Loving their 12 year CS, Batch 21 at 56.1% ABV and 4 way finishing with 45% Sherry, 25% Bourbon, 25% Burgundy and 5% Port. Perfect for me. Cheers!
Okay so they do different cask maturations. Good to know.
Hi Peter
I love your reviews, but on this bottle of springbank 12year old cask strength, I bought 2 bottles awhile ago and drank 1 and have a bottle left, but much like you, it is not a "wow" whiskey at all, it was a hard whiskey to find and I was disappointed, I have all of springbank whiskeys up to there 21 year old, but finding them at any price is almost impossible these days, keep up the great reviews, I look forward to seeing your review of the talisker 10year old review, until next time, keep it in the center lane !!!
Thank you. I appreciate the comment and the feedback. I with this bottle offered more. It just fell short.
3 April. Batches do vary in cask mix and ABV, but all are good to excellent. Enjoyed your review!
Thank you. I appreciate it. Cheers!
3/4/23 is April. You are right with the European dates. Also they do change the cask maturation for every batch. Usually a difference in sherry to bourbon cask ratios. Cheers!
Thanks for the info. Cheers!
I have the 08.09.21/ and 03.04.23/ one of them I believe is the batch 23 all bourbon cask. The other one I have no idea. But they are phenomenal. I always get a bit of peat on Hazelburn too. Get the Hazelburn 15 Cask Strength. It's a Sherry nuke.
I keep looking for the Hazelburn 15 but it's eluding me so far. I'll get it eventually.
I have that September 2021 bottling. It's F-in' great 😋
My first and only 12 cask strength Springbank is the 2021 100% ex-bourbon batch.
Geezus was it ever a revelation!
It was actually my introduction Springbank and I havent come across another 12 since. But will continue to keep my eye out for them.
Cheers!
I bet that was amazing because it sounds amazing. Cheers!
Great review Peter!
Campbeltown peat (funk) always hits me as walking into a machine shop or like 3 in 1 oil.
I have a hard time describing it sometimes, but I can relate to the machine shop note. I'll look for that the next time I have it. Cheers!
I love the addition of the spreadsheet! Thank you!
It will make John proud.
hey, you are very lucky to get Springbank at a liqueur store where you live. here, in Israel, Springbank cannot be found anywhere. and when i found it by a mere chance at a fancy wine store, the price was a whopping 145 usd for the regular 10 y.o.!! the 15 y.o. cost 350 usd. thanks, but not for me. the shop owner told me he got the Springbanks from a collector.
I understand that I'm very fortunate to be able to purchase it and that it's available where I am. Cheers!
That's tough. In Slovenia you can get the 10 for 91EUR and nothing else from SB. In the neighbouring Austria the 15 is availible for 150 EUR. Nothing else to get it from from where I live. It would be cheaper to order it from Masters of Malt, including TAX. But I'm not sure it's worth it.
Peter right on! I wasn't wowed at all with this expression and I expected to be. Maybe it was just the batch? I do adore Talisker 10!! Awesome video!! Cheers - off to Maui - Spring Break with my husband and our 3 kiddos!! 2 are at the University of Toronto - so proud of them - 19 and 21 and our youngest 17, is still at home - which as an all in mom I love!! It's great to all be together!! Maui is beautiful down time, fun and relaxation and amazing family time!! I hope to find some awesome single malts!! Cheers!! 🙂
Have fun! I'm on my spring break as well. Middle School science teacher for 28 years. Looking forward to some relaxing down time. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney Enjoy Peter!! Have fun!! 🙂
I have had SB 12 C.S since 2010, my batch is ONE abv 54.6 % . . . U said it best "no wow factor" for me either; so, I dont understand the madness of chasing, hogging, and lottery line-ups. Great vid.
Going into the review I was hoping it would pack more of a punch than it ended up giving me. Chasing makes no sense to me either, but I also live in an area where I see it all the time. Springbank is good, but I personally don't understand the hype it receives.
