We asked my dad why he would mow around this huge weed in the middle of the yard. He told us about mullein and that his mom would give them a tea made of leaves when they had colds and flu. Even though he never made it himself, he kept that plant in honor of his mother.

I can relate, I have several inherited and hand me down plants as well as some started on my own. Had old school country dairy farmer grandparents and being able to truly “live off the land” was a big source of inspiration, motivation and pride for them. If the poor didn’t make food, the rich would have to eat their money.

@MrIgottap ha! Good one. "Source of pride" I'm feelin' it, too, just bc I chose to mow around this "weed" for the past couple of yrs, just to see what it would turn in to. After 2 yrs of drought, in MN, there's been abundant rain for weeks, now, so the 4 Mulleins in my front yard look quite healthy! One has grown to 5.5', the others to 3'. Just this week, I learned of the med properties & will harvest. ptL! This is an exc video!

The wife and I have been harvesting Mullien for a couple years, mainly just the leaves which we would dry and use for tea, smudge, and smoking mixture. We really enjoyed watching this video which touched on the use of the flowers - something that we just simply didn't consider while harvesting the leaves! Today, the wife and I went out and harvested about 2 full Mason jars of just the flowers, going to follow your lead and make some medicine!

Last year I rescued a baby mullein form a lady who was killing them as weeds. I educated her in the value of the plant and she left two to mature and flower. My baby has grown to a 7 ft tall beauty and is flowering now but the leaves are like lace-work due to the mullein moth . It is the sole food source for this moth and I had quite a nursery of caterpillars but that's ok because the moth is a prolific night pollinator. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and deep wisdom, Yarrow.

hippy - hippie |ˈhipē| (also hippy) (esp. in the 1960s) a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair and wearing beads, associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs."
A sub culture started by MK Ultra and the CIA in Laurel Canyon
stoner |ˈstōnər| 1 informal a person who regularly takes drugs, esp. marijuana : I was a real stoner when I was a teenager.
2 [in combination ] Brit. a person or thing that weighs a specified number of stone : a couple of 16-stoners.
why do people insist on applying labels on people which were created by the powers that control us? This is nature, it's herbology, and anyone can learn how to it's old as the hills, it not a hippie's nor a stoner forte. It's not too likely anyone is going to save humanity when we can't can stop perpetuating the roles and labels assigned us..

There is another use for Mullen that I think you left out of the video. The dried stalk of mullein plant, the inner trunk, was used to start fires by friction. Hand twirl the trunk against a flat board with a notch cut in it. This makes a good hot powder that turns into a glowing ember. Then you put that in a prepared bird's nest and blow and you have fire. Look up hand drill fire.

delighted to have run into this video. Due to the Canadian wildfire smoke arriving in Ohio end of June 2023 I found myself wide awake at 3am gasping for every breath. The smoke was not visible and news did not adequately warn us to stay inside while this was occurring. I turned 60 this year and the after effects of covid which I caught real bad in Oct 2019 has diminished my energy level by half. Thankfully my A/C and Austin air filter spared me some of the misery I had on that first day thinking it was tree/grass pollen or some unknown malady. On my daily 4 mile walk up the road I noticed a super healthy plant which caught my attention. No more than a couple days later the top had been harvested by someone who beat me to it. Luckily I found several more tops not too far away which I grabbed up and brought back to my own garden. I read tea from the dried leaves is the easiest way to use it but am glad I researched it a bit before diving in. The tops I picked were by then dried and full of seeds which I read can be toxic. I nearly tried a cup of mullein seed tea which I see can be narcotic. Surprise. Always read or listen to an extremely cool and informed gentleman like this guy before taking the plunge. I'll be listening to your other videos real soon now I'm certain. THANK YOU

I'm so happy I found your site. I've been eating 'weeds' for a while - a friend we in a Russian Prison camp at one time - she was a child and they had nothing to eat - so they'd reach through small openings in the fencing around the camp and eat lamb's quarters. She told me this many years ago and I became fascinated by 'weeds' and how to use them - purslane came up all over our yard one year - just tons of it and a Native American friend told me that when a plant does this, it means you 'need' it - it was along time ago, but I had breast cancer, gallbladder explosion and other health issues then and I can't help but wonder if my land wasn't trying to tell me something.

She looked at me like I was from another planet. I told her that the worst that could happen is that it won't work.
Then next day she came in to work smiling, clear, and saying "it really worked". (Of course it works. I don't recommend anything to anyone, unless I know it works).

