- NOTE: YOU SHOULD PROBABLY UNPLUG THE BATTERY BEFORE YOU START TO TAKE THE BOARD APART!
- I didn't have a problem but some comments recommended this so I would also recommend it!
Had to replace the fan for my son's Nintendo Switch.
Bought this fan from Amazon:
www.amazon.com/ElecGear-Repla...
Took about 20 minutes

thanks man, great video, just one thing at 13:12 you said the fan move a little bit, thats because the original fan had in the three holes for the screws some rubber rings, you just take them from the original fan and place then on the new one, and with those the fan fits perfectly and doesnt move.
I read your comment before I started my fan replacement, thought “phew, glad I read that!” and STILL managed to forget! 😅
Fortunately I remembered before putting everything back together. Thank you!
thank you for this, i was struggling so bad to put the screws back in and then I saw this comment
Good catch. I missed it despite reading this a week before 😂
Thank you :) after a few heart attacks and forgetting to connect the "SD holder" correctly, fixing that, destroying 2 screws and losing one, my switch finally runs smooth and silent again ^^
Ikr? the SD holder is so complicated to connect
Couple notes from my experience:
1) The fan shouldn't wiggle around after you install it. There are some little shock mount rubber grommets that go around the screw holes that you need to take off the old fan and put on the new one.
2) My fan doesn't spin a little when I turn on the device. I thought it probably wouldn't work when I got it all back together but it did.
3) I wasn't able to get the SD card connected to the motherboard again without removing the little pad that's on top of it. After I removed it I could easily connect it again, then I just replaced the pad afterwards again.
4) for some reason the 2 bottom screws by the USB connector wont go back in. No idea why??
Not sure why they would not fit unless something is misaligned.
This is one of my first times doing something so hands-on like this, and you made it INCREDIBLY easy. This vid helped me work wonders, thanks again! :)
Thanks for posting this video I had a little trouble getting that copper radiator piece back in but otherwise it was a flawless success. I did the battery about three weeks ago and it works great my 11-year-old son is very happy. The only thing I can say is get one of those magnetic grid boards to put the screws on so you don’t lose them I am not an organized person by any means but I made sure to number each screw and where it went and then work my way backwards so I didn’t forget any screws
Thanks for the easy to follow guide. My kids are testing the switch happily after changing the fan out.
Thank you so much! This was super stressful for me, but you guided it all so well, and now my Switch is working perfectly!
Thanks so much for the video. Fixed mine in no time thanks to you! Getting the SD card reader plugged back in was the only thing that gave me trouble.
Ikr? The SD thing is so weird
Thank you for posting! Very helpful and well explained! I think someone else might have mentioned but there's 3 little rubber bushings for the fan that help hold it in place. I doubt that'd make any difference for cooling but it might be a little noisy:) thanks again friend!
I just replaced mine using this exact kit and the fan came with new bushings in place, fyi.
Crisp, clear, concise. Wonderful vid and informational.
Thank you so much. It was of great help.
Two things I would have personally done differently: unplug the battery and replace the thermal paste, it seemed a little more on the drier-end.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the video! I'll be ordering in the fan as soon as possible and referencing your guide.
Perfect! Exactly what I needed. Thanks dude✨
For anyone new watching this video I just wanted to say I followed it to a T and it was a huge help. Unfortunately in the beginning I didn’t have the right screwdrivers and ended up stripping a few so I had to buy a whole drill kit in Amazon for that and bought the proper screwdrivers. I’m happy that after all the effort it finally paid off lol. My fan was screaming every time I tried to play a game and replacing the fan worked like a charm. I’d say my switch is around 5 or 6 years old.
Great changed my sons. Pretty straight forward great video
Thanks from Germany for that Instruction. My husband just replaced the Fan on our Sons Switch with your Video. 🤩
Cant belive how easy you made it for me to do it "myself". Now when i tell ppl that i fixed it they get impressed. 😁
Thank you!
Thank you for this video, it was a huge help in my successful fan replacement :)
Straightforward and successful. Only issue I had was a stripped screw, which I improved through.
For clarification, I didn't just wing it with the stripped screw. I thought into it and used a thin drill bit and low power.
Good video. Easy to follow. Thanks for the help.
Thank you for this great video! Replaced my switch fan successfully first time!
Incredibly helpful, thank you so much.
Finally my Switch stopped overheating.
Thank you, the step by step guide helped tons on replacing the fan
Thank you for a great guide! Soo nice not having to listen to my old grinding fan 😅
Great video. Thanks for the assist dude.switch runs great now!
Followed along. Worked out well. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this excellent video. I replaced my badly screaming fan and now my Switch is running silently again. I also didn't replace thermal paste, just added a bit more and that was it.
