Unfortunately Kona, my guinea pig passed away Firday night, October 13th 2023, suddenly, at the age of 6 years and 5 months old. I miss him and love him so so much. He was always my baby, and always will be, and his memories and presence will always have a place in my heart. Rest in peace bubbas, you always meant the world to me and I've been nothing but so incredibly proud to be your momma.
In the study of rabbit behavior, thumping (or "foot-stomping") is generally interpreted as a complex form of communication with meanings that can vary based on context. In both wild and pet rabbits, thumping is usually associated with the following primary functions: 1. Warning Signal: This is considered the primary meaning in both wild and domestic rabbits. Thumping serves as an alarm signal to alert other rabbits of potential danger. Wild rabbits, especially, are known to thump when they sense a predator nearby, using the noise to alert others to a perceived threat. 2. Expression of Fear or Distress: In both wild and pet rabbits, thumping is often a sign of fear or heightened anxiety. When startled, rabbits might thump as a reflexive response to something they perceive as threatening or unfamiliar. This could include sounds, smells, or sudden movements that might trigger a defensive reaction. 3. Attention-Seeking in Domestic Rabbits: Pet rabbits may sometimes thump to get attention from their owners, especially if they've learned that thumping brings interaction or comfort. While not their instinctive reason for thumping, it can develop as part of their communication repertoire in a human-dominated environment. Some pet rabbits, for example, will thump when left alone or confined if they anticipate that their owners will respond. Regarding anger or frustration: While some pet owners might interpret thumping as an expression of anger, thumping is not typically considered a direct signal of aggression or irritation in rabbits. Instead, rabbits often use body language (such as grunting or lunging) to show frustration. However, thumping can occur if a rabbit is feeling "cornered" or perceives a loss of control, which could be misinterpreted as anger but is more about insecurity or stress. Differences in Communicative Function Between Wild and Pet Rabbits Studies have not indicated significant changes in the fundamental communicative function of thumping between wild and pet rabbits. However, pet rabbits, due to their close relationship with humans, might adapt the behavior slightly, using it more frequently in novel or unnatural situations. For instance, a pet rabbit might thump due to loud noises or unfamiliar people, contexts in which a wild rabbit would also thump but might not encounter as regularly. In summary, thumping across both wild and domestic rabbits is primarily a signal of alert or fear. Pet rabbits may occasionally use thumping to seek attention or indicate mild stress, but it is not a direct display of anger or aggression.
I just 'rescued' a dwarf bun from a neglectful owner who just left him in a cage on the front lawn to 'survive'.
