Special thanks to Spanky for filming this video for me. : ) My last Honda Accord video was
very well viewed, but lacking in good sound, stability, and lighting so I did another one with some help. Enjoy High Detail How to do a timing belt and water pump Honda Accord VTEC - Авто та транспорт
This guy is doing a great job not only on the fixing of this car, but on the step by step how it's done. Great job.
This has got to be one of the best produced, informative and helpful videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. The detail, the filming and even the ergonomic suggestions are great. Thank you very much. I have to replace my head gasket on my 2001 Honda Accord. Everything was fine until I got to removing the timing belt. This video will let me do it without worry. Thanks again.
Thank you so much!
My '95 Honda had it's timing belt replaced again today and I hope the tech who worked on it has the skill and professional attitude you show here - doing each step carefully because it made you feel good even if client never knew thr difference. Educational and impressive.
@@briansmobile1 hello. Im looking to buy the timing belt kit. Can you recommend one from Amazon ? What would be the best name brand kit to get? Thank you
@@danielsantana6858 Gates timing belts and Aisin water pump, are the best name brand. I would recommend changing the timing belt adjustment pulleys as well, those would be Koyo name brand. And also there is a balance shaft seal retaining clip that should be used to keep that seal from backing out. Those are only like 7 bucks.
Thank you Brian. I just did my 2nd civic timing belt and now I will attempt the accord as well. I would never even try this; but your videos have given me the confidence to do it and save a lot of money.
I don't understand why you need to put the long bolt into the oil pump. It has no timing position correct?
they're a great car. No complaints. Usually only have to do timing belts and starter motors on those. That 1.8 liter is about bullet proof.
Best video on this car ! F23. Watched them all this is the most detailed and accurately described.
He makes more money, videos, and subscribers than I do. That's his goal and he nails it with less effort than I put in. That's got to count for something.
I wish that I knew to whom you are comparing yourself. To Jesus? I am trying to be like Jesus. I did not know that he made videos, though.
He's really good. I like his video because he tell you everything. An talk in the video. The best in my book!
You're welcome- great to hear from you Doug!
Thanks for the refresher.
In video think you forgot to remind everone to pull counter balance bolt and put plug back in.
Thanks again
Thanks for the feedback! Perhaps I'll do some more like this.
You've got it. Tension on the left slack on the right. And on the cam balance belt slack on the top tension on the bottom.
Wow. Amazing video man! It was very thorough and it made it a lot easier for me to change my timing belt.
RON PAUL!!!!!! Educational and Inspirational!!!!
thanks bro i have a 97 honda accord lx no vetech and this vid just worked me right through got the job done in about 3 or less hours with water brake and food lol but it hepled me save so much money. :-)
What a great detailed video!
Awesome video!
Questions:
1. The outer timing belt tensioner - is that self adjusting or manually set? If so, how much?
2. I might be doing a 05 Odyssey and 04 Pilot timing belt. Obviously V6 motors but is the procedure basically the same, with 2 heads and more fun w/ the rear head?)
3. Why does the valve cover go over the belt cover?? I can't think of any reason to take the valve cover off, unless that's Honda's way of strongly recommending a valve adjustment at the same time?
Thanks!!
Love the Ron Paul Poster!!
When I'm not filming I can do it in 2-3 hours. Sometimes less if there's little to no rust or other time eaters.
Even though this video is 10 years old or older it's a great guide but allow me to add my 2 cents about something I see that's been missed and trust me if you're about to change your timing belt you'll thank me! Replacing this timing belt much like all other repairs is always the easiest to do in the video and your mind before your attempt! Now go forward my young knuckle buster and reach for your destiny, hopefully not ending in a phone call to the fire department because you've had enough of that car and burnt it to the ground because you never liked Hondas anyways or wanted to fix it, that was your wife's great idea!
Sweet! I plan to use it as a ginie pig for me learning how to tune engines and stuff mainly the computer to as close as I can get to a race car. Sorry for any miss spelled words, I am a horrible speller at times.
Hey Brian. This is probably one is the clearest tutorials I've ever seen. Thank you. But my question is, how long dud it actually take you to to replace the belt? I notice this video is 55.5 minutes long with just a couple of edits. The reason I ask is cuz I do not have all of the necessary tools for this and will take it to a shop, but want to make sure i'm not getting over charged on labor time. Thanks in advance! I have a 98 civic with an after market 97 1.8 vtech btw :-)
The Gates kit isn't that high quality based on the Amazon reviews that say the Chinese water pump goes bad. Get the Aisin kit (about $190) which uses OEM components. The original pump on the Honda is an Aisin.
brian0918
That sounds far simpler than ordering individual parts from Majestic!
