- Invincible is an animated show that renewed my faith in superhero adaptations, turning out to be far better than most so-called 'mature' movies out there today. Join me as I break it down.

What's happening to The Boys... ua-cam.com/users/voughtintl
This series shows 2 times what should have happened in Wandavision. You know the scene.
Stargirl, on Prime, is good enough that I am watching season 2. It isnt perfect, but it is funny, and... charming? I am a bit of a miserable bastard, but I am enjoying it. 8/10 for entertainment, and where a 10 is Late Night TV, it is about a 3 on the woke scale.
When Omni-Man’s betrayal of the Guardians is more shocking than Rian Johnson’s attempt to subvert expectations in The Last Jedi
I've never read the comic books for invincible, but I hear that this twist happened much later in the story. The shows idea of doing first episode I thought was brilliant.
TLJ is the perfect example of how to destroy a beloved character.
*zing*
Yeah, that scene is comparable to GoT's Red Wedding, and alone is more memorable than all new SW trilogy.
I saw omni man's betrayal coming before I watched the show.
When Omni man says his wife, Invincible’s mother is really more like a pet to him…right to his face. Well that was a great scene.
Also she heard him through the earpiece. And the look on her face...
Everybody just had to watch as They both took a heavy emotional crit.
To be fair, I’m not sure Mark is any more than that to Amber.
@@bunnywithakeyboard7628 Are you talking about "It's all about me and my feelings and even though I knew you were a superhero I still demanded your constant attention" Amber?
It was so stupid. Just like omniman suddenly caring about his son with a deus ex machinae flashback of a decades old baseball game. What if his son lost that game? Everything about the end was stupid other than Cecil and the presentation.
It really pissed me off that Amber says, “I can’t believe you left us!”
Then, ten minutes later she says, “Of course I knew you were Invincible.”
🤦♂️
Yeah wtf
Yeah the writing for her character there makes no sense and felt extremely forced from the writers.
If the writers want us to hate her then they're doing a pretty good job. Hopefully Mark will get fed up of her and then end up with *spoiler*
@@avidmcplayer4942 As long as they follow the comic it's all good. They stretched Amber's part out some and made her more preachy but you can guess you got spoiler correct.
she knew but she wanted HIM to come clean
The choice they made to remove all music from the scene where Omni man goes against the guardians was truly incredible. It was such a shattering departure from the typical superhero cartoon. I will never forget that scene, and I can think of no other superhero cartoon scene that had that impact on me. It’s an incredible show, and they executed it phenomenally. Definitely worth the watch if you haven’t seen it.
I had the exact same feeling. Unreal 👌🏻
It happens a lot. It's a common method of cinematography
I know cartoons and anime are different but if you like no music during fight scene, check out naruto vs sasuke final fight, obito vs kakashi... I can't remember other anime that did this on top of my head but this is definitely not something new
@@aziffikmal I love anime but naruto is boiled sewage.

This series is amazingly well-written. Except for Amber, who's made to say some contradicting things, and her role in season 1 seems to be that of creating drama for Mark. The scene in which she tells him she knows he's Invincible, yet still dumps him for it, was so nonsensical.
But to be fair, women cannot live without drama. So it was realistic...
@@downburst3236 bro you cant say those things on the internet xD
Yeah, Amber had no chill.
It makes perfect sense.
Just because you know why someone does something, doesn't mean you can deal with it. Plus it was also about him not telling her the truth. There being a lack of trust on his side is a proper reason to call the whole thing off.
@@slaapt no, sorry, she didn't try to see it from his perspective. Didn't try to understand that he was following the rules about secret identity. Didn't even really try to talk it out with him either as far as I recall.
There was only a single thing in the entire serie that really grinded my gears, and it was their version of Amber. Man, the show suffered because of her.
Yeah I liked her at first but she got progressively worse as the series went on. She broke up with Mark because she thought he ran away when they were in danger yet later when he reveals himself as Invincible she claims to have known all along?
THEN WHY THE FUCK WERE YOU MAD AT HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN YOU KNEW HE WAS SAVING YOUR FUCKING LIFE
That was some real dumb shit right there
I despise her character both in show and comics.
what really pisses me off is that shes like the only main black character in the show and they fucked hers up smh
I think Amber in the comics wasn't particularly strong either. I understand the desire to try and make her more interesting. It may not have worked, but I get it.
Yeah up until she revealed that she knew all along, I was on her side since her acting that way made sense if she really didn't know.
However that one line gives a whole new context to her character that effectively ruined and turned her from an ok character to one of the worst.
Hope it gets retconned or something (like saying that she was just pretending to know all along just to appear strong at the time or something like that).
It wont save the fuck up but atleast they can try to mitigate some of the damage...... Though I doubt that would happen
"What will you have after 500 years!? “
“You, Dad. I would still have you"
Such an amazing and gut wrenching scene
Cringe. They had to drop in a five minute flashback out of nowhere to give omni man a reason to spare mark. This show is written as poorly as a disney product
@@DarranKern Ok Karen i guess a father reflecting on his sons childhood is OUT of nowhere when said father and son are fighting.

