- Here is a complete breakdown of everything that is offered at the Riu Palace Guanacaste All-Inclusive resort in Costa Rica. We had the amazing opportunity to visit from December 10th to 17th of 2021.

Excellent review!! By far the most organized and easiest to digest I've ever seen. Scouting for our vacation now and I fell in love with that room. Doeas seem like the ocean is a long way away though. Going to have to check your channel to see where else you've been Very helpful video. Kudos on a job well done.

Being honest, this is our very first review-type video. It was done during a vacation we waited to go on for 2 years because of that Covid thing.
We would absolutely love to do more of these, and hope to, but just do not have a budget lol.

Did you stay at the Place or the cheaper sister hotel the Guanacaste? I was under the impression it was the more upscale one but in watching again as I was adding videos to my presentation for my wife of the resorts I've narrowed it down to, I noticed your title screen says Guanacaste which I thought was the cheaper resort. @@Kindred420 Please do not apologize. That is what we made this for.
We were here in December of 2021, so just a couple months ago. The only restrictions in place were masks inside buildings and when talking to staff at the towel exchange or front desk. Otherwise, it is your choice.
Now, it may have changed since the new numbers were in place but unlikely.
One thing to consider. The Riu Guanacaste is more of a family resort and is therefor filled with a lot of younger children in the restaurants, pools etc. If you are more interested in a quieter and more mature stay, go with the Palace. The palace also serves international brand name liquors (Smirnoff, JD, Wisers) and higher level food. The sister location will serve domestic brands.
Definitely worth it. We also spent more time outside the resort than in. Really depends on what your plans are.

Yes I’m with everyone else how was the nightlife outside for you guys? I watched another video that showed the nightlife and it looked awesome. But the way you guys bring it puts it all in better perspective the way you do it. Definitely ur nitch.
For the nightlife it was just the shows they put on. As mentioned, they were ok. Talented staff, but the shows were repetitive. When we were there the white party was not happening as there was still some Covid regulations in affect. We heard it was one of the best in the region so hopefully it’s the case for you if and when you go.
We will always take everyone’s feedback and put it to our future videos.
@@WhereToMagoo ok yes it was during the bad Covid invasion. But I believe that the nightlife outside of the resort is what I’ll be after once I get there. Once again you guys are fantastic at this to say it was a first time review...Wow!!! Professional to say the least.

As far as going off the resort…absolutely!!! Costa Rica is a very safe place. Keep in mind that all places around the world have their issues. We live in Canada and have areas we do avoid.
Costa Rica is an experience and is something. To explore. I will attach two links to videos we completed of our adventures while there. It is really up to you what you want to do. I would say taking in the culture and the lands is most important.

When we were there in December, we served ourselves other than the cooking stations. They were sanitizing all the time and keeping areas very clean.
Things are more than likely the same at this point.

Everything was included in the resort. Only things that were extra were the spa and souvenirs. Truly was a great place!

As far as travel time from the airport it is about 40 min. We took a private shuttle so it may be longer by bus.

Now, to answer your questions.
As far as top shelf alcohol, yes. The Guanacaste is standard bar rail, the Palace is all top shelf, this includes in your room. We did not film the bar supply in our review but it did have absolut, Do Julio etc. May change depending on inventory but that is the privileges of upgrading to the palace.
Room service is 24 hour, but it is a set menu with things like a chicken sandwich, pizza, nachos etc. Nothing too fancy but good enough to fill the late night cravings. Don't forget about Lounge 24. They have hot items for you to enjoy as well. There was no cost for the late night in our room. This might be different for the others but we cannot verify that.
We never paid for anything more than our excursions and tips. We did not use the spa which does cost extra, same as massages in the outdoor cabana. BUt other than that there really is nothing much else.
It was a great vacation spot with everything you will need.

My understanding is that the 2 bedroom suites are simply two standards with a door in between inside. The suite we stayed in are the largest single contained rooms onsite.

This is really based on where you are travelling from. For us, we were travelling from Toronto, Canada.
Our package included, accommodation, flight, meals and transport from the airport. It was booked through Sunwing Vacations on Tripcentral.com.
Cost was approx $2600 p/p. But we can say it was worth every penny. This was also booked almost 2 years ago and postponed due to the pandemic. We rebooked with a full credit. Costs may be different at this point.

