Whenever I think of dinosaurs fighting each other I’m always reminded of that magic school bud episode where they state that most predatory dinosaurs were: just animals looking for an easy meal without getting hurt
I just want to say how much I love how you have the entrance of the Eyewitness movies in these videos. Also, Stromer pissed off the German government via his anti-war stance and since they couldn't get to him via being a science person and their pro-science stance, they got him indirectly via not protecting his fossils like the Berlin dinosaurs.
Here's some info left out of this video that I figure would be important to know. In the mentioned 2022 study by Sereno and colleagues, they suggested that the tail was used for display rather than swimming similar to modern animals with tall neural spines in that area. This is due to the fact that comparing Spino's tail to those of extinct and extant aquatic fauna like mosasaurs, cetaceans, crocodilians and newts, etc. All those aquatic tails are all composed of fleshy tail flukes and not the skeletally-supported fin of Spinosaurus. Whilst comparing the tail to modern species of basilisk lizards (yes, the same one originally thought to have attacked Tina at the start of the Jurassic Park novel), you'll notice that basilisk lizards also have a sail on their tail and trunk section nearly identical to that of Spinosaurus and considering basilisk lizards also use their sails for display, it's likely the tall neural-spined backs of Spinosaurus were used for the same purpose. Another bullet point is how the appendage surface area to total surface area ratio is compared to terrestrial and aquatic animals (again, both extinct and extant) as reduction in limb surface area is important to keep your form hydrodynamic. Not only was the appendage surface area to total surface area ratio of Spinosaurus way higher than any aquatic fauna, it actually surpasses that of T. rex and Suchomimus and is roughly equal to (ironically) Acrocanthosaurus. Again pointing to it being poorly built for an aquatic lifestyle. Moral of the story: it'll take way more evidence to prove Spinosaurus is a swimmer than just the fact that the tail shape is a good source of propulsion (assuming it's flat and not rounded with a fin, no less) and the leg bones are dense.
I think the spines would probably be muscle attachment points. It would look more like a hump than a sail kinda like acracanthosaurus but even more extreme.
Love hearing the name Oxalaia mentioned!!!!! 🎉🎉 Ive loved that fragmentary fossil since i was a child and hopefully we'll find a full speciman one day!!
On the topic of whether or not spinosaurus could swim, a friend of mine posed a very interesting hypothesis. He said that spinosaurus could have been a shoreline hunter, never actually swimming when it hunted fish. However he also said that it could have used water as a way of transportation when it wasn’t hunting, to get from one side of a lake, river or swamp. Since it was only using swimming for transport, it wouldn’t need to dive and would only swim at the surface of the water. If you spot this comment DF I’d be interested to hear what you think about it since this hypothesis has intrigued me a lot.
Gonna be honest as someone who grew up on Jurassic Park and likes the 3rd one and Spino: His canonical design now is way better. It's like a hybrid of those big spined lizards from early on in the age before Dinosaurs and a gator. The tail looks so unique and functional for a species that clearly looked like they stayed near rivers/lakes and just seems more intimidating.
FINALLY, a video about understanding one of my 2 favorite dinosaurs EVER (the other being Dilo). Hope to see more videos like this in the future brah! 👍
I love the long form content. I’d love videos on giganotasaurus and Carcharodontosaurus if at all possible at some point. Love these informative videos
Best spinosaurus documentary I've seen in a while especially better than monsters resurrected spino Kaiju I love your videos bro keep up the amazing work you do 👍👍👍👍👍
Right, so I'm writing this comment prior to watching cuz I'm inexplicably excited to see this. Imma add further comments and sheer geekery after watching this and probably bouncing up and down in my seat the whole time since I'm a full-blown adult with a hyperfixation on the coolest things that walked the frickin' Earth!
Two minutes in I was already losing it! This was extremely comprehensive and aware of the paleontological "facts" always being subject to change based on new discoveries. I am loving this series! Can't wait to see more!!!!
There are herons where I live (Sweden). The animation at the beginning with a fishing Spinosaurus reminds me of a heron; they fish by standing absolutely still with the beak just above the water's surface, ready to grab a fish. I have seen them do it, and it seems to be a successful way of getting food. We don't know for sure that Spinosaurus behaved like this, of course, but it is an interesting theory. I hope more fossils can be found, to increase our knowledge of this fascinating animal. Thank you for an interesting video. 🦕🦖
Amazing channel, I love how much dedication and work you put into this video so many people can learn more about Spinosaurus. I love Spinosaurus but there are many things I remain skeptical on it. Lastly, I just want to say that I personally belive that Spinosaurus was pursuit predator that hunted aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms, but I have also argued that maybe Spinosaurus was a pursuit predator but also a heren-like shoreline hunter at the same time. This is kinda unlikely but it has potential, I'm not saying I believe in this but hey only more research and evidence will help us understand Spinosaurus, furthernore, Spinosaurus is quite skeptical. But only more research and evidence will give insigths on the great Spinosaurus.
beautiful video such as the spinosaurus, in my opinion spinosaurus was probably a piscivore who could swim and a hunter who had the weapons to fight against other theropods, however the key ability that permitted the spinosaurus to potentially fight againt other carnivores was using his sharp claws to keep them far away and to finish the job after that, perhaps I'm wrong, but I think Spinosaurus is a great dinosaur and definitely a good carnivore who else agrees with me ?
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a special announcement. A new 5-Star attraction has arrived in Jurassic Park: Spinosaurus. A truly frightening predator from Cretaceous Africa is now on display. Visitors with heart conditions should consult a doctor before viewing this dinosaur." - Jane Powers - Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. 😁
You should do another the fauna of video like your morrison and hell creek vids. Those two vids you made were great and there's tons of formations that would be awesome to cover like the Nemegt, Dinosaur Park, Cedar Mountain and Djadochta Formations
Cool video, although one thing I would like to change is the notion that Spinosaurus wasn't built to fighting other dinosaurs. As it implies that if the species got into competition It wouldn't know how to handle it. The statement also contradicthe fact that It was a generalist feeder If fish isn't available, it can supplement it main food with other animals.
I need to say more about spino/carchar confrontation. There is in fact a few fossils of the adult Carcharodontos most likely damaged by spinosaurus. For example the skull of SGM din1 have some marks of the teeth on it and there is a vertebra of carhar with the spino tooth sticking out of it. So, their confrontations might was more common thing than we thought, and the spino was more capable of fighting and killing other big carnivores
19:43-19:48 True, that version is way too outlandish for reality. But my God, poor Spinosaurus. Those in the afterlife are probably wondering why we still can’t figure out what they really look like 😅
It’s funny because Spinosaurus was never one of my favourites as a kid. To me it just seemed like another large carnivore that was being pushed to be better then T rex. The only thing that mildly intrigued me was that it had a sail and it could swim (maybe). It’s after the new material in 2014 I started to appreciate the animal a lot more. Sure it’s as controversial as anything on twitter, but it’s just so fascinating on how different it is compared to many species, even it’s family tree. It become one of my favourites just because on how strange it is, not famous media that got into species such as carnotaurus. Hopefully we get some justice for our boi and celebrate this dinosaur for looking into things we’ve never considered for it, and many others.

That vintage style voice recording scene was awesome, man.
I'm glad to hear some folks liked it. I really enjoyed doing it. Voice acting has always been something I'm interested in.
Having a Spinosaurus snatch someone up like heron in a new dinosaur horror movie would be really cool and scary to see.

this animal is just a pure paradox, hope we learn more about this amazing reptile in the future, great video btw!