@@DarranKern yeah a father and son bond is TOTALLY cringe /end sarcasm

6:40 One thing I love about the final battle between invincible & omni man when compared to other superhero battles is that invincible gets thoroughly fucked up, physically and emotionally, whereas most superhero fights are typically just two invulnerable dudes throwing eachother thru buildings with little to no effect on them physically
It’s also great how in the end, Mark won because he couldn’t be broken mentally. He stayed true to his beliefs and self, even on the brink of death, whereas Omni-Man wasn’t phased in the slightest physically, but his emotional instability got the better of him in the end, causing him to flee. This only works because of the established relationship they have, and it works beautifully. Winning a fight isn’t always about whom outperforms whom with their fists, and staying tough, not giving in, no matter the punishment endured, can be much more effective in the end
Watch the 2018 film death of Superman, brilliant.

@@isheetfromaswhole3657 what
@Robert Brown you do realize Omni-Man isn’t human at all, right? It was always his species’ plan to rule earth or wipe it out if need be, he’s never cared about humans, he even says so, going so far as to refer to his wife as a ‘pet’. I never got the feeling from the show that we should automatically look up to him just because on the surface he’s basically Superman. The first episode gets rid of that mindset pretty fricken quickly too. The only hint at him having some sense of empathy is for his son when he says “you dad, I’ll still have you” - after beating him within a minuscule of his life. I think you completely missed the whole point of this character 😂
So I finally got around to watching it, and Amber is the most insufferable and unworthy character ever committed to screen. Aside from that, it was pretty good.
I think it's okay to hate her. Young love is usually pretty dumb and Mark is still learning what he wants in a relationship.
Yeah, she's awful. Worst part of the show, easily.
@@evilparadigm That's true. Apparently Amber was totally different in the comics, and I'm starting to think that some higher up told the producers to make it 'diverse' and so made a seemingly diverse person that's actually toxic as a response. That, or recent medias jeep portraying 'diverse is good' and responded to that. I refuse to believe that the producers, who made a good and nuanced show, didn't put Amber's detestability there on purpose lol
@@Пинагод Kind of fucked up if they intentionally made a black character a shitty person. If i had to guess though, they didn't mean it to be a racist thing and the character they made shitty as a protest to the diversity quota just so happened to be black.

What I expected: Animated The Boys
What I got: A well written subversion of several superhero tropes, that plays with the expectations set by weaker written elements of the genre and uses that against the viewer. Behind the saturday morning cartoon façade lies a deep and complex look at realism versus idealism, morality and the human condition. I could go on and on about how simple set ups like Mark's parents having such a loving and open marriage makes Omnimans later deceptions and her just knowing somethings wrong that much more tension filled and believable. You get invested in every single character and the show does an amazing job of giving you just enough tidbits of backstory and motivations for minor characters to get you invested without slowing down the pacing or confusing the watcher.
It is very familiar to the Boys, but I think its better. Its easier to follow and I dont like Huey. He is just worthless. Like if C3PO became a real boy. Just complains and frets.

