C'mon we've seen this happen before
If I played this game Asuka would have been my replacement for the years of Zappa training I had. Reacting to randomness as your game plan has always been an interesting gameplay mechanic and keeps me from being bored in the match.
Oh, somebody figured out Asuka? Because i remember on launch, a lot of people didnt think Asuka was that strong. I guess that's just how it works with DLC characters who arent figured out yet in general. People did this in MK11 with Fujin.
I think the main issue here is that Asuka shares early HC's "unbreakable win condition": locked down zoning that can be setup after one knockdown and good resource management. But with HC's nerf to make gun meter cost more depending on distance, I think doing the same thing to Asuka, limiting his projectile on different variables, won't work. It'll bottleneck the character to constantly play in a way that is disadvantageous to him, and I genuinely think characters that have different priorities than strike-throw shouldn't be punished for being harder but rewarding archetypes. Maybe his mana recharge spell can be nerfed, though, because that thing recharges way too fast, too cheaply. But I'm hoping those S3 burst moves are invincible to counter this exact situation. Also, congratulations on the baby, Jiyuna. You're living the life that us nerds usually only dream of.
This character might arguably be the most technical fighting game character out there. You have to play a match while doing mental gymnastics of what you should do with your deck, moves before you get to the next card. Gobou is already making him look Godlike and this isn't even his final form. I guess the silver lining is that not everyone can just pick him up and play him. I reckon it takes MONTHS of heavy daily grinding just to get to Gobou's level.
in Asuka's defense i played him for 20h, and only pulled off the bullet hell about 4 times no average joe will do this regularly, but in tournaments this shit will be crazy i wanna see if anyone is playing the other decks
I knew it day 1. He looks so cool but at the end of the day he just throw random cube at you, build mad meter, use his super to get good card and win the game. You just block, look at his cards and wait he gives an opening to kill him in one or two interaction since he uses his own health as a ressource.
After watching rycroft in vsfighting make top 8 with Asuka I can already tell he's gonna be top tier. He just needed time for the lab monsters to optimize him
I think one way to balance him without sending him straight to the trashcan is to nerf the spells that recover mana, reduce cost etc and increase the cost for using HP to regen mana. It's ok that he can do this for a bit, it's not OK that it can be sustained practically forever. Sprinkle in some damage nerfs here or there and I think he could be relatively intact
As someone who had play this type of characters before in tournaments, I agree with you, I also thought that asuka was gonna be kind of broken once enough people get enough experience with the character, but that experience is not grinding the character in a conventional way, but rather you gotta go to training, grind your combos and set ups, and then throw everything down the window because a different type of grinding happens in actual play with this type of characters, and that grinding is the human behaviour training, which is not just grinding to get better as a player, but grinding to see how people reach to all kind of scenarios and then apply those reactions to the opponent, and that takes 3 or 4 times the amount of time you normally have to put in any other type of character, asuka is an extreme example of this type of gameplay, personally, I actually like single player game, cause lets face it, im a zero player, 90% of my games on tatsunko vs capcom are me winning without my opponent doing anything, the other 5% is me making comeback with joe the condor and the last 5% is me actually losing. He's incredibly techical, both in execution and the mental stack/resource management game, and he's very open-ended/non-linear in his gameplay which alllows for a lot of variety and makes for a really cool character to watch (imo). I do think S3's system changes will help bring him down a peg, fullscreen Burst paired with faster Burst gain weakens Exodia combos, Wild Assault might help zone break, and I can even see the new pushblock mechanic being useful against his pressure. It is kind of surprising that they didn't weaken him at all in S3, though.
i think it's important to remember changes to the game system coming with season 3. with burst going full screen so nothing is completely burst safe anymore, the strive rush that is wild assault allowing you to close distances, i think there's a good chance he becomes more of a character you can play against. Chaos and Asuka are boss characters made playable without nerfing. Arc tried to make a leveled game in all aspects, but that only worked in day 1. It is becoming one of the most single-player fighting game ever. Even more than BB, since the damage is too high.
Ooooo... I can imagine the after tournament salt leffen would be oozing from every pore of his skin if the EVO Grand Finals was Gobou's Asuka vs his Happy Chaos.
I've been watching this a week ago or so then I realized first of all at the highest level it will be hard to stop but also it is so much based on RNG it is hard to tell, for instance there were some fights where Azuka was already dead by draining his own life himself to recover mana, and then touched once and died... others it got the mana regen buffs and it is almost unstoppable. He was so much trouble for a pro to play well that I think many didn't even try because the risk-reward is huge but also the execution and stress to play it was not worth it, however now that one or two are putting the effort and reaching that point it will come to light that something must be done sooner or later.
