A thing happened: apparently quite a few of you have contacted the eBay seller from whom I bought my gate, mentioning this video. So he reached out to me and offered a 10% discount to viewers off the eBay prices for anyone going direct. Andy’s a lovely guy, runs his business solo from his workshop in Lincolnshire, sourcing all the redwood pine from his local timber merchant with delivery in just a few days. He can do bespoke sizes to fit any gap. Give him a call on 01522 697793 or email graysgates@gmail.com and mention my name/this video. ---- Judging from the comments, it seems I wasn't the only one unaware of the difference between red and white wood as it basically looks the same in store so here's a decent comparison table: elliotts.uk/redwoods-vs-whitewoods 👍
Thanks Mark, I can't tell you how many potential ideas I have - another garden room, wood store, chicken run, bee hive, tiny house, tree house, swimming pool etc 🙈🙈🙈
Fantastic colour on the end result. Great tip on the red and white wood. I’m so excited for you with so many projects in your lovely new home. Congratulations
Thanks Roger. Yeh I was really pleased with the result given that the stain had probably sat in the garage for decades. It goes far, I've got loads left 😁
I'm going to echo many of the previous comments and say what am amazing garden you have and beautiful location your home is in. Wow. Fabulously detailed video as always Ali; there is no one out there that does it better 👌
Sds punches straight though the wood and the wall, then just screw the concrete screw in. Doing the middle one first makes leveling the while thing easier too. Takes 5 mins to attach it. 👍🏻
Certainly at some point. I mean to turn the garage into a workshop in the meantime. If you noticed the rusty tools when I was doing the washer, it's because the roof is falling apart and leaking so if I can squeeze it in this year I plan to completely replace the roof and do some things I didn't for the garden room.
@@AliDymock Ouch! I hope you bought it as a fixer upper, instead of it being a nasty surprise? I had that, bought a house, then found out the boiler was condemned and had to be replaced. I had to beg British Gas to turn the supply back on, under the strict instruction that the boiler stayed off
Good job on the walkthrough gate. I was surprised when you started walking down your narrow siding and then how far back and wide your property is! Very nice.
I used this video for some help and ideas when I replaced my side gate yesterday... May have even used the same eBay seller for the gate! Chuffed to bits... Keep up the good work Ali 👍🏻
Theirs a great product I’ve seen used by landscapers on jobs which is basically a membrane that adheres to the bottom of the post with heat from a blow torch. Prevents the posts rotting in the ground.
Great video! Its a year later and I'm wondering how the Code lock is holding up to the outside world? Is it still reliable or has it started to rust in the wet weather as I'm thinking about doing something similar!
Nice video, I will steal your brilliant idea of caulk ( filler ) around the pole. When i am ready to install my gate with the help a professional . Thank you for posting
Hi, I found this video very helpful 👍👍 ill be doing exactly the same this coming weekend. I just wanted to check if the digital lock worked okay after a while? I'd really like to use one but I've had mixed reviews. Just double checking before I buy one! Thanks.. fantastic channel 🔥
I had a local steel fabricators make up a gate frame out of angle iron, they drilled holes and primed it for fifty quid.. Bargain. I run the slats horizontally and it looks really good 👍. Also when you have your caulking gun out, silicon around the post you set in concrete between the wood and the concrete, no water will get in then. Lovely job and lovely garden and area you got there bro.
That is a bargain - I feel my local ones would charge a bomb for that work. Very good tip reg siliconing around the post, I never thought of that. I'll mention that in the fencing vid 👍
£500 for a steel framed hardwood gate might sound expensive but I think it's actually quite good value when you think about what's involved in building one. The issue that I have found with timber framed gates is that they swell and contract considerably due to exposure to the elements meaning that you will have constant issues with the striker alignment and or jam alignment. Secondly the addition of the header is a blessing in disguise as it will help to keep rain off of the gate preventing the mentioned issues.
How did the gate do over winter for movement? I made a similar gate last year, including a top brace as my 3x3 post moved too much and a combination lock. Due to the tight tolerances needed for this style of lock I've had problems with the gate swelling over winter and sticking.
I’m going to show the Evolution properly in the fence video. I tend to use both, and like both but there are things the Evolution can do that the Parkside can’t!
Hi going to be installing my own soon, between house and not yet built garden room, wanted to save as much space as possible, so looking at 76cm, what's the reason for the post for the hinge? is it a bad idea to hang straight from the masonry? great work
Great video with just the right amount of detail, awesome. I am looking to replace our side gate and including a push button combination lock also however the current gate latch is fixed to a fence panel that sits in a concrete post, any suggestions on how or where I should fit the strike plate? Or do you think I should think about a separate post? Only problem is the space between the concrete post and the wall is fairly limited so not sure if I could put a post between them reducing the width further. Thanks in advance
Hi Darryl, glad you liked it. Umm if I have this right in my head you can either attach a batten to the concrete post and then have a little rectangle cut away for the strike plate. This word mean you are only reducing the gate width slightly OR you could try drilling out a bit of the concrete post for the latch to go on, but might rattle. I’d go for the batten or replace the post with a timber one 👌
Ali Dymock great advice, I think I am going to have to go with fixing a new post to the old concrete one... unable to replace the concrete post as it’s the neighbours 😉
Personally I would put anchors in the brick (it's more secure) and after accounting for the hole to flush the bolt and washer to the edge of the 4x4., just add the remainder of the length shy of the length of the anchor. If using masonry screws I would screw shy of the full length of the brick. This accounts for not letting moisture and water past the hole in the brick. Silicone is good to use on screw in the 4x4 to stop any H2O from getting inside the wood. Hope that helps.
Great video as always. Any chance of a more detailed look at fitting the combi lock? I need to install one soon and you're by far the most educational maker out there.
I was wondering whether to go into depth about it or not. I'm going to add the same one to the gate in the fence I've just finished so will do a video specifically on installing that lock 👍
For sure, it does seem to have discouraged him as a kitten and he just seems to venture into the woods at the back rather than the road which is good. Hasn't stopped other cats coming in of course and scratching the gate!
Pretty long! The last bit that tapers isn't so useful but still very nice to have and the woods almost feel like an extension of the garden. I hope it doesn't come across as showing off at all, the house needing a lot of work was the trade-off, that and a big mortgage.
Ali Dymock didn’t think you where showing off at all, I only know you from the videos that you post and personally think you should be proud of what you have. Keep up the good work 👍 thanks for taking the time to reply
Cutting wood with sandals on. My toes curled. 😂 great video. I think you deffo could of made the door for less than £60 instead of buying one off ebay.
Sorry, I should be more more careful, especially on camera. I reckon you're right. If you check out my mini fencing series I make a double gate from scratch for very cheap 👍
heheh well that's what I was thinking: Having a leaderboard and first to X points gets a prize, but I'm not sure what questions to ask or what the prize would be BUT bank the 10 points for now and we'll see 😉
No need for prizes, you've already provided me with loads of information and inspiration so far for my own garden room project albeit that I'm yet to get off the ground, and extremely sloping ground at that! Load bearing retaining walls and all that jazz I'm afraid..... Thanks again.
Those code locks arent very secure, just reach through the hedge to open. i use a gate lock that takes a euro cylinder, changed all the cylinders in my doors to the same key, makes life so much easier only having 1 key for everything, just hope u dont lose the key somewhere! Haha
Great idea! I guess having any kind of gate helps with security - just totally open before! Not a lot will stop a determined thief though, you just gotta remove temptations from the opportunists!

