Lucius was raised in Numidia that's outside of the Roman Empire's control but somehow the Roman Empire comes to conquer his home leading to Lucius becoming a reluctant hero to the people. His mother sent him away to protect him from the corrupt Roman Empire. The Vanity Fair article goes indepth about this film where he is father, husband mirroring to Maximus who had a wife and son.
@@Brook11223 Yeah it was actually based on him. The original Maximus Decimus Meridius was based on a North African native Berber slave warrior. Hollywood always stealing peoples identity he was not yt
That's actually accurate.. they would flood the Coliseum and have sea battles. Idk if they ever used sharks, but they did use Nile crocodiles. The Romans went bulls..t when it came to "the games." Movies in the past actually tone it down to how it was.
That's right, they were called Naumachia and we'll also see them in the Those About To Die series. It seems like only a few might have taken place in the Coliseum due to size constraints, but special arenas we dug out to allow far larger battles. It's absolutely wild to imagine that sort of thing today, but is perfect for the big screen.
Looks good. It might not match the first (that came out at the right time/right cast/right mood), but even if it gets close, I will be happy. Music-wise, he has gone with Harry Gregson-Williams, who has done a lot of films and also does a good job. Scott used him in The Martian, The Last Duel, and Kingdom of Heaven.
Weirdly enough, I find myself thinking about the Roman Empire most days. But that's because I'm currently creating marketing material for a travel company and a LOT of their European coach tours and river cruises visit locations with links to the Roman empire.
What do I think of Rome; look around. Washington DC, football coliseum’s, NASCAR Speedway’s; even the Army. An American GI look uncannily like a modern Centurion. The helmet with chinstrap and attachments for sights, the heavy ballistic vest over a jacket that drops towards the knee, baggy pocket pants with ballistic boots, the utility belt full of tools of the trade.
Excellent trailer!!! The sets, costumes and visuals look amazing. I'm hyped for this movie. I like Paul Mescal, but part of me feels bad for Spencer Treat Clark who played Lucius in the original Gladiator. Spencer is still a working actor today and it was bad he never was considered returning to the role. His other credits was playing Bruce Willis' son in Unbreakable and Glass, Mystic River, The Last House on the Left remake, Agents of SHIELD, and recently Manhunt on Apple TV+.
Not understanding why the Jay-Z song is making so many people mad. I'm not even an avid listener of his, but like its just meaningless trailer music to amp up, primarily, the spectacle and the action. It's not that serious, especially considering the first film used Kid Rock music in its Super Bowl ad... Be happy it's Jay-Z and not some self-serious, slowed down and moody cover version. That was the way worse trailer music trend...
@@TheMovieCouple I know. I was saying it more for it's pretty the main thing other people are complaining about than anything else from what I've seen. Idk why. It's not the first historical movie to use anachronstic music for the trailer, so why is it such an issue here when it does honestly work just fine...
@@jediconnor9349 Exactly. 9 times out of 10 it never is... "Bawitdaba" wasn't in the first, why expect Jay Z to be in the second... I swear people just find anything to complain about no matter how trivial...

@@aceshigh2784 I know, it's like these people are expecting this to be A Knight's Tale 2 and not Gladiator 2 (though, no shade to Knight's Tale. That movie and that soundtrack rule!) based off a simple, meaningless use of trailer music that 9 times out of 10, the trailer music doesn't actually appear in the movie. Like I said, Kid Rock was going "Bawitdaba da-bang da-bang diggy-diggy..." in first film's advertising, but obviously not in the movie itself... This is just been one of the dumbest discourses I've ever seen, which is honestly saying a lot...
I remember and really enjoyed the first film, a great trailer that showed alot but leaves room for so much we haven't seen, and all the time all the time ✝️
That god awful Jay-Z music doesn't fit the theme of Gladiator. Hans Zimmer's score from the first film would fit this trailer perfectly. The score needs to sync with the story. The score itself tells a story. The trailer is compelling and the scenes are great but that rap music just doesn't jive in anyway possible lol. It's like putting Dom's Dodge charger in the arena and he is battling for his family lol. Also they did reshoot of the last scene from The Gladiator with replacing Spencer Treat Clark with a new young actor to play Lucius. Also it's Brother-in-Laws working together with Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal as they are going to appear in F4 and Reed Richards is married to Johnny Storm's sister Sue Storm lol.
"Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock was in the first film's Super Bowl ad... It's not that deep. Both songs aren't there for the story, but to hype the action and spectacle. It worked for the first, clearly. It's just trailer music, not the end of the world...
@@filmfanaticx4212 Well when you promoting a film the themes need to make sense. Putting something's not part of that specific time period it does not sync. The trailer music needs to make sense and not just put some stupid random music. Look at Safehouse film with Denzel and Ryan and that same song was used in the trailer and it worked. It fit the tone of the story.
@@Brook11223 BRUH, It is working cause the trailer itself isn't heavily focused on the story!! It's there, but watch it again and notice how much more focus there is on the ACTION and the SPECTACLE of the film and not the plot. And for that, the song works! Again, did I mention they did the same thing with the first film and Kid Rock music? It's NOT that deep, and you're acting like this is the only historical film to use anachronistic music in the trailer, of which I can assure it is not...
@@filmfanaticx4212 sorry to say this but the song does not work. Whoever did this trailer but adding that song halfway through it should be fired. That rap song does not work for this period piece film. That rap song can work for Safehouse film as it's a modern story and when you see the song start to play there is a beat to it as you listen to it and it works perfectly. For Gladiator you need to have music that fits the time and easily you could've reused some of the scores from the first film and it would sync perfectly. I watched this trailer over and over and once that Jay-Z, Kanye West song starts to play there is no connection. The music has to make sense to the story and recycling the same rap music completely throws it off lol.