I'm glad you made this, because the release of Asuka felt very overshadowed by the release of Street Fighter 6, and the tier lists that I see other players putting out are like "mmm yeah, he's pretty good" lmfao. Competitive Strive in Season 3 is about to get wild.
Agreed about single player characters like Arakune being crap design however I'll be devil's advocate and say Asuka is the strive dev team sticking it to all the people saying the game doesn't have depth. Off the top of my head I can't think of any fighting game character more complicated or unique (gameplay wise) than Asuka.
Test case 3 was the real problems on top of gobou Resources card type are trump card in their decks , wether it be reduce mana cost or regen , or draw redraw (bookmark) . And then , the best of them happens to be in test case 3 (mana regen , auto bookmark) ! Along with long suppressing multi cube wave and teleport for side swap and throws ! Pick random game of his from July August : round start with test case 1 , he chain fire cubes , when you air block or blocked the yellow one (multi hit) he's already in test case 3 and regened manas and redraw cards if he chained with out bookmark for pressure . Then he spew out long 5 10s of cube for you to block and he's gaining meter all this time . Suddenly he hits 50 , draw exodia (regen auto b) and repeat till you die . This win conditioned mod is more crack than jack-o had you with 2 minon in corner and 50 meter , on full screen from round start
@@ANIMEILLUMINATI seeing a lot others also think it (exodia) should break into test case 2 , it has some many undig potential too ! Also i think staffs should be adjust quite a bit (optimized) to be usable universally , not just the fast and attract (maybe pulsing) one were used realistically
I do understand how it shouldn't turn into a single player game, but I also feel like you can't take away the reward from asuka at the same time because like you said it's very hard to do, it takes a lot of execution, muscle memory, and above all mastery to do what gobo's doing in these clips. So, my question is, jiyuna, throwing away the fact that true balance with asuka may never be possible, say you were the head of the dev team, in what ways would you go about balancing asuka to where you don't take away the reward for his very difficult work, but also making his offense less 1 sided?
@@ladygeneveve3805 im aware of how you can destroy the cubes, trust me, i play him, but in the clips from gobo there were hardly any opportunities for his opponents to do that, for more casual levels sure yeah just punch the cubes but can you look at the clips again and tell me honestly you're punching the cubes every time? Especially the ones that send multiple?
Bro, he is extremely hard to pick up. My brain hurts when playing him for first time. I'm legit having hard time to even fight in arcade mode. He is harder than zato. I think he is the character with highest potential in GGST.
recently randomly gained an interest in asuka and looked up clips for him, gobou's gameplay made me wonder why no one else was playing him but i guess people are noticing the char now i hope the char gets to destroy a big tourney before he gets nerfed to the ground itd be funny to see everyones reactions
I think we're entering the Gobou era boys.. Definitely a tricky thing to design counterplay against a multiple projectiles for a long time type of character. I guess they tried by making it possible to destroy projectiles with normals, so maaybe people will find character specific counters to specific spells. I love that he feels like a god in gameplay though and can just improvise and combo the cards at lightning speed for the brain, but he looks very singleplayery atm in Gobou's hands, when he gets one of the regain mana/refill cards spells, leading to the other one short after/ meter for super, which also leads to the other one, which leads to armageddon.
The thing is, he seems so hard that when someone plays him this good instead of getting worried or annoyed I just get excited lol I know it's not okay to punish players for playing easier characters but idk he looks cool in action
the thing is the difficulty of a character is hardly a factor in fg. At best it gatekeeps a character from average player. Unfortunately, in this case Daisuke vision is shit.
@@CJ-wh7ik Is it? There are people that just like playing hard characters so giving them hard characters seems logical. If you are actively deciding not to play him bc you don't like the amount of effort it requires then that's not gatekeeping that's just personal preference
@@ANIMEILLUMINATI Yeah I get that. Is just that barely anyone plays him and he looks insane so I can't help getting hype for him lol. Hopefully they balance him at some point
@@freyzerb.castro9124 there's nothing wrong with that. Yet, the current consensus is that every character should be easy or "easy to play hard to master" - a saying that doesn't make much sense because it's either easy or hard. Maybe if you have an easy character with double 360 motion for super then yeah, def hard to master but I'd argue that it's not a good design. Anyway, new games wont be having difficult character. Project L will be for scrubs I mean the execution won't be challenging. Hard to judge this approach right now. For me BlazBlue centralfiction is the difficult game I like to play it but am I bad at it. My whole point is that difficulty of execution should not be main balancing factor. All characters in fg should have similar execution difficulty level.
