The WS6 Broke In A Surprising Way... We Got LUCKY Then Fixed It QUICK!

- Thanks for watching today's video! We sure got lucky where the car locked up and parked. Unfortunately, we needed a tow after trying to load it onto a friends trailer. It simply wasn't going to happen with the rear end locked up solid like it was.
This was an upgraded f-body rear end that unfortunately ran itself dry before I was able to catch it.
I had my buddy Rick rebuild the Strange 12 Bolt with a 3.90 gear ratio, dura-grip limited slip differential, 33 spline axles and a solid pinion spacer. Time to break it in!

This could have easily ended up with us off of the road or into another vehicle while going down the highway. It really is fortunate how it all ended up all things considered. Thanks for watching this (bummer) update on the WS6!
Love watching the trans am! Totally off subject here, but I replaced my license plate light to LED. Looks waaay better white than that yellow! Can’t way for more TA content!
0:23 You know that your passenger front wheel is bent right? Saw it as your loading it up n still watching the vid
Glad to see youre safe after that. Crazy to see a bearing that wrecked.
I understand protecting your back and staying within your limits! I was bulletproof until one day I realized I wasn’t anymore. Now I’ve got a life long injury to contend with. Stay safe because no matter how big and bad you are once your back is toast it changes your life.
I’ll add to your “nothing but bad things about Sportlines”. They’re garbage. I don’t speak from personal experience but when I’ve seen the specs on them, they’re a lower rate spring than the Pro Kit and lower the car more… that’s asinine. The SLP Level 1 suspension package was amazing for street driving and it’s too bad it’s no longer seems to be available. Was for years.
I blame that load of beer from a few months back
Haha. That's probably what did it in. Talk about overloaded
I despise silicone gasket maker. The instructions say to let it firm up before assembling and I have yet to try that, makes sense if you can apply an even bead, I guess. The usual method is to place a bead and assemble and then any excess will squeeze out - on both sides. I do not want bits of silicone material sloshing around in bearings and gears. No, I am not say this caused the damage in any way. It is just a foreign object getting into something unnecessarily. I have discovered The Right Stuff and it is terribly tenacious when separating the pieces but using it will stop any leak at the mating surfaces. Actually I much prefer using the gasket intended. A racing engine builder/machine shop did my friends 64 Corvette, 365 H.P. with the Winters intake and used silicone across the back and front of the block. It developed one heck of a leak at the back somewhere along the 2 machined surfaces. When we removed the manifold, the silicone was not adhering to the block and places on the intake. This was a pro build by a man that was in business from the 60's to the 2000's. I used 3M contact cement and when "dry" placed the OEM style gasket in place and voila, no more problems. I have never had success with silicone.
It’s not called a snout lol it’s called the pinion yolk , ring gear ⚙️, lol nice thanks BigAl California
Boy that winch on the truck sound# terrible lol ok you will need to be checking all mechanical plugs and others , lol ok , nice thanks BigAl California
When I worked at a parts store an old gentlemen came in and said at the top of his lungs “YOU ALL HAVE ANY WHALE SPERM???” He was hard of hearing. Anyways little did I know the limited slip additive is/used to be sperm whale oil. Fun fact.
Those RIMS!!😍😍😍😍😍
Sorry to see that bro! Good time to upgrade! It will be back better than ever!!
That's the spirit! It needs some suspension fixes too. Better now than later.
@@Greenlightfilming sounds like a good plan 💯🇺🇸🤘
Always use liquid teflon pipe sealer on the bearing cap support threads when using that style of cover. Stops fluid from migrating up the threads.
dude that sucks! I just LS swapped a 94 dakota and it's awesome! So happy wit the Truck Norris cam, we just got it fired up tonight after a solid week of work 😂
A friend on mine had almost the same thing happen on a new truck. During the dealer inspection someone left the fill plug out. At about 300 miles, while driving 70 on the interstate, the driveshaft sheared off and the housing exploded. The driveshaft beat everything on the underside of the truck. They manufacturer/dealer took care of him and replaced the truck.
Yikes. That's about how violent it felt when it locked up. I was pretty worried it broke a lot more than the rear end. I got pretty lucky I guess.
I had a 5-speed explode on me while on the highway. Right out of nowhere. It sounded fine, until it wasn't.
Glad you got stopped and pulled over safely.
Beside rear end. I recommend finding a guy that fixes rims. Your front right has a noticeable bend on the bead lip. Luckily I have a guy in Brandon Wi to take care of my racing rims.
It's not the first time I've bent a rim lip like that. These aluminum wheels really can't take much of a bump over noticed. Need to find someone to true it locally.
I love this car!
You’re the best you tuber
Letterkenny. Respect.
I was doing a rolling burnout form bout 20mph in my SBC Fox and herd a loud Ping. Later when swapping in an auburn pro, different gear, all new bearings and moser axles, found that the pinion bearing lost a roller and it got flattened by the ring & pinion. Looked crazy but still drove fine LOL
There is no way the rearend should be make a sound at all , it definitely should not be howling like that , nothing will make a sound like that unless it has straight cut helical gears , they will make that sound , your rearend is not set up right , probably going to go out again soon , faster if you’re doing burnouts with it all the time and drifting it’ll go out faster , lol thanks BigAl California
It says right in aftermarket rear end service manuals that you should fully expect them to make more noise than the stock unit. Mine also has aftermarket LCA's and PHB with spherical ends on the rear end side. All told it's going to be a lot noisier than a 100% stock setup.
