A good entry certification is the IT Fundaments and Cloud+. It is essential that you learn about the cloud because that's where the world of IT is going.

I agree that self teaching and learning on UA-cam will help a long way as a person who have no prior experience with I.T., that is how I have started as well, through using virtualization and messing around with administrative tools. Why pay for free knowledge?! I always figured it would help me along the way since I hardly had any hands on and have just book knowledge from my admin I.T. management degree with no certifications. When I first entered the interview for the entry level intern, they have asked me a lot of basic to advance questions, such as what is active directory and what is it used for? How do you add a domain? What are group policies? What is Hyper-V and how do you mount a image for deployment? How do you use these tools? Without getting the hands-on, i wouldn't have known how to answer these questions. This have saved me !

As a 2nd line engineer I use virtual box with a domain lab and two domain controllers and purposely break and fix them. Also chuck the vms into GNS3 and network them into a Cisco router and switch. You can learn all sorts of things ,including how to set them up into vlans etc. Can't reccom highly enough to someone starting out. A pfsense router in your lab is also great if you don't wish to use GNS3 with a bridged virtual network adapter if you need he vms to have internet access
I've watched a few of your videos now and i was wondering if you'd be able to tell me specifically what kind of Maths i would need to learn for IT? I won't get accepted from my bridging course straight into my degree unless i do some extra Maths subjects. But i've never been good with Maths and i don't know where to start. I need Maths to get into my degree, but i want to focus on software development and game development.

yes, i am looking into volunteer at an older folks residents helping with tech support. Their main focus of what they want to learn the most is share point and one drive and zoom. I have more of a background using apple computers and products like photoshop so i think this could be a fun learning curve for us both entering windows.
also, i love helping people and i like older people very much. I agree with almost everything u say in your videos. Sadly, many young people don't want to volunteer and i get it but we all have to start somewhere

Certificates are a great option if you want to skip pointless General Education courses to get a “degree” it all boils down to knowing the ins and outs on what field in I.T you want to get into and wether or not you know how to do the job/field you focus on

Check on craigslist for cheap equipment. Ask friends and family if they have old computers they dont want anymore. Chances are they might. Even if they are 10 years old. Learn them.

I earned a Bachelors in Finance because I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do in life. Figured it would be useful life information and a degree at the very least. I'm now almost 3 years out of college and I've been working at a financial firm for 2 years now. Ive always loved computers and technology and sort of act as the in house IT person for my company when anything arises, solving all sorts of little issues coworkers have. Sometimes it sucks being the only person with any knowledge of computers (because my actual duties are not IT), but I enjoy solving other people's problems. I'm starting to think IT would be a great path for me so I bought an A+ cert book to read through and possibly get certified. Still debating, so my question is: with an unrelated degree and no actual experience with an IT company, would you recommend my change in path or will it be very difficult to jump start a career in IT? Edit: basically, more formal schooling is not really an option for me. I got fed up colleges and the whole process in general. Plus the cost side. I'd prefer not to go for any other/further degrees! I'd shoot to go the self taught route.
The fact that you have a degree period will be EXTREMELY beneficial for you. If you put an I.T. certification behind that and tie in experience you can start working in I.T. with little to no issues.
I.T. Career Questions I appreciate the response. I think I'm gonna go for it! I wish I had some actual credible IT position experience on my resume but really all I can add is the fact that every job I've ever held has asked me to do IT related tasks once they realized I'm capable. I never have a problem helping out, in fact, I enjoy figuring out solutions and solving problems. Will I be okay studying from the 8th edition of the Comptia book (it was $15 used)? In college, the textbook market was a scam and one or two editions behind always got the job done.
I know this is a month late. You don't necessarily need to open a computer to learn and understand the hardware. However, it does greatly help to be able to see the hardware as well as to have hands-on experience with it. Look at it this way. If you're studying to be a car mechanic, but you never actually work on a car, what good will that do you? You may have a lot of book knowledge of how an engine works and what all of the components inside of an engine do, but you won't have the valuable hands-on experience that goes into fixing cars. Computers are the same way. You don't need to be a PC expert. Not many people truly understand how computers work at the component level. If you happen to have an old PC laying around that you don't mind experimenting with, use that to learn. Take it apart completely and put it back together. You may want to take pictures of where the components go for reference. You don't need anything fancy or functional; bonus points if you can get it to work again. I can't post links on here since YT will delete my comment, but there are tons of resources out there. There's a channel and website called explaining computers. He has a webpage with what the components are in a PC. Its from several years ago but the core information is still pretty much the same nowadays. IT is an extremely broad field. There isn't just 1 way to get started, but it does help to at least start with the basics of how computers work. You can branch of from there depending on what interests you. There are many great resources out there; you just have to find something that works best for you.
I love IT, but I am so bad at autodidactism. Essentially it's like only push ups to improve upper body, but I'm missing the part where I have to work on legs, core, and flexibility to be fit.
You don't need anything fancy. I would go with at least an Intel Core i5 CPU from the past few generations (or AMD equivalent) and at least 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD (preferably 1 TB). If you don't want to spend a lot of money, look into used Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. They're pretty good. IT is an extremely broad field, so there isn't just 1 suggestion. Your requirements will be different, for instance, if you want to get into machine learning/AI compared to basic programming or systems administration (like servers and networks).

