Creating a New Way Forward for the Anxious Brain w/ Dr. Kate Truitt

- Dr. Kate Truitt begins by explaining that our brains are hardwired to try to identify what might come as a means of survival. For brains that are highly driven towards anxiety or stress, this can cause a lot of disturbance and pain.
Next, Dr. Kate discusses how counterfactual thinking is the idea that our brain will take facts and make up stories about other possibilities. Fear based “what ifs…” are frequently a form of counterfactual thinking. Counterintuitively, our brain is doing this to help us stay alive. It’s saying that if I can anticipate the future, then I can adjust my course in order to stay safe, successful, and lovable.
Then she explains how we can utilize creating possibilities protocol to spin counterfactual thinking in a productive way. We know that our brain is going to tell us stories, so let’s give those stories a new job! We can shift “what if I was anxious?” to “what if I was excited?”
In order to make these “what if…” statements feel plausible, we can invite ourselves to link into a past experience where we’ve felt that desired sense or envision a symbolic representation of that desired sense.
