    Russell Aitken, the third owner of Champ Soleil, also enjoyed fine automobiles. He always drove to the Newport Country Club in a black Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II convertible, with a black top and a red leather interior. This was in the late 70s. It was glorious. (I happened to caddy for the members). The owners of many of the cottages you have profiled were members of the club.

    In 1970 I bought my Bright Yellow 914/6 off the showroom floor at Peter Fuller Porsche on Comm Ave in Boston, Put 70.000 miles on it before installing a 2.4 S engine and then another 70.000 miles. 4 trips across the country To Porsche Parades. Slap on a set of slicks and add straight pipes and it was a great track day car. The suspension and brakes were 911 parts in the six - different from the 4. ( thus the 5 bolt Fuchs wheels instead of the 4 bolt VW wheels on the 4 cylinder ) They only made 2,300 of them as opposed to 100.000 + of the 4 cylinder, Never should have sold it.

    I love these house/ car comparisons. I spent my entire life restoring historic homes and historic cars. Like Jay I appreciate tech but can't live with too much of it. In our case we have a rather large 18 room 6,000 sf 123 yr old historic mansion. I chose to remove the oil burner after burning 5,000 gals of oil and the house was still very cold and installed a 600,000 btu anthracite coal steam boiler! The coal fields are just up the road here in PA. The home is very warm with no outside wall insulation but when i remarried my wife requested a/c so I personally installed a Spac-Pac a.c system designed for old homes already complete Hence our modern tech! Thanks again for another great show!

    The 914 was a collection of incredible ideas poorly executed and marketed at the wrong time. I used to fix them and could not believe how bad the shifter was - but what a concept.

    • @darrelrobbins

      Adjusting the valves on the standard 914 was a nightmare. Hard to imagine servicing a larger motor in that car.

    • @jjhpor
      @jjhpor 5 місяців тому +2

      The shifter was only bad in the early models. In 1973 the transmission was modified ("side shifter") and it worked great. I tracked one for 17 years, 5 with the original 2.0 four cylinder and the rest with a 2.7 six. As far as "poorly executed" is concerned I would say that too many compromises were made for a price point. The car was amazingly tough but I don't think I would have appreciated it as a daily driver; lousy heater/defroster, loud interior, open the hood for gas, and more. It sure was fun to drive fast.

    Osborne came up with the best line ever for people that ask if I have read all the books in my library. not sure I can manage the snear. The corvair is valued by pilots for it's engine - not just race drivers.
    The mansion was superb. I think Leno is wrong about resto-mods , the Icons handle superbly and nothing is as impressive as a 49 Pontiac with a 500 hp engine and modern suspension ...
    I had a 74 914 which I bought new for peanuts in 1976. I drove my Jensen Healey so much, I sold the Porsche at about 50k miles for $1000 just for the space. Great episode, proves Leno can play the straight man . Cheers -

    I love that Lakewood, the Corvair line were so interesting and nearly forgotten by most people except in reference to Ralph Nader, unfortunately. In the other hand, they remain very affordable and interesting classic boys as a result.
    Even 4-cylinder 914s have been affected by the rise in values of air cooled Porsches. I was lucky to buy one when there were still cheap and should have kept it. Honestly, the interior quality and clean design still holds up well today., though you didn’t show much of the interior in this video. The early Boxsters picked up this idea of a practical (2 trunks!) mid-engine Porsche so well.

      Not true. I've driven them both on the track. I was faster in a 911 with a smaller engine. My 914 had a modified 2.7 liter six, dynoed at 217hp. I was faster in a 911E with a 2.4 engine (165 hp). Both cars had similar suspension modifications. I had a lot more experience in the 914 too. I was surpirsed and disappointed. The 914 was mine, the 911 wasn't.

    • @OYisit
      @OYisit 5 місяців тому +2

      @@jjhpor No two cars are ever alike even mass produced ones. I would question the tuning of your mods the 914 has a much better polar inertia stat and is mid engine the 911 had to add counter weights to the front end to compensate for the imbalance behind the rear axle. Its basic knowledge to be competitive in the highest motorsport arenas the engine is always located within the wheelbase.
