SUV 'coupes' - eliminate them with fire! An abomination of design sense of the highest degree, every time one of these is seen rolling around, designers and artists across the globe dies a little inside.
I strongly disagree with the start stop buttons, keyless go, start stop button is a bliss and after owning a car where you don't need key anymore you just can't go back to old. I mean really key in pocket is uncomfortable? I have like 2-3 sets of keys in my pockets all the time, get more comfortable pants then.
Egzon Shala Inflation my son. For example, the 7er started at like £47k in 2005. After applying inflation, that would be around £70k in 2020. Newer cars also come with a lot more standard kit, so often work out cheaper than their counterpart from a decade ago.
My car has a "Sport Mode", which basically makes the dials go red and pumps a really bad fake engine noise through the speakers. I use it quite a lot cos I'm a fucking idiot.
And that's the reason why car manufacturers put these things in their cars. We know it's ridiculous, but a lot of people kinda like that stuff. I don't blame anyone. I still chuckle when I see expensive cars with fake exhausts tho. Especially during the winter when you can clearly see no steam coming from the fake exhausts. Makes an expensive car look like a cheap piece of kids toy to me.
Agree with everything! Especially the touchscreen - In Australia you get a fine for even touching your phone in the car, but you can spend 5 minutes while driving to sort out your touchscreen settings...go figure!
My wife's Evoque is like this. To turn on the seat heater, you press the climate control knob, but this doesn't turn it on, it just brings up the complicated graphical menu for the seat heaters, where you then select the bottom or back of the seat, and click the "up" arrow to turn it on. Only, you can't do this when you first start the car as the whole thing is booting up, and you can't do it until you've reversed off the drive either, as the controls don't work when the reversing camera is using the screen... It's bizarre - as you say you (quite rightly) should not be dialing numbers on your phone while driving, but have a full Windows desktop for turning on the heating.
@@coover65 Have your phone in a holder and get caught touching it, you get a fine. Be teaching your kids to drive, in the passenger seat and touch your phone and you - the passenger get a fine!
Actually for me: - Prices that going higher and higher even though, the cost of production doesn't. This all the effect of getting the leasing/credit to buy a car made too easy. Car dealers prefer to sell car on leasing or credit than in cash, as they are getting "thank you gift" from banks! - The "Packs" that are locking you to pay 9 things even thought you really wanted just that one option.Or that you can't get best engine on cheapest trim level?! Why? Cause! But you can have your UltraSportLine on cheapest engine. - The ads that shows top trim, but price listed that is for their cheapest model. That should be illegal. - Just too much bling-bling. Disgusting.
Screw those packs. I have a 2014 Kia Soul. Dealer said I needed to spend an extra 1100 to get a base automatic if I wanted cruise control and keyless entry. They weren't even options with the base manual. It's litterally a 2014 with no cruise control, and I have to stick a key in the door to unlock it. Cruise control was an easy fix, the plugin for it is stuffed behind a blank housing. Just had to buy a new housing with a switch on it. Kinda makes me wonder why they didn't just put it in there anyway.... oh yeah, money! Sorry this came out much longer than i thought.
Cost of production absolutely is getting higher and higher. Vehicle manufacturers are lucky to average 5% profit margins on cars. Manufacturing itself is very streamlined these days, but so much is spent on R&D because of overly stringent emissions and safety regulations. How does every new Suzuki Swift need a mild hybrid system? Every car sold in the EU must include collision mitigation technology, which sounds great, but it adds weight and cost, even on a small city car. Cost of raw materials have been steadily increasing over the last 3 decades as well.
The piano black on my 2017 E300 is fine to this day even with normal daily usage. I think Matt sees them a scratched all the time on his press cars (which are often abused).
Thank you for making the list! Helps also to comment the points a bit better :) 1 - Agree! For me it's already at the point where I would refuse to buy a car with such fake exhausts. Already have to accept they cheat on the emission regulations! 2 - I wonder why there wasn't mentioned more buttons that have to be buttons, e.g. volume, seat heater, PDC... There's plenty of other stuff that currently is a physical button/control that doesn't need to be (e.g. light - that's a button that gets touched ONCE in all of the car's life, to set it to auto, done). Touch screens also have the disadvantage that they have to be relatively close to you, so you can touch them even if you have shorter arms. So they have to be placed further out of view than just a screen, not good. 3 - That is a ridiculuous penis extension on the inside, and should be plainly illegal on the outside. Installing stuff who's only purpose is to annoy people you drive by...idiots. 4 - It looks shit yes. BMW's now look all pig-faced. 5 - Actually think what e.g. BMW does here is correct. The 318, 320, 330 all have the same 2.0L engine with different turbos etc. They keep their old system to be in line with what people expect in terms of power. Audi on the hand are just idiots, they put just bigger fantasy numbers there to trick people. 6 - agree 7 - agree 8 - Hell no, that can look great. Has to be within limits (e.g. not glaringly bright) but can be a nice style component. 9 - Putting 10 gears on a car that is intended to be shifted manually (e.g. flappy paddles) is mighty stupid. On all the others that's totally fine - whatever the calculation result between weight, cost, reliability, efficieny, fun turns out to be should be installed 10 - Don't like it? Don't buy it. It's just a question of style. 11 - Clearly the fault of the people buying it, not of the carmaker. Putting 3k€ for M-package on an 116i instead of upgrading the engine clearly is stupid, but if people want to...? 12 - Nah, I like it. It's not suitable if you have children in your car often or transport stuff etc., but then simply don't select it. 13 - Eco mode in an M or AMG is a bit pointless yes, but it's software that's basically free, so I get why they put it anyway 14 - No! The starter button is great! There are some cars where you have to put the key in a slot, then push a button - that is clearly stupid. Otherwise not having to take out key from pocket, bag etc. is the whole point of the keyless entry & start. Keep that!
I’ve hated fake vents for a long long long time. I didn’t even know about fake exhausts, or the numbers which look like they tell you engine size but don’t. Thanks for adding those to my first-against-the-wall-when-the-revolution-comes list. (Full disclosure: I once bought Oakley trainers which had pretend carbon fibre tops and sports-bike tyre soles)