Great video. Was at Springbank distillery 2 weeks ago. Tasted a 24yo HB, a 28yo LR and a 32yo SP straight from the casks in the warehouse. And afterwards I could also blend my own SP single malt in the lab. Unforgettable!
Springbank tour is something I'm looking forward to doing in 2 years. Cheers!
Thank you for the nice review. Springbank 12 is for me the best whisky I ever had. I agree that it is a little difficult whisky to work with but I found that if you leave it for 30 minutes in the glass to rest and add water into it then it opens up and become very accessible. sláinte 🥃
I've also heard that it gets better over a year as well. I'll revisit it again next year and see. Cheers!
The SB 12 Cask strength are released by batches usually and the blend is different per year. I also tried this Batch 24. It was very normal when you first open it but with time and some air in the bottle. This one can be a gem 6 months later after opening it.
Perfect! The waiting game is on. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Trevor's needs to open an online division (or an east coast branch)!
It's a great shop. I put the 3 locations they have in the valley on my rotation for whisk(e)y and beer, but they offer so much more. Cheers!
April…. Good review. Good score…. Agree that although solid… not wowed by it.
Cheers 🥃
Thanks. I just wish it offered more. I'll see what the next one offers...if I ever see it.
Good review Peter. As for date notation, there is an international standard (part of ISO). It is Year / Month / Day. Of course hardly anyone seems to use it!
Gotcha. Thanks for the info. Cheers!
Nice review! The 2016 12 CS was also 54.1% but 65/35 Sherry/Bourbon. I have had a few different batches over the years but are really hard to get where I am so there is a batch 16 bunkered. Have a few single cask Longrows and Hazelburns that I enjoy as well.
I have my eye on a few Hazelburs at Trevors Liquor in my area, but they are pricey. I'll need to find some room in my budget or maybe skip a month or two of buying and put that money towards it.
@@whiskeyisajourney The Hazelburn 15 Oloroso seems to be a good one if you can find it. The price was decent in Alberta but gone so fast it made no difference.
I don't get the "Campbeltown Funk' as much in moderately peated whiskies as I do with the heavily peated expressions. I've had friends describe it to me as "Mechanical oils", "Decaying fungal matter" and my favorite "Wet burlap sacks". I like your turned cheese reference as well. 🤣🥃
All that sounds funky. 🤪
I'm a fan of Springbanks' process and model. They do it mandraulically and using non modern methods. Which has the downside of more pronounced batch variation. But to me, that's a fun part of the journey. 😊
I think this is the weakest of the Springbank I have. Just missed the mark for me.
@whiskeyisajourney one thing I think whisky reviewers miss an opportunity, or miss the mark on, though they acknowledge the fact that every experience with a bottle is a microcosm of what the taster experienced prior to drinking that dram, is re-reviewing the same bottle multiple times to expose the subjectivity of every single pour. I know it does not lend itself well to maximizing subscriptions ... but in the long view, maybe something to consider for an established channel and viewership.
Plz try 2024 version… its a banger!
I'll keep an eye out for it.
Have you any idea about the
Bunnahabhain Mòine?
Unfortunately, I don't.
In the UK we do dates the proper way 03.04.23 is 3rd of April 2023. Crazy why you guys do it inside out, upside down and back to front 🤣🤣🤣. JK mate no doubt yous will have a valid reason. cheers
Crazy Americans. 😁Cheers!
Springbank has never wowed me. One of the most overrated distilleries in Scotland imo...
I felt that way when I first tasted it, but came around to liking it about a year ago. I do agree with you about it being overrated.
Agreed, but I do commend Springbank for how they present their whisky, and I think the hype they receive will hopefully influence other distilleries to present their own whiskys naturally. Springbank does change up the cask maturation. I have a Springbank 12 CS that's 100% ex bourbon. In my opinion, I have enjoyed the Benromach CS more than any Springbank I've had.
I never knew how to properly describe the 'funk' until I heard the @whiskeynovice describe it as 3-in-1 oil and that's pretty accurate. 😁
3-in-1 oil... interesting. I can see that. Cheers!
