- Join Herbalist Yarrow Willard in exploring the harvesting, preparing and many uses this powerful healing lichen has to offer.
Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between fungi, algae, and bacteria that live on the trees.
The most well known and medicinally active of the lichens is Usnea, and as such has gained much acknowledgement for its use in gram positive bacterial infections such as streptococcus and staphylococcus. Learn about this and much more in the newest addition to the Herbal Jedi video series...

Important note... antibacterial herbs often dont impact gut bacteria negatively.. as probiotic microbes are quite different from infectious, or viral microbes.. they live in different environments.. prefer different foods.. and can have different cell walls..and anything bitter will in general promote healthy flora of the gut, despite alkaloids, phenols or aromatics present.
I love lichen. It was my favorite part in botany along with fungus and algae. We were taught a rhyme to remember that...
Freddie fungus and Annie algae took a lichen to one another...to recall what it consisted of. 😊 thanks for sharing all your groovy knowledge in these wonderful vids! ⚡🌀🌿💞
Haha, yes I'm "lichen" it! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Yarrow, I was telling my Dad about making a tincture of Usnea and he told me a story of when he was working in the bush and saw the deer eating Usnea and he thought if it was good enough for the deer he could eat it too! He said he chewed a lot of it!
My story is that my Usnea tincture is only 5 days old but I've have this nagging cough and phlegm and raw throat and tried it anyway and it eased symptoms right away. Thanks for what you do and all the work that goes into it. I can't stop telling everyone to watch your videos. Maybe that is why my throat is sore!?!
This sounds a good one as a tea for lymph infection
the best videos on herbal knowledge for a budding herbalist like myself. thank you for your in depth talks about each herb and its blessings
Love your approach and spirit connection with this magical world of ours!! I was sorry to hear Stephen Buhner died recently but I know he had a good departure and was in ritual with loved ones at the end. I've always loved this lichen but only recently learned of it's medicinal properties. Been having a cold this week and went out in the yard today to find the wind had blown down some nice branches with enough usnea branches for me to make a tea using a technique from Stephen's book on herbal antibiotics. Dried the usnea gently in a warm oven cut and ground a couple of teaspoons worth of powder. Added a bit of alcohol to moisten that - left covered for 30 minutes - added 12 oz. of boiling water - steeped for 20 minutes. Taking 2 ozs. twice a day - already feeling the energy of this ancestral lichen and my symptoms are gone with just two doses - Magic!! Thanks for all of your teachings Yarrow! Much love, Magnus
It can also be eaten once steamed down in to a mass. Apparently interior natives would harvest close to 60 lbs of usnea a year to steam and dry for winter foods!
I appreciate you taking the time to tell us about the elasticity of usnea. Now I can positively ID it here in the forests of the Puget Sound. Thank you !
Bellingham WA area my friend 👋
LoL Tacoma Wa here 👀 .
Does it grow in West Virginia
Seattle here, it's EVERYWHERE.
Yarrow, I love your herb videos so much! Been watching for years… And I miss them! I know that something happened for you during Covid time, and your videos seemed to stop or at least slow way down. Please know that what you contribute to the world and the herbal community is so very valuable, and your beautiful perspective and energy combining practical, scientific knowledge with more esoteric, metaphysical, felt-sense experience is unique and needed! Thank you for your teaching offerings to us all 🙏🏽✨🌿.
Greeting from Oregon , you are the BEST teacher!!
There is a way to test Usnea to be sure it is the correct kind since there are many. Take an arm of the plant and stretch it slowly. As it stretches' there should be an elastic band within that will stretches before it breaks. This is the best and strongest kind. Ive used if for 20 years for many infections that would have landed me in the ER but this saved me this expense.
I can never learn enough from you.
Herbal Jedi we just love you! Jumping on your creations you guys share with us, it makes me to feel great, and it will make me to be able to nterbeing. Thank you for the love and chi!