Ok, we were here in December. This is about 2 months clear of rainy season. Weather was fantastic with a temps in the 85-90 range. If anything, avoid going in April-May. The heat is above 100 degrees every day or more. Once you are into June-Sept its rainy season and can be hit or miss for weather.
With this location, there is a strip between Riu Guanacaste and Riu Palace with some shops, couple snack places as well as the casino and nightclub. Shops were open but the club and casino were closed due to covid. There is also the waterpark which turned out to be a cool spot to hang out for a few hours.
With regards to excursions, tour carriers are all there with trips to offer. We actually took our chances for the first time and booked with one of the locals who are on the beach, Luis. He was amazing for what we did. He offers a ton of trips and is super knowledgeable and well known. One of our other videos where we went exploring has a segment with him in it. have a watch and you can see.
Transfers are typically provided by the tour operator you book with. If you just book your own flight down, and book directly with RIU, I believe they offer a private transfer. Do not quote me on that. We flew in with Sunwing and it was included, but we booked a private transfer to and from the airport. Also in one of our videos :)
People swam in the water a ton. If in doubt, bring your water shoes. There isn't any creatures or anything I know of swimming close to shore in the ocean.
You won't go wrong booking with RIU. Spend the extra bit of money to stay on this side as its all premium service.
Great detailed review! We'll be in Costa Rica for the first time in May, and deciding between this one and planet Hollywood... Did the rooms had a musty smell and a bit outdated and worn out as some of the reviewers have said? Any particular excursions is a must do for first timers in Costa Rica in your opinion? Thanks.

As far as the rooms, they were gorgeous and clean. In any sub-tropical locations, rooms will always have a humid feel to them. But these rooms were well maintained and spacious. We can only speak for The Palace aspect though, as we never did spend time at Guanacaste. You will be very satisfied with The Palace.
Depending on what you are looking for as far as excursions, will dictate must dos. We are adventurers so the zip line adventure we did down south is an absolute must!! 25 ziplines, waterfalls, swimming in the grottos and amazing food!! I’ll post both links to our adventure videos here for you to view. But everything from volcanoes to food to National Parks…it is endless.
Have a blast! Costa Rica is like no other place, and the people truly live the Pura Vida life.

For us, it was an amazing experience. The staff and property is what makes this place so spectacular. It’s all how you treat people yourself as well.
Food was fair to good. Cocktails are top
Shelf spirits and beer. It was also 3/4 full as it was still within Covid restrictions, on a mild scale mind you.
It’s within 3 hours of all the biggest attractions and small ones alike.
We highly recommend the RIU Palace as you can see in the video it’s worth the experience. Keep in mind, we were in Costa Rica for the adventures, not the resort. The next time we visit, it will be in a small, immersed property.
If you are visiting specifically for the all inclusive, weigh your options as all have pros and cons.

We would love to give you a comparison but we unfortunately haven’t been to the others. This was our first Riu. If the others are anything like this however, we cannot wait to check them out!
If anything we could probably say that the beaches as far as sand and water might be more appealing in Mex and DR. However, we were not there for the beaches. This beach is huge and soft, but it was what surrounded us is what we were in ah of.

When we were there in December, the only places requiring a mask was when you were walking through the building. Once you were in your room or at a table, prying was required. Outdoors was not required either, including the pool. Only when getting a towel or a drink from the dry bar by the pool.
As far as the food selections, yes. Buffets had ample selections for vegetarians, vegans etc. this included all the restaurants.
And with venturing outside the resort..absolutely!! That was our main goal on this trip as we are adventures.
1) if you decide on Riu, and you should, please be sure to go to the beach and see Luis, from Luis Solutions Adventures!! He is easy to spot and has His awesome dog Mikey with him. He can arrange any excursion you want and he will take you personally. Super amazing guy and knows so many people.
2) you should check out our 2 part series on our experiences we had while in Costa Rica. This will show you what and where we went to. This includes Luis taking us on a local, cultural tour to Coco Beach.
We ziplined, rode horseback, saw waterfalls, suspension bridges, river tour, hot springs, mid baths. And this is just a smidge of what there is to do.