BMW have been guilty of the engine size numbers for a while, but the opposite way around. The 2002 318i had a 2 litre engine, whether it was 1800cc or so originally or not I'm not sure.
So is it an engine or a motor? If a motor then who cares about seeing it. Good luck trying to see a motor in an electric car. I'm saying this because I'm tired of people refer to these the incorrect way. Motors are electric, engines are combustion. Very fucking simple!
@@y.a.46 On some cars they use them to keep engine heat from burning the paint on your hood. Mostly they're used for sound proofing but you won't really notice a difference if you take it off.
but u cant get that back cause if your fuel pumps are precise it cant do it and they cant do them unprecise cause you would have bad fuel economy, less power, more emissions
Totally with you. I have a 2010 Audi S5. It has real exhausts, it has real carbon fibre trim, it has real noise. To cut a long story short, ITS REAL. My Wife's Passat GTE does have fake engine noise because the people who are oblivious to their surroundings can hear it when its in elec mode. All the best & thanks for a great vid.
It's a way to cut costs, two lights on every car is like ten bucks but multiply that by half a million cars, and divide that figure among a dozen directors. Adds up to a nice bonus doesn't it?
i love my rear fogs in bad weather or to piss off the occasional tailgater 🙃. i have a Audi A6 c6.5 and im one of the many few drivers with lights on both right and left had sides.
Same here. Starter buttons, and cars unlocking on contact with your key in your pocket has been one of my favorite changes cars got in the recent years. Very convenient, and any time I go back to driving a car that I have to use a key, it gets annoying.
Starter buttons are good only if you can open your doors without them ! For instance, in my bmw, i can’t open the doors without pressing the button on the keys, BUT i have a start button and nowhere to put my keys inside besides cup holders and stuff like that. I end up always forgetting where the keys are. Honestly it’s a pain in the ass and it’s stupid i don’t know why they did that shit.
@@BerserkFury89 Yeah, I don't get Mat's hate for the starter button. The only thing that is a little annoying are those cars with starter buttons but without keyless entry (where you touch the handle), requiring you to fish the key out to unlock it. Still, the whole issue with finding a place to put it?? Just put it in your pocket, Mat. It's not all that, mate.
Kamal Berrada you didn’t pay for all the extraaaaas :) there is a keyless entry on bmw , but it’s so expensive that most people don’t bother in having that
Absolutely , even wiping over with a brand new microfibre cloth will ruin it. High quality synthetic detailing brush and a Hoover are the best chance of cleaning with minimal damage.
Similar to the start/stop button trend that bothers me are key fobs that don't have a hole to attach it to a keyring, it's just more cumbersome to carry and keep track of two separate pieces instead of being able to keep it together
You forgot the worst trend of all: huge wheels with ridiculously low-cut tires and almost no rubber, mounted for no reason on family and saloon cars as well as small SUVs, resulting in less comfort in daily use (and the tires are more expensive to replace). Even worse: as you move up to premium trims of the same car, you get bigger wheels and less rubber, so premium models are less comfortable than the entry-level ones. It started as a sales argument, trying to lure buyers to spend more on their new car: If you'll shell out a couple of grand more, we'll give you this and that, and ah... you'll get BIGGER WHEELS (which you really don’t need) - Bigger is better right? wrong in this case. Yes, they do look epic as someone here put it, but they are a pain in the ass... literally!
Idan Reiss I’m down with 20 inch on some cars but anything bigger is atrocious. I think it’s bad too if you drive over 20 inch may cause a lot of discomfort. SUVs as well sitting on 22-24’s.
@@flyxingu It's not confined to the UK, it's global. It started as a sales argument, trying to lure buyers to spend more on their new car. Bigger is better right? wrong in this case.
a friend of mine told me that his uncle bought a diesel 8 series, and when he arrived at my friend's house to show the car and stuff he revved the engine to impress him, but from the outside, all you could listen was the rattle of the diesel engine hahaha. My friend had to explain to him that the car makes that noise from the inside and that the engine doesn't actually sound all that exciting
@@unlovabledeadsquirrel Pretty much yeah! Modern cars are designed with the 3-year lease in mind and nothing more. Manufacturers have increasingly little incentive to make cars last beyond the warranty period or the initial lease contract.
I can imagine where the fake vents come from: - Designers draw the car with lots of vents everywhere because it looks really fast and sporty - Engineers actually put the design through CFD analysis and find out the grills actually make the car less aerodynamic and slower - Designers/directors won't budge and really want them in because they look so cool - Engineers put the grills in, but block them off ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
With the new supra, yes, the vents are fake, but they’re designed to be removed or replace it with a legit on. They did it deliberately because they knew that the tuning community would be doing a lot with it, and since the car didn’t need all of the vents, they just blocked them off and gave you the option to use them
Daniel Spooner the new supra is dumb, because all those empty spots for “tuner” companies basically showed that Toyota could’ve given a better car w more stuff for the price but they just said “let the customers do it
I'm a Volkswagen salesman and a LOT of my customers mention that. Im a young guy and so never though of it but a lot of older people rely on them to get out of the car and I've lost a few sales to that!
i don't think fake vents, fake grills, and lights are bad, they aren't necessary but they are design element at the end and they do really make the car look better.
Touchscreens in general suck. I'm sad that at this point, Mercedes and BMW seem to be the only manufacturers who still offer alternative control methods, such as a swivel wheel or a touch pad.
Ive always bough pre-owned with cash. I think the reason corporations are able to get away with such high new vehicle prices despite wages being relatively stagnant is because of the amount of people that like to take on debt & do loans, leasing, & credit. The governments likes to do the same thing, spending in excess, while printing money indefinitely & giving bailouts to mismanaged corporations. It's the reason the global financial system is collapsing & fraudulent. I'm glad to be in my late 20s, never owned a credit card, & debt free with a nice Manual BMW E82 without any of these bad trend features.

