The Fly Stop hook bending is interesting. I fish them in San Diego around Mission Bay. Never had one bend yet though. I'm going to check it out though. I guess I would have to actually catch fish to bend them.
I tie ugly fly's on cheap hooks, but I get all of my materials at my local shop. And my fly's back cast for trees with the best of them!

Excellent video. I have a suggestion for a video along the same lines as this one. You should do a video on fly tying subscription boxes. There’s a ton out there and people are always asking which one is best.

What do you think of hosting some sort of fly tying competition? People send you creations, you pick a winner, the winner gets a sticker, maybe you go fish the fly? Might be fun to watch.

I have a bunch of baitcasters and just now getting into streamer fishing...I think I did this backwards!
Local fly shop in my area, Ron's Fly's. He is probably 84 years old and sells great stuff. Nicholson Pa. It's in Northeastern Pa. The two best local rivers are the Lackawanna and the South Branch of the Tunkhannock. But an hour away is the West Branch of the Delaware which I have read is the best river east of the Mississippi.

Interesting comparisons , not sure the bent hook applies totally to the hook performance. Hooks generally don’t bend in the direction you were bending them since your pulling on the hook when you retrieve a streamer its more apt to straighten it or break . Still great information. Kelly ties the dungeon with a sparser head so it will take on more water. Commercial ties use too much hair according to the streamer god, so your opinion is correct.
Since you'll appreciate it, Big Y sells a Patuxent Special that isn't properly tied. They can take an L.

I have had good luck with Hill's Discount Flies. Out of Colorado and tied on good tempered hooks. I'm sure there are a bunch of other vendors but you gotta pick a few to look at. I get that. Stay huge!
I live in gloversville ny and the fly shack is only place i can really get flys around here unless you want to use walmarts junk flys, at the the fly shack i pay .89 cents a fly....i have had many of there flys break on me, the hook itself, had many start to un tie on me and almost every stimulator i got from the fly shack spins around the hook and i have prolly 30 stimmys in all sizes
One thing I've been noticing lately is some of the fly shops in my area don't even tie there own flies for the shop or if they do it's a very small limited selection seems that the shops order from other distributors for them and mark them up
For most if not all fly shops its impossible to keep up with inventory, The shop I work at consistently sells 180+ flies a day from June - Oct.

Great video analysis. Please define “Streamer”. A clouser pattern in Florida is a common go to pattern. Bonefish, Barracuda, Sharks, Snook and nasty Jack crevaille. Never bent or broke a hook. The material that the fly is tied from always fails first. Just my thoughts. All love and respect. Mike

Coming from west coast bass fishing and just beginning to start fly fishing, I’m starting to think I should just embrace my destiny and become a “streamer junky”. And when I say just starting fly fishing, I mean I bought an $80 combo from cabelas that still has the bar code on it, I don’t own a single fly and I just learned what a streamer was the other day. But bro, it’s gonna be lit. 😂

I use fly shack to save a buck or two i have had mixed results from them but when it comes to clousers i just tie my own i have my own way i like mine tied. Its interesting to see the quality difference between all the companies
Bending hooks still better than breaking hooks. I've bought hooks made of stainless glass one day... Understood too late why they stuck a "fragile" sticker on the shipping box...

Almost wish you would have included some flies from your local fly shop. Is there a big quality difference vs the flies you tested that justifies the price? Especially against Discount Flies…

@@Ew221 I fish clousers a ton. Have bought them from Discount Flies (I usually like their flies but find that the painted clouser eyes chip/flake off super fast), have bought them from several brick and mortar shops, and have tied at least 100 of them in the last year. The "name brand" (Fulling Mills, Umpqua, etc.) clousers from local shops are a fair bit better than the online version (better proportions, more durable eyes). The ones tied by locals in my area are a breed apart (liberal use of epoxy, super durable hooks, often tied w/ synthetics that hold up better in the salt/rocks). If your fish aren't leader shy, my take is to buy/tie the best clouser you can and then fish it with beefy tippet. If your fish are leader shy, then you need to find the sweet spot between durability/cost.

what kind of tippet are you using, that you'll be able to bend a hook like that while fishing?
Unpopular opinion, softer hooks save you flies, hard hooks snap, or your tippet does. Also on the topic of the deer hair heads, I've always been under the impression that the flat sides help streamers to swim left or right in between strips. Love your content none the less!
Oh and a little experiment, take a streamer hook that you would consider soft, tie some extremely heavy tippet on the heaviest rod you own, and attach that hook to something that isn't going to move. Lean on that thing and see if you can even get the hook to flex pulling as hard as you can. I doubt it with a 2/0 stainless closer of any quality

@@jordanrowe9097 I would be more interested in a strip set test. Maybe hook it into a ~5lb piece of wood and strip as hard as possible? I have bent some hooks strip setting on smb and lmb in the past.

I prefer to tie my own streamers because it’s cost effective and I can get the patterns I prefer easier that way. But the small stuff I buy and I use Big Y because they have been good for me. I used the local shop for awhile but personal reasons drove me away.

Ben, serious question here. I tie and have for 25 years. I tie my saltwater streamers on stainless for obvious corrosion reasons, but I tie my freshwater streamers almost exclusively on regular steel hooks so that, if the fly breaks off in a fish, it may rust out. Am I off track here? Was I taught wrong? You've got way more experience on the water than me so id love to hear what you think.
the "let the hook rust out" thing is a bit of a misnomer. there was a study with fish who were hooked deeply and let the hook come out on its own. the hooks came out in between 3 and 5 days, some sooner some later, but long before any rust could be the main factor. i believe fish eject hooks in a similar fation to how the human body and many others can eject, for example, splinters, with little to no intervention if given time.
I know florida requires non stainless hoks while shark fishing for that exact reason. I also tie my salt flies on stainless though. I don't want to spend 45 minutes tying a fly only for it to get wet and rust out
If you are using heavier tippet, SS hooks can bend. The forged high carbon, tin plated hooks (by various manufacturers) can be a better choice.
Use regular hooks because they rust after your line breaks. Conservation
Hooks dont rust if you rinse/wash them at the end of the day
I bought a pair of dungeons from the fly stop once... Looked the same and spun like a propeller in the water. I only cast them once and then threw them away :(
I’ve had that happen also. Sometimes steam can fix crushed or deformed deer hair, feather or rabbits zonker. I’ve had many come back to shape recently after watching Kelly Galloups video recommending it. Good fishing to ya! 🎣👍

two bucks for a "cheap" fly is expensive. here in bc Canada we buy from local fly shops for about 2 bucks a fly and 3-4 $ for streamer/salmon flies made buy local guys . cheap flies here to buy are superfly brand from Walmart or bass pro. but honestly your better off finding a local guy and put in a big order ..bulk =cheap usally. buy gear online not tackle or line.

If you had bent the hooks like they would bend when you actually fish I'd consider your test valid. tension vs compression on the metal...go inspect a house!
Steel behaves the same in tension and compression. And by the way, no matter which way you bend the hook, the cross-section of the hook material will see both tension and compression.

My point is, if you don’t think this will push people, even locals away from buying at their hometown shops, I think your sorely mistaken. Plus most shops, even small offer these same products at a much higher quality and will ship them anywhere for folks.
