We control Kris themself, since we make them use ACT and have them say to their allies which spells and acts to use. We control them all, regardless if our vessel is out of commission.
@@ostrich8BC No, *we* are in control. From what we know, why would Kris want to force a childhood friend of theirs to murder her own friend? Super minor detail: they changed one single pixel on Berdly's sprite during his fight for this route, making him look like he's serious instead of smugly smiling. They also altered his expression during his attack.
It's fascinating how after ripping their soul out that Kris just does the same things they do in a regular play through. I dunno man if I got back in control of my body after all of that my first though wouldn't be "hey let's go slash my mom's tires"
I feel like Kris probably went outside to stab things so they didn't hurt Tori or Susie, it can't be easy when someone else has control of your body the majority of the time. 👀
spoilers maybe and just my theory but at this point I wonder if the thing forcing Kris to do these things when the Human soul gets out, is it actually Kris or is another entity, because of the things in this snowgrave route, were the characters who are influenced by the dark, the seller, the queen and spamson seem to refer to him as ''angel'' and ''knight'' when acting like this, but they dont if you just act neutral or pacifist, and the mention of the voice not being actually kris's voice giving the commands, for now seems very clear like, the Knight and the Angel are using Kris body's, but there is a chance that, the Red soul is kris and when Kris acts without it is actually being forced by this evil because they need a human vessel to do these things, and for some reason Kris got infected or possesed by it, and the possesion gets stronger if we behave this way because we are doing their will, or is Kris who when insane and wants to do these things being self aware of what he is doing, also ralsei, I played blindly and noticed something odd about Ralseis behavior, but after this route there is something even more odd about him, the way he acts feels like he is hiding something, but can still be a missunderstanding, and how he knows from the beggening so much about the real world, Kris and Susie names and even most of the times gives intructions direcly to the player, feels like knows is manipulating us and talking to us and not to Kris, to a level a bit more scary of how flowey was.
@@SettMetabolik kris with the soul ripped out is actual kris. kris with the soul inside is the player controlling them. this is canon to the story - when the soul is in the cage, you can still control it, and spamton (a puppet) says that kris is just like him, controlled by something else.
@@mangounit9678 I know in that sense, but Kris still while being in our lead, does things like reacting, stepping back, being self aware, what Spamton points out is kinda true but he is also trying to deceive Kris into something, I still think Kris is either being possesed by some entity, if not, then he is up to something evil, but there is a reason why the Human Soul is something they want to take away from him, is still speculation for me, the whole picture is still to be seen with all the chapters.
@@SettMetabolik kris is up to whatever were up to. kris is controlled by us, the player. any moment of reaction is rare; everything else is you and me. whether you like it or not, kris has no control. so them trying to get rid of the soul, in an attempt to gain freedom, is not evil.
Is it strange (and a little cool) that when I played this route, I actually felt like I had to be careful of what I said to Noelle to keep her under my control. After she killed Berdly and said "I'm gonna go home" and walked away, in my head I was like 'crap! we're not done yet!' and felt the urgency to run after her. I love it when video games have the ability to suck you in like that. It's like it's making you think differently than you normally would. Like from a different perspective I mean. I love the pacifist routes, but in my opinion, the genocide routes are always more interesting
God, I absolutely love the way Toby does horror. While on its own genocide route wouldn't be nearly as impactful, contrasted with the pacifist route it becomes so delightfully.. painful. It makes me shiver under my blanket, and yet I just don't want to stop watching, just as it was with Undertale.
I'd like to bring attention to the fact that at the end of the Spamton Neo fight (2:00:52) It says "YOU whispered Noelle's name" while the other two say it's KRIS calling out for help. I like how supportive and nice everyone else is to Noelle especially after the "Weird" experience whcih also singles out the player for their actions.
Amazing observation!! This is true! We could even assume with a far fetched reach that the thorn ring and the trance condition are directly our influence as players and I even have some reasons to believe the Thorn Ring is one of W.D. Gaster's inventions.
2:13:59 Susie interrupts your choice once again, but this time to save Noelle from your manipulation, albeit unintentionally. Still, it would be pretty cool if this was foreshadowing for Susie to become a Sans-style surprise boss later in this route.
watching this makes me really uncomfortable. this is such a terrifying look at the agency of the player in the gameworld, and watching it successfully makes me feel every part the manipulative voyeur this route paints you to be as the one playing with it - even thought im just watching it on youtube, which im sure the next chapters will call me out for. this is the most compelling gaming horror ive ever encountered
How terrifying must it be for Noelle to look into the eyes of her neighbour and see them: A: Blankly staring back at her, which would make their movements seem zombie-like. B: Glaring back at her, which is what I suspect since they advance on her if she doesn't obey. Poor lil' fawn. 🥺
Spamson NEO is an optional secret boss in pacifist but I like how they force you to fight him in genocide spamson is strange and what is a pipis and why does he like them
My best guess is that originally Spamton can’t get in with all the staff there but by going on the murder spree there’s no one left or everyone ran away leaving the castle empty so Spamton just waltzes in and steals the body himself. He still needs a soul tho as referenced in the pacifist Spamton fight so he still goes after you also because he doesn’t want you to seal the fountain.
