I learned "No More the Moon Shines on Lorena" from Jerron Paxton. The song was originally published by Louis Staab in 1889, and was recorded by the Carter Family in 1930. My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned d♯G♯D♯G♯A♯ (gCGCD dropped four frets). I tend to leave out the final verse as I find the song more poignant without it.

Beautiful melody and lyrics. Great playing and such a unique vocal, especially when the tune fell into the low chord in the middle of the chorus/verse. Thank you for sharing! Very cool to hear the banjo/tune played in three different styles. Can't decide which one was my favorite.

Stabb is a pretty common German last name. While some Jews use the last name it's not specifically Jewish. Staab's history isn't well documented but what I did find just identifies him as German with no mention of being Jewish. His wife Diana Uvedale Ashton seems to be the daughter of a Reverend which leads me to believe there is no Jewish connection there. I did find mention that Staab played piano at a meet up in his home town of Chicago for Lincoln during his presidential campaign which is interesting and definitely lends credence to the assertion that this is a protest song of sorts.

Hello Clifton! Thank you so much for this video. I am saving up for Banjo Heritage (1 hour of practice= $10) but I don't want to develop bad habits in the meantime. Mainly, my right hand is way too tense and looks like I'm paralyzed. I know it's nicknamed clawhammer for a reason, but I think I'm taking that too far! Is it discouraged to rest the three fingers on the right hand on the drum for stability or will that ruin the sound? It also helps to really rest my thumb on that fifth string (when I practice enough to transition my thumb back after plucking). Any tips?

Hey! I'm a beginner with you. I'm learning cluck ol hen slowly but surely. Sometimes it feels utterly hopeless but with steady practice it really does get better. I don't think Clifton is a huge proponent of tabs anyway. I say go for it! I am planning on buying Banjo Heritage once I gin up enough practice hours to convince myself I'm committed. You've got this! Just take it one tiny bit at a time until you really have it down. I'm trying to find a good instructor but it is hard to find someone truly old style with Clifton's philosophy!

@@gabmatth I am soooo with you on that. I think that is the journey! It sure is worrying as a newbie, though! Sometimes it seems darn impossible, and I'm sure you're more advanced than me! Have you ever played video games? You know when you get to a bit that frustrates you so much and you'll think you'll never get through it or figure it out? But you just keep hacking at it and trying new things and then--all of a sudden--boom! You did it! And you get that euphoric feeling? Well, it's about time I applied that skill to real life, ha! I think it's the same with the banjo. I'll be the first one to say that having a teacher must help a ton--or at least a community like Clifton's Banjo Heritage!

So.....i am in the process of getting my first banjo and i want to play old time music. I watched your videos on tuning to my singing voice. I sing at A2-A4. Will a banjo work that low? I know i had issues with my guitar when i tuned to low. Sorry if its a dumb question.

The song’s story is so horrific the term ‘nice little pop song’ hardly does it justice. Hard to imagine the song’s writer was oblivious to that?
Many "nice pop" songs cover tough topics and are/could be protest songs, some are even written from the perspective of the abused. I think a lot of time the "nice" aspect of it comes from the melody/chord arrangement, that gives it a nice sound even while the lyrics are dark. Pumped up Kicks comes to mind.
@CliftonHicksBanjo, I do think a content warning at the start about racial language/history would go a long ways in reducing harm to anyone unsuspecting. It's your channel though just a suggestion.
