  • WOW What an amazing crayfish opening I had this year. I caught a lot of crayfishing including big crays, small crays, legal crays and even one white crayfish.

    Great video, great session…..looking great for the season ahead. Reminded me so much of some 40 years ago when I lived in Wodonga and my wife and I would head down to the creek and catch a sack of crays and cook them up and feast. Now my wife and I catch the odd yabby and the son’s bush block, sit around the fire and enjoy a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing Robbie.

    Hi Robbie r.s.p.c.a gave me the dispatch method. Put 'em in an ice slurry. & use a French knife/ large knife I'm thinking a Chinese cleaver and a mallet , they slice them longitudinal start with the head to dispatch then slice behind the carapace and tail. One thing my mate did correctly was cable tie the claws . I'm content now I know how to this process easily and humanly. If I go craying with my mate , I 'll do it the correct way , and kindly share how I do it, up to him what he does with his catch😊 . Good to see heaps of females in roe returned and the crays are prolific , what river? Spot ?😂😂😂

    G'day Robbie, what a great opening day for you, certainly had a huge haul there.
    I have a question, why is the cray fishing season open over a time when the cray fish are obviously breeding with the females all carrying eggs, seems completely backwards compared to say the murray cod season opening and closure anyway another great vid, looking forward to the next.
    Cheers.

      @robbiefishing  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Daryl. I believe, and could be wrong that the season is open now because the females are carrying their eggs. If it was open after they dropped their eggs people would harvest them while they had no eggs which could lead to an overharvest of females.

      When I was growing up the rule of thumb was that the best crayfishing was in the months that didn't have an R in them. These days the law says we can only go crayfishing in winter.

    Handy tip Robbie: for the first cray you got, you can identify the gender the same way if it’s a boy (genital pore on the last set of legs) or female (on the middle set I think but it’s not on the bottom).

      Thanks mate, spot on. I usually just go by whether it has eggs or not, which isn't accurate because not all females carry eggs.

    Love your videos Robbie! Im new to the Wangaratta area, and wondering if you could give us some advise on where the hotspots are mate? Both for yabbie hunting and crays, ive got so many questions, anywhere from what is your go to bait? To where and what nets you use for yabbies and crays, any helo would be great, closer central to wang the better/along on the ovens, but dont mind travelling abit. Cheers in advance mate
