Documenting my ventures into vehicle modification and outdoor recreation. On here, my love for the outdoors and my fascination with vehicles go hand in hand.
You can expect informative videos showcasing the work I do, the vehicles I encounter, and the places I go. This channel is about doing what you can with what you have. I love to tinker with gear and daydream of unlimited budgets, but it's ultimately about making the time to travel, explore, and learn. Thanks for following along.

Why Aren't More People Saying This About Overlanding? (It's Not a Real Hobby)
The more time I spend car camping, the more I wonder if overlanding is even a real hobby? Seems as though all other outdoor hobbies end up overlanding and car camping as a normal means to be outside and do their other activities. So sure, overlanding can still be a stand alone hobby, but is it really good enough all by itself? Seems that driving forest service roads just for the sake of driving and finding a place to camp gets old pretty fast.

You are triggering all the folks that took out a 2nd mortgage for their "build"
There's not gonna be a lot of offroad trails? You've ever been to germany? It sucks.
Just found a 2000 tundra in bovil with 140k, but with these used car prices plus the money dump afterwards scares me, terrible time to be looking for a rig
I mean im a big car guy, and its always been the same for me since i was a child watching cool truck go through some mud (but not too much) is fun and if i get to be the guy driving that truck that i built from a 2008 toyota FJ cruiser idk it has a certain charm that makes that child come out even more. 😅
If a manufacturer makes a defective part, I refuse to keep slotting it in every X miles. Not going to reward them for making defective parts. I'll go aftermarket out of spite.
The parts not defective - the suspension design is poor and puts extra stress on the ball joint. Only swapping up to a uniball permanently fixes this issue. The OEM ball joint is the best ball joint by manufacturing quality and is not defective
Dig down in the ruts alot faster less rotating mass on smaller "under powered 4x4s". Put 500 plus hp to a 12 or 14.5 tire and it evens out.
"Overlanding" is about the last 100 yards. Subarus are cool...except for the last 100 yards of that road. Somebody already camping where you were headed? Drive 100 yards farther than their cars can. Tree in the road? Drive over it. Two feet of mud in a draw during spring? Drive through it. Found an awesome little spot that will cost you some paint to get to? Drive to it. It's about exploring. The first time you need to completely change your plans at 6PM because there is a brush pile in the middle of a road that was clear last year, you'll understand the need for 35s and 4WD. Or, you can spend another two hours driving around looking for another spot. Nothing wrong with camping in the same spots where everyone else does though. If you're into that. :)
I hate how frequently overlanders love to use the term "overlanding". Like dude, youre just camping in a truck. Cowboys are "overlanders" too. Just on horseback. Thru hikers are overlanders too. Just on foot. You're not special just because you can navigate rough terrain in a truck.
Overlanding is just glamping and people like gear
For the past 60 years I've known it as off-roading. The over-landing craze is born out of the fantasy they are eating at Outback and then leaving to drive with the 'roos. It's all virtue signaling.
First video in my recommended that I'm actually going to watch. Good camping with Steve vibes
I call it off roading and camping. Overlanding to me so traveling in your car. Safari tour style. You take your car across a continent. And you don’t need 72829238 LED lights to do that or a fucking steal bumper. When I got into it a couple months ago it was wondering why everyone with overland vehicles just dirges on fire roads in the weekend lol.
My personal opinion on over landing is that it’s a niche that gives people an outlet to gain acceptance or credit from others. It’s the “look what I can do” crowd. These over landers should factor how much time is actually spent in the woods and whether the sport is actually a practical one. But hey, to each his/her own on how they want to spend their money. Mine won’t be spent on bushings/ axles/ ball joints or ruined subframes
Many good points and a lot of Karen.
Trading my MG for a white Chrysler La Baron
confusing the industry with the concept. Overlanding can be done in any vehicle. Maybe best with a stock vehicle depending on your needs and locations.
We arent hating on the vehicle as much as the trends, I want a V6/v8 option, but they are taking that choice away from us, we are beinh forced into a turbo 4, and I love turbo 4 cylinder engines ... in a sporty car ... I dont want it in a truck.
Most people that have the free time, equipment, and fitness level to be out hiking and camping are rich, and most rich people are awful human beings.
Hiking and not being overweight are both free And used camping and backpacking gear isn’t that bad either
Great vid, laughed throughout. "Just get out there" is the best possible message.
Thanks haha
Reminds me of the offroading scene where people now buy jeep wranglers and Ford broncos to just drive them to the supermarket. Then come up stories about "wanting to go to moab". It's the same for the lifted truck crowd. They never take their vehicles near dirt. At least overlanders get their vehicles dirty.
