Hello everyone! This video is suddenly getting loads of views (it is quite old now) I neglected to mention hooded eyes in this video. This more than likely will not work for hooded eyes. I am working on a hooded eye tutorial for you all! 🖤
Holy crap. I am almost 53 and have been wearing makeup since I was 15 (I am from Texas and I think we are born with a mascara wand in one hand and a bottle of hairspray in the other). I’ve watched hours of UA-cam videos to try and figure out why my eyeshadow never looks good. I’ve purchased thousands of dollars worth of brushes (and eyeshadow) but never could make it work right like the videos. I don’t know how I stumbled across your video today but I did. And let me tell you it has been life-changing. I seriously almost cried. I’ve always done my eyeshadow exactly as you did on “the wrong side”. I cannot believe how simple you made it for me. I do have extremely deep set eyes, but was able to do this technique easily. It doesn’t look as good as yours but it’s good enough. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

Hello! I have hooded eyes + a lazy eye :/ I just started my channel so you are welcome to see how I do my eyeshadow. Honestly patience, blending, and practice are key ✨
Great point! People do start blending from the ceiling and before you know it you have to shave your brows and go up onto you’re forehead. So smart and easy on the eye. Subbed.
As an almost 40 year old who is just now experimenting with makeup, I appreciate your videos so much. I fell into the UA-cam/Instagram trap of "this is how I should apply my makeup", and it never felt right to me! I can't wait to try my eyeshadow following this technique. Thank you!!
I am in my 50’s I’ve learned more from you and your brother in the last few weeks then all the years of trial & error . And had fun watching because you make it fun instead of making me feel like bad about myself. I love your positivity. Some UA-cam ppl don’t make me feel like they are having fun teaching . @@tmdsb2655 "Tingtingasmr" is Asian and she looks gorgeous with monolids you should have a look at her channel to see her make up looks 😍 very inspiring.
Kelly D. Mono lids and hooded eyes differ in that monolids are beautiful and do not change drastically with age or a RTA like mine I never understand why Asians want to have same eyes as us but then we always want what we haven’t got I guess
Sir, this video changed EVERYTHING for me. For so long I’ve been wondering what the hell I’ve been doing wrong and why I couldn’t do a good smokey eye and it was because I was putting the color in the wrong dang areas. I’ve avoided the more daring and pigmented colors in palettes for years and your video has got me trying out all sorts of looks with them for the first time ever. Thank you so much!
I just did it earlier today. I'm 51 and figured I'd try wearing makeup again after about 4 years of not wearing it. Oh well. I'll try the right technique tomorrow! 😂
Bless you for using being colors so it's noticeable while teaching. I never noticed I put it into the top then swipe back and forth, then wondered why it wasn't packing color into my outer corner. Very easy to follow. Bf and I have a date tonight, I appreciate you!
I wish someone had made this video years ago when I was first learning makeup! Proper blending is one of the most useful things to learn for eyeshadow!💜
Heavy Metal Makeup I know that everyone hates Jaclyn Hill now but I swear she was the best at teaching blending on UA-cam in those early days before she changed. If you watch her videos from like 2010 or 2011, you will be amazed. Or you can just watch this video which is really good too 😂 it’s nice to have a new person teaching the basics.
I have watched tons of videos who claimed to teach me how to apply eyeshadow and every time I'd just learn nothing. THIS is the first in years that has finally taught me what NOT to do, explaining step by step the mistake. KUDOS ❤
Thank you for being so kind, respectful, and thorough. You are a great teacher! 🤗 I tried to recreate looks and create some of my own the other day but could not figure out why they looked weird. Now I know the right way.