Gil Fernando & I have a feeling it's only going to get better, with the advancement of technology comes new threats & bad guys who'd want to do severe "Cyberharm" to a community or on a global level as well. Plus, the demand from local, federal, military, private, etc. I could go on though im sure you get the idea.
Of course. Cyber security degree is what you want. Forget about other fields in IT. It is what I am doing. I only have two more semesters to go to graduate with my Bachelor's degree.Cyber security is beautiful and you can work anywhere. Any company needs a cyber security professional due to information security. Go ahead and do it and it will reward you. It is not difficult. This semester I am taking classes like cryptography, penetration testing, and basics of Forensics!

im 26 and self-taught but I'm having issues even getting in the door with internships and jobs. my resume only has 2 hardware tech internships from when I graduated hs (no cs degree) in 2010 and a work history gap since 2011. for the past 6 years I've been dealing with chronic pain, now I get monthly treatments and am asymptomatic. during that time I learned as much as possible and used studying IT as a coping skill. i am passionate about IT and enjoy learning new things every day. I can understand why no employer would even consider me a candidate with essentially no education or work history. How can I get myself out of this situation? :/
ash G. Im 26, PC Enthusiast, Gamer and generally into tech. Im kind of, for lack of a better word, glad to have come across your comment because I have a somewhat similar story. HS graduate, got into Medical school, but dropped out, started working office administrative jobs for about 7 years running now. Lately, I've been thinking of getting into the field of tech, get certified, self study and eventually get a job where Im passionate about, instead of the "office jobs" I had over the years. Oh, I also got diagnosed with a disease that I have to take care of, prescription meds, visits to the hospital and what not.
Have you considered doing consulting and freelancing? Or even volunteering somewhere? When I was a fresh grad, I had a very hard time getting into the field. I started doing consulting for friends, family, and associates. I got them to give me references and I gained more experience in break/fix and end-user support. There are plenty of paths in IT to take. If you considered development, there are hundreds of projects to complete and use them for freelancing to get more experience.
I worked with a gentleman who was in the coast guard, and started out in patient coordination. We worked together in level 1 support. He got A+ certified and moved onto level 2 support where he's working on his CCNA. I don't think he has a degree.
almost finished with my AAS in computer networking and and haven't learned shit except how to subnet. my internet went down at the house and I used Google and UA-cam and still couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
I don't agree with interning at all. Let me explain: I once interned for a legal office. I didn't learn shit. All I learned was how to collate papers. That's all they ever let me do. That and order them lunch. I few of my friends interned as well for various professions including I.T. They all got screwed doing tasks that wasn't related to their field, and not getting paid for it. They ALL got screwed. I mean sure, they were able to put it on a resume but they all told me they didn't learn a damn thing and neither did I. Time is the one thing we can spend and NEVER get back. So yes, in theory being an intern is a smart move, but it entirely depends on if you get a spot with an employer who actually respects you, respects what you are doing, and is willing to teach you a thing or two. Otherwise, you losing money, and most of all, losing time. Choose wisely, and research well.
why... lol thats the worst... Legal offices are the worst place for that. You should have tried for a non for profit or a school or a community center. Actually a community center is the best route to go or look into tech labs. idk what your state offers but sounds like a shit experience. i am sorry dude
Good thing interns get paid. If you aren't getting paid hopefully you're volunteering some of your time And working somewhere else. That experience from interning is extremely valuable.

I earned a Bachelors in Finance because I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do in life. Figured it would be useful life information and a degree at the very least. I'm now almost 3 years out of college and I've been working at a financial firm for 2 years now. Ive always loved computers and technology and sort of act as the in house IT person for my company when anything arises, solving all sorts of little issues coworkers have. Sometimes it sucks being the only person with any knowledge of computers (because my actual duties are not IT), but I enjoy solving other people's problems.
I'm starting to think IT would be a great path for me so I bought an A+ cert book to read through and possibly get certified. Still debating, so my question is: with an unrelated degree and no actual experience with an IT company, would you recommend my change in path or will it be very difficult to jump start a career in IT?
Edit: basically, more formal schooling is not really an option for me. I got fed up colleges and the whole process in general. Plus the cost side. I'd prefer not to go for any other/further degrees! I'd shoot to go the self taught route.
The fact that you have a degree period will be EXTREMELY beneficial for you. If you put an I.T. certification behind that and tie in experience you can start working in I.T. with little to no issues.

