Bronny James was literally ranked 38-72 on every big board right before the draft yet ppl yelling Nepotism when he was drafted 55 in a horrific draft (my pacers b2b picks at 49/50 were also 50-70 on big boards). Also was McDonald’s All American (had 15, 5, 2 steals, 5 threes in the game), was good at Nike Hoops summit practices, had moments for USA basketball, and in May 2023 (before cardiac arrest kept him out for 5 months into freshman season!) was 10th on Givony’s 2024 mock and 13th on CBS sports mock.
He also had 6th best vertical at combine (40.5 inch is elite), 2nd best 3P shooting drills (19/25), great interviews (from what I read).
Forget his name being Bronny James if that exact same prospect was drafted 55 in what’s called one of the worst drafts ever, NO ONE would say it was a reach they would say “decent to late round flier in late 2nd in historically weak draft”.
I also didn’t mention he obviously has great genes.
I see his ceiling as Avery Bradley, Derrick Fisher, Lindsey Hunter, Gary Payton III type player. All of these guys were picked around late first to undrafted (Gary Payton III also good genes). I also see a little TJ McConnell who was also undrafted.
AJ Johnson averaged 2.9 PPG while also less apg rbg spg bpg then Bronny and went 23rd to Bucks. Peyton Watson out of UCLA was 30th pick to Nuggets after doing less than Bronny in his freshman yr. That wasn’t nepotism that was simply drafting based on traitors and future!
Most guys mathematically drafted 2nd round, but especially 45-60 range never pan out to even good role player so odds are Bronny doesn’t pan out, but this notion it was nepotism alone why he was drafted (AT 55 in a bad draft!) is just illogical when you just say out loud:
*McDonalds All American who was top22-32 in his class (granted not a very good class) and was top4 player in that McDonald’s All American game.
*Great combine testing in athleticism + 3P shooting.
    *Great genes
*Was projected 10-20 in 2024 mock back in May 2023 BEFORE his ❤️ issue.
*Heart issue that kept him out 5 months has to be considered in the context of why he struggled at USC as freshman as does the fact the team was a mess overall. Collier also fell to 29 and was much worse then ppl thought he’d be too so part of this could also be USC was a mess.
I get ppl hate LeBron, but it’s important that you’re objective ppl. If he was drafted at 17 (even in a real bad draft) I would completely agree it was dumb AF with Nepotism, but drafted at 55 in a horrid draft when he was 38-72 on every big board out there, former McDonalds all American means he was a legit prospect to take flier on in 2nd round.

It's kind of a straw man argument unless you're naming specific people about nepotism. Because in Lebron situation I don't really care, but in all the other ones, it kinda is crazy. At least Lebron's kid is on the fringe. And was a top recruit at a high school. And just because it's rampant and the league doesn't make it okay.

However, I don't have much of a problem with what LBJ has done, all things considered. I think the specifics of the situation make this reasonably defensible--not least because 1) he's probably good enough and 2) as stated, he's actually a pretty good comp for something the Lakers NEED right now. Look, I'm a C's fan and love dumping on LeBron (although I respect him), and I don't think this is a big deal at all.

Welcome to the Klutch/Laker Channel. Just kidding. The Lakers will make more money on Bronny jerseys than the cost of drafting/signing him. NBA teams have 18-man rosters, you can keep him on the 15 without it ever being a problem.
In fact, I'll be rooting hard for Bronny to have a nice Summer League (which we all know means nothing) so the LaLaCircus pressure on JJ is intense Day 1.

I think the nepotism conversation is a bit of a strawman. No one should me mad that Lebron used his pull to get Bronny in the league. That's not the issue. The issue is how MUCH coverage Bronny gets. No one can confidently say that any family member of an all time great got this much coverage. That's the issue. Seth Curry, nope. Thanasis? Nope. Aaron Holiday? Nope. Mark Gasol? Nope. And some of those players worked quite a bit harder to establish themselves, despite the name association. Bronny can't help who his parents are, which is why I'm not mad at it. But, saying that people are upset at nepotism is disingenuous imo.
I think all this coverage is going to put quite a bit of pressure on the boy and hopefully he can handle it.

A late 2nd round pick is a dice roll, the only thing teams are concerned about is maybe getting lucky and stumbling upon a diamond in the rough. It's not like the Lakers were passing up on a future superstar to select Bronny; they passed up on other bench warmers and future g-league dropouts. Which is why nobody should care, but it's also why it's ridiculous to say he'll help the Lakers. Between this, and "the bubble Lakers were the best Championship team in the last six years", you're really destroying your credibility. It's one thing to like a team, it's another to be so blinded by your own bias that nobody can trust your analyses.

Bronny James was literally ranked 38-72 on every big board.

In the NBA, the only place nepotism is visible is on the court and as you argued, every win matters for the post season, if Bronny can’t help and another player could, this is negative nepotism. Nepotism on the draft yeah, but winning is far more meritocratic. If the Lakers wasted a pick on appeasing 40-year-old Lebron, they wasted a potential chance to get better. It might've also kept Lebron from leaving. We'll probably never know what he would've done if someone else drafted him. And it was a second-rounder so I doubt it'll matter that much. But the Lakers make a lot of dumb front-office moves. If they weren't the Lakers and stars didn't want to play their, they'd be in much deeper shite.

I don’t really care about the “fair” aspect to be honest. I’m happy for any player that gets an opportunity, plus he got drafted 55th anyways. I just don’t know that this is going to be the best option for Bronny…
It’s not my kid, so it’s not my place to say, BUT, If it was MY kid? I’d think of it like this: if Bronny is good enough to play in the NBA, he almost certainly will be good enough after another year playing at college, and Rich Paul with his influence will still be able to get Bronny drafted whether lebron is still playing or not. Another year of college will allow Bronny to showcase how good he truly is, without being severely limited from his heart attack, and if he does look better, that will dramatically improve his chances of getting drafted (and getting drafted higher). If Bronny ISN’T good enough? Well if he spent another year of college and just wasn’t the same player before his health emergency, he could still finish college and move in another direction (and he could keep trying to improve at basketball too!) Now, if Bronny isn’t good enough on the Lakers, and doesn’t improve, he’ll basically retire when Lebron does, or at the very least he’ll float around the nba for a year or two and then get dropped. Now his options are to play overseas or go back to school, which, if Lebron doesn’t retire for another 3 years, will be a very hard life adjustment for a young kid.
Again, I’m not a parent, let alone his parents, so it’s not my place to say. I’m in my early twenties and just imagining if I was in Bronny’s shoes and I honestly am concerned for him. I’m rooting for him!
