Jason you’re the next in line for an NBA job
If I a Gm I’m calling Jason up for a coaching job…This guys knows his basketball
If lakers win a title it wont be out of the question.
I honestly feel like he’s gonna be the assistant coach for la🤣🤣🤣🤣
You know ball
I'd honestly trust Jason 10x more than Darvin Ham. I know it's a joke, but to be real, knowing basketball is not enough. Jason would be someone who needs experience in the league first. He communicates well but is more soft spoken and does not strike me as having an extremely strong personality or aura which are requisite 'talent' for an NBA coach, that JJ has.
Don't think there's enough popcorn, even in LA, for this.
That is wise and FUNNY!
Jason trying to hype himself up with this acquisition 🤣 JJ isn’t it man
How do you know that ❓
I usually don’t disagree with Jason but the “no matter which option you chose there’d be risk” just doesn’t fully encapsulate what people mean by risk. There will always be countless examples of coaches that fail because there’s obviously going to be more mediocre/bad coaches than good ones, but there’s also the added component that coaches don’t have a lot of control of their rosters, so a team might struggle under a coach but a different team might do really well with that same coach. My point being, even though it is always risky to hire an assistant coach, or another coach who’s only had mediocre teams, they at least have some level of experience coaching professional basketball and that experience means they have way more potential to be good than someone without experience. The closest thing I can think of in terms of teams that hired inexperienced coaches and had success is Steve Kerr and Eric Spoelstra, but even then, Steve Kerr was a very successful GM, and Spoelstra coached in Europe, and worked his way up in the Heat organization and had a long history with the team.
Redick has NOTHING. He’s coached what, a high school basketball team? He has no relationship with the Lakers organization, he’s never been a part of a team’s front office, and now we’re expecting him to coach Lebron James of all people? I’m not saying it’s impossible. JJ is clearly very smart and has a mind for the game, and of course he has experience as a player,
But so did Steve Nash
Right, people pretend like if there is risk, that means the risk is the same no matter what. That's ridiculous. You can mitigate risk with choosing smartly, just saying "there will always be risk" is such a cop-out. Why would you hire a coach with ~90% risk as opposed to a well established coach with maybe ~20% risk
@@user-zb8tq5pr4xThe issue is there were good candidates out there who have applied their basketball ideologies to a team’s roster but expecting the Lakers to value that seems impossible currently. They can’t identify/value actual elite coaching and weigh all these intangibles too highly. The floor can be extremely low with this hiring considering all the damn question marks, frustrating but hopefully the assistants can somewhat make up for it(doubt it).
@@thumpthumptv1651 The lakers are the only team that's run as a business. Hiring JJ, a big time podcaster with a large audience is nothing but a publicity move. They only want more jersey sales that's all.
@@user-zb8tq5pr4xit's not even jersey sales it's that the big baby wants his podcast buddy as coach because he'll do everything he wants. The baby will be coaching the team.

Mailbag question: Hi Jason, big fan from Western Australia here (seems like there’s always an Aussie in the comments), love your work. Have you ever thought about expanding the guests on the show? Not with other analysts or players but maybe some coaching staff? I guess they’d be guarded about their playbooks/strategies but I’d love to see a small piece around the logistics or leadership skills needed in the nba.
JJ is just quite literally the NBA version of Jason😂 hope Jason lands an NBA job one day 🤞🏼

La Lakers could have hired Kendrick Perkins and this guy would have said the same things😂😂 “inevitable”
This is the worse take you have had in some time. Every single hire, for every single job in the universe, is risky. However, some hires are more risky than others, and it’s usually due to lack of experience. Passion is never enough, and anyone coaching a pro sports team has passion in spades.
I wish you become a Coach in the NBA an kick ass.

Jason, Celtics fan here: I agree with you on your points. Y'know, I was a believer in Joe Mazzulla even early on--especially for his forward thinking, maniacal competitiveness and basketball smarts--thought his session with JJ showed their similarities in some ways. So yes, I think in some ways Mazzulla is an already-proven template for JJ as coach (along with Steve Kerr). Agree LeBron is the key--and I think he'll have LBJ's buy-in. I wish the Lakers luck, actually. Would LOVE to somehow see another Celtics-Lakers Finals before LeBron and AD move on (cue the McHale-Rambis clothesline pic).