Another excellent video! I started my mullein flower oil this morning before watching this but forgot to wilt the flowers first, thanks for reminding me. I'll start a second batch and compare them.
One trick I learned to help infused oils keep longer is to add a little salt (I use celtic) after the herb has been strained out. If there is any moisture, it grabs onto it and takes it to the bottom, then you can pour the oil off & leave the watery part behind.
I use mullein for swollen glands, too. As a compress, or the oil topically or the tincture of the leaves internally. It's also helpful for groin injuries.I make mullein cough syrup by the jar & keep it handy for coughs/irritation from the dry air we have from heating with wood.
I use the root a LOT. I make a decocted tincture, then put that in a spray bottle. I have a hip joint that plays up on me occasionally, if I spray that on at night and rub it in, it never fails to help the joint to slide back into place. Good for a 'crick in the neck' as well. It smells like vanilla, delicious. The excellent herbalist jim mcdonald uses root tincture by the drop, internally, for similar purpose.

Absolutely love this video, and you’re right, mullein has worked for me ! I’ve been using it for at least 10 years and the Mullien ear oil works wonders for ear infections . I would get compacted ear wax that would lead to infections and this has worked wonders. I used to flush the wax out of my ears when they would get clogged and then add a few drops of Mullien & Garlic or Mullien & St. John’s wort oil. Then, to prevent the wax from building up I’d use a couple drops a week to keep the wax soft. When I had ear infections, I’d put a dropper full in my ear and then use some cotton to keep the oil in my ear. Works amazingly well, but just a tip, if you warm the oil in the bottle first ( between your hands or under some warm water) it will work even better and be more soothing.
I’ve also used Mullien tincture to help with pink eye. The alcohol does sting though! So, I would use a drop of the tincture first then flush the eye with water, and would repeat that one more time. It usually only took one time (one day) for the pink eye to improve or go away completely. Sometimes it would take two days, but the symptoms were significantly better the second day. I also used the tincture for allergies. I would take a dropper full of the tincture each day when my allergies were bad, and it really helped. I still use the oil for my ears to this day, and have helped so many friends and family with ear pain over the years, and they’re all pleasantly surprised when it works 😉. I stopped using the tincture, though, because my allergies had improved by changing some things as he mentioned- cutting back on dairy. Hope this helps someone else out there with ear pain !

I haven't tried it with Mullein , but I have made Chamomile tea, cooled it in the fridge and rinsed my eye out with the tea then placed a cool tea bag on the eye for 5 minutes. It works really well to soothe the irritation, but the Mullein works better for me in terms of infection and instant soothing. Never thought to make the 'eye tea' with Mullein as I never had the fresh herb/plant just the tincture, but next time I will try making a tea. Thanks for the recommendation ! * oh and just as a side note for anyone else, I ended up finding that diluting the tincture in some water first and then cleaning the eye with that tintcture /water mixture was also effective and didn't sting so much.

Nice! I've been using honey water for pink eye. I get very agitated and I do itch so its a wonder that it works on me and I forget about it not after too long and stop itching.

Our Dad (a herbalist) made this ear oil , & even though he’s been gone for years, our family has found that this mullein oil works WAY better than any prescription drug’s we’ve ever tried…..so we still make it…….& keep it in the fridge……

This video sent me on a Mullein journey in 2020. I got to use the roots in a tincture to help fix some of my Dad's prostate issues. The leaves helped my lungs get better after Covid. I hope the seeds I spread at my house grow up this summer.

Helps to be in an herb garden, for sure. I don't have that luxury. So I find a lot of herbs off the trails that I walk. I have an app on my phone, called "All Trails". It shows all the known trails near you. There are so many in my location I don't think I can ever walk them all. But, the idea is that I usually find some herb/plant on the edges of these trails. I then can mark the GPS location of the herb/plant or tree. So I have a ready made database of where my herbs/plants or trees of interest are. My herb garden is on the wild trails of New Hampshire.

It is no coincidence that I started being curious about this plant because my body needs it for multiple reasons. I remember my mother having me dig these up out of the garden while weeding as a kid and as I looked at the roots something told me this was not a bad plant. I spotted some today on a drive up to Chelan so I am taking a garbage bag with me next time so I can harvest a couple and see how my body processes it. I am thinking this will work well for me because my body seems to want it lol. I would love to see some information about using this specifically in treating lung cancer. Thank you for sharing this information, I enjoyed watching your video.

I have 3 week old batch of garlic submerged in olive oil in my fridge & now it's headed for the trash. Read that it's safer to store it 'frozen' which is what I'll do from now on.