8:20 about the "line" badges, Opel (which is the german vauxhaul or buick) also owns up to that trend with the "OPC-Line" which as some of you may already guessed is the VXR variants, for example the Astra VXR is the Astra OPC. the Insignia VXR is the Insignia OPC ,etc.
@@lostsquirrel788 it's good because less engine means less emission? That's a way to common mistake. No, smal 3cyl engines are mostly even worse for climate. On higher speed (and I mean 90 kph or higher) the smal engine has to work very hard where a big engine runs smoothly. It's also better for the health of the engine. And changing engines more frequently because they tend to break down more often then 4 or 6 cylinders isn't good for climate either.

The idea of doing away with badges related to engine size when you want to start making hybrids and electrics isn't bad, it makes sense to have a badge that represents a certain level of performance regardless of the powertrain. The problem is them using completely arbitrary numbers that can't be compared to anything else for a frame of reference, when they would have gone with something more useful and logical like, say, a rough power output figure.
Agree. A touch screen should be a minus on the CAP safety rating. Heat control, radio control, anything analogue is easier too control with an analogue control (knob or slider). Using a digital switch/button is just a trend, though probably cheaper too make.
people could easily go on google on the tesla screen and watch a movie or something while the car drives itself and ends up crashing. somebody did that before and was knocked into a coma for 2 months.
Having to put the key into ignition was really annoying, the key is often attached to several others, that then just rattle around hanging there. The startbutton is a good invention here.
But then it wouldn't feel cool would it? Honestly though, I'm with this. It's so pointless and I'd rather much feel the engine start to life through the keys; It's so much more satisfying.
Agree on every single point. Everytime I spent time in the new S4, S5, S6, S7, SQ7 and SQ8, I was so angry! It must stop. Better have a sporty diffuser without any exhaust, than fake ones!
@@testacorsa150 they might not do what a diffuser on a race car does. But it is not fake. But you don't want race diffuser on your daily. And it's often looks good some car don't (but every one can not like everything). I have not found any fake exhaust that looks good.
If you ask me I dont really have any issues with this, they look real, they are fake, but like what's the big problem here, thye just want to make their car look more sporty, and I don't really have anything against them
I agree. Every time I drive besides an Tesla for example, I see that massive screen, which is almost half the monitor on my desktop, I wonder how on earth you are supposed to have all your attention to the road, at night it's even worse, those massive screens give a lot of light and that makes you see less outside. There is a reason the lighting on your dashboard has a limit in it's brightness.
They are. I rent a car (Citroen C4 Cactus) and wanted to stop air from outside. Till i found it, i drove on the highway half a mile blind. My luck was: less traffic, caused by night driving...
I agree with everything except the Start/Stop button. It's useful to just put the key in the cup holder area when not using it and just press the brake and the button and boom.
I fully support your view on these fake exhaust (or even real ones protruding from the bumpers) and the controls all imbedded in the computer screens. Just not practical for owners!
@@elnoel1220 10 years of TDI dominance in Le Mans would say otherwise.. but they should at least make it its own model instead of acting like it's the same car as the petrol version. It aint. But saying a diesel cant be a performance car? That's even more illegal.
The exhaust one is a very bad idea. I love audi for years but often they come back wrong ideas. My a4 tfsi has two real exhausts, the new one fake ones, I would not buy it no more!
Pretty sure it was brought in primarily for diesel cars as they required a downward facing exhaust to aid emissions (any advances on this information?) - this is why you still see real exhausts on quite a few petrol models still.
My new A1 Vorsprung (i know...right?) has no tailpipes. I like the fact that it's concealed keeping the symmetry of the rear, with all its fake vents and fascias :D
All pre planned, pre engineered depreciation. Over price the piece of crap; make the final payment; then buy another one. every point you made is on my list too. I will not buy a car where I have to go into the entertainment system to increase the fan speed. When I started driving cars, (a very long time ago) there was an ignition key and a pull lever (I think lever is the best name) to start the engine. We also had to get out of the car and turn the rear lights on! It was a long time ago. So some changes were an advantage. Heaters and fans were an optional extra.
I like the 'push to start' saves me fannying around trying to get the key in, yes its not difficult to get the key in but its just so much easier to push a button.
Just make a place to put the key in like a "holder for it". Than both problems are solved. Plus, you don't need to put your key there if you don't want but you can if you don't want it in your pocket.
BMW must b one of the worst offenders. My 335d cost £41k as standard. I bought it 2nd hand and the original sales bill was in glove compartment. £12k worth of options were selected for the car !! £41k car actually cost £53k.... bonkers..
It's an odd one. The folk who actually care or need to work on the engine only see all the additional under bonnet plastic as nothing more than a nuisance that gets in the way. The folk who actually think it looks good are the ones that will never actually have to remove it to do any work on their cars.
I agree with all of them........ Except the final one. Honestly, i love the start buttons, so much easier to get in the car and drive away. Its safer for the ladies too, without the need for them to to find their keys in their bags when a creepy guy is lurking around their car.
Jalol Dean Whats wrong with Taycan Turbo? Its so cool that they used the traditional ”Turbo” name. Glad they didn’t make a whole new performance name for electric vehicles only. Big thumbs up for Porsche.
The coupe naming on crossovers and SUVs really is annoying. At least here in Austria Nissan markets the new Juke as coupé-crossover which is just bullshit.