Thank you for videos...My Accord is a 94 EX v-tec... Does this video apply to mine?
Great video, very helpful.. nice to see people such as yourself being helpful
YOU are welcome!
lol 52:44 "I dont want to be a super douchebag"
Great video once again Brian, I like the small stories and tips along the way always entertaining.
awesome video, i just finished doing my timing belt, thanks brian
I wished everybody would make a good video like this
Thank you so much. I really like your video and know how to change a belt with water bumb. So thank you and really appreciate.👍👍👍
great video on this repair considering i own basically that same car except mines the 3.0 motor thanks for showing it.
Thanks for posting, great vid, very helpful with the details.
I wish you would have done a vid on the valve adjustment as well though
You're welcome! Thanks
You're welcome my friend!
brian when are you going to show us how to do replace the timing belt on a mitsubishi eclipse v6 3.0. there nothing about that engine on youtube. i would really appreciate it
Great video, as always, I got a question, what happen if the small belt called the balancer belt, is to tigth or too loose, when you installed it, the engine will run ok, or will be a problem? Thank you ,
Everardo Camacho i dont think it makes a difference. Of course how loose is too loose? You dont want it to fall off.
Thanks for the lengthy video. I like your Truth poster in the background :).
Question: I melted some of the lower plastic belt cover when trying to heat the crank bolt with mapp gas. It didn't distort very much and only the bottom half of the opening that the crank sagged a little about 1/2 inch. To me it doesn't look like there's room for a whole lot of dirt to get in there. However the top half did sag enough to rest on the crank pulley. What I'm wondering is if the plastic that's touching will just wear down enough to create clearance again or rub enough to melt it again. It seems to run and sound fine.
samboheena it’s plastic
My water pump gasket seems skinner than the original. I've got 3m weather strip adhesive. Brian said to put between the gasket and the water pump (so it is not on top of the gasket.) Do I want to wait until adhesive gets solid, or do I want to install the water pump right away?
Thanks Jake
Would it be the same process for the 2005 V6 3.0 engine?
Awesome vid thanks for sharing!
Less room, more time, more tedious, and tighter crank pulley. You have to time 2 cams and not one. If you don't know what you are doing, my suggestion would be to not attempt without someone with you that has done a few. All Honda engines are interference motors, turning the cams independently of the crank can cause severe engine damage. The cams are spring loaded due to the valve springs. One bump of the cam, and your engine could be toast.
Nice RON PAUL poster. thanks for the help
Nice! Is it pretty much the same for a 2011 Hyndai Accord?
WINNER!!!!!
So were the valves still in tolerance? How much did they need tightning?
You're welcome!
Great Video. Thank You. Now I need to get to work.
Great dIY video. Have done mine several years ago, but this is right-on!
Wow this video is well done. I learned alot Thanks
Hey Brian, I know this is an older video, but when you tightened the Power steering pump belt did you pry it from the front side or the back side of the pump? I'm sure when I get around to it I'll figure the best leverage, but thought I'd ask. Thanks for the great detail.
Dano C. From ghe back
Please make video on Honda Accord 2004 ex , timing chain replacement , my car need one and me don't know how and so scare to do wrong
I'm about to use this as my main guide for doing the same job on my car. I notice you did not mention torque specs once or use a torque wrench at all. Maybe it's not that vital.
That valve cover gasket treatment was pretty ghetto. What does a gasket kit cost, $15? Cheap customer.
Water pump just went on my scion TC 2.4. 41,000 miles. I'm suprised but I'm learning Toyota water pumps are junk and the smaller 1.5 dies around 25,000 miles. Was warrantied so that's good. Do you do a lot of toyotas water pumps ?
Thanks!
excellent video !!!
Was the oil Balancer seal sb not out yet during this filming? Crazy little seal 😕
how do you do the valve adjustment? Would be great if you can show that part too.
I've got lots of videos on Toyota, Subaru, and on dirt bikes. It's the same procedure, just use the settings on the emissions sticker on the bottom of the hood.
Thanks Brian! I really like your videos and have helped me in to repair my own vehicles.