4:30 im guessing pinion bearing welded itself to the race……9:45 pinion bearing came apart and on decel the pinion walked back and banged into the posi unit taking ring gear teeth with it or the bearing rollers got into the teeth. Either way i can imagine the noise it was making when slowing down though lol. Ive seen a lot of 8.8s puke the pinion seals from the vent being plugged and usually weld the bearing rollers to the race then spin the race in the housing….here is a tip, 12 bolt and 8.8 carry the same carrier and one of the pinion bearings but one of them are different.
DAM! that 12 bolt look like my stock 7.5 10 bolt, when it. 💥.
Ha, they can sure make some carnage when they go
@@Greenlightfilming I see that. When you took off that cover I was like. 👀. DAM
Those LPW rear diff covers are the best out there especially when you use the brace kit, I would have put it in a Detroit locker it has helical gears instead of springs and clutches a lot stronger Price is not much more
That whine would drive me nuts! I don't buy the fact aftermarket 12 bolt gears whine. Stock 12 bolts don't whine or else nobody would buy them. I had a shop replace my stock 10 bolt gears with 4.10 aftermarket Richmond and Motive etc and they whined bad! They replaced with Yukon 4.10 and no rear end howling.
Replacing with exactly the same part that caused the problem? I'd be looking at other covers.
I went with 3.73s Ford gears in my Mustang and was whisper quiet, added c clip eliminators, same quiet. Swapped it into my track car with heim joints on the control arms with 0 interior sound deadening and man that thing had a whine that echoed thru the car horribly lol, every dip or thump in the road sounded like i hit somebody.
Haha I can imagine. It seems like aftermarket control arms really let the noise into the car (especially heim joints). This car is tolerable on the highway, although the exhaust drones pretty bad after a couple hours.
Bummer!
Harsh toke for sure
Wow 2 quarts seems VERY high to me. But I'm not a GM guy so I don't know how these are filled. I only know my BMW LSD takes only 1.2 Liters which is barely over 1 quart. (1.05 Quarts). But I don't know GM as I said.
Another damn is that your garage seems to be too low for two post hoist 🙁
What wheels are those? Specs?
Weld RTS - S71. Specs are at 2:00 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/IlypIB8W2gg/v-deo.html
I have a 88 gta trans am Pontiac firebird tpi and t5 with a bw 9 bolt posi stock 3.42 gears
My dad was driving in highway going 100km and up a hill 600kms away to my grandma's and the rear axel locked up from leaking out of the diff plug
We have concrete driveway and he was anal about oil leaks
If there was a leak we would have replaced it
We got a new used rear end from a shop in Toronto called paradise alley
Auto 9 bolt posi
120km 650 and the van real a.d gas
We switched it out at my grandma's and it stripped the 5th gear out of the tranny so I drove the whole way home 4th gear churingb metal but it made it and the I took it off and rebuild the t5
The 5ty gear was stripped hard and the car is mine 8 years ago 2 years ago one spring saw diff fluid leaking out of the plug and no one has parts for the 9 bolt
I got a new one 9 bolt. Com in austrialia 24 bucks
And it almost happen ed to me again
If it wasn't frozen and I was trying to get it unstuck I would have never noticed it
Your lucky you had the t56 and not weak t5
T5 striped 5th gear
And that's why I have a lt1 t56 swap now
It's way stronger but it is 25lns heavier
Wanna donate your old low cover?
I'll sell it if you'd like to fix it up and use it. Its garage art right now. Shoot me an email - greenlightproducers@gmail.com
It’s amazingly stupid that you ran out of oil sorry for your luck brother nice car though
No doubt. What a dumb way to destroy a rear end
This pains me to see this.... 😢😢😢 I have a drip on mine and i've neglected to pay attention to it much because its just a drip. Its a factory 10 bolt too with 60k miles aftermarket cover. This was a wake up call...
EDIT: just wanted to ask, have you had to replace your headlight control module in your car yet?? mine went out and the headlights flip up and down every time i lock or unlock the car
😑... Do you know where i could get a solid one thats preferably not used? ebay is nonstop used, and a friend gave me a spare he had, but it went out after 1 night of driving to and from work (work nights) so it only had a couple uses left on it now im back to square one.
Sounds like your headlight motors are bad or the plastic gears are stripped.
@@michaelm3381 so its not the module?
@@EvansWS6 it possibly could be, but usually the motor or gears wear out first.
You said in this video you need to replaced the bilstein shocks and sportsline springs? Dont you have the summit racing springs?
That's right, good catch. It does have Summit Racing springs. I don't know why I said Sportline haha. They are rhe more popular spring i guess.
@@Greenlightfilming lol most of the f body owners dont like eibach they sit too low. I like how your ws6 sits, i got the Strano lowering springs and mine looks to sit a little lower. By any chance do you have the part # for your springs?
