Lure Fishing For Murray Cod And Yellowbelly At Lake Nillahcootie

  • Lake Nillahcootie is often overlooked as a lure fishing destination for those targeting Murray cod and yellowbelly. This could be due to the fact that Lake Eildon is only 10 minutes away, or because people may be scared off by the dirty water.
    Bait fishing however is very popular at Lake Nillahcootie.
    In this video I prove that lure fishing can be very successful at Nillahcootie, although finding larger fish can be a but tricky.

      Knew the guys from the Spies quite well, we used to go to all their local gigs and a mate was a photographer for the local paper, so we would get shots of all the bands. Some were really cool, others not so much. Spies were the best. A few times I would drop off the photos the morning after the gig and have breakfast with them at the hotel. It's good to see a lot small yellow belly and cod it shows that hopefully we are building the breeding stock.😂😂

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 7 місяців тому

      More likely, it is the 100,000 yellowbelly fingerlings stocked last February growing out. Don't want to blow the bubble, neither cod nor yebblies breed in lakes.Only carp and redfin. There might be limited recruitment from river spawn cod, but yebblies spawn in floodplains when the water is high. Dams and locks and weirs are the major factor in the DECLINE of these species, not the introduction of carp. They were already gone by then.
      My question at this point is, are the fish that have bred many generation in the rivers and dams not now naturalised at the least or native by virtue of being a hybrid found only in Australia? Are they not MORE native then the "Native" fish we introduce in huge numbers? Many places, if we stop stocking them, will peter out in a few years but the carp and redfin will remain.
      Sad facts but true.

    the live scope is the demise of the fishery. great now but once they are used the pop. will decline and the all part of the plan one step at a time. 2 cents trolling in rev. and/or in a serpentine method puts a shift in speed to the lure and often catch more fish.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 7 місяців тому +1

      Mate. Graphite rods were the demise of the fishery, braid line was the demise of the fishery, polaroids was the demise of the fishery, side scan sounders were the demise of the fishery. I am pretty sure that back in the day floats were the demise of the fishery, hooks were the very devil themselves. LOL.
      Calm down. Live scope is NOT going to be the demise of anything. People still have to catch the fish for a start.

      Hi mate, you may be best heading into your local tackle store and asking them buddy.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 7 місяців тому +1

      That is an open question. What are you targetting? What terrain? What lures? All these things will affect the length and type of rod you get. If limited in space for casting due to overhanging trees and stuff, you want something in the 5'6 range. If you are trying to put a big cod lure half way across the lake, you will want a longer rod with a lot more "OOmph" than if you are tossing small vibes for redfin and goldens in the margins. Horses for courses.
      BIG RECOMMENDATION - If you are LEFT HANDED, get a reel with the standard retrieve handle on the right side. This is in fact set up for LEFT HANDERS. If you are looking for a LEFT HANDED reel for Right Handed casting, with a handle on the left, then you can pick up a reel with LEFT SIDE HANDLE (to hold rod in right hand) from most brands, but you may have to order it as many stockists do not keep them, frustratingly, in stock. You should select a reel that allows you to hold he rod in the dominant hand and reel wtith off hand as it gives you much more control of your fishing.
      Hope you catch a whale with your new gear mate. Do not overspend on fancy stuff, get reliable and reputable mid priced gear that will last a long time. That will allow you to learn with a reliable kit and then move up if you require it later. Cheap and nasty is nasty. Avoid the hassles.

    I don't like them. I also don't like people taking 30 or 40 redfin.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 7 місяців тому

      TBF, I don't like taking even 1 redfin, however, I cannot fault anyone for taking 1 or 1000. They are, when all is said and done, a feral pest species. Whilst I do not subscribe to the notion that as anglers we can wipe them or carp oout, so return those I catch, I can also appreciate those who do remove them and take them out of the environment. While I do not think it is doing good, in some states it is illegal to return them, such as Victoria, an in others an overabundance of redfin creates "stunt"fisheries, where the young reddies eat out the food very fast and they grow quite fast. At first. However, their growth stops and the other fish suffer from lack of food. This is much less common now than in the past before native introductions could keep pace and regulate the numbers. However, apart from humans, some birds, water rats and other predatory fish, there is not much else to put predatory pressure on them (unlike their home environment in Europe where Pike, big Brown Trout and other predators keep them in check )