Brian I have a little bit question about the engine.. cuz I have a 1990 honda accord lx f22A1.. is it that kind of engine 2.3 can fit on my 1990 honda acoord.
Arnold Baclig you have the greatest engine known to mankind .
All jokes aside the f22a1 is non vtec but that f23 is vtec. They are very similar but still a lil bit diffrent. Im not sure on all the differences, im still learning myself... all i know is i would love to do a h22 swap on my cb7.
Lisle at Henderson's bumper to bumper.
sounds cool, I think it would make a pretty cool video.
Could you detail what the differences between this engine and the F23A5 non-VTEC used in the 2001 DX Value Package differ, if at all? I cannot find *any* videos on this weaker (135 hp) base model engine. I am assuming that the marks and such will be the same, but I am afraid to just open it up and find that it is different from the F23A1 with VTEC. Thanks!
Good video...very helpful...thanks
Is it the same procedure for a 1999 accord 4cyl? I know it goes from 98-02, but I just want to make sure. Thanks
Neftali Valentin ya
I just got this done at pep boys…. new timing belt, water pump, oil change on a 2006 honda accord. It cost me $900. It's pretty pricey.
I thought 2002 was the last year for timing belt. 2006 has timing chain.
Chuck Joseph it is. Pep boys just got an easy $900
Time for bed but going to favorite it to watch it later.
I watched 3other videos before I found this one. . I took the pin next to the crank shaft pulley out and now idk how to get it back in
hey Brian, which engine is that?
I wonder if it can fit in a 98 civic
how much do you think is the labor rate to get all of these done, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, camshaft tensioner, water pump, tensioner belt
I heard it can be quite expensive, how much did you charge the customer for this job?
i have a 98 accord lx 4 cyl
If it has A/C flat rate time for the water pump/timing belt is 3.5-4 hrs (According to Real-time labor guide). When you change the water pump you're removing all the other stuff.
What would you recommend if your cam balance belt broke? I have no idea what to do since all the pulleys are out of alinement. Are there marks on the cam balance like the POA on the main pulley? The rear pulley is the oil pump, correct?
Jonathan Scruggs just line em up at tdc with the bolt locked in the servoce port and your good
hi every time start my honda civic ex 02 in the morning belt squeak and when the car is warm squeak is gone don't know which one or belt are not tight. all belt are new How can i check this problem can you tell how to check this problem step by step et me know thanks?
Normally about 3 hours.
amazing video
I know this engine is identical to the 98 Odyssey but I promise you the lower timing cover is total insanity on the Odyssey. I had to take the front stabilizer arm off the suspension and raise/lower the engine three times. 10X harder than the rest of the timing belt proccedure.
Well done! I watched only for fun!
thanks. the best
What the average cost of timing belt and waterpump replacement??
Is $560 plus tax a good deal ,by garage that has a very good rating for Honda repairs...
If Timing belt breaks while in operation is bent valves certain or not so much...
To your question about the timing belt breaking, yes, the F23A1 VTEC engine is what's called an "interference type" engine. That means there is no clearance between the valves and the cylinder. So if the timing belt breaks, you'll have a very bad day.
ClarksonsinUSA i seen a f22 that had the timing belt shredded while in operation so i replaced the belt & it cranked up with no signs of bent valves....
So you can get lucky sometimes.
Great video, Thanks!
I have a 98 Honda accord with the 2.3 l engine. Timing belt broke while driving on the highway. Is this motor a an interference motor? With 166000 miles is it worth digging into it
I do believe it is an interference engine & I know this is late response but for anyone else asking the same question yes it's worth the gamble because when the timing belt ripped on a friends 92 accord we replaced it & it started right up with no signs of engine damage. Belt was only around $40 at local auto store but i could've gotten it even cheaper online.
Im replacing a water pump on my 96 accord . when I took the old one off I found some oil inside hole where the water pump goes is this ok ? Plz Plz help I gotta get back on the road soon.
Also what if i don't have the tools you have, what will i need to use?
calizza waters 10mm 12mm 14mm 16mm 17mm 19mm long and short sockets and wrenches. Crankshaft holding tool, high end impact wrench, lisle crank socket, small med and large torque wrenches, pry bar, pliers, screw drivers, funnel. Extra jack for the engine. If you do the seals then a seal installer/puller kit
calizza waters you invest in some of your own tools or you cough up the money to a mechanic. What ever works best for you.
