The kids dad came outside and was yelling at my dad to get me off his kid, and my dad told the kids dad that he’d be next if he tried stopping the fight. For the sake of brevity, my dad wasn’t the friendliest looking guy, so that kids dad had to watch me beat up his kid while I cried the whole time. I didn’t want to, but he made me. I remember that like it happened ten minutes ago. Later in life before he passed away, i got home from a deployment and I asked him why he made me do that. “Because in life you’re gonna get picked on and beat on, and you’re either gonna take it and always get picked on or beat on, or you’ll start swinging and whoever is beating on you will stop. They don’t want to fight, they want a free lunch. Some people are the hammer, some people are the nail. Be the hammer.” He was an awesome dude, he was just a hard MFER. But it’s why I am what I am, and do what it is that I do, because he made me become the hammer. I just have incredible control over that now. Personally, in particularly violent circumstances, my heart rate barely even go up these days. But like Orwell said “people sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stay awake ready to do violence on their behalf to protect their peace”.

    I think what is fascinating about Buddy Revell is that the whole movie is about misunderstood youth. Buddy isn't a bully at all. Buddy literally just wants to be left alone. Jerry spends the entire movie not leaving him alone. Not leaving him alone got him into the fight in the first place. Buddy, essentially, wanted to show everyone by beating Jerry's ass, that he wants to be left alone. Even sending someone to beat him up wasn't leaving him alone. Jerry planting a knife in Buddy's locker to get him expelled, wasn't leaving him alone. Throughout the movie you learn that Buddy loves to read. He's also brilliant, as he showed when they did the math problem in the principles office. And when Jerry tried to buy him off, he was disgusted that Jerry didn't even want to try, and couldn't imagine not being willing to face what was coming to him. This, when the guy Buddy punched out in the library was a good bit bigger than he was, and that guy, in that moment, was actually trying to be a bully. Buddy didn't hesitate one second to take on a bigger foe. And at the end, you learned Buddy was also a stand up guy giving the money back, and was proud of Jerry for the fight, even as three other people helped Jerry win. The very last scene, where everyone is spreading Jerry rumors on how crazy he is, was to tell us that we never knew who Buddy really was, but it wasn't the monster the students at the beginning were building him as, and most of it was likely bullshit.

    • @mikealpinkard80
      @mikealpinkard80 6 місяців тому +10

      Excellent analysis! Buddy technically really wasn't a bully at all & was very misunderstood. He never actually picked on anyone or went out of his way to start any fights or problems. His mantra was simple: Don't touch me, stay outta my way, & leave me alone & we won't have any problems. Break any of those rules & you're gonna have a problem....period. And the fact that he gave Jerry his money back after all that shows that he actually has some integrity & really wasn't the horrible monster & bully that he was made out to be. Glad someone else saw this as well! 💯💯💯

    • @adamrobinette6832
      @adamrobinette6832 6 місяців тому +14

      @@CliftonRouse I did see the beginning. All the stories about him? Did you notice at the end they were telling the same crazy type stories about Jerry? Idea being that most of the Buddy stories where either bullshit or embellished. When Jerry pissed him off, he had every opportunity to walk away before that. Buddy told him calmly he didn't want to talk to him. Jerry kept at it anyway and wouldn't leave him alone. Then called the story he was going to write about him a 'stupid little piece'. Buddy knew why he wanted to write about him, basically so he could be ridiculed and talked about behind his back more than he already was. Everyone already knew Buddy didn't like to be touched. Jerry touched him. Jerry basically begged to set Buddy off. Everything Buddy did in the movie was a self defense mechanism. Shit, even after Jerry pisses him off in the bathroom, plant a KNIFE in his locker, pays a bigger guy to bully Buddy, and then tries to buy Buddy off, in the fight Buddy STILL had to deal with Jerry's girl jumping in the way, his friend literally jumping on Buddy's back buying Jerry all kinds of time, and Jerry's sister helping him get the brass knuckles. And nothing happens at all if Jerry would have just left Buddy alone. That's not a bully.

    • @erestube
      @erestube 6 місяців тому +3

      You could say he wants someone to take the bully mantle from him so he can be left alone. He obviously has potential as a student but others have defined him as something else, and he can't escape from that identity. This movie reminds me of the movie "The Hitcher" (the original) as the bad guy in that film seems to be looking for the one who can relieve him of his misery. It's the same idea about an antagonist looking for a way out.

      One of my best 5th grade pals got picked up and dropped into a ice mud puddle by 3 bullies. In front of the whole class. I dropped my books on the ground and handed my desk partner my coat. The trio were all laughing about it when I came across the yard and lit into them (biggest one first, next closest within striking distance). The leader was backing up to give himself some room and glanced over his shoulder to see how far away the school building was. Wrong move as it gave me the seconds I needed to close that distance.
      When all the teachers came running out, they were still on the ground, trying to stand up. So, at the end of it all, the 3 got five day's suspension and a parent/teacher conference. And I can tell you, this was 1975 and even detention was harsh punishment. No, I didn't care about the odd looks on classmate's faces when I came in the door to class.

    Note to others: when attacked, one way of surviving is to close the distance. This may seem counterintuitive, but it can give your assailant less time to react, then you can have your chance. Be careful though, if your opponent is more experienced than you, this could still be your downfall.

    Bro the dad in the second clip is a real one dude. He’s a tough love father who can be gentle but when it comes to some random bastards taking you’re shoes now he’s mr. John wick and wanna beat the sh!t outta the bully for taking the shoes you’re father had to work hard for just to make sure you can look good everyday at school. NOW THATS A REAL ONE FATHER RIGHT THERE!🗿🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    The 3 O'Clock High clip made me angry, cause a bully can't bully anyone of the ENTIRE school hates him. They'd all gang up on him and go mob justice on his ass.

      There's no such thing as the cliche general bully from hollywood. It's particular kids picking on particular other kids, nobody uninvolved cares.

      Lol, what a grand and intoxicating innocence.
      In my day, when a bully beats up another person in front of everyone at school; besides the teachers, we all watched bc it was entertainment on a boring recess.
      Life is cruel, and no one is coming to your rescue. In fact, I particularly remember when the bystandards encouraged/egged on the fight and then nicked the kids' pocket change after he was down with a bloody nose.

      There's a reason Romans paid to go to the Colliseum. That people pay to watch MMA and WWE fights. This is just the kid version. It's messed up but that's life.

    3 O'clock High is such an underrated nerd versus jock comedy. There's a real sinister edge to it. I love it. Almost like a Lloyd Kaufman movie for normies. Heath Ledger's character in 10 Things I Hate About You always reminded me of a more lighthearted version of the bully.
