    Remember before the internet? When you'd be in the theater watching previews when you found out they were making a new Batman movie by seeing the trailer? That used to be exciting as hell.

      yup good ole days. one thing am bother about movies nowadays is the damn commercials in theaters now. come on i didn't pay to see commercials which i can see for free on T.V. i pay to see a trailer & a movie. commercial is the only thing that bothers me about theaters IDK maybe it's just me. lol.

      Agreed WeWacthedAMovie!! Even if that movie is just a guilty pleasure today, when I was like 10, I saw the POSTER of Mortal Kombat the movie that was about to come out...one of the biggest OMFG moment of my life lol Because there's was no internet, no trailers(except on tv) that you could see. I remember waiting in line in the theater with my friend to pay for the movie we were aboout to see...and we saw the poster...and that was it for us! We wanted so bad to see the movie as soon it would come out! Today's expectations are so freaking high because of a trailer that(more often than never) misguides you or tell you so much that you don't have any more imagination left...it's sad really. That's why I loved the trailer of Looper(for example) actually...because it told the basics of the movie for sure...but they left on purpose a big part of that movie which was more important to give you a : Wait...what?? Holy crap!! That's even more awesome! lolll

    Why the fuck can't Hollywood just do TEASERS? No trailers that spoil anything. Every trailer should be VERY short and not contain ANY spoilers.

    • @fatsamcastle
      @fatsamcastle 8 років тому +7

      blakeesmith84 because teasers don't give you a idea of what sort of film, what genre it is.

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 8 років тому +31

      Oh please, you can very easily cut a teaser in such a way that you instantly know action, comedy, sci-fi, horror, or drama. And that is all you need to know. If it looks cool you go see it if not you don't.
      I have quite literally stopped watching trailers at this point and I enjoy my movies vastly more. Nothing is spoiled and everything is fresh and exciting. Helps that I don't have regular TV anymore so I don't see endless TV spots too. Just watch a teaser decide if it is interesting, wait for a few people to see it and hear what they think. If I am still intrigued I go see it. If not I wait for it to drop on Netflix or rent the DVD. Absolutely nothing better than waiting especially on something like Batman v Superman. Still haven't seen the theatrical cut only the extended cut. So I walked away feeling like it was decent.

      I can recall quite a few movies that had short trailers that you still knew what genre and what enemies are in it. For Spiderman 2 (original Doc Oc) they could've shown some shots with Peter and Mary Jane having fun, then moved to a scene with Oc attaching the suit to himself, end trailer

    • @lydiarand4786
      @lydiarand4786 8 років тому

      blakeesmith84 what's the difference between a trailer and a teaser? And why would teasers be better?

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 8 років тому +1

      Teasers are typically about 30 seconds and show little more than a title and some minor but iconic scene of a major character. Trailers are about 2 minutes long and show most of the major action sequences and often some of the best jokes from the movie. To the point where after about the 3rd trailer you have watched almost the entire movie and have certain expectations of what you will see.
      A teaser really gives you nothing more than this is an action film about this. And that should be enough if it is a good movie.

  • @InkHeart17

    I love the way Alfred Hitchcock did the trailers for Psycho and The Birds. It's just him talking to the audience about the premise of the film while not actually telling us anything. He makes it sound intriguing, like the movies hold a big secret that he's almost telling us. Then he ends the trailers with a 5 second clip of the movie followed by a title card. Masterful!