Feel like Asuka would have bean right at home even in Xrd despite the fact Xrd has more complex characters and the strive versions are somewhat simplified.
I KNEW Gobo couldn’t have been at EVO. I just saw his asuka play last week against Anji and others and i couldn’t believe what i was seeing. It was like SNK Boss Syndrome. I have seen him lose sets though to a few players so perhaps Askua won’t be the next Kokonoe. Still crazy that Gobo can use him like that but we shouldn’t be surprised. Look what he’s done with zato and Lewis
For sure, people don't understand that you can't really reward players too much for needing to do difficult things for a character because.... they literally will just do it we've seen it time and time again, pros have no problem getting competent and figuring out technical characters - they still need to be balanced
Yeah i've been watching Gobou play Asuka since release, the auto-card replacement spell and mana regen spell (both in test case 3) are utterly broken, because they both remove his downsides, which is having to spend time drawing cards and recovering mana. You'll see Gobou fish for those cards exclusively with the card draw super if he doesn't have them active. When both are active it's just an onslaught that never ends. Speaking of neverending, another broken thing about him is that his decks auto-refill which i think is a terrible idea. These 3 things snowball off of each other so hard that it does turn into a single player game. If only they removed the decks that refills themselves when empty (they should just stay empty), it would really mitigate the optimal strategy. But more generally, he's also quite boring to play. The optimal strategy is just to throw cubes all day. Never get close, don't use your normals, don't confirm anything, just cubes. He had so much potential but this is what we're left with. Sad. He's fixable and can be balanced, but needs quite the overhaul. Not happening at the start of season 3 though! He's untouched, got some very slight buffs even LOL
People have been shitting on me because I believe wholeheartedly that Asuka at a high level will be problematic, just not at this very moment. Everyone has been relentless everywhere I've said this. This character looks fucking nuts. 'He's hard to play, he won't be an issue' like that is an issue at high level. I have to stop arguing with people and just accept low level players cannot see problems in a game.
There's Asuka, and there's GOBOU Asuka. They are different. Most of casual don't care about Asuka, since most of the player only can draw 20% of their potential.
I feel like s3 only broke him further. after playing with him for a bit, I'm able to just destroy neutral with wild rush without committing meter. He's definitely whacky and strong, but new players will struggle using him at first.
I think Asuka might be one of HC's worse matchups just for the fact that HC's gun doesn't stop projectiles, and Asuka has essentially the best projectiles in the game One of the best things to shut down steady aim and HC's zoning in general before he needs to restore focus is being able to get a projectile out before blocking a steady aim
seems like he's going to be really unstable for a double elimination tournament, you could just get unlucky during a set like Faust and down to loser's bracket. but it'd be hilarious to see asuka mirror GF, one can hope!
When this video came out I said that it didn't bother me as much because it required skill so from the outside he looked cool in action and now that I have fought a couple of Asukas that knew what they were doing I just have to say This character is a warcrime

Lore accurate Asuka vs. Lore accurate Happy Chaos
I tried Asuka and no way in hell was I doing all of that even though I was stoked to get a true zoner.
He's not really a true zoner, more of a situational all rounder. He's good at rushdown, footsies, or zoning depending on his spells and the mu.
Test case 3 was the real problems on top of gobou
Resources card type are trump card in their decks , wether it be reduce mana cost or regen , or draw redraw (bookmark) .
Yeah he’s got the flow chart down and just gonna get more optimized from here.
The main villian for 25 years is now playable for the first time, he should be S+ at all times or so god help me
I do understand how it shouldn't turn into a single player game, but I also feel like you can't take away the reward from asuka at the same time because like you said it's very hard to do, it takes a lot of execution, muscle memory, and above all mastery to do what gobo's doing in these clips. So, my question is, jiyuna, throwing away the fact that true balance with asuka may never be possible, say you were the head of the dev team, in what ways would you go about balancing asuka to where you don't take away the reward for his very difficult work, but also making his offense less 1 sided?
Its not, hes not that strong, just punch the cubes and watch for when he has tp spell
Genuinely
You arakune him
@@V2ULTRAKill I wasn't around during the blazblue era, what was the deal with arakune and how were they dealt with?
Bro, he is extremely hard to pick up. My brain hurts when playing him for first time.
I'm legit having hard time to even fight in arcade mode. He is harder than zato.
I think he is the character with highest potential in GGST.
They could make a card x fighting game based off him that would be kinda dope
Commenting on every video before Arakune BBcF combos, video 58. Congrats on your kid!
