Yeah, I think is also something which I'm conflicted over as well. Gladiator was a completely self-contained story so making a direct sequel to it that feels natural and connected is going to be a tall order. On the other hand, I'm such a Roman history buff that even just the aesthetics of being in ancient Rome is going to be something I'm gonna love to see.
I think it's a great idea because it's a continuation of the story, they have a chance to show the naval battles in the coliseum, and they waited 24 years. It would've been worse if the sequel came out like 2 years after the first

Please look at the chorus of Church in the Wild and then take a moment to think about how important the concept of winning over the mob because the mob is Rome was in the first Gladiator. The song choice is putting emphasis on that exact same theme again for this trailer.

Looks good. It might not match the first (that came out at the right time/right cast/right mood) but even if its gets close I will be happy. Music-wise, he has gone with Harry Gregson-Williams, who has done a lot of films and also does a good job. Scott used him in The Martian, The Last Duel, and Kingdom of Heaven.
One thing that's kind of dumb, is they didn't bring back the actor of Lucius, the boy from the first movie. This is an adult Lucius, but he's played by Paul Mescal in this movie.
About the music, I agree: generic action movie music simply does not fit whenever a period piece is involved as it completely takes you out of the atmosphere the movie is supposed to have. Ethereal music, tribal music and military marches are the only types of music that can work here. In fact, Lisa Gerrard, who sung the first Gladiator's famous "Now We Are Free", is well known for her contribution for the world of ethereal and tribal music, both in her solo career and whenever she resumes her involvement in the otherworldly band Dead Can Dance.

You need to rewatch the original. It's clearly stated Lucius is the son of Lucilla and Lucius Varus. Although I always have suspected Maximus was his real father.

no did you pay attention at all? he was probaly a citizen of that city we see pedro pascal attack in the trailer. we see paul mescal hugging his wife in the water. thats probaly why he want revenge on "the general" like you hear in the trailer. he wants revenge on the whole roman army then says "the general will do." Also lucius wouldve been brought up in Rome as a noble even the next emperor.. this probaly takes place 100-200 years after

The music choice for this trailer also reminded me of the new Peacock Ancient Rome series the trailer for that also featured rap/hip-hop music. Seems to be a trend for many trailers.

paul mescal has mainly been in indie movies and plays so far so that’s why he’s not on a lot of people’s radar as of now. not for much longer though. i personally think he’s incredible and i can’t wait for the general audience to see what he can do
Part of this look cool, but based on a summary it seems the battle scenes are from a Roman invasion of Numidia...which has already been part of the Roman Empire for almost two hundred years at this point. Might be too much historical rage for me :p
I really thought that Paul Mescal was the son of Commodus with his sister. Maybe not.
That's his mom in the trailer, maybe he changed his name and status to be a Gladiator like Maximus.
You need to rewatch the original. It's clearly stated Lucius is the son of Lucilla and Lucius Varus. Although I always have suspected Maximus was his real father.
This movie is 2h36m, it will be awesome.

i agree with Eric... using rap in historical pieces is so tired and it just never works at all.. there's been so many trailers the last ten years for historical films or shows that have done it and it's never good