    Batman Begins trailer- mostly a Christian Bale voice-over in which we see his bearded face somewhere in Asia, and don't even realize this is a Batman movie until we see incredibly brief flashes of Batman at the very end, followed by the title. Hyped.
    Batman v. Superman trailer- HEY GUYS LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT THIS MOVIE BATMAN DOESN'T LIKE SUPERMAN BECAUSE HE EXPLODED HIS BUILDING SO BATMAN DECIDES TO FIGHT HIM BUT REALLY LEX LUTHOR IS BEHIND IT ALL AND THEN WONDER WOMAN SHOWS UP AND BATMAN AND SUPERMAN BECOME FRIENDS BUT ALSO DOOMSDAY IS THE THIRD ACT AND THE SUBTITLE IS "DAWN OF JUSTICE" BECAUSE THE NEXT ONE AFTER THIS IS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE ONE. 10 Cloverfield Lane had a perfect trailer. It gives you some idea about the movie, like that it takes place in an underground bunker. Mary Elizabeth Winstead seems to be held captive, etc. but, beyond that, you know nothing. The trailer makes you want to know more about the movie, know how MEW got there, how John Goodman fits into everything, what's with MEW attacking John Goodman.

    • @theren8311
      @theren8311 8 років тому +24

      Preston Davis It would have made no difference. The only persons that would have benefited from that reveal would have been those who went to see it on day 1. Because minutes after the movie it would have been all over the internet how Spiderman is now in the MCU. It's not like olden days. Pretty much everyone has access to the net, and wouldn't be able to avoid such an announcement. And the fact that you wait for the movie to make a reveal so it can be spread by word of mouth due to hype, would still be the same as just revealing it from the get go.

      sanjay pallur I hate trailers that show scenes that aren't in the movie almost as much as trailers that spoil. The trailer is supposed to interest the audience by showing how the movie's going to be generally. When there are there scenes from the trailer that aren't in the movie, the people are lying about what's going to be in the movie, which is just as annoying as them lying about the genre of the movie. The example Chris used about Rhino vs Spidey is good for this, because it's Sony tricking the audience into thinking that there's going to be a cool fight, but there isn't one. Either way they're lying and tricking the audience about the content of a movie. Whether it's the amount of content or type of content, it's annoying for them to lie about it.

    As much as I love Marvel Studios, I don't like certain aspects of their marketing. For example, with Avengers they show the Hulk catching Iron Man at the end. And in Thor: The Dark World they show the scene where Thor takes out the rock creature.
    Those aren't exactly major spoilers, but they're moments that would have been amazing to have seen for the very first time DURING the movie.
    That said, I loved the marketing for Iron Man 3, where the first trailer wasn't "Iron Man kicks ass!", it was "Iron Man gets his ass kicked. How is he going to fight back?". That was a great marketing approach.

      I dont think that the hulk catching iron man and the thor bashing the rock thing were spoilers at all. it is expected that death in the marvel universe isnt taken seriously. Also, thor bashing that rock thing was also not a big WOW OMG moment or even a spoiler that takes away from the movie. It seems that it was just comic relief. Perfect spoiler examples are stuff like Gwen stacy final moment in tasm 2 trailers. But in any case, its all subjective i get it.

      Yes Trilbee, but think about a certain point Chris brought up, "lines and scenes in the trailer that aren't in the movie". With Iron Man 3, almost every single line the Manderin says in the trailer isn't in the movie, "I'm gonna offer a choice, do you want an empty life, or a meaningful death", basically with the movie, the studio lied to us (Disclaimer: I love Marvel Studios and their movies, I just have a strong hatred for the Manderin in Iron Man 3). Really think about this, Iron Man 3 is the only movie I've seen, that flat out lies, by using the trailer and people expectations, to enhance a twist, that wasn't very good to begin with.

    One trailer I despise from misleading information is Avengers: Age of Ultron. At the end, it shows a bunch of ruins with Captain America's shield being broken in half, and then Ultron towering over the camera like he's made his victory. When I first saw the trailer I was like "Oh no! Is something happening to Captain America? Is he gonna die?!"
    But no. It was a freaking dream sequence *near the beginning of the movie*. I was so disappointed in seeing that scene that it almost completely killed the movie for me.

