Dear Frieda, Thank you for expressing your feelings about the current climate re Zionism, and esp. your reaction to negative personal email messages. Please keep in mind that historically, this is nothing new. Jews have for centuries been blamed, scapegoated, and attacked for all kinds of nonsensical reasons. It's so easy! Do not take it personally, and please continue your wonderful work explaining and familiarizing (whomever tunes in,) via UA-cam and your tour biz. It truly providing excellent insights into the Hasidic Jewish community in the USA. Mysel,f a convert to Reform Judaism (6 yrs.) I'm eager to learn about all branches of Judaism, our long history and practices, and of course, very saddened by the ongoing war situation in Israel. I so appreciate your middle-of-the-road approach presented through a personal journey out of orthodoxy, but retaining love of positive aspects of this extreme conservatism. May your journey continue with fruitful results and personal rewards. Thank you!

*Anti-Zionism is the most sustained, broad, ruthless and potentially effective ideological and physical attack on Jews as a collective in the post World War II Era. It is designed to render Jews defenseless and homeless once more. Call it what you will.*

Frieda, I share your visceral love for our country, and I want to offer a different perspective on antisemitism. This may sound counterintuitive, but this deranged flood of Jew hatred, actually thrills me.
We were raised with the premise, and it's that one premise that has withstood the test of time, that “ Esav hates Yaacov”. This is not just a biblical assertion, but one that Jean Paul Sarta has called a biological imperative.
From a Darwinian perspective Antisemitism makes so much sense!
The world is a jungle. And within that jungle there is that one tiny tribe of animal, with the prowess, brains and virility to procure more game than any of the other animals! For centuries, despite the universal and collective hunts against them, this endangered species is still Top Dog.
Why are we dismayed, when we are perceived as “White Supremacists” and Privileged?
After the holocaust, for a little while, we were so pitied that Antisemitism even went out of vogue. Is that what we want again? Do we ever want to be perceived as passive and weak victims? “I prefer condemnation to consolation,” said Golda Meir, and I agree.
Let’s hope that we Jews will continue to convince the world that we are the Chosen. I hope we continue to give them a million reasons to envy and despise us.

@@hozenT.This is some bizarre form of social Darwinism, and is nonsense. Research has shown that in many cases, in the animal world, it’s the animals who are able to cooperate and get along with others that survive best. Your attitude is also racist.
And let it be said for the sake of anyone reading this: the vast majority of Jewish people do not agree with this ridiculous set of statements. It’s normal for any group to be proud of its members’ achievements. To advocate for its members to suffer is pathological.

Good imagine living in Israel, and suddenly everyone is calling you a zionist and wanting to cut off your throat. They use this word like it is a bad thing. 50 percent of the Jews around the world live in Israel and are zionist. so those who want zionist dead, want half of the Jews around the world dead. it is antisemitism in disguise

Oh Frieda, your thoughtfulness in sharing this heartbreaking situation is so wonderful, so needed. Hate is not innocent or an accident. There is evil, distortion of mind, loss of heart in these people. I'm a Christian who is grateful to God for you. To say as you do, "Here's me, & offer up a prayer in the hope it may be a blessing for all of the lost ones..." I believe God hears this prayer in your humble sincerity & bravery. Love you, Frieda. I have NEVER been inside an orthodox Jewish home or least of all been part of a shabbat or festive meal, but you had made it possible for me to experience this in some way, and also to enlighten me about Jewish orthodox life. If I may... I'd like to apologize for the terrible injustices, untruths, libel, hate and even violence that many of my people, Muslims, have directed at your co-religionists, including that of Oct 7. I really think you misunderstand a Humanist perspective, it takes nothing away from people of any religion our ethics and morals are just as strong as any religion. Why should we declare a hypocritical belief in something we don't truly feel, that does undermine true believers. I believe should their unexpectedly be a god I meet upon death, I think a decent god would judge me on my actions to care and help other humans, not how many hours I didn't spend praying to a god to carry out actions I ought to be helping many religious and non religious people cooperate to create a peaceful and fruitful world for all regardless of belief. Enjoy your religion, I'm very unconcerned about a soul I may or maynot possess. I am extremely concerned about the conditions of life for my fellow human beings. I am concentrating on the here and now and the actions humans can take responsibility for. Life after death is something that can concern me at the time. Any comfort that people obtain from their religion I am all in favour of their are many devote people in many different religions, if they do good not harmful fighting other religions I support their beliefs for them. I'm Humanist and deserve equal respect for my view and actions in the world too. I wish you well and thank you for your concern for my welfare.