Toby Fox knows well how to make "genocide" runs unfun. I mean, you have to sacrifice so much of the comedy (Potassium, boat ride with Ralsei etc.) to finish this route.
That’s how it is supposed to be. The original genocide route is a master class of making punishing and shitty gameplay into golden goose artistic genius. Toby is reviving that.
Man, after watching the walkthrough for this route... Yeah, I don't have enough balls to ruin the feelings of wholesomeness after completing this chapter in pacifist route. I felt so bad for Queen though... Either she really didn't know what happened to the inhabitants of the cyber world or that she's trying to play it cool. Of course she'll knew about "someone" going around the city freezing everybody on sight. At least, she must've have been made aware of the stuff happening in the city. If she did, maybe she is in denial that the person doing that is seen with Kris in the city. The thought of Kris doing something horrible (and to Noelle) probably hard for Queen to take in. Another thing that makes this run far more gut-wrenching is when the Darkners flee upon seeing you and Noelle. It's just messed up that they knew they couldn't really fend for themselves for too long because Noelle's getting stronger each time. Thanks for the video!
1:08:41 - The game officially recognizes you're decidedly on the Snowgrave Route, and the music changes from "Welcome to the City" to "It's Cold in the City". Not a point of no return, but it's here where it becomes blatantly obvious that you're focusing on killing everyone. And the tone shifts with the music.
Whats intresting about Spamton is that if you just fight him the one time in a normal playthrough and dont do the secret boss you wont think much of Spamton. You will only know more about him if you dig deeper by fighting the secret boss, going to his shop, and doing the snowgrave route
Kris commands Noelle to kill that one salesperson without hesitation but doesn't tell her to kill Spamton for his ring. If Kris can't afford the ring, the run is failed. It sounds like either the one controlling Kris knowingly needed Spamton for something or they were too scared to fight Spamton without needing to.
I like the theory that secret bosses are former player characters, which explains why they got "corrupted" by a mysterious past experience. It does explain why Spamton is not as easily affected as the rest of the NPCs.
@@thibautisserant Right... Jevil was supposed to be a cool dude until he become a psychopath. Makes sense if he was corrupted by a genocide-route player
This whole route is worst then Undertale's genocide, because it feels a lot more personal and sickening. You're just forcing Kris' childhood friend to commit murder.
I've checked through the comments and I don't see anyone else mentioning it, though I could be wrong... But in the normal route if you talk to Sans at the end of Chapter 2 and mention about his brother Sans states that his brother is currently busy and for you to check back tomorrow, although in the Snowgrave route Sans will instead tell you that meeting up with his brother is probably not a good idea anymore.
@@renanovitasari373 she was trying to move at the part where kris was exactly at the position of the forcefield thus implicating that she wants to get kris be electrocuted and kill them Plus, Noelle was so thirsty of killing or freezing other characters in the game that's why she talked to herself about if what she's doing is good or not about moving away from the button that kept the forcefield
Looks like she hesitated because she is not the type of person to actually kill or fight. But thanks to us using Kris to coerce her, she is now a murderer thanks to us. Also, Kris is her childhood friend so it makes sense why she would second-guess right in that moment.
She didn't *truly* try to move off the button. She merely contemplated it. Even if she stepped forward a bit, when it really mattered, she didn't actually have it in her to step off that button and kill Kris. It was an intrusive thought, one she actively rejected.
What I don't understand is how the pink Addison recognizes Noelle and Kris as murderers, is completely fine with it, and has a special item in his stock that is catered to the demographic of murderers specifically. Maybe recognizing murderers and giving them special offers is something that their species is just... programmed to do? Because after all Spamton does the same thing with the ThornRing, only offers it to you when he recognizes you as murderers, and by the looks of it he is the same species as the Addisons. Creepy. I guess that it would make sense for them to make offers that cater to you (because of cookies) but it's still creepy. And reveals that the friendly smiling Addisons have a dark side, a side where they're eager to cooperate with murderers.