Congrats on becoming an irl guile main jiyuna 🎉
recently randomly gained an interest in asuka and looked up clips for him, gobou's gameplay made me wonder why no one else was playing him but i guess people are noticing the char now
i hope the char gets to destroy a big tourney before he gets nerfed to the ground itd be funny to see everyones reactions
It’s because he takes a lot of work. People just waiting for nerfs.
Wait, Jiyuna is a dad now? I feel old
I think we're entering the Gobou era boys..
Asuka is like playing an rpg with endless turn
character is hard as fuck…. He earned it
The thing is, he seems so hard that when someone plays him this good instead of getting worried or annoyed I just get excited lol
I know it's not okay to punish players for playing easier characters but idk he looks cool in action
the thing is the difficulty of a character is hardly a factor in fg. At best it gatekeeps a character from average player. Unfortunately, in this case Daisuke vision is shit.
Broken characters are fun at the start, but once they become commonplace the novelty wears off quick.
For sure, people don't understand that you can't really reward players too much for needing to do difficult things for a character because.... they literally will just do it
we've seen it time and time again, pros have no problem getting competent and figuring out technical characters - they still need to be balanced
An army of Asuka? That is a scary thought.
Exactly, just because it’s not happening NOW people don’t want to listen.
“There’s tons of gobou footage. It’s all like this”
real💀
Cube Gaming! Modern day vanilla Kokonoe is a funny and accurate example to describe Asuka. Also congrats again to your family on the baby Jiyuna!
0:02 I mean....thing with both JP and Asuka
Voiced by Tomokazu Sugita.
Revenge from his Ragna days?
looking forward to jiyuna strive season 3 content
Watching this video so Jiyuna can afford a fightstick for his daughter.
I'm a bad Nu-13 main in BBCF and even I wouldn't wish that kind of one-sidedness against anyone. :(
Ithink the addition of the new mechanics of Season 3 might allow characters to skip Asuka's singleplayer. We'll have to see.
There's Asuka, and there's GOBOU Asuka. They are different.
Most of casual don't care about Asuka, since most of the player only can draw 20% of their potential.
I had no idea it was this crazy....
This man is all doing it with his patented madman smile on his face most likely.
I expect the next strive evo to be a Yugi Oh tournament
The cubenado is insane 💀
Congratulations on fatherhood Jiyuna
He put a spike, on the ground.
I feel like s3 only broke him further. after playing with him for a bit, I'm able to just destroy neutral with wild rush without committing meter. He's definitely whacky and strong, but new players will struggle using him at first.
Hey congrats on the kid Jiyuna!
this is the type of character u would love to see gobou abd gobou alone to be able to do this, cos if anyone could itd be nightmarish
His Asuka somehow feels faster. Like, I see the animations for 2K 2D and it feels faster. How does he do it?
This is an accurate representation of Yu-Gi-Oh gameplay.
I think Asuka might be one of HC's worse matchups just for the fact that HC's gun doesn't stop projectiles, and Asuka has essentially the best projectiles in the game
One of the best things to shut down steady aim and HC's zoning in general before he needs to restore focus is being able to get a projectile out before blocking a steady aim
seems like he's going to be really unstable for a double elimination tournament, you could just get unlucky during a set like Faust and down to loser's bracket.
but it'd be hilarious to see asuka mirror GF, one can hope!
When this video came out I said that it didn't bother me as much because it required skill so from the outside he looked cool in action and now that I have fought a couple of Asukas that knew what they were doing I just have to say
This character is a warcrime
I wonder if he will actually start winning tournaments.
Was Asuka the secret benefactor behind the gamers8 Street Fighter 6 tournament? Because he really likes cubes.
The cuuuubes
Jiyuna out there threatening to pick up Asuka while he's grinding modern cammy on the other side of the fence ? I'll believe it when I see it, old man.
You're weird.
@@ANIMEILLUMINATI its a joke lol. People overrate how hard Asuka is to play.
Arakune was reborn in Asuka and I'm scared
Fuck the vid.
Congratulations on being a dad Jiyuna! Most love to you and your fam!
Funny Plus Frames go Brrrrrrrrr
Hey Jiyuna, will you go over what happened in Arcevo 2023?
Gobou Asuka showed the way..
Congratulations Jiyuna. May your child become the next savior of the FGC.
Unfortunate the release time for Asuka was so close to sf6 didn't have time to learn him 😔
I played him for 2 days then hopped on SF6.
What are some examples (in your opinion) of hard to get into high skill floor characters that are still well designed?
