He also mentions perthes disease and osteoarthritis of the hip joint. John also discusses how the hip flexors (psoas) are involved and the iliofemoral ligaments and how they cause an inhibition to the gluteus maximus (Gmax) through the hip extension firing pattern test. Janda and the lower crossed syndrome is also mentioned and how this can cause lower back, facet or disc pathology of L5 or L5 and involve the nerve roots.
    John also shows you in his other videos to assess the nerve root level of the adductors (obturator nerve through L3 reflex), patella tendon (femoral nerve through L4 reflex), semitendinosus (tibial / sciatic nerve of L5 reflex) and Achilles / plantar (tibial nerve of sciatic through S1 reflex) and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with Clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury.

    Oh sweet mother of heavenly relief, thank you.
    I run in the mornings and ended up completely destroying my patella (as far as I am aware), and then I kept pushing myself to continue for weeks after because I ain't the smartest cookie. It got to a point where I was in excruciating pain when I did literally anything during the day (a nightmare for someone who works contruction). But when I put this on, the pain lowered significantly and immediately. Thank you so much for this.

      Hi Shahbaz, I took a 5 month break to rest my knee, which is what my doctor recommended. I am going to get an MRI since it still hurts now that I'm back in the gym (I'm a muay thai/kickboxer). Just have to rest it and hope it doesn't turn into Patellar Tendonosis, which is the tendon tearing, which is where my doc thinks mine is at, but won't know until the MRI is done. If it is torn, then I will get surgery, which as he said is a 3 month recovery time, so it's not too bad. There is also an injection they can give you to repair it, but it's not covered by insurance, he said it costs around $700.
      Stretch out your hamstrings as much as often as you can, it helps a bit. Dead lifts, quad exercises really help it too. But if it's torn it's just gonna not heal without surgery or the injection.
      Good luck my friend.

      Dear Marcellius, take rest and feel better, i talk to my physiotherapist
      yesterday again, he said nothing to worry about, my pain is due to
      excessive running, i was overweight about 110kg and lose weight to 85kg by running, so he said its stress on your knee due to excessive running, so i am suggested for a 10 days complete rest or a 1 month rest, if i still feel the pain afterwards i will also do further checkup and MRI

    This is the best explained application video of kinesio tape. The fact of streching it completely to feel how looks the tape streched 100% and then release a bit to have at 50% is very helpfull. Thanks a lot, i will try it next saturday for a obstacle race, it does not hurt a lot but is unpleasant. Thanks

    The tape can help off load the pain to your knee especially during the hiking, worth a try....Regards to stress fracture you can apply the 'fan' type of kinesiology taping over the area of pain as that area is probably a bit swollen (I presume it is over the metatarsals). Look at my ankle oedema taping and apply in a similar way, leave on for 4/5 days, have one day rest and re apply for another 4/5 days, you can use an ice pack directly over the tape as well to control pain and swelling.

    if you have a confirmed meniscal tear then surgery is an option depending on how large the tear is and how much restriction you have to full knee flexion and extension. If you can perform these two movements at the knee then maybe the meniscus is not involved. Kinesiology taping will help reduce the symptoms but it will not help the cause, especially if its a mechanical issue with the knee.

  • @JohnGibbons
    @JohnGibbons  11 років тому +20

    There is no reserach to show that the tape will weaken the knee, remember that the tape works well in conjunction with other aspects of physical therapy, like rehab exercise and soft tissue techniques. good luck

      Form what I understand, squatting is one of the main exercises that would help overcome the need for this, but for me, squatting instantly throws my knee off track. Is there a particular way to tape to assist during squatting? That way I can build the strength I need to no longer need the tape at all. Is this same taping method one that would work well for squatting?

    Kat, this taping technique should help with the pain and it will probably help with the control of the patella alignment and the taping is also very good if you have some swelling. The tape is working as you are sleeping as it is lifting the skin and causing the body to heal so you can leave on for at least 4 days, try it and see. Good luck

    This technique could work well to off load the pain in your knee, just remember that the taping technique is to treat the symptom and not the cause so you might need a therapist to have a look at your knee if it does not improve with the tape.

  • @JohnGibbons
    @JohnGibbons  11 років тому +17

    Thanks for the comments, Kinesiology Taping is different from other taping techniques as most of them are preventative or stability type of taping. The technique I demonstrate in the video for the knee, you are able to leave on for 5 days with no side effects and it might help the muscle recover (if muscular pain) rather than weakening it. Hope that helps

    My daughter was a gymnast for five years. She is hyperextended both legs...often locking at the knees. Now at nearly 16 she has started golf lessons and is going to be on the school team. (Her PT coach is exceptional...often yells "knees" to her when in class.) She is now complaining of sore knees from practicing her golf swing, where she HAS to be bent at the knees. She's not used to twisting her torso with knees bent. I plan to take her to sports doc, who has treated her in the past for other injuries including stress fracture of her left tibia. I am going to use this P-tape method on her tongiht before she goes to sleep. Any other recommendations? Thank you! HS

    Hi John - thanks for the video. I've had recurring patellar inflammation (lower) off and on for ~3 years. Dr and PT say it's soft tissue inflammation. I do jumping drills, sled walks, leg press. Inflammation seems to kick in when I do decelerated jumps (jumping down from the box). I've stopped those. I'm 47 years old and have been lifting, etc for a long time. Do you feel that your tape will assist with my healing process (decrease inflammation), or should I just stretch, ice, and gradually get back into weights when the pain subsides? With a knee wrap/jumpers knee band/sleeve, the pain is pretty much non-existant. Frustrating injury! Thanks for advice!

    Fantastic video, but I wonder if you think this could be my solution. I play volleyball, and I am waiting to see a physio.
    I have patellar tendinosis on my right knee. Plus parameniscal cyst with adjacent intrasubstance signal in the posterior horn in the medial meniscus, which suggests a pair meniscal injury with no displaced meniscal fragment.
    Would you recommend straps like this or using the standard jumper's knee brace (the little strip that you wrap around your knee)?

    Hi John, I've been using this video (& another for my wrist) for over a year now, a 50+ sufferer of inflammatory arthritis. Still like to watch & hear you, even though I should know how to apply it after so many applications! Today I'm suffering with swelling at the back of the knee (definitely fluid, possible baker's cyst) In the past I've ridden it out til it's gone but I'd like to use my K tape to sort it. Any chance you'd consider doing a video so I can follow your instructions? Good work & big thanks x

    John, I suffer from a swollen knee joint, nothing physical wrong but seems that the patella tracks to the lateral side. Been given exercises to try and strengthen the inner quad muscle but I play football (as a goalkeeper) and struggle when playing lots of games in that kicking the ball causes pretty bad swelling after games. If I followed this procedure would it help alleviate the swelling? I know you cant give a 'for sure' answer but it looks to me it might help. Just dont want to use the 'wrong' taping method!

Could this kind of taping prevent that happening? I only have one semi long run left before race day and would like to try it out. Since then there is considerable swelling in the lower region of the patella and he experiences pain from the area when used. Hi John, my 12yr old daughter has a very tight ITB which causes her knee pain. Her Physio taped her knee and I have to renew it every 2 days. He only used 2 strips of tape, one medial with 50% stretch and and one lateral with 25% stretch. Would it be beneficial to use 3 like in your video? I watched your video on how to tape for runners knee and that's definitely not what our Physio did. I am confused now!