Thank you for being courageous enough to speak. I cannot imagine your internal struggle. There is the innocent voice of the child who had certain beliefs inculturated into her vs the voice of the adult, no longer innocent, who questions. I have never lived any part of the Hasidic experience. I believe one of the Mysteries of life is that God gave every human being free will. Self determination is a form of exercising what God has given us. I see Israel as a maturation in which some Jews have chosen to take responsibility for their life & step away from victimhood. I believe that we have no choice about being a victim as a child. As an adult if we are still being victims we have volunteered. I am learning a lot from watching your channel. I learn a lot about myself as I watch my personal reactions to some of what I see. Please keep offering us your experience & your point of view.

As a Jewish person, I think it's not that complex. The issue is human rights and self-determination. It's not religious, it's not cultural. It's racial, like South Africa, and it's socioeconomic/political. But when we look at who, historically has had a say, it has always been the secular Zionists and Christian Zionists. Palestinians never had a seat at the table, even among the Arab league, up until Arafat's entrance to the UN.
If it were the Scottish, or the Laotians, who had a claim to Historic Palestine and started colonizing it, the response would be the same. It's not because we're Jewish. It's because we need to share. Not take. Live together, not apart.

Freida, my heart breaks listening to this video. The depth of your feelings is emblematic of the way we are supposed feel about fellow human beings. Your pain, so evident in your words, that people can feel this way is not naive but it is child-like in the best way in that it is a prayer for a better world that still does not exist. In the Christian Bible Matthew chapter 18, verse 3 recounts Jesus telling his adult followers “Truly I say to you, unless you change and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” It was recounted that Ronal Reagan once said that if it wasn’t for women, men would still be wearing loin cloths. Women are the civilizers in civilization and your pain reflects thats. I’ve been an admirer of you and what you’re about. You are a bridge builder in so many ways. Thank you for this video. “May the Lord bestow favor on you, and grant you peace.”

I appreciate this essay very much. I want to say that the timing of the Rebbe is absolutely wrong, because in 1939 Germany, the Zionists had not organized to the degree that it could cause this “punishment” of the Holocaust. It was only AFTER the Holocaust that the Zionists had organized sufficiently to actually realize the settling of the land. The modern state of Israel was created in 1948, but the Holocaust started in 1938-1939 to 1945. So the notion that the Holocaust is a punishment for Israel is patently false.
In fact, the Satmar Rabbi did not help his town survive the Holocaust. He did not encourage his followers to leave and escape the Nazis which could have saved them. He did not help or encourage them to leave early even to other countries. He only saved himself and his close helpers by getting only a few visas secretly. He then was saved by the Zionist Kastner Train that saved over a thousand Jews. He then arrived in USA. He was very extreme and some say it’s because he was trying to hide his shortcomings in not saving more of his followers from Nazis.
In fact Zionism is really just our yearning for our homeland that is pervasive in the Torah. It is actually false that the Torah says we must wait for a messiah in order to settle the land of Israel. Because the Torah does not mention a Messiah. The concept of a messiah is actually rabbinic and Talmudic. But even there it doesn’t say we can’t go back to Israel until a messiah comes, because the Early rabbis after our exile always did yearn to return and did in fact return when they could for centuries. After our Second Temple was destroyed and we were exiled in year 70 CE and even more after 160 CE after Bar Kochba, to Babylon, there was actually always a remnant of Jews who remained in Israel in Yavneh, Safed, Tiberius, Hebron, Haifa and Jerusalem. And for centuries, Jews always continually returned and there was always Jews in Judea throughout the centuries even until the 1800’s and 1900’s when the idea of Zionism as a formal movement was formed with the idea to establish a state of Israel which only was realized AFTER the Holocaust.
What the Rebbe Was correct about was that many of the Zionists who helped establish the Modern state of Israel were socialists and communists and completely secular , and thus did not want to follow Torah Law as a basis for the country as in the Torah. Also, they were establishing the state without the building of temple as described by Ezra the prophet that he did upon the return from the first exile and without a messiah to build it as rebbee Yoel says is needed. Even to this day there is tension between the religious and secular leaders on what Torah laws should be followed- such as if buses should run on Shabbos.. So in this sense he was correct.