@@bunnywithakeyboard7628 I don’t think so, it was just a personal observation. Feel free to quote it.
It is certainly a recurring theme for the great bearded one.
Very good summary of the dilemma and the unavoidable issues that would arise.
One quibble thought, it isn't a trope, it's actually a serious moral question. Trope is more of a cliche or storytelling convenience. This question is the very heart of the matter.
"There is no Good or Evil, only what you are willing to accept."
People are willing to accept some pretty horrible things because they believe they are powerless to change it, and equally powerless people willing to launch a one man crusade because it doesn't matter if they can change it, they're not going to accept those terrible things are simply allowed to happen.
The voice acting from the guy (J.K. Simmons) who played Omni Man carried this from good across the line into great.
And then it transformed into Greatness

Eve: "Mark got run over by a bus!"

Mark - I risked my life to stop that Cyborg monster thing
Amber - But you didn't help me get people away from it
Me - I think we have a contender for biggest Douche in the universe.
Yeah, she is totally different from the comics
It’s made even worse by the scene where she says she’s known for weeks about him being a superhero, meaning she prioritizes her own entertainment over human lives
@@Aredel That's because her writing is inconsistent. she clearly didn't know but the writers kind of forced that revelation to create conflict which was unneeded. When she knows that he was actually saving lives as a superhero the whole time.
The second the best friend said Amber likes “Ta’nahesi Coates and 3rd wave feminism.” I remember thinking “Run Mark. Run like you’re dad is on a killing spree.”

Walton is a national treasure indeed… he’s got tremendous range and is criminally underrated 💥
he is a perfect character IMO. He's sort of like Nick Fury pre-Captain-Plank in that he's a distant asshole at first glance, yet after just a few minutes of him talking you realize he's playing a different game entirely. Plus, he's endlessly quotable. A good example of both is when he exorcised Damien Darkblood for getting too close to the truth, not because he WANTS to cover it up, but because Damien Darkblood could only see in black and white, and he needs to keep things grey to bide his time until that actually know what's going on, since revealing Omniman too early could doom them all. (it's also a nice bit of wordplay since Omniman's last name is Grayson, so he literally has to keep things gray, as in, he has to keep things how Omniman wants them to be) There are also lines like when Debbie is mad at him and says that that's why she hates him and he just callously responds "it's why I hate me too" not in a depressive or relatable way, but in that he genuinely doesn't like having to deal in the shades of moral grey he lives in, it's just that he has to in order to actually do his job.
Boyd is such an unforgettable character
Shane Vendrell to me. And that came after Venus. And that was hard to forget.
Cecil was brilliant
Even though Amber was very polarizing to people, I still believe she is a pretty accurate way of showing just how unreasonable some people can be in relationships.
The moment she blackmailed the bully just to give Mark her number, he should have seen a few red flags
The comic version is less annoying
"Everything woke turns to shite"
She is a well writen awful girlfriend. Can't wait for Mark to have enough of her bullshit and drop a big "f*ck you" and go with Eve.
See, if she's an accurate depiction of the members of the woke blob... Then I wouldn't mind her much.
In fact, if that's the case, I hope she turns lesbian, so Mark doesn't end with her at all.
Hollywood is on a mission to character assassinate every male character. This show was enjoyable, which is rare today.
Let's hope it stays that way
His best friend was super cringe tho.
@Lujack Shaw , Mark is going to be an even bigger than Sanji from One Piece in the second season of Invincible, and I’m not going to watch the second season of Invincible unless I watch it through piracy.
They're doing that in this show too. You just don't see it. Omni-man is the ultimate bad dad and not only that. He's also deceptive. It sends a message that you can't trust any man, not even the apparent good ones. They're fascists in disguise, waiting to strike. The only way for men to be good according to this show is to be grounded by a gender studies gf and a gay best friend.
And ffs, how would Viltrum even work as a society? How they haven't all killed each other? No matter how strong you are, there's always someone stronger than you in one context or another. Everyone's weak at different things. This show is dumb and it doesn't make any sense.