@mikin lirou And the reason for them being plugged by default is 1. the standard Supra is not producing a lot of heat 2. it increases aerodynamic efficiency which is very helpful for Toyota as well as casual customers.
They really should move on to phone infotainment. Slap your phone on and there you have it, best navi, best apps. No stupid graphics none of that nonsense. And finally beautiful dashboards that can last and not feel outdated in a couple of months. But then, i guess they're banking on systems like that so they can sell new cars.
I could justify the long front overhangs if the car is struggling in safety regulations. Although, there should be a way to make a safe, yet beautiful car.
- When you buy a new car you can choose the rim size yourself, lol - Just buy a comfortable car, like a Citroen or something wtf? Or a Mercedes without the AMG package - That's most often to increase crash protection. They wouldn't do it if there wasn't a good reason - Just fucking buy a bigger car
-Low profile tire/huge wheel on regular cars Brakes are getting bigger so they don't fade out as easily with heavy use and just stop better in general -hard suspension Better handling - the tuning out of body roll to a degree compared to previous decades is a good thing. Front drive cars can actually turn corners without ploughing on straight. -unnecesary long front overhangs Pedestrian safety regs and /or aerodynamics -cramped interiors The same model between generations typically get bigger. If you go from a Golf to a Polo, you're going to get a smaller car. After a few generations, the small car it was moves towards a medium size car and they create a new model to fill the small car position in the lineup.
Start/Stop buttons are a problem when a key's battery dies. You have to use tactics that the showroom didn't tell you. But you didn't mention the most annoying trend, which is that cars don't come in many colours anymore. Black, silver, grey or white. Thats it. Some will let you have one shade of red or blue, but that's it, its ridiculous. I wanted my Tiguan R-Line in a dark/forest green but I was forced to get grey. My street is full of monotone cars now...
Great that you pointed all of these out. The thing with the starter buttons and keys isn't such a big issue tho IMO. I'd say the best option is to have a keyed ignition between the seats, in the middle just like SAAB had. It's safer for your knees in case of a crash. Damn I miss so many of SAABs solutions and patents...
Saab's auto division was such a good brand, shame it died. Now who's gonna make the world's weirdest but still good cars? Stellantis? I wouldn't trust them to know what a 'good car' was if it hit them and broke their neck and it's been that way since Lee Iacocca left Chrysler absolutely ages ago.

