Cod fishing with live shrimp and cheese | fishing with live prawns

- Live freshwater shrimp (sometimes called freshwater prawns) are, in my opinion, one of the best fishing baits that we have here in freshwater Victoria. The cod, yellowbelly and redfin all love them and this video demonstrates just that.
Where I come from in North East Victoria they are commonly called shrimp, or freshwater shrimp. The same species in other parts of Australia are sometimes called freshwater prawns. What you call them comes down to where you come from I think.
I'm not 100% certain, but I think they may be scientifically known as Macrobrachium Australiense

Talking about ants Robbie, everyone thinks they're the hardest working insect in the world. I disagree with that, most times I see them they're either at a picnic or BBQ.
Hahahaha so true. 😅😅😅😅 Do you know how to tell the sex of an ant? Throw it in the water. If it sinks it's girl ant. If it floats it's boy ant. (Bouyant)
@@robbiefishing HA HA I guess you're right Robbie but I've never put it o the test yet.
@@robbiefishing im antsy to go and catch a fish
Go Barkly tablelands they hunt you down them devil lizard there they eat them
Great session on the Shrimp, always find when you catch plenty of Shrimp you are in for a good day!!
Thanks mate, I agree. Shrimp are an awesome bait.
Great video, Robbie.
You made me hungry just watching it and they way I like to eat fish with no knife and fork. Plain and simple. 💯👍🏾
Thanks so much mate.
Great video Robbie I did enjoy this video gonna watch it again you have a great night and a better day tomorrow my friend
Thank you so much for your kind words Tim. I hope you're having a great day.
I love your videos Robbie. Thanks mate
Thanks so much Rew.
Great to see an old spot still producing the goods. Nice Vid 🎣👍
Thanks so much Mat. I'm so glad it has all reopened.
A little tip for the cheese is. Make it into a past 🙂, stays on the hook longer. Plus if you use a bait runner reel, you can hear the run . And won't lose your rod & reel.
Good session.
well done Robbie, great session 👍
Thanks so much Noah.
Great video Robie✌️🙂
Thanks so much Tubby.
So good to come home from a fishing trip and watch Robbie fishing 😁
Thanks so much Blake. I hope you caught a few mate.
@@robbiefishing sadly we didn’t but hopefully I can get 1 or 2 after school tomorrow
Great viewing again 🇦🇺
Thanks mate..👍
That was a great shot of the woodland on the river
And great fishing too
Thank you for sharing your awesome videos
Thanks so much for watching mate. 👍
G’day Robbie, couple of nice little fish, mate 👍🏼. Those shrimp and cheese were good bait.
Thanks Wayne. They sure are great baits mate. Live shrimp is dynamite bait for native fish.
Brilliant mate! Looking forward to seeing that spot in the flesh and having as good a time as you in a few weeks time!
Thanks Les..yep, I can't wait. I'm so glad it is all opened up again.
Love the jokes. Laughter is a wonderful thing. HahahahaGod bless.
Haha thank you so much Becky. It sure is a wonderful thing. I hope you're having a blessed day. 🙏
Great session Robbie, well done mate 👍🏽
Thanks so much Bianca.
Amazing old spot thank you for you content
Thanks so much for watching.
Cracking video Robbie🤙
Thanks so much mate.
That great Robbie can’t wait to watch it so excited when I saw your name pop up 😊
Thanks so much mate. I hope you enjoy it.
Great channel love the content -I love putting shrimp back to back but both ways work
Thanks NOLA, that certainly is an excellent technique.
They cant resist the live bait! Good session robbie!
Thanks mate, you're not wrong.
Great session Robbie
Thanks mate.👍
Cool vid buddy 😎👍😎
Hiya rob
What a great session, I love fishing shrimp, but normally under a float for sea bass great sport..
Mate well done excellent video.
Thank you 😎🏴
Thanks so much Michael. Catching sea bass sounds like a lot of fun mate.