Very biased perspective. Haven't heard of one person saying there are options with no risk. Every investment has risk involved. What ppl have been saying is the JJ route has the most risk out of all the options.
I think this will be an unmitigated disaster.
Jason has to be happy for JJ because he should gain alot of viewers from JJ's podcast lol

Mazzulla had the talent and competitiveness. Boston also surrounded him with vet coaches. It worked
AGREED! JJ was a fated eventuality and it feels like a really good development for Laker Nation. From basketball to business, it's gonna be a great relationship for JJ, LeBron and the Buss family.
Monty Williams is available, no way I take JJ over Monty
I love this. They deserve each other. Now he'll get to see Lwbron LIVE and his non defense playing self. Jj survives if he coaches qith Lebron as the 2nd or 3rd beat player. If not. Expect more underachieving....
I would like to see Jason with a young team wrecking havoc in the NBA
He has to get Rondo on his staff…those two galaxy brains working together will make the Lakers exponentially better. Despite injuries, last season’s team had the potential to be top 4 in conference but Ham let a lot of games get away because he didn’t actively coach during the game, a’la Mike Malone and Steve Kerr. JJ is letting nothing slide.
Jason Timpf next up for an NBA coaching staff position....just watch. So enjoy him now. He won't be around on youtube for much longer. What if JJ calls for a staff position with the Lakers? With his hire, nothing shocks me in the NBA anymore. (except the Jalen Brown Finals MVP) :)
Hey Jason, do you think the sixers should go for role players or star hunting? Also, what players in either category would fill their needs the best? Just to let you know, I appreciate your show a lot and as a relatively new nba fan(started watching in 2021 and started your show in the 22 playoffs) you’ve been a major influence on how I watch the game and how much I love it. Keep doing what you do, I love 2 Suns as well.
I love you Jason but you sound like you're trying to convince yourself. A four year deal is a death sentence. The Lakers are still not committed to a coach, the contract speaks volumes. I feel bad for JJ, I like him. Laker fan since 1965, never thought I would see the demise of the Lakers in my life time.
Jason, do you have aspirations to work for an NBA team in some form of coaching aspect? I'm sure there are a lot of teams that would value your insight in the film room and in the player development roll.
This was a comment I posted on another Laker video, so if it has parts that seem a bit off topic, that's why, but a lot of it touches on the topic discussed in this video. I'm not a coach, and I'm not familiar with all the terminology, but I understand basketball conceptually, and this is my opinion of the matter, being the Lakers on the offensive side of the ball:
Most coaches can design an offense with spot up shooters. It's why most of the offenses in the NBA are the same cookie cutter offense. An offense that generates high volume of open 3 pointers doesn't make it a good offense. Matter fact, some of the best offenses shot moderate amounts of 3 pointers, just enough to keep defenses honest, but alot had a good amount of movement to get open inside looks. Most of the good modern offenses have elements of some of the best old school offenses. Modern offenses have more stretch bigs, but stretch bigs doesn't make your offense better. In the early 2000s, the best offenses were Phil's Triangle, Pop's motion offense, whatever it was called, and the King's Princeton offense (when the Kings were elite). All of them were motion offenses, but they still ran Pick n Roll mixed in. Steve Kerr's motion offense is a Princeton hybrid, and Kerr played in Phil's Triangle as well, so he knew that motion offenses were for most part superior offenses. Before Steve Kerr, the 'Modern NBA' offense was the same as your typical old school PnR offense, with the only difference being your PF was a stretch 4. D'antoni was the leading inventor of this, but in the end, it was still just a PnR (pick n roll) offense, and PnR gets countered by switching everything. Motion offense punish over switching / rotations better than any offense, and it's why teams that had not just PnR offense, but also a motion offense, were able to form dynasties. So Steve Kerr's offense became the poster boy for the 'modern NBA', but most teams didn't really understand why the Warrior's offense was so good. Most people just thought...they shoot a lot of 3s, so if we shoot a lot of 3's, we will also have success. What they did not understand is that the Warriors were able to consistently get good looks for their best players, which happened to be elite 3 point shooters. Most teams that chuck a lot of 3s, do it because any player on their team has an open look, even if they are the 3rd to 5th best player in a unit. This leads to defenses being able to force kick out passes, and role players being tasked with keeping defenses honest, and the star players would either lose their rhythm, or take some rough shots in order to try to maintain it. The Warriors motion offense was able to get open 3 point looks for their stars who the opposing defense was targeting, which is opposite of PnR heavy offenses, which the 3 pointers are most kick outs to players the defense is not targeting. This allowed Curry and Klay (also KD), so not just provide spacing, but also keep their rhythm by not being taken out of the play. This meant that it wasn't just the Warriors taking 35+ 3 pointers a game, but over half of those 3 pointers were coming from their star players. You can't say the same thing of PnR heavy teams, who's stars have to kick out to role players, who