Agreed! Everytime Amber was on-screen it was a detriment for me and my gf. Largely because she was an annoying, egotistical Leftist. And in the comics she was a blond haired blue eyed woman. Blackwashing?
Maybe, just maybe they do something with her in the next seasons
I hope they make her white in the next season
@@elmaionesosexo Based on the comics? No, they won't
For most of the runtime of this show, I was absolutely convinced that Amber was going to be a twist villain because of how they set her up. Turns out, no, she's just an insufferable human being with no redeeming qualities.
Indeed, Amber is the real monster of the piece. Whether it's intentional or not, she's a cautionary tale, and literally a lower form of life compared to Mark.
If i were to look deeper than the surface, my guess is that shes supposed to be that highschool love intrest that really isnt right for you no matter how you feel about her. That guy or girl that makes you look past all the toxic traits due to not love but infatuation. The girl horrible person that you dont want to be "The one who got away". That person you put so much effort into trying to impress so you dont loose them, that you dont dont even see that you are putting more effort into them than they put into you.
Amber could become a villain next season! You never know! A not-so-super villain who was just a bad girlfriend is perfect for Invincible because...it is the type of villain that he would least expect to face, when he is used to battling supervillains and his dad.
She can be redeemed if the creators see the backlash to how they portrayed the character on screen

@Shi Yu Meng a few casual mentions of "woke garbage" is okay in my books as long as it doesn't whittle it's way into the story. Which in the case of invincible, it really doesn't.

@Shi Yu Meng you sound like a right wing snowflake, very cringe
Amber is really fucking awful. And she didn't need to be, she was a perfectly supportive and rather cute blonde college chick in the original comic. I hope they don't make any more changes, holy shit.
On the contrary. I think they could actually fix the character they have now by making her bitching, controlling and manipulative nature intentional. Invincible was always good at breaking common stereotypes and misconceptions of gender roles in the comics. Here lies a prime opportunity for him to learn his own self worth and dump Amber so he can move on to a healthy relationship.
Wasn't she a dumbass in the comics who started dating an abusive guy who slapped her around while she made excuses for him?
@@Aredel He won't do that.
@@Gaia_Gaistar It only happened once that we saw and the guy actually did turn around and never do it again after getting spanked for it.
But they split before that. They mutually grew apart very believably while she was at college getting egged on to cheat by her girlfriends and Mark being swamped with world-saving hero work. As far as we know she didn't actually cheat but her behavior was very questionable and Mark had been growing closer to, uh, well, somebody else, too. So they both had fault, I suppose.
@@Aredel I hope so. And hopefully they show them growing apart while pursuing different paths (an all-too-lifelike scenario) ands that's all the more it really needs to justify a split.

It could do with less blood. As someone said, when it's always a "bloody fight" then they all are just "fights".
Fatal flaw.
To be blunt and honest.....she's exactly what the show needed...a blunt reality of how some people really think/act/behave in the REAL world. It actually wouldn't be "perfect" if she wasn't there. It would just be a perfect fantasy of what we want. And in reality....what we "want" is never guaranteed.

The whole social justice arc for Amber is a bit of writing genius. She thinks she's so important and acts VERY self-centered in the face of what she secretly knows. She's so absorbed in herself that she fails to realize (or refuses to realize) how big the universe really is and that brutality is the way and her views on how things should work are utterly insignificant. They wrote a typical, neive college teen perfectly.

I love how the series portraits gore. Most stories just uses it just to shock the viewer, but here the characters themselves are shocked and terrified by brutality around them. They are not super warriors that don't blink when someone gets ripped apart like in Mortal Kombat - despite their powers, they're still vulnerable humans.
Yeah, from the first death the show sets the tone really well. I think only once a character’s death is played for laughs, when Immortal throws that guy into space and in the later episode we see his body just floating there.
I find a similar technique in the 5th season of Samurai Jack.
Blood was hardly ever shown throughout the whole series yet when it does appear, its genuinely shocking.
More shocking when the occurrence is few and far between instead of being so excessive, audiences get numb to it.
Funny how in an animated show like Invincible gore disturbs me way more than in something like the Boys. Especially the War Womans death ... like fuckkkkk