Overlanding would be actual TRUCKS with off road tyres and suspension driving in convoys of 3 or more and basocally driving over continents.. What you guys do is just camping, calling it overlanding sam as you call yourselves expats when you move to Europe but youre just immigrants
Always laugh when I see these lifted 4Runners with roof tents, lights, etc driving around town. I bet my CX-5 sees more trails than most of them. Years ago I took my ‘94 Miata through some pretty rough trails outside of Flagstaff, AZ to get to a remote campsite. I scraped a little here and there, but I was careful and didn’t cause any damage to my car. Not ideal, but why buy a car that’s only made to excel off-road, but sucks to drive on road?
Well said!!
Still driving my 1988 Toyota with 31×10's. Been all over Death Valley, Mojave Desert, Coast to Coast, AZ, NV, CA, Mex, NM, TX, ect. I'm on my 3rd Camper Shell- been everywhere with very little...
Overlanding is more the burninating money hobby while pretending to be an outdoor dude
Just go with the tires which the factory engineers designed the car to run. Very simple. Don't try to beat a man at his own trade.
This guy is a real DOWNER AURA this!
Ya the guy who made this video sucks
WFO solid axle kit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have had this attitude since I first heard the term overlanding, Meanwhile ive been car camping my entire life with the basics, in support of my real hobbies
I would contend that overlanding is a real hobby. The problem is that 99% of the people that build "overlanding rigs" never actually overland, they just think it looks cool. And the content creators don't really care, they are just making content that makes the 99% feel like they "could do something cool if they wanted to".
The nicer your vehicle is the less you want to hike away from it.
Last line of defense...
You missed a point, most of us spend MONTHS daydreaming of equipment and scenario's we may get in.. Because we have boring office jobs and only get a vacation every few months.. LOL
Your vehicle is a mobility and a survival tool. You can go to a lot of remote places in a stock 2wd vehicle with normal ground clearance. 4x4 gets you further into remote places and offers security of traction and some redundancy. People in 4x4 work trucks in factory trim normally really need it. The aftermarket works of art are for creative expression. Motor sports is something else.
Only problem is those front bumps will fall apart when the glue holding them together lets go. Mine were useless after two months and only one time offroad the glue just tore apart and i will not be buying again
Oh man, that sucks. Thanks for commenting
That’s why I bought a Honda Fit and lifted it 2 inches 😂
It should be noted that as of 09/2003 the ball joints were redesigned to be more robust. That being said, the later ones should be less prone to this failure. I installed TRW (I will not use Moogs any longer) on my 2004 Sequioa and still running down the road 150K later!
If you hop onto facebook or any of the forums, you will still find ball joints failing unfortunately
I always thought of “overlanding” as a way to do the other outdoor hobbies. It’s cheaper to drive somewhere cool and car camp rather than flying and getting a hotel. Car camping allows you to be close to the hikes, rivers, etc. at a cheaper cost. And all you need is a way to cook food, a ground tent, and a sleeping bag basically.
My 02 limited v8 has a compass and temp on rear view mirror
To me the overlanding people are all about setting up their rig in the outdoors. They are more interested in cooking and setting up their tent and awnings then actually being in the outdoors. A common thing I hear is "I eat better out here than at home". Strange to me to set up a expensive kitchen and spend all your time cooking instead of enjoying the place you spent all that time and money to get to. Thanks for the gourmet meal though 😂
Finally, someone says the quiet part out loud. Overlanding is a scam and Overlanders are pompous snobs with more money than brains.
We have a 01 Ford Excursion V10,We do it all time, sleep in the back plenty of room. Tons of fun. 😅
They're a version of AT3 for people less likely to off-road. More comfortable, less noise, sacrificing slightly less off road capability.
I gotta tell you, showing up to a campground full of trucks and SUVs in a Prius is pretty fun.
Very
I always shook my head at "overlanding". We just called it camping, hunting, or fishing. The goal was always to do those things as cheaply and conveniently as possible, which always meant sleeping in the back of the rig, because it was always dryer and warmer than a tent. Getting over obstacles that your stock rig can't get past? Plan a better route.
Someone shoot me if I ever put an awning on my rig!! 😅 Camping 🏕 mofos!
Camping 🏕 I offroad, nothing wrong with "Camping" but call it what it is! "CAMPING" Fkin BS for stupid companies to sell dumbass tents and awnings that bolt to the side on your truck 🚚
Lol great video. It's a great way to charge more for the same products
Thank you for the review. Any experience in snow and ice?
Ya, some. I think they behave as you would expect for an all terrain. No AT tire that I’m aware of does real well on ice or super packed snow
@@208Tyler fair assessment. I've had ATs where some performed as expected, some were atrocious and others were above average. Thanks again!
