- Hi All,
Welcome to my lengthy and late review for this amazing new remake of The survival horror classic that is Silent Hill 2.
I first want to thank you for watching this as I put a lot of time and effort compiling this as I didn't want it to just be a run of the mill short video with a score at the end, I really wanted to compare scenes, show references, Easter eggs and dive down deep into this beautifully restored world of Silent Hill 2 !
I was completely wrong with my previous remarks and videos, Bloober team smashed this one out of the park ! its turned out better than I ever could've hoped !
Please consider subscribing to the channel as well as liking and commenting on the video if you did enjoy ! it means the world !
I've been so excited for this video to drop! I loved your enhanced edition lets play, you brought up so many fun facts and details I never thought of. I can't wait for a full playthrough of this
Thank you so much ! Yeah sorry it’s later than most reviews, just taken a while to research and go through it all, and awesome thanks for watching the let’s play too ! If it’s facts and trivia you’re after, you may also like my long analysis style video on the original SH2 it’s called - my love letter to silent hill 2. But thank you so much for watching and supporting ! Hope you enjoy 👍
Already been there!!! It was great. Something you may find interesting is in the remake there is a receipt you can find in the green pharmacy that shows a date, maybe 1982 or 1992, it's hard to read but helps pinpoint when this is
@@Hobbit-yi6on ah thank you that’s great 👍 thanks for all the support, and I did see this on another video recently, there’s tons of Easter eggs I could’ve brought up in this that I saw/read but the video would’ve been like over 2 hours haha, and I always thought it was early 90s/late 80s the reciept says 1993 which seems a good guess, but a lot of fans are also saying don’t believe anything put in this that wasn’t originally from team silent themselves etc, so whatever works for people I guess haha
@@jb2einziger the remake was rubbish bland and genetic, Bloober failed and the original will always be better than this theft game.
@@jb2einziger remake is rubbish bland and has no real value to games industry but kills creativity and future generations if creating new stories to flourish.
Thank you for making this video. I enjoy videos of people that initially on the fence or dismiss the remake, finally play it and judge it accordingly.
Yeah I mean I was very skeptical from the start but still hopeful, but after playing the game I’m fully ready to admit I was over judgemental and I’ve really loved playing this ! It’s awesome 🙌
Keep in mind this is coming from someone whose first experience with SH2 is the remake: I think the voices in the original sound completely awful. From every character. I cannot take the characters seriously because their line delivery sounds like text-to-speech. And I understand why! It's a 2001 game - we have come so far in all aspects of game design, and if it had been my original experience with the game, certainly I would have a more nostalgic view on it.
Regarding Eddie, I think in the original, he sounds like a douchebag. In the remake, he, instead, sounds unintelligent - which I think is on purpose. It conveys the sense that his shortcomings are not his own fault, that he is a fine person, though simple-minded and subject to bullying. In the original, with his rude line delivery, he just sounds like some jerk who maybe deserved what was coming to him. I think his voice acting in the remake makes the viewer see him with a little more pity.
I was shocked to find out what Angela looked like in the original game. She looks like an adult woman - isn't she supposed to be a teenager? I think she looks phenomenal in the remake, and her line delivery is just outstanding.
I think the new cell scene with Maria is off-putting in a more... 2024 way. Instead of obviously switching between Mary/Maria cadence, she changes it all around, going monotone at times, other times really punching hard at the 'Mary' voice. It's like audible whiplash, instead of a noticeable back-and-forth pattern, which I think is confusing in a new sense.
James in the original sounds entirely robotic... He has so much life in the remake.
The hallway monologue with Mary at the end sounds like it is actually coming from the throat of a chronically ill, weak person. The shuddering and weak delivery is so realistic. In the original, she sounds completely healthy, completely fine.
Great video! I came here directly after watching your love letter video, so my intent is not to insult a game you hold dear. I am not punching down at a classic: the original SH2 is a masterpiece for a reason. I'm just giving my insight as someone who played the remake first, and witnessed the original second. I think the remake is outstanding.
