Thanks! I had to replace my joysticks (left AND right) and when I put it back together the cable for my fan snapped due to it's odd placement and my carelessness. Now I got my fan fixed, and possibly a new hobby repairing electronics cuz I found it super fun
FANtastic video. Replaced my fan and SD card reader. Seems my kickstand broke inside and clogged up fan and shorted sd card reader. Tools in that pack suck, but fan was a Foxconn. Very nice! Put some Arctic Silver 5 on the heatsink too. Running like a champ!
Followed this step-by-step and my switch won't turn on now. Wondering if there's something specifically I should look for to fix or if there's a wire I might need to check
Thanks for this video, it was very helpful. I would have liked to see you put the screws back in though as I panicked and wanted to know I was doing everything exactly right haha First time I've ever taken apart something since my pen in secondary school. Thanks for the help! My fan is fixed :)
My main concern would be accidentally would be cutting through a trace if putting to much pressure cutting the foam strip instead just ripping it. Also depending the if the fan is not truly dead it could be possible to do deep clean on the fan unit. Besides all said and done very good video.
Absolutely... if you aren't comfortable cutting the tape... it will pull up. As far as cleaning the fan... when a customer is paying for it... it's just cheaper to replace it. But for the end use, it is a valid option. Thanks for watching.
I’m glad I came across this vid my switch just recently started overheating, I’ve been playing the new yugioh master duel and I get it’s a pretty heavy game, It has to run so many things at once but I don’t think it should be overwhelming the fan to the point where it shuts down the whole thing. I’ll double check on the condition of the fan and If it’s the fan like I think it is I’ll be back on the here to do the step by step cuz I won’t remember how to do it😅
Thanks for watching. It was strange, all of the sudden, in the last few weeks... I've been hit with Switch temp problems, where in the past... they were all fine. A few had bad fans... but I think several were just from hard thermal paste.
My nintendo switch its overheating and then turns off, I changed the thermal past so many times but i didnt change the fan (sometimes i feel the hot air but sometimes no) its the fan?
Hi there - after doing this repair, about 8 months later the little plastic grated area around the fan broke and it’s completely an open area. Is there anyway to fix that? Can I buy the plastic casing and replace it?
Do you know the size of the rubber o rings? My original fan just had solid plastic rings on the fan housing, when I installed the new fan it wiggles around and is not completely secure.
Problem for me was the replacement fan had solid plastic rings all the way around for the screws (no openings in the rings to insert the rubber mounts). Pretty much impossible to squeeze the rubber mounts in there and even when I managed after cutting one down a bit, there was no room left for the screw to fit through. So I mounted the new fan without them and we'll see how it goes.
Mine is overheating too but I don’t how to replace the fan but it has a gadget to sit on top of your switch it’s called a cooling fan, I’m going to buy a cooling fan for the switch
Can you please fix my Nintendo my thing is completely broken like the whole screen is black I can’t see anything in it has little lines that are colored red green yellow blue purple pink and orange can you please fix it or teach me how to fix it
It will only come on when it's warm. You can test it with the heat pipe off. If it still overheats, and shuts down on it's own... then the driver for the fan can be shorted.
I replaced the fan in my son's switch a few days ago but it's still not turning on. I've read online that the fan kicks on when it's getting too hot, but others have said theirs runs all the time. Did I get a defective fan or is there something else going on ?
hello! I watched ur video and i wanted to try fixing it and the link to the fan on amazon before i bought it there was reviews saying that it's very very noisy? Is i true? If so how do i prevent it?
@@PghGameFix hi sorry i have another question, im worried that if i fix it myself i'll break it afterwards like after i replace the fan it wont turn on like fully turn on hpw can i prevent that thats my main concern sorry!
@@orikoz Unfortunately, I can't help with that. If you are the kind of person who knows they can't work on small, fragile parts.. you may want to have someone else install a fan. It will be cheaper in the longrun.
How long will the fan last before it fails? I read online that people says 2-3 years before failure and people on Nintendo life saying that their 5 year old Nintendo switch is still working with the original fan still working good with no loud noise or overheating. Do you know how long the original fan will last? FYI: I have the 2019 newer model
There is honestly no way to know. I think it has to do with how much you play... and how dusty the environment is that you are using it in. I have a "Day one" switch and there is no overheating issues, and my fan is still running.
@@PghGameFix how many years should I replace the thermal paste? I have brought a 2019 revised switch with the better battery life last year and hasn't been opened yet and still running fine. @@taylorbaldwin1776 It honestly depends on how hot it has gotten. Just make sure the system has a charge in it. Replacing the fan shouldn't have gotten you deep enough to disconnect anything major.

I carefully sliced it with the plastic pry tool as I pulled up on the heat pipe. Easy peasy

Why don’t you get a cooling fan it sits on top of your switch where the air vent is & it will help keep your switch from overheating
Noticed that you didn't remove the heat shroud on top of the CPU, might want to do that next time and replace the thermal paste on the die.
Hi there - after doing this repair, about 8 months later the little plastic grated area around the fan broke and it’s completely an open area. Is there anyway to fix that? Can I buy the plastic casing and replace it?
you can buy a mid chassis and replace it.

Any advice for stripped screws?
use the right tools. If the screw head is too far gone, all you can do is drill the head off
@@PghGameFix Could you further elaborate on drilling the head off please? Thanks!
You can try putting a rubber band between the screw and the screwdriver, sometimes it will enable a grip.
What if the screws get damaged when trying to unscrew, what would you recommend doing then?
Depends how bad they got messed up. If there is nothing left, then you have to drill the heads off.

@@luisumana1238 Somthing very small, and left twist if you can find it. It may grab, and roll the screw out.