I wish I had some actual credible IT position experience on my resume but really all I can add is the fact that every job I've ever held has asked me to do IT related tasks once they realized I'm capable. I never have a problem helping out, in fact, I enjoy figuring out solutions and solving problems.
Will I be okay studying from the 8th edition of the Comptia book (it was $15 used)? In college, the textbook market was a scam and one or two editions behind always got the job done.

I know this is a month late. You don't necessarily need to open a computer to learn and understand the hardware. However, it does greatly help to be able to see the hardware as well as to have hands-on experience with it. Look at it this way. If you're studying to be a car mechanic, but you never actually work on a car, what good will that do you? You may have a lot of book knowledge of how an engine works and what all of the components inside of an engine do, but you won't have the valuable hands-on experience that goes into fixing cars. Computers are the same way. You don't need to be a PC expert. Not many people truly understand how computers work at the component level.
If you happen to have an old PC laying around that you don't mind experimenting with, use that to learn. Take it apart completely and put it back together. You may want to take pictures of where the components go for reference. You don't need anything fancy or functional; bonus points if you can get it to work again. I can't post links on here since YT will delete my comment, but there are tons of resources out there. There's a channel and website called explaining computers. He has a webpage with what the components are in a PC. Its from several years ago but the core information is still pretty much the same nowadays.
IT is an extremely broad field. There isn't just 1 way to get started, but it does help to at least start with the basics of how computers work. You can branch of from there depending on what interests you. There are many great resources out there; you just have to find something that works best for you.

What's a good labtop to get for learning IT?
You don't need anything fancy. I would go with at least an Intel Core i5 CPU from the past few generations (or AMD equivalent) and at least 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD (preferably 1 TB). If you don't want to spend a lot of money, look into used Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. They're pretty good.

Gil Fernando & I have a feeling it's only going to get better, with the advancement of technology comes new threats & bad guys who'd want to do severe "Cyberharm" to a community or on a global level as well. Plus, the demand from local, federal, military, private, etc. I could go on though im sure you get the idea.

I only have two more semesters to go to graduate with my Bachelor's degree.Cyber security is beautiful and you can work anywhere. Any company needs a cyber security professional due to information security. Go ahead and do it and it will reward you. It is not difficult. This semester I am taking classes like cryptography, penetration testing, and basics of Forensics!

im 26 and self-taught but I'm having issues even getting in the door with internships and jobs. my resume only has 2 hardware tech internships from when I graduated hs (no cs degree) in 2010 and a work history gap since 2011. for the past 6 years I've been dealing with chronic pain, now I get monthly treatments and am asymptomatic. during that time I learned as much as possible and used studying IT as a coping skill. i am passionate about IT and enjoy learning new things every day. I can understand why no employer would even consider me a candidate with essentially no education or work history. How can I get myself out of this situation? :/
ash G. Im 26, PC Enthusiast, Gamer and generally into tech. Im kind of, for lack of a better word, glad to have come across your comment because I have a somewhat similar story. HS graduate, got into Medical school, but dropped out, started working office administrative jobs for about 7 years running now. Lately, I've been thinking of getting into the field of tech, get certified, self study and eventually get a job where Im passionate about, instead of the "office jobs" I had over the years. Oh, I also got diagnosed with a disease that I have to take care of, prescription meds, visits to the hospital and what not.
Have you considered doing consulting and freelancing? Or even volunteering somewhere? When I was a fresh grad, I had a very hard time getting into the field. I started doing consulting for friends, family, and associates. I got them to give me references and I gained more experience in break/fix and end-user support.
There are plenty of paths in IT to take. If you considered development, there are hundreds of projects to complete and use them for freelancing to get more experience.
I worked with a gentleman who was in the coast guard, and started out in patient coordination. We worked together in level 1 support. He got A+ certified and moved onto level 2 support where he's working on his CCNA. I don't think he has a degree.

I don't agree with interning at all. Let me explain:
I once interned for a legal office. I didn't learn shit. All I learned was how to collate papers. That's all they ever let me do. That and order them lunch. I few of my friends interned as well for various professions including I.T. They all got screwed doing tasks that wasn't related to their field, and not getting paid for it. They ALL got screwed. I mean sure, they were able to put it on a resume but they all told me they didn't learn a damn thing and neither did I. Time is the one thing we can spend and NEVER get back. So yes, in theory being an intern is a smart move, but it entirely depends on if you get a spot with an employer who actually respects you, respects what you are doing, and is willing to teach you a thing or two. Otherwise, you losing money, and most of all, losing time.
Choose wisely, and research well.