Thank you for such a in depth and well written comment 👍 and of course, I understand that many many people will be experiencing this remake as their very first time in the world of SH2 and thank god it turned out as amazing as it did as I think anyone playing the remake is getting just the same or better an experience than what it felt like playing it as a kid in 2001, and of course, with the voices people are definitely going to have their preferences, I think both games show their age In the performances for example like the original it was state of the art mo cap at the time but all they had was the dialogue really, and yeah I guess you could say people who played that first can see past certain things with the VA because it’s an important part of their childhood etc, but although their voices aren’t the most professional sounding the way they’ve always explained it is that they say that they feel they sound more like everyday people rather than actors, but in the same way with todays technology graphically and fidelity wise you can have so many minute details in a characters eyes, facial expressions, the way they hold themselves etc as well as great voice acting so it really shows how far we’ve come, I think all the voices in the remake sound fantastic I think it’s because of playing the original so many times over the years I have an already pre set expectation of exactly how I think they should sound and act so anything different makes me feel strange at first but after playing the game a couple times through I think everyone does an amazing job and the new voices all really suit them, I think James and Angela are my favourites I think they sounded incredibly lifelike and believable.
And thank you so much for watching my love letter to silent hill 2 video as well 👍 I try and put as much work into these videos as I can without being the best at editing/writing and I’m really glad you enjoyed them 😁 thank you 🙏
In my first play through I would say it was a flawed remake. But I have replayed this 4 times and I honestly feel like this game is perfect now. I’m just floored by the level of attention to detail here. I absolutely adore this remake. I still prefer the nostalgia of the original but this is right there with the original
In my opinion.
Also the abstract daddy fight is my favorite set piece and fight in ANY game I’ve played. It’s so good and just terrified me everytime
That’s awesome 😁 yeah same here, any beloved game having a remake is going to have its initial doubts whilst playing through the first time as we’re so caught up in what we know to be ‘correct’ in silent hill 2 that any changes feel wrong, but like you said the more I played it the more and more I loved it, I think it’s really captures something special and is up there with the original on some levels, but like you said we’re always probably going to prefer the original for certain factors if we have strong nostalgic ties to it.
And yeah the abstract daddy was so intense ! I’m glad you don’t encounter more in the hotel like the original SH2 haha 😝 thanks for watching 🙏
I think Maria is just as believable as the rest of the cast when you consider her nature. She sounds like exactly what she's meant to be. A confident flirty succubus, basically. And her calling after Laura? Also fine. Laura didn't hear her. She did that for James, to make the illusion that she's real more believable.
The new version of the elevator sequence is vaguely threatening and unsettling. It's not happy. It's not cheery. It sits heavy like a looming threat over James's head. A sword of Damocles. It's unnerving.
Yeah that does make sense, I guess when compared to the originals I just found her the most monotone of them all I guess, but since I’ve played the game a few times I find all the new voices great, and yeah I guess as she didn’t respond on the stairs that makes sense I did actually think that a bit later after making this, thank you for watching !
Yeah I find a lot of the drama and tension in the scenes of the remake are really well handled and in some cases even darker
The facial animations are absolutely insane. If you sit down and really look at the cutscenes, tiny things like a smirk on Laura or the reality that dawns on James that he'll never find his wife when him and Maria are at the statue of the woman are so well done. James' face in particular just screams emotion, exhaustion and turmoil.
Yeah they’re extremely well done, it’s really subtle details that when you notice them make the story even more impactful, and yeah like you say James I think both facial and voice wise sounds really believable and realistic !
Thank you for taking the time to make this video !
I really enjoyed watching ❤❤
Thank you so much ! I’m glad you enjoyed it ! Thanks for watching
great vid
hope u get much more views. u deserve it
Thank you very much 😁 hope you enjoyed watching !

What if the Manifestations and Ghosts of Silent Hill are Kamis, like those of the Shinto religion?
Kamis are described as "spirits" who inhabit everything and everywhere (there is no translation for the word Kami, and they are not exactly spirits, but they have similar concepts).
The Book of Lost Memories says that Silent Hill is a place with Spiritual Power, where silent spirits live. They live everywhere (trees, animals, people, rocks, rivers, etc.) and in objects. Just as the Kamis are described in the Shinto religion.
What I mean by this is that all the Manifestations(including the Monsters)and ghosts of Silent Hill are not just creations of an individual's psyche, but are incarnate kamis (spirits).
This means that Maria could be Mary's spirit manifested, based on James' psyche(that'd explain that scene at the Jail)
The spirits of the town would then be "molded" according to an individual's unconscious.
The ghosts, on the other hand, would be spirits that have not been physically manifested
So the Spirit Power of Silent Hill is nothing more than a bunch of spirits that are molded from the psyche of those who enter it
What do you think of this theory?