I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on various looks for hooded eyes or slightly hooded eyes? When I do a smokey eye or a halo eye I just find Im lacking in some areas to make it work for my eyes. I follow some people that have hooded eyes and then when I try to repeat what they do i just feel like I'm missing something. I feel like you'd be able explain/show things very well
@@khopps7420 I feel you! There is one hooded eye eyeliner trick (you probably know about it) that made my eyeliner look so much better. The one where you look straight ahead and draw your wing (and then fill it in while closing your eye) instead of closing your eye right away to draw the wing like most people do. Hopefully I explained it correctly :P
Makes soooo much sense. I'm so glad someone actually breaks it down. A lot of influencers/UA-camrs don't explain the technicalities of anything. So when you go to do a look it looks wayyy off. We need more videos showing not only the correct tools but also the correct placement as well. So thank you for this... I know this video is old... But to date I haven't found another video as helpful as this one. So it is much appreciated. 💕
Thank you for explaining how the placements of the shadow can make a difference in how it looks. I have seen so many make up eyeshadow tutorials. And i would always feel like i was missing something. This video provided the answer i needed as to what i was doing wrong when it came to my blending.
I’m new to wearing makeup, and I realized from this video tutorial that I’ve been doing it all wrong. It makes me feel embarrassed about myself and not looking professional like Robert. Thank you for showing me how it’s done right!
Don't worry, we all made makeup mistakes in the beginning! Every single one of us. When you're more confident in your ability you'll enjoy the application and experimentation SO much more! 💋✌🏻
Thank you, thank you! At 63 years old, I've watched many, many eye shadow tutorials from some very talented people. I always come away overwhelmed and frustrated. Don't ask me why, but upon watching this video, I am well on my way to applying my shadow and actually looking darn good! (Don't worry, I will keep it simple.) I actually look forward to putting on my shadow nowadays, and I can't wait to get more practice. You are a Godsend, I can't thank you enough.
Out of all the makeup tutorials I've watched this is by far the best explanation of how to apply, blend and create a smoky eye. I tried the technique on myself but I think I don't have the right brush or just need to keep practicing with one of my blending brushes.
OMG I have just found this video all these years later and I'm sooooo grateful. This tutorial is the most useful thing I have ever seen from any MUA on youtube. I'm about to go and watch all your others. Please don't ever stop making these helpful tutorials.
thank you for sharing this. you have TRANSFORMED the way i apply my eyeshadow. i used to the "wrong" way and the results would always make me shy away from wearing eyeshadows reguraly. learning this new and much simpler technique i wear eyeshadows all. the. time. i have monolids and this technique really does wonders for myself. thank you!
I remember watching a featurette on the Princess Diaries 2 DVD that taught Anne Hathaway's double how to do her hair and makeup like Princess Mia, and the windshield wiper technique was one the makeup artist used and I have been using it since. Best tip I have ever used.
I just recently found your videos, and, just, wow! This is what I’m missing in Makeup Tutorial Videos! Someone that’s actually teaching me something! I’ve been trying to master the smoky eye for years, and you just solved it for me in 5 minutes. Thank you.
Hi! i'm from indonesia, and also i have a very "manly job" (according here in indonesia), i'm an site contructor engineer. Woman with make up is frowned upon here unfortunately :( But still i love to prepare 10-15 minutes, everyday before work to do make up, and eye shadow is absolutely my favorite thing to put on, so this and your other video about office make up is really helpful for me to enchance my "eyeshadow game". I get to show that i'm doing make up everyday because i love myself and i want to look good for me (not for others). Thank you for always encouraging us about how make up supposed to enchance what we have, not to covering it all ! Subscribed
Your English was perfect. I'm sorry women in your position and women in makeup is frowned upon there. I hope there are times it is appropriate for you to be able to do more bold looks. I just wanted to comment to say how freaking amazing I think it is to see women moving into jobs that have historically been mostly for men. I dont know you but I am super proud of you. I hope you're the best at what you do and put everyone to shame. Best of luck 💖
Thank you for a simple straight forward mini education!! Also thank you for not banging on for ages and saying irritating ‘influencer’ lines like “babes” and “obsessed”. I love this simple piece of knowledge it will change my whole eyeshadow game
With the incredible makeup education he’s giving us he could go “okay babes, I'm like so obsessed with this eyeshadow tech where you put the product in the crease, like omg, go off and girlboss sis” and I'd still listen lmao
This is a perfect beginner makeup tip. One of the most effective teaching methods is a comparison between the right way and common mistakes. I was over there in 2012 learning this the hard way.