Frieda, thank you. I wish I was closer so I could give you a big hug and we could gently shed tears together. I do not understand this “baby killer” image you kept repeating about the Jewish people. As a Christian, I was never taught or shown this but was shown that G-D’s chosen people were always under threat and mistreated even before Jesus was born. After the “invasion” last year, unrest broke out on our university campus. I wanted to go to the Hillel House to show my support. I had to walk through Muslims calling me names and had police protection to get closer to the building. I explained why I wanted to enter and the police got me closer to the entrance and the intercom and then was granted access into the building by those inside. I was kindly spoken with and offered a chair in a room where I think everyone might have been Jewish (except me.). I was offered tea which a woman brought to me and we talked. She said I would never be allowed to enter a synagogue during this war because of heightened security (& you taught me and I was allowed in in June!). And then they seated an elderly male next to me and introduced him as a Holocaust survivor and I saw his tattoo and wept. HOW can the world continue to hate like this? I am really struggling with Islamic followers at the moment- how with their violence towards Jews and Christians can I even like them let alone love them? And I watch a video from Frieda with gentleness and hope and I need to step back and my heart needs to do another summersault. PLEASE keep doing what you are doing. As someone else said, that GET one….. G-D gave you a very special gift; thank you for sharing it with so many of us who choose to listen and learn; change and grow.

I'm probably going to be the only dissenting opinion in your comment section and I apologize for that. I appreciate your story and can empathize with your beliefs and opinions. I was brought to your channel through one of your walking tours then went to the channel and saw this video and decided to watch I'm not a random anti zionist who wants to start an argument jsyk.
I understand your internal conflict between how your community chose to "resist" by having a pacifist religious belief, your personal experiences in your community, and the safety and acceptance Israel makes you feel. I'd ask you where in your history the people of Palestine or the Ottoman Empire in general were responsible for the collective trauma of the Jewish diaspora. I'd like to ask you why you are allowed to visit Jerusalem and experience safety in Israel while the Palestinian people who, younger than you, will never experience the safety you feel. When they fight back on October 7th is that not in agreeance with your idea that people should not be pacifists while they are being routinely oppressed?
As an African American person with living ties to the Jim Crow era U.S. south and who still exists in the US as a black person I understand the desire for a homeland where your community has self determination. America tried that with Liberia in the 19th century and the results of that are why I personally never understood the idea that Israel, while being a homeland for Jewish people, could exclusively function that way. It's impossible to install a country in a place where people already live and turn that into an ethnostate. Inevitably there will be friction and oppression because it's baked into the idea of it being an ethnostate where one group of people gets priority over the other. Is that not similar in any way to segregation? Is that not similar in any way to apartheid?
Suffice it to say, if your safety calls for you to bomb people you've put in cages I'm unsure of who gets the priority to feel safe in that situation. Israel has so much power over the Palestinian people and it seems like instead of trying to overcome the hostility they've helped create and maintain because of the disparate state of living, they've decided these people, mostly children, deserve death for existing.
I understand completely that your feelings are confusing but if you can talk about the antisemitism since October 7th you can discuss the horrors the Palestinian people have dealt with since October 7th and before.
I think people online are stupid and I do not conflate Zionism with Jewish people. So, you at least know that there's one Anti Zionist who does not agree with what Israel is doing, has done, and questions ethnostates as reparations, BUT knows that Jewish people are not responsible for the state of Israel. I empathize with your concern but again, the people who are currently dying in large numbers are Palestinians and this video barely mentions them while centering your opinions on Israel, which this is your channel you're allowed to do, but every video about Israel is the same as this video. "Israel makes me feel safe, antisemitism is on the rise, can't talk about the death of those people tho, please center my feelings". Do you see what I mean?
When you mention that the idea behind Israel and your personal desire of not wanting the holocaust or genocide in general to happen again does that only count for Jewish people or for other groups who may be victims of a genocide? Cause there have been a lot of genocides and others are currently happening besides the one on Palestinians and I don't hear anything about those from supporters of Israel either.
We disagree on some things but i've watched this entire video in good faith and with empathy for your point of view. I hope you can do the same if you read my comment.

