Fellow Tennessee herbalist here, I'm out in Cosby but spent 20 years in Knoxville area. Like your content, it's much needed! I'm one of those that prefers not using alcohol distilled from grains. I only use the highest grade potato vodka myself. Keep up the good work though....this is an art/practice whose time has definitely come!

I've been taking a dropper full of Usnea nightly for about 8 years. I used to get 2 or 3 horrible chest illness' per year. For 8 years I haven't had any chest issues. I soak mine in Vodka for at least a month, but I have some half gallon bottles of Usnea that have been soaking for a couple of years. Great stuff!

NO- do not use this as a tonic. You can take this for a seven days MAXIMUM. Then you must holiday it for 4 WEEKS. This allows your liver to flush it.
Yes it is a broad spectrum powerful antibiotic to be used with infection.
It must be double extracted. Fungi, Lichen's cell wall is made up of chitin. To extract the medicinal properties you must break down or warp that chitin barrier to ensure bio availability. To do this you must use heat. Far better to use a higher heat then a simmer since it will not break down the chitin. Chitin requires 300 degrees. Higher heat, reduce it by half, add more water to bring it back up to level. Reduce like this 2 more x's bringing it back up to level each time. Any liquid missing after last reduction before combining with your alcohol extraction to make a 50-50, you would just add more water.

Thanks for the info - I just got some reindeer moss today and would like some usnea also and will be on the lookout for that after the next storm. I love lichen - it's so pretty and interesting it can use be used for dye.

Never heard of this before a friend gifted me a hat full of it today! Yours was the first information I sought.
Thanks for a complete explaination of the tincture/decoction process and the values of the medicine.
    Straight forward and helpful.

Bearded Lichen only grows in areas where the air is pure. It does tend to be found on very old balsam trees up here in the Northern Midwest.

I watched another and she said to do the water boil part at least 3 times. It makes it strong with the water soluble part of the usnea. Also to fill it to the top during the 6 to 8 week cycle to keep oxygen out as much as possible which keeps the color from getting so dark as well as keeping it covered.

Ok I’ve heard that you can put the usnea in a crockpot with the water and cook on low for 24 hours, then remove the uses and measure the liquid amount. Add equal amount of ever clear back into mic total mix and let sit in a cool dark place for 6 weeks.

Does it matter how long since it fell from the tree? I’ve got some that’s been sealed in a glass bowl for a while and I found some outside that has started to go brown?

Have some a friend made me in brown bottle with dropper. Found when the room temp increased over 80 degrees F, it became gaseous and stained my ceiling. Thinking cooler place storage best. Any suggestions?

Let's say I accidentally burned my usnea during the simmer part of the process. Like maybe burnt it to a crisp--FLAME burnt... Would it be ok to just start with fresh Usnea and boil that down in the same manner and add that to the alcohol tincture? Is it going to be any different than if I had used the original usnea?

I’m so upset. I had a nice dark color before I added the water extraction and then when I added it, it turned a light milky looking color. What did I do wrong? It doesn’t look right. 😢

I don’t think your going to drink it. Micro dosing by dropper and taking it during an illness. I’d be extremely worried about pharmaceuticals toxicity before I would plant matter.