Great video everything went as planned and it’s all thanks to you so thank you
Awesome video! I accidentally put the black backing back on before I tested the fan. Removed it, turned it on, saw the subtle rotation, then put the backing back on. Noticed I forgot one silver screw, but if my Switch no longer shuts down because of overheating, cheers to you! Thanks.
Great video. Thanks for the help. I'm sure you have saved many people money keeping their switch running.
Thanks this helped a lot my friend gave me his because it had a loud fan and a broken joycon
Thank you for this video. I successfully changed my cooling fan and i even switched out the battery successfully while i had it open. I want to make one remark to the cooling fan having that wiggle room? The origin cooling fan has rubber gaskets you should take off and apply to the replacement fan. Just something i noticed during my own switch surgery. Thank you for posting this video and giving me the confidence!
Worked for me. Very happy with this video. :)
Thanks for the video. Really appreciate the effort. 🎉
Do you need to order a heat sink as well as a fan? Or will just ordering a new fan work?
Great video just replaced my fan & flawless.! I wiped away the old thermal paste & applied new paste so hopefully this fan will last me another 3 years plus
What thermal paste did you use? I'm unfamiliar with it, so I wanted to make sure I use something that works.
So many thanks, your video help me a lot!
Ty! Was able to swap tge fan of my friends switch with your video!
My fan runs after I turn the switch off. Only turns off if I turn the unit back on or unplug the battery. Any suggestions. This is the original fan. Just wondering what could cause this
Just replaced my own fan; my Switch is old, and I am honestly impressed with how long it lasted before I had consistent heating issues.
Thank you very much thank's to you and another video I finally replaced my fan. Perfect
What to do with the silicon pads, which are also in the set? Can I use both pads for both sides of the fan?
Thanks for the video! It was my third video for this case that i watched. i was about to mention the thing with the rubber rings, but that was already mentioned.
One thing though, and i suppose it depends on the firmware you currently have on your switch. When i installed the new fan, it did NOT turn for a short moment like it did in your video. I immediately thought my fan was bad and reordered another.. then i replaced it with the original fan (which did work, but made scratching noises) and it also did NOT turn on.
I installed the new fan again and put everything back into place. Started up a game which is quite demanding and waited for air to be pushed out of the switch. It did (to my great relief!).
So if anyone wonders why their fan did not turn on, upon turning on the console, it may be just a different firmware where there is no "fan test" at the beginning.
Thanks a lot!! That was my initial thought as well, so I fired up TOTK for a few seconds and then boom! The fan started to spin very nice and silently ^^
Appreciate the help!
Question, I worked on Nintendo Switch Lite today I was doing a shell swap on it, and right before I put it all back together I turned it on to see if the fan will start spinning the moment I tuned it on, but it didn’t so my question is do you know if it should start spinning instantly when it turns on or does it start to spin once the console starts getting warm?
This helped me so much with my dead fan, thank you
Wonderful tutorial, is the link in the description for the fan still working? It says PS4 when on the Amazon site.
Nice content buddy 👀
Just a question is the fan you purchased from Amazon? Just want to know before I get one myself
My launch switch fan is failing this helped out a lot
You can test the fan basically once you put the game cartridge/headphone jack piece in, and probably a good idea to do at that time. Other than that, great video, it was super helpful :)
I did buy a new fan. But the Problem is it is too loud. Can you please help me?
LG Yasin
Thanks! I highly recommend using new thermal paste... But other than that, good video!
hello i'm think of buying the fan you are using is it still working for your switch 2yrs later?
Thanks man helped me fix my switch
Thanks for the help! I successfully did it!
Remember if touch screen or game card don't work properly after the game slot Lego brick thing needs fixing again.
Sehr schön erklärt, vielen dank👍
Is your amazon link the same as what we’re seeing in this video? It says ps4
I saw that too
Recently my switch started over heating after playing for jus 30 min docked and would shut down on its own. It’s done it three times, and I haven’t used it since as I don’t want to damage it further. I don’t hear any fan sounds coming from it, so is fair to assume the fan is prolly broken?
For sure. That is the Switch telling you “repair me”
Replace the thermal paste
Gsgsys Gagahhs Whats thats
Quick question is the original thermal paste still working well? (I guess, the switch isn't overheating?) I would probably take the opportunity to replace 6 year old thermal paste... but not sure yet.
I think if you have the thermal paste, just replace it to make sure.
Amazing thanks!
Thanks man, I replaced my fan because the fan made a grinding noise I used a daily vitamin sorter for the tri wing and Philip's screws
Same happening to my Switch now 😫
I think the fan is the reason why I’m experiencing constant battery drain and heating problems, and it makes noise.
Great tutorial. What kind of philips head screwdriver did you use?
I tri wing and one phillips.
great video!
great video i need to replace mine dosent look to hard
my switch fan makes this high pitch sound, almost like whistling
That's normal
My fans don’t work
Thanks!
