We didn't even get games like this back then. Prey really is one-of-a-kind. And here I thought I was the only person that ever played it.

I had the deluxe edition with the sound track, figurines, and the steel case. I hate myself now for selling it.

Definitely a game overshadowed by its unrelated namesake, and its very long development. The portal system was actually one of the big hangups for this game, from what I heard. Kind of crazy that it came out a year before Portal as well.
'Sup, Indigo, I was just binge watching your God Game video. Yeah, this game got overshadowed by its name, as now there's the Prey(2017) which is a better game but Prey(2006) is a great hidden gem which needs more attention.
Wasnt that regarding motion sickness due to being upside down and such? I loved this game but I had friends who couldnt stand it due to this.
It's also interesting to note that Narbacular Drop, Portal's precursor with similar portal mechanics, was released in 2005. It's pretty unlikely either game (Prey and Portal) had a strong influence on the other I think.
@@robinmattheussen2395 If you say that, you have to add that one of the reasons why Prey was in development hell since around 1997 was the inclusion of portals and how to make them work.
I remember playing it as a kid and laughing my ass of when u get into a room with some mini planet in glass box only to be teleported onto it like 2,3min later so epic
I will forever lament Bethesda's choice to scrap the original sequel. It looked like Blade Runner on an alien world.
It did look freakin' sweet. Prey (2017) is in my top 5 greatest games without a doubt, but Bethesda made an absolutely horrible choice of scrapping Prey 2 and naming Arkane Studio's game "Prey", ruining the chance of a real Prey sequel.

I loved this game. That's why I was so disappointed Prey 2 never got made, and that the new... Prey... was named Prey.

I agree they should have named it something else like Neuroshock. Nonetheless, Prey (2017) is an absolutely fantastic game as well as Prey (2006), they are just vastly different in every aspect.

Not getting Prey 2 will always depress me. I don't hate arkane studios for the Prey 2017 but I DO hate bethesda for fucking over human head studios so hard.

That surprised the hell out of me, because they seemed to have much of Prey 2 done. The backstory of the game was what interested me, too. I think the main character was supposed to be a clone of some sort, and when he died, he would be re-cloned again. Lately, I have noticed that Bethesda have fumbled, with at least a couple of their titles. Those would be Fallout 76 and Rage 2. Fallout 76 was just an unbelievable mess and Rage 2, while not a bad game, was still a dissapointment. I hope I am wrong, but it seems like Bethesda are on their way to become the next Activision.
Prey 2 was to focus on U.S. Marshal Killian Samuels, who starts the game on a passenger flight which suddenly crashes onto the Sphere, shown during the events of Prey. At the end of a short battle with some aliens he is knocked unconscious, after which the plot time skips forward several years. Samuels is now a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus. Though he is aware of his work and has retained his skills, he has no memory of what happened in the time that passed since his abduction. He initially believes himself to be the only human on Exodus until he runs into Tommy, whom he has met in the period he no longer remembers

I remember when this game came out, My brother and I were walking through wal-mart and they had the collectors edition in the "bargain" rack, and it was being sold for $10 bucks... Came in this awesome collectors metal case and other goodies. $10 bucks... Worth every penny...

One of the details I love about this game is the Art Bell Coast to Coast AM radio show cameos. People would call in talking about abductions and you'd see the thing they were describing being abducted float by. Little things like that really sold the immersion.
I regret zero minutes of the 3 times I played through this classic. Good memories.

I played Prey 2006 and Prey 2017 and they're both fantastic games with great storylines and characters, Prey 2017 is even one of my favorite games ever made. I loved both of them and they were great experiences, it's a shame Prey 2 never came out, I wanted to see what was next for Tommy and the Prey 2006 universe.
Such an amazing game. Love the opening, spirit plane, portals, gunplay, dialogue, overall story. Basically everything about it.

Damn Prey has held up better than I expected after 14 years. It's just a few polys and textures short of looking like it came out in 2020.
the iD Tech 4 engine was really ahead of its' time with real time shadows and realistic lighting... Doom 3 was also made on that engine and it still holds up 16 years later
@@LowKiiSavage It had a ton of features like ray tracing that were added to the core engine but just not enabled because of PCs at the time. The thing that killed iD Tech 4 is I heard that the tools to use it were TERRIBLE; it required extensive training to use so most companies just stuck with engines their teams were familiar with. Prey shows the effort could be worth it, though.
@@BlazingOwnager Id4 is easy to use, flexible. It did not had any ray tracing until a few weeks ago when someone started working on it. Search Doom 3 Rtx. Id4 was killed by not being gpl before udk arrived.