It's funny how feminist's ideas of a "powerful" woman are all traits that they hate in men. I really liked the show, however the amber character really dragged it down and I skipped a few episodes on a 2nd re-watch because I just didn't have the patience for it.
You can almost literally see the thought process of the liberal writer on the show and even visualise the checklist board on the wall he's working from, because the amber character is all paint-by-numbers and basically a stereotype in itself -- you knew everything you needed to know about Amber as soon as you heard '4th wave feminism' , personality and motives for all future episodes included.
Not one deviation from the cookie-cutter, even by accident.
Theres been maybe 40 failed shows with this character, every single one being completely interchangable with every other.... Amber is 41
Ironically enough the 'strong and independent and smarter than everyone else' routine ultimately backfires because, as stated by plenty others, it means she both simultaneously knew Mark was off saving lives as a superhero but also went out of her way to make him feel bad for doing it by pretending not to know why he showed up late (for example)
If she had just remained unaware (like her white character in the comics) then it would be perfectly forgivable but ofcourse by virtue of being black, she can't be portrayed as dumb or unaware and instead had to be smarter than everyone else and figure it out early -- hence the major personality issue.
I do hope they remove that character or at least give her a backseat, but I suspect instead they'll just go against all the criticism and make her a superhero of sorts and tank the ratings....the netflix way of doing things..
Other than that I liked the show alot. I just hate it when 1 thing drags a show down , and that one thing is present in all episodes all the time so you can't completely ignore it as much as you'd like.
She needs a seat at the back of the bus.
I really am surprised you kind of glossed over the biggest stain of the show: Amber. But then again, the show as a whole more than makes up for it. In a very rare case for adaptations, I find it quite a bit better than the source material in terms of the pacing and tension while ultimately getting the same points across.
Amber may be slightly annoying but at least she’s very easy to ignore, being totally irrelevant to any of the main plots. And she’s much less involved in most episodes than even the gay best friend and certainly than Atom Eve. So if they had to fill an SJW quota at least it was completely forgettable, they didn’t like give her super powers or being some kind of trainer for Mark or something.
Amber has become common knowledge by now even for those who never watched the show. The problem is: how many of these woke redesigns follow any other pattern than toxic abuser? What can you say beyond that she’s let another manipulative sociopath and that Hollywood does a disservice by perpetuating the stereotype?
@@jong.7944 I would call her borderline infuriating because the writers try to paint her as being in the right all the time, even though it's obvious she's toxic and selfish.
I'm just glad pretty much everyone who loves the show hates her character.
Of course they race and identity swapped Amber.
Must have "muh representashun!"
AND they made her the worst character in the show.
I really, really hope they did all that deliberately as another very subtle subversion.
Like the ridiculous SJW professor villain they fight at the monument
I got that feeling myself. Like they were showing us how that type of character is completely unrelatable, unattractive, and outright annoying. The embodiment of giving the SJW goons enough rope to hang themselves with.
I don't think the "we must make characters black" group are that self aware
@@tumbles8350 What if someone was ordered by the executive producer hacks to add them, so they subverted the process by making them awful?
I have a hard time imagining how that wasn't done on purpose considering how self-aware the show was about how cringe the nutty professor Shocker parody character is. Mark wasn't the best boyfriend, that's a fact, but I don't really think we're supposed to agree with her, because it seems pretty obvious that she was written to be unreasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing this so nobody will miss their relationship when things change for the better (I won't spoil it for those who don't know the comics and don't want confirmed spoilers, but you can probably guess how his relationship status could improve from Amber).
Invincible is one of those shows that remain good even after the adaptation decides to add a little bit too much of woke sauce
Proof that these woke movies are just fuckin trash written by trash.
it's cuz most of the woke stuff they add are mostly mocking woke culture or barely show up again. But the way they changed amber is just sad. It's not a coincidence that she's written woke and easily the worst character on the show lol