Hey Robbie! Shout out from the State of Texas. I'm a fan mate! 💪😎
Thank you so much my friend. 🙏
Another good video well done let me just say keep up the good work cheers
Thank you so much mate.
Good one mate 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam. 👍
Good one!
Thanks mate.
Good job Robbie
Thanks so much Lynne.
Great video Robbie I love fishing with Shrimp I often put them back to back if I’ve got plenty and that makes them flick under the water
Thanks Peter. I have fished them back to back myself. I do prefer 1 because I like it natural, but I know full well how well 2 or 3 on the one hooks works.
@@robbiefishing just rewatched your catch and Cook video from 12 months ago I was reminded by a friend recently that people of European decent actually put them to sleep on Ice roll them in flour and then fry in a pan and eat whole - never tried it but sounds interesting
@@peterhipwell4632 It certainly sounds a lot easier than trying to shell them. They're rather fiddly. Haha
Hey Robbie, not a bad arvo fishing. Plenty of small cod. That's a good sign of bigger fish in the future.
Thanks Kenneth, I hope so mate. No doubt many will get eaten by larger fish but a few should grow big.
Hey mate my favorite freshwater Aussie fisherman
Thank you so much for your kind words mate.
I catch redfin on golden perch on shrimp, well.... when the river isn't going berserk haha awesome vid! 😁🎣
Thanks mate. They are dynamite bait for both of those species aren't they.
I hope your river settles soon.
@@robbiefishingyep they are 🙂 caught heaps last summer before I started the UA-cam channel haha. Hoping end of this year will be way better 😁🤞
Nice.
ONE THING ON YELLOW BELLY THEY LIKE THE SCRUB WORM THAT PUSHES THAT YELLOW SLIME OUTA THE BODY IF HANDLED HARD OR WHEN HOOK IS PLACED INTO WORM.
Steak fat that's different I'll have to give this a go now haha. I just came back from Mansfield went to Jamison river for a flick in the river for trout and wow some many trout around up there I lost 3 really good size ones gotta be 46cms easy
WOW that's so awesome, sounds like you had a lot of fun. I'm still yet to catch a cod on the steak fat but I've had a couple of nice bites. It's very hard for them to pull off.
Went to the Melbourne aquarium today and I was suprised to see yabbies there 😂
That's really cool. I've never been there.
A good carp fishing spot to go to is numurkah creek next to numurkah footy club, everytime I go there I never get less than 20 fish.
That's awesome. There are so many carp around at the moment.
Does it get anymore Aussie than that Robbie?
Murray Cod & Trout Cod caught on Shrimp with a background sound mix of Cockies and Koalas.
Sensational.👍
Haha thanks Bruce. So true, it's a very Aussie place down there mate.
Part of Mildura on the NSW side on water restrictions nearly week ago Robbie , unbelievable. Went from flood to nothing. Apparently pumps struggling with low water lol. Finally they've put the weir back and levels have started to rise to "normal" again .
WOW that's unbelievable given that it was on major flood not that long ago.
All the water up here is clean now
That's excellent news.
WHEN YA THINK ABOUT IT NOT TO MANY PLACES WERE YA CAN GET 2 COD SPECIES IN FRESH WATER VERY SPECIAL. TOP STUFF.
Have a go with bbq sausages mate, the boys have been smashing them at milawa.
Thanks mate, sounds awesome.
Hey robbie you are my favourite UA-cam and fisherman I would absolutely love to meet you and go fishing I live in Bendigo keep up the awesome work
Thanks so much mate. Hopefully we can cross paths some day.
Shrimp are 🔥. Best bait I’ve found for me personally is: lamb hearts and off cuts. Can even get the odd yabby as well. Gum leaves I never use anymore. I can’t be bothered looking for shrimp when I get it out from there 🤣
Good gum leaves is the best bait by far for shrimp haha
Haha they sure are amazing bait mate.