Hi! I'm visiting in May and so excited but have a couple questions that you might be able to answer: what are the deal with the bands? ive heard that the hotel is super stingy if you loose it and there will be a fee to pay when getting another one. Do the bands separate adults from children or the different hotels? Also will they have a kids menu for the more picky adults I am traveling with lol thanks!

Regarding your questions. I cannot speak to how they are with lost bands. We didn’t lose ours and they seem to be very difficult to lose. They have to be stingy so people are not finding ways to sell or share.
The bands are different for each hotel. Keep in mind that only Palace guests are able to utilize the guanacaste restaurants pools etc. guanacaste guests cannot use the Palace side.
As far as kids menus, it didn’t seem like there were options. However, the buffet for example had ample variety with lots of “kids” favourites. The restaurants were item specific but would say there is at least one meal that kids and adults enjoy.

I really enjoyed your video. Right now my family is considering either the Palace or Guanacaste. Did you happen to walk through the other resort and can you please tell me your thoughts on it? I understand it's older (which is reflected in their rates) but there seems to be mixed feelings on its value. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I was there yesterday and today! I just left. I booked my stay for eight days! I’m sorry, but I’m not sure if this couple has a financial interest in this property, but I can’t believe we stayed at the same property! I booked Riu Palace! First off, the food was subpar! The Italian restaurant was terrible! The ziti was over cooked! The 24 hour lounge was ok. 3/10 I asked for a peaceful side of the resort I was given the ground level I was not happy with all the moths that are in the hallways from small to huge! I know we are in the rain forest so to speak, but….The room smelled of mildew! I saw a medium sized spider! I was terrified! I went up to the main lobby and asked to be moved! I went back to pack my bags! ANOTHER HUGE SPIDER!! I went screaming out into the hallway a very nice young man was walking by (stock boy) and helped me remove my bags and found the big spider under the sink and killed it for me! I was moved to the second level and I was getting my shower ready and opened the towel and there was a huge glob of hair!! Once again the room smelled of mildew and there was mold on the bathroom ceiling! Omg I flushed the toilet and it smelled like raw sewage! I gagged for ten minutes straight!!! You can take this review with a grain of salt because everyone don’t require the same level of cleanliness and quality as the next! Looking at this couple I’m really shocked by the first five minutes if their take! To each their own!

With regards to the beach, there are loungers for sure. I don’t think there are as many as you would find in places like Mexico, CR or Cuba. The beach itself is gorgeous, but we would have to be honest in saying if you are someone who spend most of your time on the beach, this wouldn’t be the location for you. You may want to consider the Caribbean coast instead or go much more south.
Don’t get us wrong, this resort is spectacular and you are immersed into its lush landscapes. The beach is something to see as well.

We didn’t have to be tested to arrive at the resort. We only needed to test prior to our return to Canada.
Our vaccine passport was enough to enter Costa Rica. We also had to complete Costa Rica’s online screening for record on their end.

As far as we know it was an option on both accounts. This was their 24 Hour option for those very reasons.
As mentioned in the video, we never had the opportunity to sit and enjoy it. We were to busy during the day and exhausted at night lol.
@@WhereToMagoo thank you as I'm a night snacker and also an early bird to go for walks and watch sun rises with the wife,it's also a good option that you can go next door the Riu Guanacacaste has a 24 hour sports bar but by all accounts from what I hear palace is miles better anyway but at least you get the option to use their pool and facilities whereas if you book for Riu Guanacacaste you can't visit palace.

Lol. You’ll be set then. You also have complimentary room service with the room you booked so you will have no issues.
I don’t remember seeing Diet Coke, but I am sure they can accommodate you by asking at the front desk.

As we travelled with Sunwing, a transfer was included. However we booked a private transfer just so we had more time to check in, space etc.
Check with your tour provider if you booked that way to see if your transfer is included. If you booked directly with Riu, I believe you are offered a transfer free of charge.

We booked our travel through Sunwing vacations. Within this, you can book private transfers if you do not want to travel with the included shuttle.
I believe you can go online and search for private transfers from Liberia airport and it will give you selections.