Oh my Lord, that garden is immense! Beautiful.
Lovely plot you've got there, look forward to the various projects!

You have an amazing garden. Absolutely stunning. Would love that amount of outdoor space. Such a nice setting next to the woods.
Stunning garden you’ve got there buddy, the amount of potential to do all sorts is huge
It was definitely a big factor behind buying this house, you just don't get these size gardens with new builds.
My regular gate heard about my side gate and now I got my side gate as my main gate.
Fantastic colour on the end result. Great tip on the red and white wood. I’m so excited for you with so many projects in your lovely new home. Congratulations

You'll like the fencing video then - lots of challenges to overcome!
Wow, beautiful garden!! It will keep you busy and entertained forever! 🙂
Mostly weeding!
What a garden. You'll have that looking stunning Ali.
As usual, love the video 👍

The camera was on its widest so probably looked bigger than it actually is but yeh we bought the house partly for the big garden :)
nice "stranglers - golden brown" reference!
I'm so glad you added texture like sun 😆
Nice video!
😉
Great info, I have a some gates & fencing to install this year. Looking forward to seeing more projects from this stunning garden 👌
Great video lots of greet info
I'm planning on building my own gates so will be interesting to see how you do yours at the bottom of your garden

Also gave me the idea to use the code lock from screwfix!
Nice one Ryan! Be careful not to lose the little spring inside the lock as it can pop off while fixing.
Theirs a great product I’ve seen used by landscapers on jobs which is basically a membrane that adheres to the bottom of the post with heat from a blow torch.
Prevents the posts rotting in the ground.
Looks great, and what a fantastic garden!
Thanks Dave!
Can't wait for the next video to 👍
Looking forward to the follow up videos 😊👍
Awesome video! Very well explained thank you! Are the lightweight hinges still going strong after a few years? Cheers from France !😊

Best of luck!
what size wood did you use for the frame in the back? and what size for the panels on the front?

Yeh agreed. If we had the funds spare I think steel framed is the best option. Good point on the header, a silver lining i hadn't thought of 👍
Mate you’ve got yourself a mahoosive garden!! Reckon you can fit 2,3,4 outbuildings in that!!!
That would be fun!

Brilliant again Ali!

Thanks for the feedback, it's good to know. I think it's because I have such a basic knowledge that everything I learn seems worth sharing :)
Great video as always, I’m putting up a side gate this weekend. What project are you working on at the moment?
hoop nails! LOL, staples our kid, staples.
Haha I know, but they're not like other staples so I call them hoop nails 😛
Great work with the door but I'd sort out that drain pipe on the wall as well
Nice Job Ali, Stay Safe Mate !!!.

Nope! All good! Helps that the boards run vertically
Great video, might have to beef up my side gate 👍
Do it. It’s a nice little project for lockdown
These things are the fucking best idea ! This is definitely on my list 😍😍😍