Thank you.
great video, thanks
I'm having idle issues with my 1993 accord 5 speed 2.2 replaced iacv tps new head water pump radiator timing belt cap rotor plugs wires. Now My idle is at 3000 after I replaced the tps help me please
I just noticed that your arms are like Popeye's. Lol great video
Is this much different then a 92 honda accord ?
are there no timing marks on a honda belt?
26:19 I forgot to put a bolt in the rear " I forgot " and this is my first time changing water pump and timing belt. That rear engine balance gear how do you line it up for the rear oil pump. Is it crucial to be lined up?
Ronald, I have the same problem.. Did you have any information on this been lined up?
The engingin might vibrate is all
just watched your honda accord vtec timing belt and water pump video. my question is can you take just the bottom of the timing cover off. Thanks
sandy schwink ???? Wha????? How will u get the belt on the cam then???
Good video . I need mine done to . Can you do it ?
I'm headed into this job, and I'm glad I watched your vid first . . . well, actually yours was the 3rd or 4th I've watched, but your obvious know-how along with some well-placed foresighted and cautionary advice ( i.e. , , , don't back off the alt. adjuster 100 %, I thought it was really decent of you to demo how difficult it is to re-attach the darn thing ;-) !! ), the main reason I also preferred Haynes Manuals to Chilton . . . H's always seemed to give a bit of, "if you do this . . . then that", kind of advice.
Overall . . . Great Job !! . . . and thank-you !!
BTW . . .I don't know what/if " Spanky" got "compensated" for her excellent efforts, but if all she got was entertainment value, I expect it was almost worth it for that alone !!
Huzzah Spanky !!
You're welcome!
Thanks!
Keep in mind, without the big air gun briansmobile1 has, you need either a chain wrench or the crankshaft pulley tool to hold the crank pulley still. Usually these pulley bolts are on really tight and when you undo them it sounds like you broke something. I've done many timing belts in Hondas, Acuras and Toyotas and it is pretty similar. with regards to 4 cylinders.
The FSM says to use the crankshaft pulley tool. I wish I had realized I could use my chain wrench. Oh well!
I like when you said "so take your time and enjoy it" isn't that the truth! I mean why get in a hurry and screw it up? LOL, sometimes you have to stop and drink some coffee while inspecting it, then think about it, then talk about it, then occasionally stop and... smell the roses. You mentioned Scotty Kilmer, you watch him too? I'm a subscriber of Scotty, I like his video's, sure he doesn't give complete details, and any half ass mechanic should know a few things anyways before they get greasy, but if you have a question at least he responds and interacts with other youtuber's, where a lot of youtuber's will not.
Get it back to stock. Wrecking yards and the dealership will have the OEM parts you need. Re Engineering is a lot harder and involves more trial and error than you may want to mess with- otherwise you wouldn't be asking me.
So...somewhere there's an Accord rollin around with a 6x bolt hangin out of the balancer shaft alignment hole...
Wouldn't that be a tragic detail to forget??
I was raised to be very specific. It's very natural for me to give details like that. It's more me than the USA as a whole. However, being in the US whith so much SAE (Society of American Engineers) and Metric mixed it's not a bad idea to be very specific I think. Metric fasteners are quite rare. They have been a special application themselves. It doesn't cost you much time to be specific unless you debate it, then you may be funny. : )
Get nuts and bolts of various sizes. Weld the nuts to pipe or put them into a vice. Tighten the bolts till they snap off. Do the same thing with threaded aluminum until they strip. I had an apprentice named Steven about five years ago. He was completely green. We spent a whole day destroying fasteners to give him the feel of when it's too much.
YOU are not poor unless you decide you are. You might not have money right now. That's different. Remember you are inventive, creative, and determined. Those are all things inside of you that constitute YOU. "Poor" is an illusion of things that are external and don't describe YOU.
Not by much. I actually have a video (with bad music in the background I'm told) on a 1992 Honda Accord. The film quality is poor, but the info is good. Also I think Ericthecarguy has one for sale on his web site that is only $10.
There was some slack in the timing belt between the cam and crank drive gear. You'll find your belt is off by one tooth. The fix is to tear it back down and re set the timing belt. The noise is the belt vibrating from being loose.
Not much difference. You do need to remove a bolt on the back of the block and insert a long 6mm diameter rod or bolt to hold timing. That's on my other Accord timing belt video. I recommend watching both.
