  • Join Herbalist Yarrow Willard in exploring the harvesting, preparing and many uses this powerful healing lichen has to offer.
Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between fungi, algae, and bacteria that live on the trees.
The most well known and medicinally active of the lichens is Usnea, and as such has gained much acknowledgement for its use in gram positive bacterial infections such as streptococcus and staphylococcus. Learn about this and much more in the newest addition to the Herbal Jedi video series...

Important note... antibacterial herbs often dont impact gut bacteria negatively.. as probiotic microbes are quite different from infectious, or viral microbes.. they live in different environments.. prefer different foods.. and can have different cell walls..and anything bitter will in general promote healthy flora of the gut, despite alkaloids, phenols or aromatics present.

I love lichen. It was my favorite part in botany along with fungus and algae. We were taught a rhyme to remember that...
Freddie fungus and Annie algae took a lichen to one another...to recall what it consisted of. 😊 thanks for sharing all your groovy knowledge in these wonderful vids! ⚡🌀🌿💞

Hi Yarrow, I was telling my Dad about making a tincture of Usnea and he told me a story of when he was working in the bush and saw the deer eating Usnea and he thought if it was good enough for the deer he could eat it too! He said he chewed a lot of it!
My story is that my Usnea tincture is only 5 days old but I've have this nagging cough and phlegm and raw throat and tried it anyway and it eased symptoms right away. Thanks for what you do and all the work that goes into it. I can't stop telling everyone to watch your videos. Maybe that is why my throat is sore!?!

Love your approach and spirit connection with this magical world of ours!! I was sorry to hear Stephen Buhner died recently but I know he had a good departure and was in ritual with loved ones at the end. I've always loved this lichen but only recently learned of it's medicinal properties. Been having a cold this week and went out in the yard today to find the wind had blown down some nice branches with enough usnea branches for me to make a tea using a technique from Stephen's book on herbal antibiotics. Dried the usnea gently in a warm oven cut and ground a couple of teaspoons worth of powder. Added a bit of alcohol to moisten that - left covered for 30 minutes - added 12 oz. of boiling water - steeped for 20 minutes. Taking 2 ozs. twice a day - already feeling the energy of this ancestral lichen and my symptoms are gone with just two doses - Magic!! Thanks for all of your teachings Yarrow! Much love, Magnus

It can also be eaten once steamed down in to a mass. Apparently interior natives would harvest close to 60 lbs of usnea a year to steam and dry for winter foods!

Yarrow, I love your herb videos so much! Been watching for years… And I miss them! I know that something happened for you during Covid time, and your videos seemed to stop or at least slow way down. Please know that what you contribute to the world and the herbal community is so very valuable, and your beautiful perspective and energy combining practical, scientific knowledge with more esoteric, metaphysical, felt-sense experience is unique and needed! Thank you for your teaching offerings to us all 🙏🏽✨🌿.

There is a way to test Usnea to be sure it is the correct kind since there are many. Take an arm of the plant and stretch it slowly. As it stretches' there should be an elastic band within that will stretches before it breaks. This is the best and strongest kind. Ive used if for 20 years for many infections that would have landed me in the ER but this saved me this expense.

been using for wound care for years, for large infected dirty wounds i take and stuff it wet or dry in and on the wound and its antimicrobial function works well. leave it there all day or till the next and when wound care/bandage change again the used usnea acts to debride the wound as you remove it helping the healing process : ) here we call it "mothers hair"

Thank you for this video. In my first application of Usnea research, I cleaned up a downed cherry tree and saved a pillow case of usnea. The dried harvest was divided. I made a 100 proof extract in a pint size jar. The rest six months later went into a slow water extract(?)-in a gallon jar with distilled in a crock pot on low for 2 days. I wanted it to be shelf stable. I mix the 1 pint extract and two pints strained lichen porage . My challenge is 40 year old growth toe nail fungus. Wish me luck!