Absolutely! That’s of course if you are looking for an all-inclusive option.
Such a great place to meet people and enjoy everything it has to offer. Make sure you go see Luis on the beach and tell him Tony and Rachel from Where To Magoo sent you! Him and Mikey can take you on the best adventures. Super amazing guy also!

Was there a riu party when you were there? If so, what was the theme?
unfortunately at the time we were here, it was on the tale end of Covid. Riu resorts had cancelled big gatherings in the resorts for the time being. I would definetely say they have started up again such as the White Party.
How much cash would you recommend to bring to do the activities and give tips? Thanks!
Hey there!
It really depends on how many activities you plan on doing. If you watch our two adventure videos in Costa Rica, that was approximately $750 p/p total. It truly varies on what you do and where you are doing it.
As far as tips, we tipped 1 or 2 dollars where we went with the the exception of the bartenders and cleaning staff where we tipped a fair bit more as a whole. They took good care of us.
With the excursions, it’s up to you if you too or not. We based it on service etc.

Is all inclusive means the breakfast a, lunch and dinner inclusive
yes it does. this includes the a-la-cartes.
Did you find after the airport in Liberia if that is where you landed that this property is way far away from life?
The resort is about 45 minutes to an hour away. It is along the Pacific coast, but, you are 20 minutes away from Coco Beach, very cool town. We did a video on that as well, if you want to watch. Also, any excursions are well organized. I think the furthest we went, other than our 3 hour journey south for ziplining, was 90 minutes.

It would be hard for us to give you a fair comparison as we have not stayed next door. Just at the Palace.
What we can say is a few things we know. The Palace serves top shelf alcohol as apposed to domestic brands. There will also be a lot less families staying at the palace side compared to the Guanacaste.
The other pro about staying at The Palace is you have access to both resorts and what they offer. Those staying at the Guanacaste can only stay on their resort.
Sorry we cannot help any more than that. You will not be disappointed in making The Palace your choice!

How far is the resort from the airport?
Depending on how you are travelling but roughly 45 min to and hour.
Did you have to wear a mask on the resort?

The only time we needed our mask was walking to our rooms inside the building, getting seated at the restaurants, in the lobby at the front desk or getting to our seats at the bar. The theatre asked for it but most never did while watching.
Other than that you are free to roam. This was in December so may have changed.
You will not be disappointed.
What airport did you fly into?
We flew into Liberia. The transfer from Liberia to to Riu was approximately 45 min. This was a private transfer however, and not on a bus with other guests.
is it all adults?
Hello!
No, both resorts are open to all ages. Palace however seems to cater more towards the young adult to middle aged groups.
Is there a gym in the hotel?
Yes there is. It is located near the front of the property on the lower level. Great gym with with lots of options.

How strong are drinks are they quality branded ?

Our experience was the drinks were well delivered. The Palace side only has name branded, top shelf spirits etc. on the Guanacaste side it’s local brands.
I’m sure if you wanted them stronger, the bar staff would happily look after you.

We are looking for a Adults only hotel 5 star , can you recommend any that you may of visited 😀
To be very honest, we have not visited any adults only in our travels.
For Costa Rica, our bucket list includes the Gaia Hotel & Reserve. This is an incredible boutique style spot built within the red mountains. Not cheap, but highly recommend if you can make it work.
Is there alcohol at the room?
Hello Lacsacr. Yes there is. Difference between the Guanacaste and the Palace is quality of alcohol.
Guanacaste serves local brands. Palace serves premium brands.
Not to complain but I sure wish your Entertainment score included more than just the theater. No mention of anything other than the theater. No mention of live music, pool games, excersize classes, bike tours, water sports or anything really .
Please do not apologize. You are absolutely correct.

Seems like these resorts are isolated away from everywhere and there’s not much to do except at the resort and some excursions.

With Costa Rica, it’s about where you are and immersing yourself within it. The one thing about Costa Rica is that everything takes a bit to get to. You can stay in eco resorts or condo rentals and be in town if you want to be able to walk out your door and have restaurants, stores etc.

Coco Beach is only about 25 minutes away and very cool town. Liberia is about 40 minutes away and has everything in it including Walmart etc.