    Another problem with movie trailers is that they ALL HAVE THE SAME CLICHÉS! The top 3 worst clichés are:
    1. The constant fade to black between every cut.
    2. The overwhelming amount of drums and booms.
    3. Everything, no matter what kind of movie it is, comes off as extremely dramatic and serious. I'm talking action comedies here as well, like The Avengers and Escape Plan, all act like they're The Dark Knight or something when in reality they're just humorous popcorn films. I have yet to see a trailer for a big-budget Hollywood movie that doesn't do this.

The teaser trailer from December got me so pumped up with the way the HALO jump segment was put together and then having it conclude with Godzilla's silhouette in a big debris cloud followed by that HUGE roar, it was fantastic! Then the main trailer came out and STILL managed to keep mystery even though it featured more character dialogue, footage and even a brief look at Godzilla. I hate trailers. I'll usually watch the first trailer or teasers, but NEVER post release trailers. They're the worst. The trailer for Ouija Origin of Evil had literally EVERY scare, with the exception of maybe 2 small ones. Trailer studios have to STOP cutting horror trailers like action trailers. It's fine to show a bunch of explosions and car chases and action beats in a trailer, cause not much is given away. But with horror, when you show every death/scare, you're taking away a key part of the movie.
    Trailers... blech.

    You mentioned Castaway but... I can't remember anyone at the time getting upset about the reveal. People still enjoyed it. I guess some people were more interested in what he did to survive not if he survived. And probably anticipated there would be more to the story than just that.

    I honestly have to give props to the Russo Bro's etc. for the way their trailer was shot for the 'Civil War' movie. Most of the scenes that were in the trailer were in the actual movie, but the best part is the scenes in the trailer were shot from a different angle. So when you actually saw the movie you recognised some scenes but they were completely different because they were from a different angle to what you saw in the trailer. I find it quite refreshing and caring that they took that into consideration.

THAT WAS TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME. wouldn't you feel kinda let down if they showed that scene in the trailer before you get to watch it? I mean, when you watch the film, it was totally totally one of the best scene in the movie. I watched it and everyone in the theater went ape shit, including me. It would have totally spoiled such a scene if it was in the trailer.

      Marty Blois The Hulkbuster isn't even the biggest thing they spoil in the trailers. By now you can pretty much guess most of the major plot points of the movie by watching the trailers. It's kinda ridiculous. And people are whining about the batman v superman trailer "because it doesn't show enough about the story". (I'm not trying to start another marvel vs DC fanboy flame war, I'll still watch age of ultron and probably still love it, but the trailers have shown far too much.)

    It’s the trailers that pre-date 2003 that I hate the most.
    It’s because if they’re 80s or 90s movies, the trailer almost always has the cheesy narrator, and they’re always 4 minutes long and spoil everything.
    As for most of the trailers pre-80s, half of them don’t even exist - so they just take out scenes that give no context.

      +GnarlyTooth I did the same. After I saw the teaser I was satisfied already, so I had to mute and switch channels a lot when the 1st and 2nd trailer came out and ran on TV all the time during breaks and on the news and all the stuff and talking on the internet of course. It was a hard time, mentally and technically hehe. But man, I was so glad I was able to go through that time without "picking up" anything about Episode VII and experienced the movie in cinema completely open minded and fresh (and was blown away).
      THEN I went on research, collecting all kind of info, watching UA-cam videos up and down, downloading wallpapers AND WATCHED THE 2ND TRAILER FOR ABOUT 50 TIMES since then :) Can't await the BluRay!

    It's getting worse now, but it isn't really anything new. Most Hollywood trailers have always given away a shit ton of plot and misleading tone to get people in seats. I mean a lot of trailers in the 70s were over 3 minutes long and consisted of a narrator basically outlining the plot, particularly for horror films. There were always exceptions, like the trailer for Alien, or any Kubrick film, just like there are exceptions today. But yes, definitely a big big problem, especially now with online ads and TV spots running rampant.