Thank you for your well written explanation, very interesting, it makes sense, and like you ended it there, i do feel I’ve heard team silent reference a lot in the past that due to the spiritual power of the town, the manifestations are directly from the minds of the persons involved rather than anything from an alternative universe or time/space, they mention the town used to be a sacred place but the cults plans with alessa tainted the spiritual power to be linked with their demon god, so that when Cheryl returns to SH after being called back with a magic spell when they become one again she involuntarily projects the nightmare onto the real world, which is why a lot of the themes and things present in SH1 are linked to Cheryl’s favourite childhood stories like the wizard of Oz etc, then after it’s linked to different characters psyches like James/Eddie/Angela, Heather, Walter etc so I think I understand the cause of the nightmare itself at least as much as SH1 explains that to us, but like you say the kamis/spirits could already exist in that power from the beginning and all mix into the nightmare after it become twisted and linked to the cult, that’s the great thing about SH, it creates so much discussion and thought all these years on, thank you very much for watching, I also have a long SH2 video/discussion on the original SH2 on this channel where I speak about the game in more detail and my history with the series if you’d be interested in watching that at some point ?
Maria isnt a manifestation shes like an inbetween type thing.
Shes definitely partially a real person but that doesnt stop her from still being a means for james.
Its kinda sad really
I’ve always known her to be a manifestation created by the town for James ? That’s why she resembles Mary so much but is more sexual as it’s almost like the spiritual power of the town is trying to use her as a replacement for James (from James mind) for the ways he may have wanted Mary to be more ? I’m sure they speak about it in the making of SH2 at some point, in the born from a wish game she says when I woke up I was all alone, so it’s almost like she didn’t exist in the town before James got there ? Or am I missing something ?
I think that when I used to watch The Real Silent Hill Experience by Twin Perfect a lot, in that they usually always back up what they say with either direct quotes from the specific parties involved or evidence in the games, they say in their SH2 & SH Hd collection videos that she is a reincarnation of Mary maybe I’ve just always thought that she is a (manifestation) created by the spirit power and have had it wrong this whole time ?
@jb2einziger TRSHE by Twin Perfect literally molded my love for Silent Hill. I was always a fan but I used to sit there for hourssss watching their videos and soking up all the Silent Hill facts I didn't know
@ same here ! I still watch the real silent hill experience from beginning to end at least a couple times a year ! I wish they’d come back for a SH2 special :( but j guess it would just be Rosseter and Foodge (if that’s how it’s spelt) I know there was a big falling out with Fungo which is a shame I used to watch his twitch streams all the time and made friends with loads of his community, I used to chat with him all the time, and then he decided to take a break from streaming whilst he moved house and then he never came back :(
@@jb2einziger Sure, she is a manifestation born from James's mind by the town, but we also know (from Born From a Wish scenario) that she has her own feelings and intelligence and some form of agency at least initially. So she is not like some mindless puppet completely controlled by the powers that be in Silent Hill. She makes her own choices in the beginning, she is thinking of ending her life, she is looking for someone to talk to, she finds Ernest, talks to him, decides to help him, we see she is actually touched by his tragic story, she is curious about him, wants to know some stuff. So at the beginning of her journey, she actually acts like a normal human being, just lonely and lost and sad. So you see, she is not some sort of evil demon that she might seem by the end. I think the cruelty of her story is that she is made like a completely normal person by the town, but gradually becomes what she becomes in the end as the town takes control of her as a tool for James's (self-)punishment.
Have u noticed how the letter h looks like a chair :p
I HAVE NOW !?!? 😝
@jb2einziger and how the letter Y look like a slingshot :p
just some feedback at 1:18:50 you forgot to lower the game volume to make it so that we can hear what you’re saying
😂 thank you I didn’t even notice that, I was trying to get the levels right for ages I must’ve forgotten to turn that section down, if it helps at all, all I essentially say is the boss fight is almost identical to the original which is cool and the cage breaks open like the flesh lips boss fight etc, thank you for pointing that out 👍 hope you enjoyed watching still
Ga.e is good on its own but I still prefer original not a fan of the va work it kills some of the scenes then there is pyramid head changes again they change a scene or 2 that takes away from the original
Music still hits better in original mostly
Overall a surprise win though it's unfortunate they used that scum bag consultant
Yeah I mean even I have an undying love for the original I still play at least a couple times a year and everytime I love it just as much, that’s why I think I used scenes side by side cutscene wise to see how people think they compare, and for the most part I think some scenes are well acted and some aren’t like I say In the video, I don’t like the new Eddie, Maria/Mary’s prison scene is now all messed up etc, but like you say it’s turned out surprisingly well for the most part, I’m currently playing through it again
And yeah I think the soundtrack for most of the re recordings sound more expanded with new things happening, however certain tracks feel like a step back, I got the soundtrack with the deluxe edition but it’s not all the songs it’s only like 10 tracks, so I never heard Laura’s theme up until after the game was out and to me anyway it sounds like an amateur cover, the guitar tones used the drumming etc, it’s weird, but then other tracks like the new version of true blew me away
@@darthbane2669what do you mean about the consultant ? Not familiar with this ?
