Mustang Convertible Pump Fluid check and refill (bleeding)

  • If your convertible roof is slow, noisy or not going up and down all the way it could be that you are short on hydraulic fluid or needing to bleed the system. This is on my 2013 mustang but will apply to most models and other makes as well. The convertible system is actually quite simple so don't be scared.
    The fluid in mine was last changed during the stone age and I really should bleed the whole system. However this video shows you how to top off the fluid and make sure it's at the correct level.

    Thank you for posting this. I had an '03 with a noisy top and opted to remove the pump entirely and drain it. Pure black awfulness came out, about 200ml worth. Refilled with Dex III as per Ford and had to top up the reservoir five times to fully bleed the lines again. It was very loud to start but once bled out it quietened down. Be aware there's no check valve on the ports; The pump will try to leak as you're trying to install it so make sure to have rags to catch the drips as you put the lines back in.
