RockAuto currently (June 2023) has Quick Steer ball joints for my Sequoia that are the 555 type for only $26, listed as "economy level", but they have Moog and others for twice as much that look just like the crappy one in the video! 555 is no OE rebranded factory doesn’t have grease fitting. There is a reason why some have it and some don’t. Factory have a teflon design while 555 is metal on metal that’s why it has the grease zig fitting. 555 also doesn’t have a coating it will rust quick so paint it.

Great video. I learned that Moog has gone to shit with a lot of their parts months ago. I just bought a pair of lower ball joints for my 1st gen Tacoma 4x4 from Mevotech. Their "X-Factor" series, that uses REAL sintered steel bearings, high quality boots, and heavy duty castings. I haven't installed them yet, so I was able to compare them to the parts in this video. The Mevotech part much more resembles the 555 part in every way: near identical: the casting thickness/shape, the lower stamped steel cover, the rubber boot ( blue in color, & connected with stainless steel rings at both the top & bottom of the boot, it blows away the boot on the cheap part in this video ), a temporary protective cover for the boot that is kept in place by the castle nut during installation, even a grease fitting. It is much better vs the cheap part you're showing in this video, I compared them very carefully. So I am definitely pleased with the Mevotech parts. I ordered them from Rock Auto. They are however manufactured in China and have the black powder coating, but Mevotech has already stated that their inspectors make sure all materials, castings, even manufacturing & assembly is done to their strict spec's. Their X-Factor series of parts carry the logo "overbuilt for durability", and all use the blue rubber boots. Mevotech has a good website, lots of videos showing how their parts are high quality, plus a customer support phone number. Mevotech ( a Canadian company that does their own research & development ) also has a line of these parts that are even heavier duty. I forget the name of the series, but the rubber boots are light green in color. I see individuals and professional mechanics/shops installing & recommending Mevotech X-Factor ( blue rubber boots ) series and their ultra HD series ( green rubber boots ) all over youtube, and most of them are NOT affiliated with Mevotech in any way. Neither am I. Just thought I would share this info.

I know this is a couple of years old now, but that black Moog part is more of an equivalent to the OEM LBJ than the silver part. The OE ball joints never had a grease fitting, so that is irrelevant.
I purchased 2 OEM Toyota LBJ's, dated 2021, for my 1st gen Tacoma (same as a 3rd gen 4runner) directly from the dealership, they look nearly identical to that black Moog ball joint. The only difference I can see is that the cap, that you think looks cheap, is painted black on the Toyota part I have. Same cap though, and physically looks the same as that black Moog ball joint.

It seems that Moog used to have good quality parts that matched OEM quality that was made either in the USA or Japan. From my experience recently, Moog is trying to increase profit margins by taking ALL manufacturing to China (unlike what they were doing before) probably because Federal-Mogul got greedy. If you order 2 of the exact same parts and they probably will ship from different fulfillment centers you most likely are going to receive an old stock USA or Japanese made part and or a new Chinese inferior part like in this video. It's sad to see a company like this that has and can produce good quality parts replace everything with this cheap bullshit that's garbage. Buy all the old stock while you still can and return all the new crap before going to the dealership and going broke.

The chinese manufactured ball joints pops out in less then a year..watch out !!.
I have had two ball joint failure on the land cruiser prado 90 series on the go. Both were china made, no zerk for greasing and on them. When the inside of the popped out b-joint were checked there was no plastic polymer seats inside either. ..its a terrible experience. The LC 90 series shares the same chassis/suspension as your 3rd gen 4runner.. with a little more beef added here and there. Go for the Sankei 555 (SB3806) non-greasable ones made in Japan. Its silver in colour and needs to be painted before fitting. The balls can be rotated with bare hands when new..feels buttery smooth. Three years now with it and mostly used hard on tough roads..not even a slight play at all yet.

Have not ordered Moog parts. I assume you do not have an option to order 555, rebuilt OEM, parts. Is this true? I'm with you, I would never put that black part on my vehicle, the casting is ALL WRONG! Also have a question. I experienced wobble in the front end, thought ball joints were bad. Jacked it up, and noticed the passenger wheel would turn then stick. Thought bad caliper. Removed caliper and still had the problem. hub would turn then stick, I mean almost like a binding. Now it's either the axle, or the transfer case. Any of you guys experienced this before? New one on me. Oh, and put new wheel bearings in last year, so I'm eliminating that, for now. Would like to know what ya think, thanks! One more thing, it's a 2007, gen 4.

Call me crazy but those black ones look just like OEM units; indeed, I cannot tell the difference. You indicated down below that Moog informed you that the black ones are their upgraded ones, unless I misunderstood what you meant. Maybe Moog is using the same jobber as Toyota now? It sure looks that way.

    • @FreedomCrawler

Correct. The black ones are the upgraded new versions they told me. It’s very well possible that they are using the same supplier as factory now.