@@chriscoyne4827 100% if I had the patience to look for them 😂
@@robbiefishing 100% Robbie. I’m very very impatient with getting shrimp. So searching through the gun leaves gets me going bonkers 🤪
where abouts is the lower ovens mate?
your killing it mate
Thanks mate. Anywhere downstream of Wangaratta.
I think Paratya australiensis is the shrimp that is Victorian rivers, which is known as the freshwater shrimp. I could be wrong, but as far as i know it is a shrimp species.
Thanks mate. I thought they were macrobrachium Australianese, but I also could be wrong. I need to research. You may very well be correct.
At least no fingers were deeply skewered in the making of this video.
Hahaha
Live shrimp, hard to beat. Good to see the trout cod in numbers, 30 years ago you very rarely saw one, and their future looked bleak.
Thanks mate. 30 years ago we rarely saw a cod of any species in the Ovens River. It was all carp and redfin. It's amazing the transformation.
@@robbiefishing 👍
Hi Robbie, have you tried raw chicken breast? I've been having more success with it than cheese lately, and it is actually cheaper per kilo than cheese and i freeze what i dont use and use again next time. It also stays on the hook much better, and I've caught 2 or 3 fish on the same piece a few times.
Hi mate, I have caught cod on chicken several times on my channel. It is an excellent bait and something that I should use more often.
couldnt agree more! i use chicken on a 6/0 circle hook and it works a treat. although, i also manage to catch plenty of carp on the same setup, 38 over three days camping on the river last time i went out for cod with the biggest 3 all being 73cm@@robbiefishing
Robbie what tips would you give to some one starting out fishing in a kayak for natives
Hi mate, check out my kayak fishing playlist, there's heaps of videos on there and they're loaded with tips.
I was watching this
that where you caught the cod video and got a hook in ya finger
Thanks mate, no this was upstream a little bit. Same section of river, but about a kilometre away.
'Look at the size of that!' That's what she said!
Hahahaha
see if you can get a bait runner reel mate they're useful for cod when they're bighting hard like that.
Hey mate thanks for the great suggestion..
I think you dropped a couple because your drag is a touch light Robbie.
Quite possibly Neil.
Hi Robbie just wondering what sort of rod is the one you caught the small trouty on? Regards Murray
Hi mate, I'm not completely sure, but I think it is a Silstar powertip or something similar. It's just an old cheap soft tipped rod that desperately needs to be replaced. Haha
@@robbiefishing thanks mate it looks like a nice rod, them silstar rods are very good l have a few and my old man swears but them, al the best mate, Murray
Hey Robbie does it seem like hook up rate is a bit lower lately or is it me?, it seems like I’m getting tonnes of really good bites but never seem to hook them properly
Hi mate, I find that it varies from trip to trip. Some days they bite better than others.
Love the vids can you please do some more yabbing vids and fishing on the bote
Thanks mate. Absolutely I will be.
I wach about 20 of you video aday you are my favourite UA-cam for the past 3 years I have been watching you
I am running out of yabbies video to wach and kayak video of your.vids
@@LiamGifford haha I will get to it ASAP buddy.
Murray cod bite hard, no fooling around with them.
Completely different compared to carp.
You're not wrong mate. BANG...They are great at pulling fishing rods in. LOL
Too many dad jokes Robbie... although I guess I still watched it all so well played
LOL No such thing as too many Dad jokes. 🤣🤣
And thanks for watching mate. 👍👍
Hi I went trout fishing today
What trout lures would you recommend
Hi mate, check out my trout fishing playlist. There's hundreds of videos full of lures. 👍
How great were the shrimp as bait Robbie🎣🦞
Thanks Simon, you're not wrong mate. Dynamite bait for sure.
Ever tried witchetty grubs for bait? I tried them the other day with no success
Hi mate, I sure have. Search for "robbiefishing cockchafer grubs" and be prepared to laugh. LOL
@@robbiefishing watched it just now haha
hi robbie where is this and do you know any good murray cod spots because my grandson has never caught a cod and has always wanted to
Hi Gerald, this is the lower Ovens River mate and it is a wonderful Murray cod fishing spot.