what woke stuff did they put in the adaptation
@@Greg12839 been a while since I watched it but they color washed amber(?) added some weird dialogue on sexuality that isn't there in the comics and ofc the infamous line on gender norms and sexualization or whatever that the villain with the sesmic gloves says when he sees eve's skimpy costume, there's some more subtle stuff that you can catch if you look for it hard enough
but as I said it didn't ruin the show or anything, it's just that it feels like pandering
I just finished the last episode yesterday and I actually legit cried. I think that's the first time I cried during a superhero movie, because they actually did a good job of fleshing out Mark's character and how completely devastated he was to find out who his father really was. I also was wore out by the superhero genre but I really hope this continues to be as good in the next two seasons.
Invincible is tight, lean, and brutally efficient. Every episode leaves you wanting more, but in a good way; You want more of these characters, and their world. It's really good.
It's also a *night and day* improvement over the original comic, which has more wasted potential than The Boys did, if you'll believe that. I'm not saying the original comic is *bad,* mind you, just weirdly written.
This show though? Go watch it. It's special.
Nope, you're completely wrong. The Invincible comic is MUCH better than The Boys comic. The Boys comic was just an edgelord fest, and the show improves upon it. The Invincible comic isn't perfect, but it's renowned as an amazing series which the show enhances. I've read the entire series, it's pretty darn good.
Show is full of woke shite and power levels are horribly inconsistent.
Still, supers-fighting is what saves this from trashcan, if only barely.
Yep invincible was an unexpected gem that I was happy to experience.
really ? that shit sucked major ass
I knew Amber would be a disaster as soon as the words "Tan-nehisi coats" were mentioned as something she's interested in.
I get that they wanted Amber to be annoyed with Mark for keeping everything a secret and wanting her to go along with it, but it makes 0 sense when she breaks up with him over leaving at the college fight when she knows that he's Invincible?! Wtf did you want him to do? 😂
One of the reasons Invincible's writing is so good is because they actually stayed true to the source material, for the most part. Something a lot of superhero adaptations fail to do.
@Gwyn and Gold I figure that’s because Astrology is real in the Abramsverse. It’s all about changing the position of the planets (or destroying Vulcan in this case) and how that can affect one’s love life.
no they didn't. the source was shit lol
They changed a lot of stuff when adapting The Boys and that show was great
Well sometimes it's kinda hard to do when the source material has like a hundred iteration and deviations and those deviations have different timelines while invincible is pretty solid ,butttt they do fuck up and put in their shitty gender and race politics in other shows do yeah your right.😐😑
Based on what I know about the comics, it's actually the ways the show deviates from the comics that make it so good. Except Amber, she would be better off not existing
"I dunno what they'll do or where they'll take it?"
I've read the comics and it's all high quality and expansive. They could easily get 8 seasons of really amazing content.
Honestly, the books really have neat little world building nods all over. Feels like a whole world that we're just seeing from a certain point of view.
I fucking love this show, except for the part where amber gets recommended a Tallahassee cotes book about critical race theory
Literally almost stopped watching the show after that one line. I hate that piece of shit masquerading as a human.
@@brandondrake4609 same, im black and didn't like the overdone woke references in episode 3. Thank goodness it never/barely shows up again and doesn't impact the story
Wait, there was a part that had that? I..... don't remember that being in there, well except that Amber is so goddamn insufferable.
It's Tanaheesee Coates, and every time she started spouting bullshit I just skipped forward. I've heard enough of this in uni and out in the street, I have no sympathy for cartoon characters that say that.
@@maxh276 That's good to know, maybe I'll give it another shot. I stopped watching at ep3. That combined with the anti-white male take really put me off. (I'm a minority, not that it matters. Just sick of the identity crap everywhere.)
The Drinker _recommending_ a superhero show?
*A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.*
And one made by Amazon no less!
@john smith
It’s already infested with woke shit, wdym?
@@someguy9970 not really, apart from one character, and even her is not central to the plot.

Guys dont forget the show The Boys. Probably the best superhero show that I have seen and I recommend it.