This.. this is terrifying. And even more disturbing than Undertale's, in my opinion. Thoughts below. (Spoilers:) Even if Undertale's genocide path involves you taking control of, and subsequently corrupting Frisk, it's nowhere near as direct. It's more about the violence you inflict on others than on Frisk themselves. In this route, that's still a factor, but made worse by the fact that you're twisting... manipulating... traumatizing someone to do it. And a sweet, innocent person at that, who would have never done any of this on her own. Much like the original, it's very meta, too. In RPGs, how many creatures do we command our party members to destroy, all for the sake of "getting stronger?" (More specifically, the party members who start out weak, but have the most potential.) It becomes less about the person, and more about how they can accomplish your goals. In this route, ironically, it was Queen who truly cared about her as a person, however misguided her actions were. To Kris (or more accurately, to the player), Noelle was nothing but a source of power. A weapon to command, no matter how she felt about it. And the amount of abuse it took to get her there, the countless times she begged for you to stop... it's haunting. No one could possibly deserve that, Noelle least of all. The poor girl. Edit: One more thing: The voice Noelle is hearing, the one commanding her. That's gotta be the player, right? People have commented on how Kris seems different lately... which lines up with when the game starts (following that creepy intro), and we take control. When Kris takes out their Soul, is that them retaking control from us? After all, we do control that heart (during combat,) and Susie even comments on Kris's lack of control ("It's not like someone needs to tell you to sit, right?) ...It seems Kris is the Roaming Knight, based on the ending of this chapter. But what does that mean for us? Is Kris going through the same emotions as Noelle because of our input? Are we protecting people by taking control, or only making things worse? Only time will tell, I suppose.
It's interesting, because it seems to me that Kris without the heart is pretty bad (the knifes, the making fountains), and thus, not the same person they were implied to be before. Because although all of the characters say Kris was a bit of a loner, and known for playing pranks, they don't seem to be painted as a knife wielding, tyre slashing zombie. So is it possible that they've only become that way because somehow we came to control control their soul, and in trying to escape that they remove their soul? And by removing one's soul, they become something seemingly evil? However, perhaps not as evil as the evil we can force them to commit. It really makes me wonder what the next chapters will bring. After all, 5 whole more chapters of murder will certainly be a lot. Not anywhere near as short as undertale's original genocide route.
@@rex_yaldabaoth could you somehow relate what Spamton says at the end of his pacifist fight? In the end his strings are what kept him alive? Is the soul that we control him through, a necessary thing for him to be the "hero" of the story, regardless of the fact that we take control of him? To sacrifice control, does he sacrifice becoming the hero?
@@db5094 I mean, perhaps, but we haven't had control of them for their entire life. Of course, that doesn't mean that they were a hero before we took control, but they certainly weren't a villain either. @@db5094 I feel like that's why ralsei says that Kris is screaming when you say you aren't ok after the spamton fight in Pacifist. I wonder if anything special happens if you abort the Snowgrave route during the Berdly fight but you let Berdly's arm get broken later. You'd think Noelle would have some kind of reaction to that since it's strong evidence that the "dream" was real.
1:21:46 the tree from chapter one is sketched on the wall. this directly ties spamton to the egg man, and spamton neo (in pacifist route) has obvious gaster symbolism that susie points out (puppets, strings, hands, darkness). this is a direct tie between gaster and the tree man - actual evidence that says that the guy behind the tree was gaster himself.
I’m thinking Gaster is going to be the last secret boss or something like that, he keeps showing up and I feel like he has to be relevant in deltarune somehow! Maybe he’s controlling the secret bosses (spamton and Jevil) for some mysterious plan.
I wonder who froze all the puzzles before Noelle and Kris even got to some of the areas, though... (During the Genocide run, it was Flowey's vines having 'solved' all of them)
My theory is that as Noelle "gets stronger", her ice magic starts to spread further as well. It starts as just freezing the enemies but eventually, it ends up covering up the environment environment as well.

I think the player's ability to use Kris to control others was actually foreshadowed in the Jevil fight in Chapter 1. Using Hypnosis costs you all three turns but the text when using it (Kris stares strangely) implies that Kris is the only one actually doing anything & they just needed Susie & Ralsei to stop paying attention for a moment. Susie & Ralsei's animations do just happen to involve them looking away. I'm not implying Kris is controlling Susie & Ralsei. They might've just told 'em to look away. I think the hypnosis itself may be the entity inside Kris using its influence on Jevil though.

2:11:56 i have so many thoughts on this last noelle cutscene the game scripts snowgrave route to be a constant active decision on your part, and has you forget to take kris's desires into account until after berdly is killed when susie and ralsei notice kris looks really distressed. this scene forces the player to confront their actions directly. because there's nothing visual to look at onscreen, the player can't even see kris, just noelle's words, leaving how noelle looks up to their imagination. the player feels VERY separate from kris at this moment as noelle talks about how terrifying their voice sounds and how weird kris has been acting lately, with the player already knowing why. when you do the snowgrave route, the game knows, in the words of flowey, "i'm doing this because i HAVE to know what happens. ha ha ha, what an excuse!" because you feel so separate from kris in the moment, you feel much more exposed. YOU did this, not the little nonbinary kid on your screen (and maybe this is just me thinking like this, but on some monitors when your screen is black you can see the reflection of your face... I never realised you could cast Snowgrave while Kris is down. Mechanically, it makes sense, since Snowgrave is in Noelle's list of spells, but story-wise, it's interesting how the player can still speak to Noelle even when their vessel (Kris) is unconscious, and command her to act.