Luckily I use loose pants, but with no cubby you're only other option is to let it rattle.
Another trend that needs to stop: The unnecessary need to place giant iPads all over the dashboard. It should be a combination between physical buttons (for climate controls) and a screen for navigation system.
That start button is really nitpicking. I've got one on my Toyota Auris Hybrid and I love it. My key chain has my car keys, house keys, garage keys and a clip so I can easily hang it up at home. All the stuff used to just be hanging and banging everywhere and the easy start button got rid of that. It's also much faster to start if you're in a hurry and no scratches around the key hole.
This is excellent, I've been thinking literally all of these (apart from starter buttons) for years! But definitely my biggest annoyance is the fake exhaust and exaggerated sounds from the cabin. Car companies that do that - shame on you.
Electric parking brakes. Living in Canada, we love handbrakes for being silly once or twice. But I’ve actually avoided a couple potential crashes when it was pure ice on the roads. If you get caught in a slide sometimes the handbrake is the only way to rotate your car to avoid something.
The problem with this is that some manufacturers have mandatory push to start but no comfort access. So the person must pull keys out their pocket to press unlock button, and then figure out a place to keep the key. At least with comfort access, the key STAYS where you desire all the time.
Ben Marcus: thirty years ago remote entry blippers were just coming on the market. A friend fitted an aftermarket version to his Fiesta XR-2, very posh. He got a lot of stick for that. I had the world’s shittiest Talbot Horizon (just got divorced... ouch) so I took to leaving it unlocked. When he “blipped” his Fiesta I just stood back and threw my keys at the Horizon, bouncing off the ever fading door paint. Then I walked up and casually retrieved the keys from the floor (look cool Rodney) and entered the car without using the key! Ahh the things that amused us on the way to the pub so many years ago......
The funniest is that with the proper intonation (hé merde !) and a long final "e", it is a common reaction to mechanical issues. Toyotas are mostly known for their reliability though.
You have to be able to squint If you look at every car with that..😒😣😵 Imagine a fast ride on a highway and you stop for a tiny little break... And your engine with the glowing turbo stops immediately instead of running after for a few seconds 😬
@@aryboss1514 I have no particular objection to pointless gimmicks, provided that they're not actually inflicted on me. I think most vehicles with auto-stop allow you to turn it off, and it stays off until you turn it on again, if ever. The Subaru lets you turn it off, but only until the next time you start the car, at which point it gets re-enabled. I eventually used a hack to makes the car believe it's towing a trailer. For some reason, that disables the auto-stop feature, but I shouldn't need to do that.
All of you out there, please remember this, each time you're speccing up your car to buy: every electronic gadget is just a way to get your money cheaply. Every "option" is FAR less expensive to build than the price they charge for it. Every new electronic way to operate something that used to be mechanical (handbrake, start button, any knob or button on the dash) is a cheap substitute which is cheaper to build than the original mechanical kind and which is marketed as a "clever", "modern" and "comfortable" alternative. But it's just clumsier and more dangerous to operate.

The worst of all is the auto "start-stop" system that cuts the engine every time you stop. So annoying and unnerving at busy junctions or worse still when parking. Have to turn it off every time I get in the car too.
depends where you driving. If you're mostly driving along inner city traffic jams it is annoying, but when you really have to wait a long time at some traffic lights, what's better than sitting in complete silence
When your car has keyless entry, the start button actually does increase the level of comfort. Otherwise you’ll just be stuck with the keys in your hands...
I hate every Keyless option. It feels a bit unsafe. And it feels easier for thieves to intercept the transponder code and steal your car. A friend of mine got his RS5 stolen this way, right from his courtyard. And it was supposed to be the safest security system (at this time).. Since then i try to avoid keyless options. 👎🏼
@@markuswa2146 That's why I'm using a signal blocking pouch/keychain. They actually work. You can find them on AliExpress. When you leave the car in an unsafe spot or the driveway, just put the key in the pouch and the signals are blocked. Really cheap as well.
How hard is it to simply pull out the key from the pocket though? Given the way 'convenience' features are taking over, we'll probably end up looking like those ball shaped people from Wall-E, by the end of the century.
I agree with everything, with the exception of the last bit of the starters, pulling your keys off of your belt to put them into the car to start it for me is a big nuisance, I love that I switched to a car that has a push start button, I leave my keys on my belt the entire time in my car, and with my car unlocking the door as I put my hand on the handle, I never touch my keys after I first put them on in the morning.
I'm intrigued - you call a tow truck, how long does that take? What about if it's the middle of the night/weekend/holiday, on an interstate miles from anywhere? And what does the tow truck do exactly if your tire is completely dead, does he replace your wheel with the tyre that you want or just tow it to a garage that's closed and you need to get to your destination? How much does all that cost and is it the same for every car/tire? With a spare wheel you change it in like 15 minutes and you're good to go, no cost until you have to change your damaged tire at a garage of your choosing, with a tire of your choice, e.g. online, from hundreds available. By the way, when he said slashed tires, he's not talking about someone actually slashing them, he's talking about damaged tires, e.g. rocks, nails, glass, etc.
It's ~500 usd extra cost to fit a full size spare wheel+jack+ wrench. The only problem I see is when manufacturers don't at l;east offer the space for a proper full size spare wheel, which you can later buy a used wheel and a proper wrench, not their one feet crap.