    • @Sizeet
      @Sizeet 10 років тому +1

      What you stated about "a lot of trailers in the 70s were over 3 minutes long and consisted of a narrator basically outlining the plot, particularly for horror films" rings especially true for the film "Carrie." • @riotangel914
      @riotangel914 10 років тому +1

      I agree with you, Jordan. Watching the special features on DVD/Blu-Ray, I'm floored by how much is revealed in so many trailers that I've made a point of never watching them before the movie. "The Last Starfighter (1984)" popped in my head as I read "over 3 minutes long and consisted of a narrator basically outlining the plot." I was stunned that the entire movie is laid out so nonchalantly in the trailer.
      I also agree with Chris about the irritating use of scenes shot specifically for the trailer and also changing the tone of the trailer to fill seats. "The Invisible (2007)" looked like some kind of supernatural mystery, but the actual movie was anything but. At one point in the trailer, the protagonist meets an elderly spirit at the hospital who gives our hero "the rules" of being between worlds and tells him to find his body before it's too late. This whole scene in the trailer doesn't appear anywhere in the final film. It was a real let down.

      What's interesting is that the trailer is probably more subject to the other complaint: that it mis-characterized the movie. From the clip shown, one might have thought that it would be more a movie about dealing with life after the island than events on the island.

    I think my favorite trailer I ever saw of a movie that sticks out in my mind is the one for the first Pirates of the Caribbean film where all it was was the camera panning around an island with the names of the actors who were attached to the film. I left the theater really intrigued by it and was like this can mean only one of two things it's either going to be really good, or its going to be really bad. But I really enjoyed not knowing anything about the characters when I went and saw the movie and but ended up being one now my favorite movies of that year. To me I wish more trailers were like that. Quite personally I don't like being all hyped up by a trailer only to be let down later after I go and see a movie I had been dying to see for months.

    Anyone else notice that in Cast Away’s trailer it’s clearly playing the main theme from Braveheart. Just saying check it out

    Im sorry to say this and I probably might get a lot of negative comments but I think Spider Man played by Tobey Maguire is so much better than the Amazing Spider Man. Like Seriously.

      KgDrifty™ Somebody said it before (dont remember the video) but the thing about Sam Raimi's Spiderman (1 and 2) for me was this, i liked the guy because he WANTED to be a hero. He's still a bit dumb, shy, he gets bullied but when he's not Peter Parker he's really an awesome superhero. Peter Parker doesnt need to be clever all the time, he would look too smug. But when he's Spiderman he can be witty and funny and resourceful. That's why Raimi's Spiderman has a more power-fantasy-comic-feel-like- when we see Peter become a superhero...that was totally ruined with Spiderman 3.
      excuse my english.

    yes, guardians of the galaxy is a brilliant example of a good trailer. I was entertained and it spoiled nothing for me. i agree with you, I avoid most of the movie trailers now because they basically summarize the movies and give away moments of the movies you can put it together.

    I really love watching the old movie trailers, where it has a voice over that tells you the basic plot of the movie.
    I hate when trailers go so quick when you have literally no idea what is going on. Almost as much as trailers having spoilers.

      It wasn't the twist that ruined it. The tv spots kept showing Gwen Stacy's fall in the clock tower after being snatched / kidnapped by the Goblin. This lead me to believe she was gonna get killed off. That was what ruined it. Watching such trailers are like watching promos to harrowing tv show episodes with cliffhangers indicating a character's possible tragic fate. The following two factors in the tv spot(s) contributed.
      1) Norman Osborne (Chris Cooper)'s voice mentioning that "not everybody has a happy ending!" as we see Gwen fall (The shot is unimaginably harrowing and heartbreaking to the viewer(s); her beautiful eyes are vacant with fear, blonde hair and coat ruffling in slow motion along with the falling debris, etc..).
      2) A brief shot of Peter Parker / Spiderman screaming / crying in anguish in the tower in one tv spot (it lead me to believe he was crying over Gwen's lifeless body because he's too late to save her after a battle with Harry Osborne / Green Goblin).
      All this was cause enough for me to cancel going out with a group of my guy friends to the movies the following week.