@@BlazingOwnager I agree on the tools. Horrible for graphics content creators. You need to learn how to write shaders and do it manually, rather than use some sort of UI. Unreal Engine gave content creators easy to use tools.
Yes, Prey! The last time I had loved the characters in a game so much was when the first MGS came out. Prey should have gotten much more attention at the time!

I think their undisputed masterpiece is Prey, a game so great most people probably don't play it and just get Arkane Studios's Prey. But they should! Because It's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the studio itself

Also, Prey does indeed have one of the best openings in gaming history. Kinda like the Car chase in The Darkness, it's just awesome and sets the tone. But Prey's is so immense and perfect!

I played it when I was relatively young, and I just loved all the things about it. It is still one of my favourite FPS games I've ever played, still a bit salty that we didn't get a true sequel to this game, even though what we got was pretty decent.
There has been nothing as unique as this game since. I remember messing about with all the interactables in Jen's bar, it was so fun, I didn't wanna leave the start of the game.
Which reminds me, it's been too long since I last played this game.
An interesting small point with Prey is that it follow the Cherokee hero mythology. With Tommy from a reluctant protagonist into a world saviour.
@Gavin Blain I actually liked this game back in 2006, there was alot of chuckle moments with Tommy being openly thinking like the player think. Anyways most of the game protagonist who are supposed to be Native Americans tend to be "Half" and most of them are usually set in Western genre. Any Natives protagonist set in modern day and where their race isn't really a big issue is really non existent.
@Gavin Blain Yeah, I mean Tommy being a Cherokee is just a plot device for his spirit walking resurrection against the aliens which is pretty fresh idea instead of the usual Sci Fi mutation. Not to mention they did do some research about the cherokee mythology. Another good point is that we get to listen to the late Art Bell radio broadcast throughout the game where he get callers with seeing the Alien ship

People always bitch about inclusion in games, and yet over 10 years ago, we had a badass Native American ripping and tearing his way across an alien mother ship.
Also, the level design and creativity should be known industry wide. Even all these years later, it still feels so refreshing to play.
Even before prey we had indian characters in FPS with Tal'set in Turok 1, Johnmy Fireseed in Turok 2, and his siblings in Turok 3.
Its like the people who complain don't actually play games or pay attention to anything that isn't triple A bunch of idiots I swear
N.A. characters are still vastly outnumbered by White, Black, and Asian characters though, although I guess since N.A. are only about 1% of the population it's to be expected.
@@kesorangutan6170 As an American, I can summarize the above sentiments as mostly just feelings of "As white males, we are really annoyed of hearing about non-inclusion in games, the Turok series basically proves that." I can't imagine actually pretending that 95 percent of video game characters from 1990 - 2014 we'rent American stereotype patriots with muscles, and females didn't have huge tits, high shorts, and constantly played "damsels in distress."
Reciting a couple games where the females are the badasses doesn't make me feel differently, as you'll notice they have huge tits/ armour that for some reason shows their thighs and decolletage. (chest area above breasts)
We live in a world where if Twitter feeds feel strongly enough about it, they drum up equal sentiment, which causes studios and share-holders to pull out of projects on account of controversy, thus meaning cancellations and lost jobs. Oh, not to mention people on the other side of the fence that are tired of the tropes that reinforce problems within society on a micro-scale.
At the end of the day, we are trapped in a sea of complaining. Bitching about the change, or bitching about not enough change.

The intro level this game was one of a kind, made you feel like you were literally in a movie. Fuckin' legend
Prey is still one of my favorite games ever. Over the top in some ways perhaps, but it's fun and the storyline is great. I will never stop being bitter about the sequel being cancelled either, I want to see the rest of the story somehow. Even a movie or comic book would work good enough, though it was intended as a game.

The Bounty Hunter sequel reminded me more of Mass Effect than the original Prey.