Despite what their owners say, they drive like a boat and actually have little extra room compared to other designs.
SUV's! England is already relatively small and densely populated - the last thing we need is people in bigger cars who have no road awareness and can't park them!
Saleem Jawaid - Yes, that’s the ultimate sin by car manufacturers! And it tells everyone the driver has either given up on life, or is a nervous nelly who thinks SUVs are safe like the 4x4s they’re pretending to be.
Or people just want a vehicle that can carry people and stuff. I drive a 22' long pickup (often with a 30' trailer attached) and have no problem parking it.
What i hate most are the touchscreens for everything. for things i need to control while driving, like lights, a/c, etc. i need buttons. not that stupid touchscreen bs.
THANISH YOOSUF - "Who's gonna be bothering about going keyless?" - Well, anyone who spent more than 3 seconds thinking about the potential for security vulnerabilities in the cyber-centric age.
Exactly, I was waiting for him to say "just kidding" in the last part. I've never heard anyone say they miss key starting. Keyless entry though, now that's more complicated. It's convenient but the car is really easy to steal without a key by using a signal repeater, as long as your key is somewhere in range, like on your key tray by your door...
@Sunamer Z Pro thieves don't care about that. They can replicate the keys just like they can replicate keyless entry or ECU ignition codes. Most of the time they break into the owners home and get the keys that way.
Matt, I so agree with most of your points! Keep: Keyless entry - so much easier than fumbling into your pocket or handbag for keys, then selecting the correct key and having to line it up with the door lock or having to locate the correct button when you have your hands full; Keep: Tailgates and boot/trunk-lids that open/close automatically; Keep: Starter buttons (keep your key in your pocket or hanging from a belt loop); Keep: Head-up displays; Keep: Electronically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors; Keep: Hi level /Third brake lights; Keep: Sat-nav screens for sat-nav, map and navigational instructions, twin the latter with head-up display (and sat-nav screen for maybe a few other functions such as ICE display, not control). Lose: Controls placed out of sight at knee height in front of the steering wheel but below it); Lose: Headlights too bright or set too high; Lose: Running lights that come on at the front only; All running lights should come on when the car's engine/motor is turned on; Lose: LED lights anywhere, too bright at the front, too bright at the rear (too bright for the driver behind when you're sitting in the car behind and this mahoosive indicator is blinking away in front of you or the guy in front keeps his foot on the brake pedal - it's simply blinding; Lose: Fake vents that are so obviously fake; Lose: Fake exhausts although a nice trim finishing off a real exhaust does look nice; Lose: Electronic handbrakes (if you just touch the accelerator by accident they release and that's dangerous - and how do you slow stop the car if the main brakes fail?); Lose: Auto dimming mirrors (they don't dim enough) - unless you can make them dim better; Lose: Any shiny or reflective interior trim; Lose: Lane-keep-Assist that struggles to keep equidistant between the lines (ugh, it makes me motion-sick), or tries to keep you too close to one side of the lane; Lose: Those distinctly odd headlamps that come on when you go round a corner without actually shining around the corner (See below under bring back). Bring back: Real, or even quality-fake wood trim; Bring back: Mechanical handbrake; Bring back: Knobs/buttons/lever controls for HVAC systems; Bring back: Knobs on my ICE; Bring back: Mechanical mirror dimming controls; Bring back: Citroen DS's proper directional headlights; Bring back: Left foot rest; Bring Back: Headlamp dimmer switch on the floor or left foot rest; Invent: Rear fog lamps that only come on when there's actually fog; Invent: Rear screen wiper/washer for all rear screens. I could go on, but that will do for now...:-)

@@davidh9659 What's most annoying is that different car manufacturers put in different switches. When I got my driving license I started off in an Audi A3 which had an electric handbrake. It was weird at first but I got used to it. Then the driving school got a Mercedes A-Class. It also had an electric handbrake. But the switch was reversed. Meaning I'd accidentally pull on it almost everytime, because that's what you had to do in the Audi. And these brakes, at least on cars from two generations ago, take like 2-3 seconds to engage. A good old non-electric handbrake is always used the same way and always in the same position. No stupid button in some weird nonsensical place.