Would really love to see a "how to" tutorial on applying eye makeup on heavy hooded eyes, I'm 52 so gravity is winning now 😅 loving your tutes Robert xxx
This makes so much sense! I'm a very visual learner, so this is going to help me greatly! I love makeup, but a lot of videos confuse me (ADHD) and thus I get frustrated at times. I usually just 'go for it' until something looks decent, yet I've been wanting to learn better techniques. Thank you so much!
I just wanted to tell you that I watch a lot of your videos and I learn something new each time. I appreciate your teaching us what to and not to do and simply demonstrating how to actually properly apply our makeup. So, I just wanted to tell you thank you, you are greatly appreciated. 🥰
"Sorry about my super messy brows"... Dear beauty influencer, your brows look natural, what makes them beautiful to me. Not really in to those sculpted, cubistic brows what are making faces look unnatural and stiffy. Altough when drawing, usually is recommended to "keep it natural". 🤣
There's this annoying trend where people add way too much makeup and overgroom their brows. To me it often looks like someone drew them on with a dark brown sharpie. He's got so much character and uniqueness. If I looked like that, I would make the scar go with my makeup. :3
Thank God I came across your channel and saw this!! I've been doing my eye makeup the wrong way since 2 years. I just saw this video, went along with my makeup brushes and now I'm feeling really glad with how it came out to be!!!
I Absolutely LOVE Robert's videos! He articulates all of his points so well without being boring or drawn-out! So personable with just the right amount of snark, which I love!
I know this video is old, but I'm so so glad I came across it and YOU! I've asked many influencers how to achieve the outer corner smokiness and noone has ever replied, let alone create a tutorial. THANK YOU!!
I’m 51 and just started wearing eyeshadow and am having this exact problem. Thank you so much for these tips. I hope it works for me because you make it look too easy
Wow! Well, I’ve been doing exactly what you did on the wrong eye, all my life! Lol I see exactly how right you are and it makes perfect sense to me now! Now that I’m 58 yrs old, it’s makes a very big difference in how you apply your eye shadow. You are really good. Thanks 😊
Looks like you have a lot of “ladies” on your channel now dear vs the typical 20, 30, 40 UA-camr girl!! I only wish 40 was the new 50!!! What you will find with women our age is that we know who we are now, we own it and if we’re living our best life, we’re out to lift others not knock them down. There’s always going to be an exception here and there. Sadly some never grow out of their own insecurities. We just want to be pretty too without so much fuss. I’ve had “my day” and I enjoy seeing all of the beautiful young women grow, reach their goals, and live their best lives. I enjoy being a role model and paying it forward when I can. You and a few other channels provide content we can appreciate. You are a breath of fresh air as it seems you’ve worked with many models and you understand we all DONT NEED to bake on powder, contour and highlight our battle scars. Keep the great videos coming. Love your channel.
I just turned 30 and have been having a very difficult time coming to terms with it, but I’m starting to embrace it and realize that age is just a number and I’m starting to love myself and find myself. This comment literally brought me to tears. And I agree.. this channel is a breath of fresh air, very informative and interesting, fun.... all the things I want and need in a UA-cam channel. I’m so glad I found you and I’m binge-watching all your videos on this lazy Sunday afternoon ☺️🤗
Toni Douglas it’s funny because I am 37, about to be 38 in like 1.5 weeks, and let me tell ya I had a WAYYY harder time approaching/turning 30 than I’m having approaching 40! 30 is a big one! Toni I assure you it’ll get easier! I relate so much to what you said. I find myself feeling far more comfortable in my own skin as I get older and I’m grateful for that! I don’t feel the need to do a full face just to go get apples, I can toss on my shoes and pay no mind to what my face looks like. Of course I like to do my makeup, but it’s because I WANT to not because I feel I HAVE to. I also pay far more attention to skincare over the latest and greatest makeup products too. I always heard “good skin creates good makeup “ but now I truly understand what that means. Take care!💕
Mariah Martinez I completely agree! I really struggled with turning 30 but 40 was a piece of cake. I’m almost 48 now and have mixed feelings about 50 but still not as bad as looking at 30 was. Looking back, I loved being in my 30s. I feel like that’s when I really learned who I was and what I wanted from life. There is a confidence that comes from growing older and discovering that it isn’t all down hill after an arbitrary age.