I remember playing this game back when I was way too little for the level of violence it had. The cinematic events and graphics were epic. It pioneered the idea of portals in video games.
After watching your review of this it reminded me that I once owned a physical copy so I went and got the game again and finished it and I’ve gotta say it’s incredibly impressive what they were able to achieve with games given the technology limitations at the time. We’ve traded level design and creativity for graphical fidelity and don’t even get me started on the reboot/remake

It was to happen after the original Prey hell you would have gotten to meet Tommy himself in the game as the character you were going to be playing as which was the pilot of the airliner you see being teleported onto the ship and eventually find its wreckage back in the original Prey, he survives that crash and becomes a bounty hunter... what the fuck is with the gaming industry and not allowing people to be a bounty hunter seriously any game that has that for a character is either A for sure gonna be canned or the character is gonna be killed off.

This game seriously had some of the most memorable set pieces ever. That school bus part scares me to this day.

Fun fact: The reason why you see murderous ghost children and have spiritual powers is that it's actually Earth's natural defense mechanism. The Mother even mentions it at one point.

Second game never came out to explain what the demon children were. I assume they are just interdimensional creatures that role play as human ghost kids.

I didn't remember this ending tho. I remember some kind of réunion in the spirit world, not that meeting with the alien girl.
My older cousin bought this for me when i was just a kid. It was the shit but also weird as hell. I remember replaying it multiple times.
I had such a trip playing this game. It was definitely underrated. The graphics, gameplay mechanics and story were definitely ahead of their time. I'm glad I played and loved it.
I heard recently that the head developer of Arcanes Prey never wanted to call it Prey, and was forced to by the publishers. He actually felt it would cause unnecessary confusion with this Prey, and he was totally right.
I think one potential titles among them that they wanted to use is Typhoon which makes sense with the story.
It needs a remaster for one and only one reason: To be available digitally once again. I just want to buy it.

I remember Dead Man's Hand. There was a demo supposed to be released on a CD or DVD addon to a magazine, but an editor put the full version intended for press there by mistake.

That Don't Fear the Reaper scene is one of the most memorable intros for me. Also when you saw a small planet in a room and then you transported on its surface was mindblown.
The multiplayer is also interesting. Sad, that no-one plays it.

Didn't have a problem with to be honest, but we all agree that it beats consistency to death, a Marine stuck in a futuristic high-tech facility can easily find a way to attach a flashlight to his chest, or even find a flashlight to every goddamn weapon of the game and attach it to each one of them, it was a cheap way to add an artificial pressure on the player
@@devostripes5964 it's not cheap because it's not frustrating. Contrived and a little unbelievable? Sure, that's fair but that's not really the point. It's still good design because it enhances tension and provides the player with a risk reward decision. And it's hardly necessary to progress, it's a matter of convenience and bravery to go without
@@MidnightMedium I get the point game design wise, but being cheap doesn't mean necessarily frustrating, it's cheap because a lot of horror games managed to put a lot more tension on the player than Doom 3 with more clever ways, that's why i consider it cheap. This plus the fact that it doesn't make sense, hell he's even using the pistol with one hand, why he doesn't use the other hand for the flashlight ? Sure the idea reaches it goal of putting tension on the player, but only artificially. That's one of the few things i liked in the BFG Edition, managing a battery is more consistent and you could at least watch the monsters taking damage and get some feedback instead of "light or shoot" It isn't a coincidence that no dev ever used this mechanic since Doom 3, not even it own remaster
@@devostripes5964 sure, that's fair. My point is that whether or not its contrived for the time period is fairly irrelevant to whether its effective, interesting, or fun as a mechanic. I hate Outlasts battery life for the camera being so low because its tedious to constantly reload a new battery and because it happens so often it distracts me from being scared or immersed and contributes nothing to the hook of that game. The flashlight and gun things funny to think about but it's about giving players the choice to use if they want (and they don't have to or necessarily need to all that much) that doesnt constantly interrupt or prevent the fun of gameplay, often contributing a tense layer to the proceedings. But just because I think it's interesting or well done doesnt necessarily mean it was the best choice overall and certainly not for a large portion of folks. I would just contend that at some point people need to get the sand out of their junk on this one and quit acting like it was some huge impediment to their enjoyment
@@MidnightMedium Like i said in my first comment i didn't have a problem with that, it's not really an issue and it doesn't make the game worse or unenjoyable , between the guys who think it's sacrilege and people who think it's awesome, i'm standing right in the middle, i recognize that it gave the game some sort of personality in it gameplay while i think it could've been done better
I remember playing this on release, on my ancient PC, it blew my mind then, and it still does even today, I also remember seeing the trailer for Portal and thinking "huh! so like Prey but without combat"