I love comfort and i drive my a6 all the time in comfort
I think BMW is the worst in that. Every single car should be sporty, including 5 series and 7 series
Agree, who would want a bumpy ride in the long run? At least mercedes has comfort seats as an option.
No, you get a fine for HOLDING said phone.

Actually for me:
- Prices that going higher and higher even though, the cost of production doesn't.
Disgusting.
Yeah it sucks how expensive things are these days
Agreed! The industry falsifying emissions data from exhaust gases is also far more annoying than fake exhaust pipes.
Yeah the price hikes are bad, how much more can Nissan inflate the GTR's price.
Thanks, Matt didn't know my car has fake exhausts until you told me. Now I feel embarrassed every f***ing time I go out in it.

Thank you for making the list! Helps also to comment the points a bit better :)
1 - Agree!
6 - agree
7 - agree
8 - Hell no, that can look great. Has to be within limits (e.g. not glaringly bright) but can be a nice style component.
9 - Putting 10 gears on a car that is intended to be shifted manually (e.g. flappy paddles) is mighty stupid. On all the others that's totally fine - whatever the calculation result between weight, cost, reliability, efficieny, fun turns out to be should be installed
10 - Don't like it? Don't buy it. It's just a question of style.
11 - Clearly the fault of the people buying it, not of the carmaker. Putting 3k€ for M-package on an 116i instead of upgrading the engine clearly is stupid, but if people want to...?
12 - Nah, I like it. It's not suitable if you have children in your car often or transport stuff etc., but then simply don't select it.
13 - Eco mode in an M or AMG is a bit pointless yes, but it's software that's basically free, so I get why they put it anyway
14 - No!
Plastic engine covers are so naff. When I open the hood I want to see a motor, not a slab of plastic.
I thought they had some kind of safety feature, I could be wrong tho.
oh come on don't you know this it's too quiet the car down it's not there to look good because you can't see in the first place
So is it an engine or a motor? If a motor then who cares about seeing it. Good luck trying to see a motor in an electric car. I'm saying this because I'm tired of people refer to these the incorrect way. Motors are electric, engines are combustion. Very fucking simple!

What annoys me is when cars have 1 rear foglight and 1 reverse light... Looks really fugly... Just design the lights correctly....
It's a way to cut costs, two lights on every car is like ten bucks but multiply that by half a million cars, and divide that figure among a dozen directors. Adds up to a nice bonus doesn't it?

I can imagine where the fake vents come from:
- Designers draw the car with lots of vents everywhere because it looks really fast and sporty
- Engineers actually put the design through CFD analysis and find out the grills actually make the car less aerodynamic and slower
- Designers/directors won't budge and really want them in because they look so cool
- Engineers put the grills in, but block them off ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think it’s the same with big radiators - designers are scared of cars looking boring.
With the new supra, yes, the vents are fake, but they’re designed to be removed or replace it with a legit on. They did it deliberately because they knew that the tuning community would be doing a lot with it, and since the car didn’t need all of the vents, they just blocked them off and gave you the option to use them

Touchscreens in general suck. I'm sad that at this point, Mercedes and BMW seem to be the only manufacturers who still offer alternative control methods, such as a swivel wheel or a touch pad.
15th trend: Being expensive.
Most annoying new trend for me: 3 cylinder motors in "Premium" cars.
Well, climate change is not a trend that we can ignore sadly 😕
@@lostsquirrel788 it's good because less engine means less emission? That's a way to common mistake. No, smal 3cyl engines are mostly even worse for climate. On higher speed (and I mean 90 kph or higher) the smal engine has to work very hard where a big engine runs smoothly. It's also better for the health of the engine. And changing engines more frequently because they tend to break down more often then 4 or 6 cylinders isn't good for climate either.

You need a spreadsheet to understand it FFS
The idea of doing away with badges related to engine size when you want to start making hybrids and electrics isn't bad, it makes sense to have a badge that represents a certain level of performance regardless of the powertrain.
The problem is them using completely arbitrary numbers that can't be compared to anything else for a frame of reference, when they would have gone with something more useful and logical like, say, a rough power output figure.
The touch screens for heat etc..They cause a lot of distracted driving incidents. Need knobs for heat and radio volume.
@Wuanslm so does the tesla model 3, sadly
Agree. A touch screen should be a minus on the CAP safety rating. Heat control, radio control, anything analogue is easier too control with an analogue control (knob or slider). Using a digital switch/button is just a trend, though probably cheaper too make.
Don't worry, that's what the shitty gesture controls and voice commands are for