Are all the screws on the outside the same size 🤔🤔
Where can we get the new fan
I had to open my blender to get the damn thing to turn on but it wouldn’t because the people in the factory forgot to attach the dagon power cord to the motherboard. 😂
You didn't replaced the thermal paste?
Thank you boss
I'm having issues with the cartridge slot and the touchscreen not working. Everything else seems fine though, do you have any solution for this?
Not sure if you ever got it or not but I just tried to replace my switch fan and the touchscreen wouldn't work. All I did was reseat (unplug and plug back in) the cable and it fixed it.
YOU NEED THE TINY 3 BLADED SCREWDRIVER AND A TINY PHILLIPS HEAD. I HAD THE 3-BLADE , BUT MY PHILLIPS HEAD DIDN'T WORK THAT GREAT BECASE IT WAS TOO BIG. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO WORKED PERFECTLY!
Perfect video, never done anything like this before and it worked with the first try :D Just a little tip for everyone trying : remove the micro sd card after testing it and before screwing the case on again :D mine is trash now
Thank you !
I followed the steps and still won’t spin. I have no idea what to do. I can’t get this thing to stop overheating in less than 30 mins.
is you switch battery in good condition?
Are all the inside screws the same?
Thanks! :)
Thanjs buddy
I have a question I changed my Fan and it still over heats what can cause it to still overheat ? I need help
Unsure if you ever managed to figure this out, but I'd suggest opening your switch again, cleaning away any old thermal paste and replacing it with new. Unsure which brand of thermal paste would work but if it's all dried up it can contribute to the problem you're describing.
you saved my life man
The link in the description is NOT what is shown in the video. the connector on the fan in the Amazon link does not match that of the Switches and its not even the same color.
hum, maybe i did something wrong.. my fan is always working even on sleep mode. I will dismount it all over again to see if i can see the mistake.. maybe a faulty fan ? update: The fan connector, i cant plug it well, i think its broken. I solved it adding a little bostik between the connector and the bronze piece, its making some pressure.
Thanks
Ok so I followed all the steps. Installed the new fan and it doesn’t turn on! What’s my next step? What could be wrong and not letting the fan come on to cool the Switch down? Any help would be much appreciated.
I would make sure that all the cable are place correctly with a good connection. I did have one fan in the past that was dead on arrival, so my only other suggestion would be to try to buy another fan to rule out that there is an issue with the fan.
good luck
My fan isn’t spinning when I turn it on. Does that mean I did something wrong?
It won't completely start spinning but you should see it slightly move when turning it on. I had one be bad when installed and had to get it replaced.
my nintendo isent tuning on after fan replacement
When I was trying to replace the fan on my switch the lock plastic peice fell off and I can put it back on but can get it to lock in place. Do you have any ideas on how I can fix it?
I don't know, maybe you are missing a screw?
@@FernandoC yeah I couldn't figure out the problem with that little gray lock piece mechanism but I found an alternative method of getting the fan to work so I'm all good. Thanks for replying back to me I really appreciate it!
@@jonathanesposito Same exact thing happened to me. How did you get it to work?
@@mystavis2344 I did a weird thing where I glued a little piece of plastic onto the copper heat distributor piece so that when I put that copper heat belt thing on top of the square module where the fan plugs into the system the plastic piece I glued to the copper belt presses down on the ribbon that plugs into the system causing the fan to work.
Kind of a weird thing and not sure if you follow what I'm talking about but that's what I did
Leaving the old thermal paste is okay?
Normally you should replace it.
Worked!
My SD-Card reader wont work now.
Cant plug it in again or its too loose.
Thats fucked up...😭
It does take a little while to snap it back in correctly.
@@FernandoC Oh yeah...
I got it, but it took so fckn long.
@@BetaSux that sd card is a pain in the ass. Aside from the fan that was the kost annoying thing
My fan didn’t turn on right away. What you do is launch a game and it’ll most likely run. Mine did. Hope that helps.
Thank you.
Thank you
One added warning - REMOVE YOUR SD CARD before doing this, I accidentally cracked a 256GB micro SD card and had a heart attack thinking I might have lost a few hundred hours of TOTK haha (just had to redownload the game to a new card and was all good).
touch screen and cartridge reader no long work... but the fan does... all thanks to following your video ha. so others have had that happen as well?
I have heard people having the touch screen issue, just make sure all your connections are solid.
I’ve read somewhere else, you should try this: “ This is a common issue. Try disconnecting the battery, wait ~5 seconds, and reconnect it again to power cycle the Switch.”
Probably gonna do this job soon since my fan makes an absurdly loud buzzing sound and spins too fast. How is the switch doing at this point? I assume you didn't have to replace the thermal paste?
My kid has no problems with the fan. I don't think I added thermal paste because there was a lot but if it does dry out, I would clean and add fresh paste.
@@FernandoC thanks a lot👍. Gonna order a fan then and do this too. Cheers