Sir Robert, I've watched this video so many times. I just love it. Your instruction is so clear and easy to understand. You are the best thing that has happened in the "makeup" world".
I've apparently been doing my eyeshadow the right way this whole time. I had girl I know that was a cosmetology student comment on my pictures saying I'm always doing my eyeshadow wrong and it looks stupid and that I should listen to her because she's in school for it and she tried to tell me to do what is now considered the wrong way. I'm so glad I didn't listen to her.
I wear makeup all the time but sometimes when putting foundation on some times it looks dark after I blend it in really good even when I put on blush after that And some times it looks amazing not Shure what im doing wrong
Wow this literally is a game changer for me. I really had no idea what I was doing wrong and this broke it down into tangible steps for me that went so behind most vague tutorials. Thank you so much.
This SERIOUSLY helped me... wow what a difference. I have been doing my makeup for years, and this technique fixed what I hated about eyeshadow. The clown look! I get it now. Thank you!
Me: a good smokey eye would look good with my look today. I'll try again. Makeup Gawds: watch this video first cuz GURL! 😂😂excellent video eventhough its a little old. I love that your focusing on technique, not brand or colors, technique. I tell ppl all the time that color theory and technique are much more important that brand products. You can have the most expensive products offered but if you dont have the technique, you'll look a hot mess! New sub just for that reason. 👏🏾
OMG I cant believe this!!! I've been struggling with eyes and I think they are the best part of makeup and I've actually even getting discouraged and thought about you know quitting makeup I'm going to give this video is shot because I really explained it in a way that I understand thank you so much robert
Thank you, Robert! I have good days and not so good days with eyeshadow - almost like having a good hair day and a bad hair day! So, I wasn't entirely aware of what I was doing right when I WAS getting it right and what I was doing horribly wrong that just led me to removing all eye product and starting over with just a single color and leaving it at that. This makes total sense. Thanks for sharing this tip!
Wow - just tried this and my eyes turned out amazing!!!!! The colors are so soft and blended and professional looking!!! I had no idea that I should be using the blending brush in the way you demonstrated. SMH!! Thank you!
For years I was doing it just like you were showing and I started watching all these damn videos and realized I sucked so I haven’t wore makeup since and that was 3 years ago. I’m still clueless but after this video I feel like everything is looking up!!!! Thank you I love how you explained everything.
Robert, I have what I thought I created a smoky eye everyday for 40 years. I have never gotten compliments on my eyes. I did your technique and I have already had two compliments (I can't believe anybody noticed, but they did). One thought somebody else did my eyes and one said they liked the new eye shadow I was wearing. It is neither. It's the same makeup and I did it myself, but the way you showed me. Thank you, thank you. Finally, I have gotten it right. It only took me 42 years. Where have you been Robert. I sincerely thank you.
I am 59, and I freaking love make up, have loved it all my life. I have never been able to do a smokey eye until I watched this video, I tried it today, and nailed it!!! You made my day!!!
Do you even know how much I love you right now. I was always so good with my eyeshadow until I started watching youtubers. Watching them made me feel like I had been doing it wrong the whole time. When I started going by what they did I would end up looking like a clown to say it nicely... Thank you for saving us all from UA-cam and Instagram brainwashing.

I've been watching a few of your videos, mainly because I thing you're entertaining as hel! But also because the advice you give makes soooooo much sense. I had a go at a smokey eye look using this method and it WORKs!!! I have never been able to achieve it before and my eyeliner is usually always wonky. Your tips have been brilliant. I felt that, but at least I'm learning now!