This war is not betweenIsrael and Palestine. This war is between Israel and Iran. The people of Gaza are caught in a battlefield of Iran's choosing. After the Israeli occupation of Gaza was ended in 2005 and replaced by a Palestinian (Authority) governemnt, it was Iran's choice to overthrow the Palestinian government, replace it with stooges of Iran, and turn all of Gaza into a fort. I blame Iran for Israeli atrocities, just like I blame the Nazis, and not the Allies, for the atrocities that the Allies committed on German civilians in WWII.

I haven't read all your messages I only want to reply about ethnostate. Of course Israel is not an ethnostate. I live in Russia myself and my relatives live in Israel. Israel is a great and amazing variety of cultures and races, they are mixed, it's cool. First of all, Arab citizens, they are 2 mln, Arab language has official status, you can see and listen it everywhere, in documents, in public transport. There are Arabic schools and many students in Hebrew schools study Arabic as the second language. There are big museums of Arabic and Muslim cultures, exhibitions etc. Further, Bedouin citizens. Their culture is also supported, traditions etc. Druzes is a big community also with original culture. Also in Jerusalem and other Christian places Italian, Russian etc. monks live. Finally, just a lot of people of different ethnicities who are wives and husbands of Jews and they often are more Israel' livers than Jews. Yes, this government includes some ministers who are far-right and dream about ethnostate. It's sad and dangerous for Israel. But Israel ISN'T an ethnostate now. It's a very multicultural society.

    • @ENT756
      @ENT756 29 днів тому

      @@речкаречкаручеек Israel is a settler-colonial immigration state.
Of course, it is a multicultural society, because all Jewish people, who immigrate to Israel are foreigners - so-called "birthright" of Jews - who have nothing to do with Palestinians and Palestine, genetically.
      The land belongs to Palestinians.
A nationalist colonial-settler ethno-state is a state of people, who are all coming from different countries, with different ethnicities, but the same religion - Judaism, as does Israel
Thus, Israel is a Jewish state, a supremacist nationalist ethno-state.

Frieda, thank you so much. I cried a bit after listening to you, because this is exactly how I feel about everything. I feel alone and scared after 7 October 2023. My family comes from the Soviet Union where they survived unimaginable antisemitic horrors. We live in Europe now and for a year, the harassment has been unreal. A few weeks ago, a teen was uncovered who planned an attack on the local Jewish community where my mom works. I'm so heartbroken. The most horrible thing was that in the eyes of many, we as people don't deserve to be treated with dignity and somehow, the core values of the democratic society aren't applying to us. This showed me how quickly our social norms can erode, it just starts with the Jews first. My grandpa's family narrowly escaped the Holocaust and now I try to calm him down that it will be okay because every week he says that "they will come for us". I can't do it anymore 😞 It's hard. Sometimes I think of all these poor hostages and it kills me inside.

And I'm thankful that your grandmother survived; I would love to listen to someone like her. Thank you again for doing what you're doing.

This is simply beautiful and Jewish. Thank you so much for expressing your thoughts in a uniquely vulnerable way. I’m in NYC and I’m hoping to be on your midweek tour. I love your videos. You’re a gem.

I’d bet the people who comment the nasty things don’t listen to you because they’d realize how incredible and sensible you truly are. My wife and j love your videos.

Thank you Frieda for sharing this with your community. You are so gifted, and so thoughtful how you present everything. Always from the most humble and respectful way. I can identify with all you are saying. Life is very scary for us right now with violence and vile slogans right here where I live too. Thank you for open your heart and express for what we all live through right now. When my children traveled to Israel on what is called the birthright trip they were moved to tears, feeling the arrived home! They were raised in SA in an exclusive Jewish community and as young adults we moved to Germany. We always thought of Israel as home !