@@robbiefishing is it in wangarratta i dont know where the lower ovens river is
Wish I could get a heap of those shrimp near me. My turtle would love them. If you know of anywhere near sth east Melbourne let me know pls.
Thanks mate. Sadly I don't know that area at all sorry.
ive been to the goulburn river now twice and not even a single bite :( i used mozzarella cheese and chicken are these good for murray cod or yellas?
Cheese is great for cod mate but I've never caught a Yella on it..
@@robbiefishing any cheese is good like mozzarella or tasty? also i heard chicken is good for cod aswell but yabbies, worms are good for yellas :)
Great video! 40 minutes before the first ‘impatience’ check Robbie? You’re clearly slipping. I reckon I recognise that cheese too 🤮.
Hahaha thanks Frank. I actually put that cheese in a collapsible bait trap today and caught yabbies with it. 😅🤣
@@robbiefishing Really? Didn’t know yabbies liked blue vein …. 😁
Robbie , do you think it is a True story that Murray Cod will eat a golf ball ?
There are often Golf Courses close by the Murray River.
Hey mate, it is definitely true. I have gutted cod with gold balls in their stomachs.
@@robbiefishing Oh good one - the boys were talking about it and the next day they showed be like a brand new gold ball a freshly gutted Cod.
I believed them , but always until this day , I sort of thought they may have been having a lend of me
Can't BEAT the old live shrimp! DID you see my new vid Robbie?
You're not wrong mate. I actually did watch it. I watched it on my TV while eating tea. Lovely Blackfish, well done. It looked great cooked up too. Sorry I didn't comment. I was going to comment when I next picked up my phone and totally forgot.
@@robbiefishing Haha ok nw then mate! yeah it came out good!
what hooks do you use when bait fishing ?
Hi mate, I like normal bait holder hooks.
@@robbiefishing thanks mate, enjoy your videos
We don't film anymore, we video.
How come sometimes you throw fish back and sometimes you place them back ?
It depends where I am. It is impossible to place them back in this spot as I am so high above the water so I have no choice but to throw them back.
@@robbiefishing I'm sure you would have if you could have.
@@mohammednovalija Absolutely I would.
Isn’t that the spot where a cod pulled your rod in once a few years ago
Haha yep it sure is. Well spotted.
RIPPER FISH MAN LUCKY BUGGER. HERE IN QLD NOT A THING LIKE IT.
Thanks Brett. I am so lucky to live where I do.
@@robbiefishing YEP BUCKET LIST FISH AS WELL UNREAL
I'm a big fan of live baits for fresh or salt fishing. Nothing quite like it. From what I've seen, the fish tend to strike harder on live baits than on cut/dead baits.
Are you going to have to start paying Mental As Anything royalties soon? lol
Haha I hope they don't copyright me. LOL
@@robbiefishing lol
Fun video Robbie, you can have a nice feed of Cheese, Fat and Shrimp after your hot 🥵 shower! If you’re game hehe 😜.
Hahahahaha that's funny. Thanks mate. 👍
Have you tried chicken soaked in soya sauce give it a crack
Thanks mate I must try that. I've caught cod on chicken, but not with sou sauce.
They mite bè hitting the rump fat cause its got shrimp sitting on it
Quite possibly mate.
Maybe cray’s pulling on that steak fat
I think the bite was way too hard to be honest. A vrau would never hit that hard. I rarely see craus at this time of the year, not even on worms.
@@robbiefishing Years ago was getting what I thought was big bites (trying fishing on liver) the crays we’re grabbing it and scooting back quickly and bending the rod hard, ended up holding the rod and kept tension and ended up dragging one in slowly, was pretty big. Had a few turtles take it too
You're not American lol Robbie 🤦🏼♂️ prawns.... 🦐
All of inland Victoria must be American then because everyone here calls them shrimp. LOL