Y’all be complaining about hooded eyes
*laughs in Asian monolids*
I'd rather have monolids 😢
My youngest sister has monolids. She begged me to do her makeup and that was one of the hardest makeup looks I've done.
Kelly D. Nahhhh when I open my eyes, all that makeup just disappears into a deep hole. Not fun.
@@tmdsb2655 "Tingtingasmr" is Asian and she looks gorgeous with monolids you should have a look at her channel to see her make up looks 😍 very inspiring.
Kelly D. Mono lids and hooded eyes differ in that monolids are beautiful and do not change drastically with age or a RTA like mine
I never understand why Asians want to have same eyes as us but then we always want what we haven’t got I guess
Looooove having a legit makeup artist giving people tips rather than just makeup enthusiasts.
How do you think they become professionals??? By being make up enthusiates🙃
That’s amazing thank you so much!!! 🖤🖤
Same!! You are giving this newly minutes 50 year old makeup addict COURAGE! And my husband loves my new, colorful eye looks...BONUS!
Newly minted! LOL. Anyway, you've made me into a bold old broad!
@@colleenregan9130 I turned 50 last week too!!!
me who just threw glitter on my eyelids and eyeliner and called it a day :0
The fact that I just did the “bad eye” on myself yesterday 😂😂 I’m glad I watched this now I’ll do it differently
Same girl same 😭😭
I just did it earlier today.
Bf and I have a date tonight, I appreciate you!
ebonystripes thank you so much!! I hope you had a great night!! 🖤🖤
Robert Welsh yesss they got engaged that night!
This is The most *THOROUGH* "Do's and Don'ts" Eyeshadow tutorial I've ever seen on UA-cam. Thank You for this🙏
I wish someone had made this video years ago when I was first learning makeup!
Now I know the right way.
what a hidden gem you are on youtube
Thank you so much! 🖤
I was just thinking the same thing!
I feel like you'd be able explain/show things very well
Laura K that’s a great idea! I have very slightly hooded eyes so I can share some of my tips!! Xx
@@RobertWelsh yes, please do it would be greatly appreciated!
I live the hooded eye struggle too. No matter how I blend and where I put it, my eye socket just sucks in all the color lol
Omg the wrong side was literally me.
It's still me 🤦🏾♀️
Makes soooo much sense. 💕
Umm, I feel like this was directed at me. 😂 this is exactly how I start doing my eyeshadow... now I know why I don’t like my looks afterwards 👀
Can we get a Robert Welsh x Wayne Goss collab some time? 😁🙏
Soph Gm yess
They're my 2 favorites
Oh my gosh! I am new to the make up work and I absolutely love them both!
That would be amazing!!!!
Wayne Goss has never done a makeup. He just talks.
After doing my make up like your wrong side for years and trying to make myself better , I can finally say. This video has enlightened my life😂🌺🌸
Never realized why my smokey eyes wouldn’t come out how I wanted them to lol. Great tutorial! 💕
Woman with make up is frowned upon here unfortunately :(
But still i love to prepare 10-15 minutes, everyday before work to do make up, and eye shadow is absolutely my favorite thing to put on, so this and your other video about office make up is really helpful for me to enchance my "eyeshadow game". I get to show that i'm doing make up everyday because i love myself and i want to look good for me (not for others).
Thank you for always encouraging us about how make up supposed to enchance what we have, not to covering it all !

Suka liat video" tutorial make-up ya kak...
I am absolutely obsessed with all of Robert’s facial expressions. I am always smiling while watching his videos.
You’re doing good things for the world by doing these videos
Thank you for being so articulate and demonstrating. This is SOOOO helpful.
"Sorry about my super messy brows"... Dear beauty influencer, your brows look natural, what makes them beautiful to me. Not really in to those sculpted, cubistic brows what are making faces look unnatural and stiffy. Altough when drawing, usually is recommended to "keep it natural". 🤣
Thank you so much! There’s something about reading people’s comments on your videos that makes you feel like you have to apologise for everything 😂😂
@@RobertWelsh F&*k em! 😝😘😘😘
What eyebrow makeup works best on scars? I have issue getting anything to cover my scar.