I'm waiting for my copy to come in the mail! I can't wait! I am pleasantly surprised with what I've seen, can't wait!❤
The ONLY THING I've seen that didn't hit for me, was Maria's scene in the prison cell, it just didn't quite hit the level the OG did. In the OG, she moved back and forth between her Mary and Maria voice, it was creepier, uncanny...she tried, I'll give her that, but its such an important scene and perfect it was almost impossible for her to do it justice. I don't really care for the New Marias voice acting but its a small nitpick, I'm really happy with Angela and her expanded story.❤
Exactly my thoughts, I even speak about this later in the video and compare them side by side with name stamps over when the changes are supposed to happen etc, the game is amazing atmosphere wise and the newly expanded areas and puzzles are really cool and interesting I just find myself wondering around taking every little detail in, I’m sure you’ll love playing it when it arrives 👍 thank you for watching !
@jb2einziger I'm going to finish watching your vid after I play it, I didn't want to spoil myself too much more lol, but I'm excited to come back after I play and finish!❤️
@@AFoxInFlames that’s cool, and of course it would be best to experience this remake for yourself first before I spoil everything etc 😆 hope you enjoy the game and thank you for watching once you’re done 👍
@jb2einziger I got like a quarter of the way in and I was like ahhh I'm starting to get spoiled, I'll be back. I had to order it too because all 4 gamestops by me don't have any copies so I guess that also says something about how good it is!
@@AFoxInFlames haha that’s fair enough, and yeah it’s been doing amazing sales wise, everyone’s loving it ! Including me, hope you receive your copy soon 👍
The demake os insulting. And its replacing the original.
That’s fine to feel that way about it, I myself was judging the remake hard before it came out I have videos on this channel taking the piss out of it, but now I’ve played it and watched it through a few times I feel they did a great job recapturing the feel and atmosphere and for the most part re recording the voices for the characters, I’m not a huge fan of Eddie and Maria but I think James and angela come across quite well, but I know the remake isn’t going to be for everyone, I’ll still be playing the original all the time, this for now though was quite a surprise to me
@jb2einziger 🙄
@@based-ys9um your entitled to your opinion wether you like it or dislike it, I’m
Not here to tell people how they should feel about the remake, in the video I make arguments both for and against, it’s just how I feel about the game personally 👍
They succeeded with much of the scenery and atmosphere, and made several boss fights a lot more interesting. They did however BUTCHER the character of Angela with that troony self insert plump face, and the out-of-place drunk-raspy corny voice of hers. At times she sounds like she's smoked so many cigarettes it's not even funny. COMPLETELY ruined several of my old favorite scenes with that abomination of a remade character.
Yeah I agree with you they made a lot of the scenery and atmosphere very well, I think most voices in the game and character models look ok, I know a lot of people don’t like the new Angela even I complained about her a lot in my previous videos when she was revealed but after playing I think she sounds fine for the most part but the worst offenders I think are both the way Eddie looks and sounds, and Maria sounds like she can’t be bothered a lot of the time, it’s just very flat and stiff, but I hope you enjoyed the game apart from those things ? Thank you for watching 👍😁
@jb2einziger I think Maria's voice is on purpose but Eddie does sound weird sometimes
Well I'm sorry she's not pretty enough for you 🙄
Ya they went too far with making Eddie really gross he was over weight but it was his eyes that revealed a lot
They got some things great but what they did with others isn't as good
"troony self insert plump face, and the out-of-place drunk-raspy corny voice of hers" is vile, hateful critique. In the original, she was supposed to be a young woman, but she looked / sounded like an adult. In this game, they really make her look / sound like a young woman who has been through intense trauma. I cannot understate how phenomenal of a job they did modeling her and voice acting her in this remake. I cannot for the life of me figure out why people are so bothered. She looks like a real human being now.