Oh man you forgot to tell people about Art Bell's radio program that's in the game. I love the feeling we get on how things are happening on earth while you are in the Sphere. Great video, great video-game, great work! Keep it up bucko!
i played this game with my old man when i was 12 years old, i bought a copy as soon as this video finished for my PC and the intro is still one of the best things ever. thank you gman 🤘
Us PC gamers were spoilt for great FPS games back then and Prey was seriously hurt because of this. Everything FPS on PC in the mid 2000's was compared to the very high bar of those games, which each game having obsessed and very defensive fanboys. I remember peoples complaints about Prey basically boiling down to "it doesn't do this thing as good as HL2" or "Doom 3 does this thing better" or "F.E.A.R does that better". If a new FPS game didn't do _everything_ as good or have some ground-breaking new feature then it was brushed aside by snobs and fanboys. I admit i occasionally did this myself, but i still played Prey from start to finish and loved it. It's a classic.
The id Tech 4 engine was another thing that was underrated. Almost everyone preferred the Source engine and how it looked. I'd argue online (lol) about how technically, visually and atmospherically superior the dynamic lighting was in Tech 4 and how it will hold up better than the fake baked lighting of Source, but most people didn't listen. I was obviously right.
Yeah it really was a golden era back then, it's was a constant wave of amazing games. Not so much now sadly.
I haven't played Doom 3 or FEAR, but between Prey and HL2, I'd easily pick Prey. This review really reminded me how good that game was.

The Prey theme song / opening theme is unforgettable! The game was released 14 years ago, and I still listen to that song from time to time. Jeremy Soule is beyond any doubt one of the best videogame music composers, thank you so much for the nostalgia! Oh and yes, the game is really good and still perfectly playable and enjoyable in 2020!

God this one takes me back. I love Prey (2017) because I adore Immersive Sims... but it hurts to think of what could've been with Prey 2.

It has creative use of portals (before Portal did it), gravity shifting, environmental puzzles, some hauntingly violent imagery, great level design, a creative death mechanic, an intriguing story with a definitive ending! The intro is one of the most iconic moments in my gaming life! :D
I was amazed at the portals in this game back in the day and it's interesting that they used exactly the same color scheme with orange and blue as the portals in Valve's game Portal that came out one year after this game.
One of my favourite games of all time, I had the boxed released which got lost somewhere but managed to get a Steam key. The most iconic thing for me was the audio in the game.... truly amazing.

Hell yeah brother. One of my favorite games. It’s crazy to me that more people don’t know about it. It’s a hidden gem. I’d kill for a remaster of it. The graphics for its era were amazing, imagine how it would look with current tech. 😅

This was the first game I installed when, for the first time in my life, I upgraded to a very good gaming PC and looking at those fleshy bits at max settings at the beginning was awesome
I have so much nostalgia with this game, it completely blew me away back in 06. Still sad to this day that we never got Prey 2, I'll never quite forgive Bethesda for canceling Prey 2 and shutting down Human Head :(

What an amazing game. Can't believe i slept on it for so long. I'm a massive Halo fan, and playing through this the first time felt like a Halo 2 type experience, if that makes sense. Excellent old school FPS gameplay, great weapon sandbox, and a really interesting story that kept you wanting more. Really sad that we'll never get a sequel. As great a game Prey 2017 is, Arkane really didn't have to take the Prey name, could have easily started a new IP. Now the door is essentially closed on ever finding out Tommy's fate. BTW the game is playable on Xbox One as well via backwards compatibility.
Love this game! Still have it on a "Sold Out" disc. What I appreciate the most is how they handled Tommy, you showed the clip where he feels sick after going through the portals which is what a normal person would do, and the swearing is spot on.
Sometimes I rewatch Prey 2's E3 2011 trailer and gameplay demo and cry myself to sleep

RIP Human Head Studios - corporate murder isn't something u see a lot of outside of EA's studio activities - but you couldve done a fair bit more research into how Prey 2 would've tied into Tommy's story
The way you described Prey 2 makes it feel like a complete departure from the first game, misrepresenting it and potentially turning newcomers off of looking further into Prey 2
Human Head Studios is still around, but Bethesda (being dicks) got Prey (2006) removed from Steam.

