  • How to replace lower ball joints on a first gen toyota tundra. The process is essentially identical for all 2000-2006 Toyota tundras. The common LBJ failure is catastrophic and should be addressed with regular maintenance and OEM quality parts torqued to proper spec. Lower Ball joints are not hard to remove and install, and the peace of mind is worth the heftier price of OEM parts. Check out the links below for more information, and thanks for watching!

    Seems like a great maintenance item to get out of the way with a new, used, Tundra. There are some things you can pinch pennies on, but this seems like a good one to go OEM if you can afford it. Thanks for sharing!

      Ya! the OEM part lasted 200k miles so no reason to switch it up, especially on a part with as catastrophic of failure event as these have.

    I was in Toyotas parts department getting some things and the clerk reminded me of the recalls and when and what Toyota dealer replaced the lbj’s and passenger air bag on my 03 2 wheel drive SR5 extended cab. I was considering replacing them since it just hit 100k but now I won’t have to.

    Don't have a Tundra but I've felt the pain of things like tie rods not wanting to come out. You've more patience than me, Mr. Hammer would usually make an appearance in that situation.

      I think the tie rod puller is a better solution. Easier to work with and more of a guaranteed result imo, less chance for damage.

      @@208Tyler You're right about that. Now that I think about it most of the time I've done these I'm didn't that same tie rod end back in. For preserving the part it makes total sense.

    Thank you so much dude I had no idea this was a problem on these trucks!! I recently purchased a 2006 tundra access cab model with 95k miles. I got it when it had 74k miles on it. Previous owner treated it very well and so do I. When do you think I should begin considering replacing my LBJs? I’m assuming the set currently on the truck are still factory.

      I would go ahead and replace them now. Just got peace of mind, get it done when you can. Then you’ll be good for a long time

    Where did you get the 2002 diagram? Why are the torque specs different one year to the next for the same part. I have a 2002 and accidentally broke a bolt because I looked at the wrong year diagram. Just wondering where I can find the one for 2002.

    Out of curiosity, does the tundra have the same exact ball joint number as the tacoma? It looks like the tundra ball joints could fit in a tacoma tbh

      @208Tyler Dang, that sucks. They look identical, and sadly, the tundra has more upgrade options for ball joints than the tacoma, that's why I was wondering but I appreciate it

      I had to look up the hardware for a while.
      It will depend on your model year, Toyota should be able to help you if you provide a VIN

      No. They’d have to redesign it to fix the ultimate problem. But ball joints are a wear item and replacing them every 60-100k isn’t a big deal.

    Maybe I missed it, but at what mileage do you think these should be replaced? I have a 2000 4Runner with 185k. I’m the second owner and I don’t believe they’ve ever been replaced.

      60-100k miles depending on how hard you are on them!

    I need a second opinion here my mechanic told me the ball joints dont have any issues do i still have to replace them?

      I’d stick to getting them replaced every 60k to 100k miles, no matter what.

    Im definitely getting conflicting info online about the torque specs for the 4 bolts that go up into the knuckle. I have an 02 2wd and torqued them to 61 ft lbs with red lock tight per another video. The sheet you showed says 37 ft lbs i believe.... is that going to be dangerous for me to leave? This really has me stressed. A book thay someone posted online says 59 ft lbs. I have no idea what to trust

      There are different specs for different model years and designs.
      You need to find the torque specs for your model year. If you have identical hardware to my truck, which is possible (00-02 trucks share a lot of parts), then you likely should be using the same torque specs I used.

      @208Tyler What did you torque those 4 bolts to on yours? Also where would I find a reliable source for torque specs? There seems to be so many dyi charts that people have made

      I just remembered, I have screenshots at the end of this video. 2002 is 37 ft lbs.
      Otherwise, one of the tundra FB groups hosts FSM pdf’s.

    Man, you can get the torque specs wrong easily if you don’t pay attention to the “protector and no protector” torque specs.
