m a clean woman” and others hint at something traumatic or that she is ashamed of, perhaps when she was in Thailand. I’d love to hear what others think this might be. Ji An and Jung Hee compliment each other beautifully at the end of the series.

The actress IU got into the habit of applying chemical heating patches to her body to stay warm, up to forty patches applied she said. She'd sometime get 1st degree burns off them. What it means is essentially "use more energy".
      Personally, I think it relates to the East Asian concept of Qi or "inner life force" and saying the phrase "fighting/ganbatte/jaioyou" is a way telling of telling someone to stimulate their inner life force to have more of a fighting spirit. You asked if the age thing is really that serious or only in drama. Even though it s becoming less so nowadays due to westinization and stuff but still in most sectors in society it s a big deal, For example in earlier episodes Jian often talked down to Dong Hoon and that mean female boss at work, which is totally inconceivable in real life. It happens only in drama. ^^;

    But till we reach there, Thank you for doing this.

      I can't even think of which scenes to focus on in the last eipsode....wish me luck! I'll try to get there as soon as I can!👍😉

      Wish you luck; the last episode is pretty easy though, it has to be the last scene. The episodes before that will be tough, there are so many good scenes in each one of them. Good luck and can’t wait 😊

      I like scenes where people meet, not where they leave 😞. I hate goodbyes and funerals ( also goodbye). Please select the happy one, let’s be happy! 😀

    In Korea, the word "fighting" is commonly used at the following cases:
    1) Use it to cheer up when you lose an athletic game.
    2) It is used to overcome difficult situations together.
    3) Use it to wish success before a big event.
    4) It means let's do our best.
    5) Also used as a pep talk between colleagues.
    In fact "Fighting" is incorrect use of English. We call these types of misused English words as "Konglish" (Korean-English? :-))

      Yeah it may be incorrect but it makes a lot of sense! 👊😉 Thanks for adding this!

    The 30,000 years is a reference to the Buddhist theme of reincarnation. While it could be interpreted as physically having 30,000 different lives, the concept of reincarnation is also interpreted figuratively. We all have instances where something brings us down, depresses us. This cycle of suffering is a repeating one and we are foolish to fall into that same trap, 30,000 times. It is therefore a form of self-criticism of Ji-an and Dong-hoon pities her for being self-critical.

      Thank you for adding this...the self criticism aspect makes a lot of sense and really adds meaning👍🙂

    It's misreading that, in Korean society, Jeong-hee is considered to be the age when she can no longer get in love with a man. As Dong-hoon's mom said, she could've chosen anyone she wanted in her pub. But, as Jeong-hee is portrayed as a very single-minded character, it is nonsense to say that she was prostituted in Thailand. See nothing happened with Dong-hoon for 15 days when they were in 20's while they were looking for her lover who became a monk?

      Didn't really understand that. did someone suggest she was a prostitute in thailand?? I've never heard that.?

    First of all, great thank for your revew of “my mister” it’s one of my best tv series….
    You mentioned “if lee sun kyun sing a song…..”
    Yeh….He sang a song for drama “1st branch of coffee prince(커피프린스 1호점)” …the song title is “ocean travel(바다여행)”
    My indivisual opinion is he is great actor but he is not a good singer(이선균님…죄송합니다…ㅠㅠ).
    I saw on a tv show he sang the song but that song was not what I thought…..
    Here is the link of the song which lee sun kyun sang….ua-cam.com/video/13YXdmE8BmM/v-deo.html

    Based on what Yu-ra said, I wonder if there is polygamy in Korea? Is it legal?