There's this annoying trend where people add way too much makeup and overgroom their brows. To me it often looks like someone drew them on with a dark brown sharpie. He's got so much character and uniqueness. If I looked like that, I would make the scar go with my makeup. :3
torille! ok ill go home
THANK YOU!!
Well ... that explains why I never feel the need to do a cut crease - I somehow manage to keep most of the shadow off of my lid. Sweet.
I’m 51 and just started wearing eyeshadow and am having this exact problem. Thank you so much for these tips. I hope it works for me because you make it look too easy
I have been watching makeup videos since they’ve been around and I have never watched someone that explain this as well as you! Thank you sm angel! 💘
Probably the best eyeshadow tutorial I've ever seen. Especially the tip of getting into the socket and the flat brush. What a difference.
This comment was beautiful to read thank you so so much! 🖤🖤🖤
Take care!💕
I’m 41 and agree with you!
I sincerely love how informative your videos are. You make content that us everyday makeup users need and want to see! So I thank you for that 😘
I just LOVED how you explained this. “The Smokey effect doesn’t come from the colour but from the blending”
Me too
This is the best tutorial ever. You explain and show the technique so well. Many videos miss the mark of what you are teaching.
I love doing makeup but I have hooded eyes and all my work juts get hidden when I open them. Can you do a video of trips and tricks for my eyes?
What a great video my darling i am sure you helped out a lot of people! much love to you darling ♥️
yo! Sugar Love replied. I love ur makeups
I wear makeup all the time but sometimes when putting foundation on some times it looks dark after I blend it in really good even when I put on blush after that
And some times it looks amazing not Shure what im doing wrong
Wow this literally is a game changer for me. I really had no idea what I was doing wrong and this broke it down into tangible steps for me that went so behind most vague tutorials. Thank you so much.
This SERIOUSLY helped me... wow what a difference. I have been doing my makeup for years, and this technique fixed what I hated about eyeshadow. The clown look! I get it now. Thank you!
Omg I’m 45 years old and this video just explained eyeshadow perfectly to me! Thank you!!!
Stephanie Keith same at 49 😂😂😂❤️
this.... this is what I wanna learn about. Not the drama in people’s life. MAKEUP
I took cosmetology but our instructor did not teach this technique to us. I'm glad that I've watch your video😉
So genuine. Your channel should be way bigger than it is! 💕
Thank u! 🖤

Yup me too!
Just subscribed! Love your channel!
I found your channel recently and now I'm addicted. I've spent every night watching more of your videos. You give such great advice!
Wow - just tried this and my eyes turned out amazing!!!!! The colors are so soft and blended and professional looking!!! I had no idea that I should be using the blending brush in the way you demonstrated. SMH!! Thank you!
this is one of the best tutorials for eye makeup ever♥️✨
I definitely do the wrong thing 😂 thanks for this I was so frustrated! now I see where I went wrong. 🥰
This video changed my life I was doing the one on the “bad” eye and I was like wtf am I doing wrong?! Thank you soooo much for this!!!!😍😍😍
This was so helpful I’ve been doing my eye shadow all wrong😩 I kept wondering why was it giving off a certain look now I know thank you❤️
Thank you so much. Even though I'm not an expert, I totally understood what I was doing incorrectly. You're awesome.
This video helped me more than any other video or beauty book I've seen. Thank you
Wow men got this makeup game down frfr. Love this so much.
Me with 22 in quarantine thought i should start playing with makeup just to realize how truly bad I am with it 🙃 but hey I'm ready to learn! Thanks for the vid!
My eyes are hooded and your “wrong” technique is actually what works well for me. I think what might not work or be incorrect to you, is right for someone else
He says in the top comments that hooded eyes are different!
Thank you for sharing!
This makes so much sense, I see so many people do this wrong. Im glad you've showed me the right way