We control Kris themself, since we make them use ACT and have them say to their allies which spells and acts to use. We control them all, regardless if our vessel is out of commission.
The thing is... its almost like the vessel is in control
@@ostrich8BC No, *we* are in control. From what we know, why would Kris want to force a childhood friend of theirs to murder her own friend? The characters may have described Kris as a creepy introvert, but they never described them as a bad person. We choose to do Snowgrave, we choose to manipulate Noelle into killing Berdly, and we choose to force Kris to watch in horror as we command Noelle through their voice against their will. *We* are the true enemy, and Kris doesn’t care if we spare or attack Darkners, they want to be free from us.

the incredibly long pause from the player after Queen asks Kris where everyone is made this all the more unsettling

It sounds like either the one controlling Kris knowingly needed Spamton for something or they were too scared to fight Spamton without needing to.

not kill, she wanted kris to fail the puzzle. not kill
@@renanovitasari373 she was trying to move at the part where kris was exactly at the position of the forcefield thus implicating that she wants to get kris be electrocuted and kill them
Plus, Noelle was so thirsty of killing or freezing other characters in the game that's why she talked to herself about if what she's doing is good or not about moving away from the button that kept the forcefield
(Spoilers:)
Even if Undertale's genocide path involves you taking control of, and subsequently corrupting Frisk, it's nowhere near as direct.
After all, we do control that heart (during combat,) and Susie even comments on Kris's lack of control ("It's not like someone needs to tell you to sit, right?)
...It seems Kris is the Roaming Knight, based on the ending of this chapter.
@@db5094 I mean, perhaps, but we haven't had control of them for their entire life. oh god. could you imagine Doki Doki Literature Club written by Toby? especially with all the alternate routes you can take in the game. just imagine the way he’d write that.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who got the sayonara vibes T_T
@@ryefryzz Imagine like, Sayori as Noelle
Wait a sec... On spamton neo's defence phase, it says "but nobody came..." Reminds me of a gen-
KEYgen
-and yes i know what you meant i just saw an opportunity for funni and took it-
*sans music*
1:25:12 story, so ı was fïghting berdly and dıdnt know ı had to defend, so ı used iceshock on him but that kicked me out of the snowgrave route with berdly saying ı defeated him and ı ruıned it
I love this route, not as much as i love the wholesome normal route, but turning the world on its head and corrupting her like this is..idk its interesting and unique in a macbe and dark sorta way
Noelle having intrusive thoughts about hurting kris tho 😲
Love your thoroughness! Thanks for uploading!
The end of the neo spamton boss fight is. horrifying.
Every time you choose to call for help, it always says *Kris* calls for [name]
but when its Noelle, it switches to *You*
2:06:55 "I bet you have lots of people to talk to"
"Not really, no."
I still can't believe I actually played through all of that, in retrospect it's so mortifying
[SPAMTON]: DONT YOU KNOW [Neo] IS KNOWN FOR ITS GREAT DEFENSE?
Mettaton NEO:
I find this bit at 1:46:27 so creepy. Like queen is normally a jokey, flamboyant, comic relief character, but here she says something so serious and poetic, it's so out of character. And the darker darker bit like 👌👌👌
The way the music gets deeper at 1:24:43 is genuinely terrifying
HOLY- THAT'S SNOWGRAVE!?
2:11:56 i have so many thoughts on this last noelle cutscene
the game scripts snowgrave route to be a constant active decision on your part, and has you forget to take kris's desires into account until after berdly is killed when susie and ralsei notice kris looks really distressed. this scene forces the player to confront their actions directly. because there's nothing visual to look at onscreen, the player can't even see kris, just noelle's words, leaving how noelle looks up to their imagination. the player feels VERY separate from kris at this moment as noelle talks about how terrifying their voice sounds and how weird kris has been acting lately, with the player already knowing why. when you do the snowgrave route, the game knows, in the words of flowey, "i'm doing this because i HAVE to know what happens. ha ha ha, what an excuse!" because you feel so separate from kris in the moment, you feel much more exposed. YOU did this, not the little nonbinary kid on your screen (and maybe this is just me thinking like this, but on some monitors when your screen is black you can see the reflection of your face... "it's only you" "it's what they call 'you'" etc etc). YOU tricked noelle into doing something horrifying she doesn't even know was real. YOU have to stick by your actions, YOU have sick intentions.
i feel DESTROYED
i feel absolutely fantastic
oh my fucking god you already know i'm rewatching this for the new lore
waitt what do you mean
*P R O C E E D*
that was f'd up.
I love how they straight up made ralsei’s attack sparkles
