4:12 I always loved the implication that there was no research involved for this moment. They can read a persons sins just by looking at them and when Bartleby didn’t immediately see a sin to talk about he had to do a double take to make sure and was even surprised by it.
It absolutely is! It may not be the funniest of his films (Though it is hysterical in several scenes), but I'd say it's the most exciting, the most thought- provoking, and the most intelligently- written of his films. I can imagine a LOT of audience members afterwards having complex discussions about some of the faith- based points this movie brought up.
Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious, but I love how Bartleby first recites the sins for which they were to be punished, and the Loki executes the punishment, since in an earlier scene the movie had established that that was what their roles had been in ancient times as well when they were inflicting divine retribution on Egypt and before that on Sodom.
That was actually the reason they did it, they planned to resume the jobs they quit and then go through the arches to be forgiven for quitting and the murders they committed and be readmitted into heaven, then Jay had to get horny and tried to get laid completely fucking up their plan (yes Jay's ridiculous scenario to have sex with that chick actually saved existence)
About that: in all semi-seriousness, it was inappropriate for Loki to pull a gun on her, but she was *working for* a company that did all these things. She probably didn't know every dirty detail, but when you work for people that sleazy for several years, you begin to pick up on some of it. Still she stayed. But then again: she may have had very little choice in the matter. So it's #complicated.

I'm still confused as to why disowning the son is worthy of being killed. Doesn't matter the reason he disowned him, it's not even close to death worthy.
This scene shows why the fake morality of christianity doesn't work at all in practice. That guy was supposed to have abandoned his son 'cos he was gay, but christians hate gays and the bible calls gays an abomination, so this christian god would have rewarded the guy for abandoning his son.
Especially after clearly hearing revealed the actions that were illegal and punishable with serious prison time (i.e. The sins of Mr. Newman, Mr. Barker, and Mr. Holtzmann). Some people's capacity for evil (Both in what they do, and in what they turn a blind eye to) is sickening.

On the way he stops to climb a mountain to speak to god and is away for something like 30 days. By the time he returns they had begun to worship a golden bull as a false idol, and Moses breaks the tablets with the 10 commandments on them out of anger
I've probably seen this movie dozens of times, and I'm only now realizing that Bartleby forgets to mention Mooby Magazine in his opening, and then during the purge he's reading an issue in the lounge.
Reminds me of the movie Hot Fuzz, all the hundreds of DVD's in the movie night scene where from their personal collection. Unfortunately they found out later someone had stolen some from the movie set. Shame. Shame.
This is one of my favorite scenes ever--it so blatantly exposes (and executes) the corporate lineup for literally ANY business. They exploit their workers and think they can do the same in their personal lives. Says a lot about corporations, about shitty people, about Hollywood itself. It's so self-aware, it's beautiful.

Bonus points: Because of Bartleby she now knows a whole bunch of people who were personally screwed over by the other members of the board (one mother, two sons, an 11 year old boy in SEA, and a whole bunch of people who bought unsafe versions of their products) and can donate whatever she inherits from them to those people. And then join a convent in the middle of nowhere and live in constant fear of Loki returning to cap her.
Businesses are not a hereditary monarchy. The board if there is any would elect new positions and if there isn't a new board to do that would be established. She doesn't get the position by default and being a pure soul I doubt she has the rep or traits to walk into the job.
Fun Fact: this was supposed to be an overly done, John Woo-esque action scene with Matt Damon gunning down the board, this is the reason they’re all burly looking stunt men. At the last minute, Kevin Smith was doubtful that he’d be able to pull it off, so he scrapped it.
I think it's kind of funny that he thinks them believing in the Voodoo doll is ridiculous when for like 5 minutes they've been displaying a supernatural knowledge of their misdeeds I mean why wouldn't they believe it might work at that point.

The villain is God. She created everything and knew everything that would happen. And then punished her creations for doing what she created them to do. Horrific figure.
Dogma really is a classic movie, so many good scenes, dark funny humour, and even a touch or two of actual morality. Kevin Smith's finest work to my mind, and a great Damon & Affleck scene.

When Jason Bourne and Daredevil crash a corporation as angels of vengeance to debase a cartoon idol corporation. Unbelievable this movie piques 25 years.
This movie was just 1-2yrs after Goodwill Hunting, and Matt & Ben still looked about the same as their former characters. The "God bless you when I sneezed" scream is still pretty hilarious and memorable... 😆 👏

Businesses are not a hereditary monarchy. The board if there is any would elect new positions and if there isn't a new board to do that would be established. She doesn't get the position by default and being a pure soul I doubt she has the rep or traits to walk into the job.

This movie was just 1-2yrs after Goodwill Hunting, and Matt & Ben still looked about the same as their former characters. The "God bless you when I sneezed" scream is still pretty hilarious and memorable... 😆 👏