Been sick (head cold) for a week..so I will be a good guinea pig for this :) Thank you for sharing your wisdom in such a light hearted fun way..when your sick everything can imitate you..but this was very uplifting ..thanks again :)
Did it help? I been using turkey tail mushroom tinture since November and been no colds or anything
@@DTA-me3kv, Wild Black Walnut Hull tincture, a broad spectrum pathogen killer, anti-microbial, anti-viral & anti-bacterial. We all take it & puppies & ducks & chickens. No infections or sickness, saved all my birds from protozoa's, that killed many before I knew.
I have always loved Usnea...although for many years, before I started learning about medicnal plants and herbal medicine, I had no clue how important it was. Thanks for sharing! :)
This was fascinating.... I'm a fungi educational binge today.
I had to come back and watch this, I have an ample supply!
been using for wound care for years, for large infected dirty wounds i take and stuff it wet or dry in and on the wound and its antimicrobial function works well. leave it there all day or till the next and when wound care/bandage change again the used usnea acts to debride the wound as you remove it helping the healing process : ) here we call it "mothers hair"
You speak my language... Thank you! 😊🐾🌿🌲
Awesome vid 👌 the best channel on YT
Thankyou for the blessings, and for checking out the videos.
I've read that Usnea distinguishes between good and bad bacteria, leaving the gut balanced.

Hello, well that is great, just discovering your channel, a friendly hello from Ireland..slan...
Thanks you great stuff I'm likeing it.
your fantastic thanks x
I just collected usnea in the forest today....lots growing on the alders. I always understood that it was a great anti-viral. That's what I learned, anyway. I'm also drawn to using it with calendula and other soothing herbs infused into coconut oil for a facial moisturizer for over 50 skin.
I love watching every video. Thank you for your teachings. Love and Hugs from Maine.
How sweet. I'm in Maine too.♥️
Great stuff and info.
Really enjoying all your videos - very informative - I'm learning a lot. I live in Southern BC near Kootenay Lake. I have started making some of my own tinctures and salves. It's nice to see the plants available in BC, how to identify them, and how to harvest. Many thanks.
You're Awesome...!
Amazing video!!!
Wow...that was great thanks mate....I need to learn more about the natural medicines here in Australia
Thank you for this video. In my first application of Usnea research, I cleaned up a downed cherry tree and saved a pillow case of usnea. The dried harvest was divided. I made a 100 proof extract in a pint size jar. The rest six months later went into a slow water extract(?)-in a gallon jar with distilled in a crock pot on low for 2 days. I wanted it to be shelf stable. I mix the 1 pint extract and two pints strained lichen porage . My challenge is 40 year old growth toe nail fungus. Wish me luck!
Good luck any results?
How did the usnea work with the foot fungus?
It is working, I changed the experiment however. uh oh. I added Thyme oil to the mix. I'm impatient. Forgive me. @@yahushaismyshepherd1179
I am so happy I found this video, very informative! Now, I cant wait to watch the rest of your videos. The added tip on the author, Stephen Harrod Buhner, was much appreciated...I cant wait to read some of his work, he sounds interesting! Keep up the awesome work.
Terry Willard’s son, Herbal Jedi on the Shaolin-Ninja properties of Usnea: Love it!!
I just learned about your videos and couldn't be happier. thank you very much for helping us to live better lives through more natural means. we need more people like you. I was just introduced to Usnes and gifted some and cant wait to try out some recipes for tinctures. I think I will add it to birch polypore also . any videos on that one by chance. ?
blessings. marilyn
Great video and thank you.
Thanks for watching
Amazing Canada
Well done, enjoyed the info and the video :)
I love you!
that hat is art
Mr. Willard, I stumbled upon one of your videos and have spent the last week watching all of your videos, I have found them fun, informative and exceptionally done thank you. For a person to really be able to do a video as you have you really do have to be as one with nature and you do that and then some. I would like to talk to you some time, I think it would be a wonderful learning experience for me as well for you on some aspects. Do you have hidden videos on the many different types of ferns and the many uses of them?
Great video! You were recommend by Correne Omland of Spiraea Herbs in Ontario. I have oodles of Usnea on our property in 6+ acres. I live in the US in the Pacific Northwest. I am very interested in making tinctures & decoction as well as powders now that I understand the benefit for healing of wounds. Thank you 😊 - your video is fun and informative.