I remember playing the demo to this game and some of the full game when I was a kid. I never got to finish it unfortunately. So I went and bought a key for it I found on G2A. Thankfully, it worked and let me download the game on Steam. It's a shame we never got to see a continuation to the original Prey in a sequel. Looking forward to finally finishing this game all these years later.

I remember how the devs said they wanted the fight with his GF to be an emotional moment for the player, but I couldn't stop laughing during that fight. I was crying all right, but they were tears of joy!
I think they absolutely nailed it. I remember when I first played Prey, that scene was just so disturbing for me, I felt so bad for her.

Wasn't there like...a leak or something that had evidence that Arcane Studio's Prey was intended (possibly also a project title) to be called "Psyshock"? Or is that just some fake news I am misremembering?
I also remember reading about it, i think it was actually meant to be named 'NeuroShock' (which would fit both the neuromods in the game, aswell as the fact it is heavily inspired by System Shock).
What a shame they had to go with Prey as the name, it's a great game (mooncrash is even better), but it has nothing to do with the original and also just made some people hate it even without playing it (with some reason i suppose, it's not cool seeing something you like be 'replaced' with something completly different)

I'm pretty sure I heard Arkane was told by Bethesda they could make any game they wanted as long as it was called Prey. The "psychoshock found in the game files" probably was a misconception, given there's an ability in the game called psychoshock

It really is sad that dynamic lighting was tossed out for the sake of better textures. Good art direction and strong lighting will always be better then more things in more detail on the screen
Dynamic lighting goes a long in way as far as letting an old game not look too dated go, just like Doom 3 imo

Hey Gman, would you consider doing a review on Lost Planet 2? One of the few shooters Japan ever made and it has a design philosophy that has largely been lost since gen 6 console era with secret levels or mechanics you’re not madeaware of by the game. Also the co-op is fun af.
Also is xbox one backwards compat so people are still playing it after 10 years and capcom has kept the servers up.

I remember asking my mom to rent me Lost Planet 2 without knowing anything about it and it immediately became one of my favorite games. Good to know the Xbox version still has an active community, I’ll have to dig out my copy and play it again. Wish they’d make another entry in the series.

I just don't understand how this game didn't end up a bigger deal. I mean seriously, this is what games should aspire to be. There are so many unique things about this game, between the environment, the characters, and the puzzle; Like that cube you get stuck in. This game was amazing

My babysitter when I was a kid was a huge gamer, he's the main reason I'm into games and he introduced Oblivion and Prey to me by accident. This game scared me shitless when I was younger as well.

The one thing I have to hand to arkane is they actually found a way to rival 06 in the intro department. Groundhog's Prey < Prey 06.
I fuckin loved both games for different reasons.
I remember playing this game on DVD/DISC, I was recently thinking about this game and was able to find the game online as steam key. So purchased it for about $7 or so. This way my sons can play it, if they want to in the steam library. I think it was an awesome game and was really hopefully for a sequel when I finished. Great Work, keep up the good work. I plan to do some gameplay uploads for my other channel later this year.
I wanted to see this video 5 months ago but for some reason UA-cam never notified me of it and I forgot about it. But either way, I'm glad you covered it. It feels like literally no one has ever talked about this game, and I don't really know anyone who's even heard of it because it's completely overshadowed by the newer unrelated Prey title. I hold some good nostalgia from this game and I'm honestly curious how it ended up being so underrated, especially from all of the unique mechanics the game brought to the scene. I might have to just make my own playthrough of it

Prey 2017 is my favourite game of this generation. I also have owned a physical copy of Prey 2006 for over 10 years and still haven't touched it. I always forget that I have it.

I haven't played the new one yet though, as it wasn't a sequel I didn't feel I needed to.
I played this game, best first person shooter with the best story and implenentation, only dead space came close. Not just portals, also gravity played a big role, couldn't understand why the arena style multiplayer got so much flak, levels were awesome, with gravity walkways and portals. Also, technologically speaking, these aliens were the smartest and most tech-savvy I have seen in any game. I mean, during the campaign you go to your spirit realm to talk to the grandfather and acquire spiritual powers parallel to that, spirits keep appearing during the levels that have you scratch your head, seemingly out of place. Until the twist happens, the spirit "children" you encounter were the alien analyzing your spirit form, and when you go to your spirit real, you see the aliens have found the frequency to the spirit realm and opened a portal in there to invade. It was an awesome moment.