shoot the majority of those 3s. Most of those role players do not have ice in their veins, and are not dependable most times, or they would at least be fringe stars. So the Warriors motion offense not only had a high quantity of 3s, but the most superior quality of 3s. So most of these so called 'modern offenses' are actually not optimal modern offenses. The best 'modern' offense are actually not fully reliant on running PnR, and you'll here things like, the 5 out or 4 out motion offense, and so teams that are running motion offenses are the success stories of the 'modern offense' even though there is nothing modern about a motion offense, because they have been used for decades. The Triangle is more of a 3 out, with emphasis on post players, which is what I think the Lakers are actually suited for from a personnel perspective, so I really don't think the Lakers should be forcing themselves to get certain personnel just to chuck more 3s. They should be focusing on implementing an offense that makes the best use of their 2 superstars, which is an offense based more on inside out play rather than outside in play. The Lakers had offensive issues in the 2nd half against the Nuggets in the playoff series, because they were only optimized for PnR offense. The Lakers did have a 5 out motion offense in play, but it didn't work against the Nuggets, because the Lakers don't have the players to optimize the 5 out, meaning they ran a poor man's version of it, and that's why they struggled. The Lakers were better off running a 4 out, like a Princeton, which they ran in Darvin Ham's first year. Matter fact, I think the 5 out is not the best motion offenses have to offer, because you are relying on someone having to beat their man off the dribble to get the ball rolling, because there is no one at the elbow or in the paint threatening the defense. The defense has everyone in front of them, which makes it easy to see everything. So now for some past coaches, when they talked about modernizing the Lakers offensively, I knew they wouldn't last long, because they had a misunderstanding of the 3 point shooting and what it does for spacing, but to be fair, while Vogel and Ham started off thinking about shooting more 3s, ultimately they found out the Lakers were better when they shot less 3s, and just attacked more, because that's what their stars do well. If the Lakers bring anymore shooters in, those shooters are likely role players, and even Trae Young, if they get him, is more of an attacker than 3 point shooter in terms of efficiency. So don't go running an offense that needs shooting and perimeter footspeed to open things up, because your two best stars, who are your reliable ones, don't do that. This was the Laker's issue that last couple of years; running an offense catered more towards shooting, and when LBJ or AD were forced to pass out, the win condition became our role players knocking down 3s, when while it should contribute to winning, shouldn't be our win condition. We needed an offense that can get AD and LBJ their best spots at most times, so that defenses aren't forcing us to take 3 pointers to win games. LBJ having an open 3 pointer for a game winner in game 2 vs the Nuggets, is not a sign of optimal design for our stars. The fact that AD just got doubled all the time, and the only answer was to kick out to role players was not the answer. Role players are very important and have to hit shots, but the answer to one star getting countered should be the other star punishing the counter. The Triangle offense would allow the Lakers to do this. The offense the Lakers were running allowed AD and LBJ to get countered at the same time, and the role players had to be the counter punch, but because they are role players after all, you cannot rely on them to come through most of the time. So when I heard that JJ wants to modernize our offense, I shook my head, because Ham was running modernized offense, just wasn't the right one. However, because I heard AD wanted 3-4 players always in motion, and I didn't hear anything about chucking more 3s in order to be modern, I gained some hope that JJ might just do fine. I'll hold my judgment until I hear his press conference tomorrow. Just to clarify, I'm not against shooting offense, but I'm strongly in favor of playing the offense that fits your stars rather than forcing an offense on a team just because another team, who has different personnel, plays the offense so well. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SKIN A CAT...remember that.
Who do you think are the biggest name players that may be on the move besides Paul George? OG? Kuzma? The Chicago roster? Cavs? Nets? And do you think the Thunder have made their off-season move(s) for the summer with the addition of Caruso?
“Why would he give up his Cush media job to be scrutinized?” For the bread bruh
Mailbag Question: With the new reports on Brook López what do you think about a trade centered around him and Rui?
Brook Is a good shooting big that can space for LeBron and AD and Rui can play the 4 next to Giannis at the 5 and have the more versatile defense Doc Rivers wants.
One other point to why JJ might be successful is the track record of role players turned coaches. More often than not it’s the role players that make better future coaches because they understand how to play with superstars and they know what role players need to do to be successful in different offenses . I’m hopeful JJ can put together a good team offense and defense system, and more importantly, manage lineups and player dynamics
I don’t understand why lakers can’t hire proven coaches. I get why some teams need to take chances but weird when it is the lakers
Idk the last time i saw a player and a coach be legitimate friends