The exhaust one is a very bad idea. I love audi for years but often they come back wrong ideas. My a4 tfsi has two real exhausts, the new one fake ones, I would not buy it no more!
Pretty sure it was brought in primarily for diesel cars as they required a downward facing exhaust to aid emissions (any advances on this information?) - this is why you still see real exhausts on quite a few petrol models still.

every point you made is on my list too.
Nathan Sparks agreed! Especially when combined with auto unlocking when grasping the doorhandle.
Nothing wrong with fannying about and sticking it in
Just make a place to put the key in like a "holder for it". Than both problems are solved. Plus, you don't need to put your key there if you don't want but you can if you don't want it in your pocket.
and then there are cars that require the key to be twisted in anyway for the start button to work

Better handling - the tuning out of body roll to a degree compared to previous decades is a good thing. Front drive cars can actually turn corners without ploughing on straight.
-unnecesary long front overhangs
Pedestrian safety regs and /or aerodynamics

The same model between generations typically get bigger.

Electric parking brakes. Living in Canada, we love handbrakes for being silly once or twice. But I’ve actually avoided a couple potential crashes when it was pure ice on the roads. If you get caught in a slide sometimes the handbrake is the only way to rotate your car to avoid something.

And here i am with no key fob, have to manually unlock the doors with the key lol.
@Adam that's why you keep it in a Faraday box.

You have to admit that it is ingenious, cut bits out of the bumper in fancy shapes, and charge more for it :)
Thank you Citroën for making cars that actually has real bumpers now.
Come to think of it what ever happened to the “5 MPH bumper” ?
With my old Grand Cherokee I could push into a snow bank. In the new model, applying even light pressure to the front skirt will quickly rip it off.
The bumper was made so your car could survive a minor collision without damage. Now it's just another part of the car that can't be damaged.
The worst of all is the auto "start-stop" system that cuts the engine every time you stop. So annoying and unnerving at busy junctions or worse still when parking. Have to turn it off every time I get in the car too.
Also harmful to the engine and turbo.
just turn it off if it's that bad
And don't forget about added maintenance costs! Batteries for the start-stop system are expensive and heavy!
depends where you driving. If you're mostly driving along inner city traffic jams it is annoying, but when you really have to wait a long time at some traffic lights, what's better than sitting in complete silence
Luckily you can turn it off

All cars need spare wheels.
The can of crap will not fix a slashed tyre.
Not if you live in LA. Just call a tow truck. ;-). Plus we get better gas milage without it. What have you done for people to slash your tires?
I agree.especially BMW 's
It's ~500 usd extra cost to fit a full size spare wheel+jack+ wrench. The only problem I see is when manufacturers don't at l;east offer the space for a proper full size spare wheel, which you can later buy a used wheel and a proper wrench, not their one feet crap.

Keep: Electronically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors;
Keep: Hi level /Third brake lights;
Keep: Sat-nav screens for sat-nav, map and navigational instructions, twin the latter with head-up display (and sat-nav screen for maybe a few other functions such as ICE display, not control).
Lose: Controls placed out of sight at knee height in front of the steering wheel but below it);
Lose: Headlights too bright or set too high;
Lose: Running lights that come on at the front only; All running lights should come on when the car's engine/motor is turned on;
Lose: LED lights anywhere, too bright at the front, too bright at the rear (too bright for the driver behind when you're sitting in the car behind and this mahoosive indicator is blinking away in front of you or the guy in front keeps his foot on the brake pedal - it's simply blinding;
Lose: Fake vents that are so obviously fake;
Lose: Fake exhausts although a nice trim finishing off a real exhaust does look nice;
Lose: Electronic handbrakes (if you just touch the accelerator by accident they release and that's dangerous - and how do you slow stop the car if the main brakes fail?);
Lose: Auto dimming mirrors (they don't dim enough) - unless you can make them dim better;
Lose: Any shiny or reflective interior trim;
Lose: Lane-keep-Assist that struggles to keep equidistant between the lines (ugh, it makes me motion-sick), or tries to keep you too close to one side of the lane;

Not sure if it's a trend but "Electronic Parking Brake" with "hill holder". I want a real hand brake in the winter.
A Subaru Forester 2006-2008 have real hand brake and hill holder..
@@TheMrHenkeman yep 2015 WRX has hill assist and good old fashion cable brake
If people can't do a hill start without rolling back they shouldn't be driving. But it seems to be the fashion amongst the brain dead that they need to roll back a foot then leer as if to say " Yeah, I got it " ......
If you've been crankin that useless old bimmer parking brake for long enough, chances are ...
1) your right arm is significantly more girthy and
2) you don't mind an electronig toggle switch to keep it in place
YES - the touchscreens are BS! clicky buttons rock - feel not look
Look is where it's at
When Matt doesn't mention Lexus for the Big Grill category