MAILBAG QUESTION: Jason, I have a different mindset with the J.J. Reddick hire. Basketball I.Q. matters, we’ve seen 1st time NBA coaches succeed because of this. How much do you think that J.J.’s Duke background/influence under Coach K for 4 years and 15+ years experience will influence what he teaches to the current players on this roster and his approach overall?
lack of experience is not an issue. Success with first year coaches is more the current trend.
Good point about the risk with any hire
I hope that JJ can withstand the pressure of being the LAL coach. I like him a lot and I am a Lakers fan, but I know how toxic the environment is. Furthermore, now the place for the best basketball podcaster/analyst is up for grabs and Jason, you are the frontrunner as far as I'm concerned!

i'm seeing a lot of negativity and pessimism toward this hire but I'm optimistic and think it will go well. I think Bron could help mitigate one of the concerns in players respecting and allowing themselves to be coached by a young, green coach. Kind of like with Brady and Bellicheck, if Bron buys in and allows himself to be coached by JJ that might make it easier for other players to do the same.
Totally respect JJ’s ambition here ..
My assumption is that JJ will be mainly focused on the tactical and lineup side of the game while LeBron focuses on keeping his teammates in line.

Main issue for the Lakers is their front office.
The risk part is mostly about that JJ is completely unproven as a coach, it could go catastrophically wrong is mostly what people are pointing out whilst a assistant coach or former head coach doesn't have as low of a floor (not as high of a ceiling) its MORE of a risk relative to other hiring options

Hi Jason, what do you think the Celtic's chances are to become the NBA's next dynasty? I'll admit I'm a C's fan but I really do believe their going to win at least one more over the next 4 or so years. Bias aside I think the case for this is simple. Like you've been saying for a while now the East is significantly easier to win than the West, and the best competition within the conference (imo Milwaukee, Philly, & Miami) are aging. Secondly the Celtic's FO is probably the best in the league. If Jrue ages poorly over the course of his contract, or the KP injury bug continually flairs up at the worst times, I trust this FO to make the right moves to build around Tatum and Brown. And if nothing else, we're one of the only contenders that still has most of their picks going forward.
Not all risk is the same, man.
What's gonna happen to the MInd the Game podcast? That's what I'm worried about.
This is the illusion of sophistication
The only NBA coach that LeBron had that was as smart as him was Eric Spoelstra. Until now. I think this will be a beautiful marriage of minds. I hope the Front Office is ready to make some moves to accommodate better basketball.
