  • Today we are continuing on from a few videos back and tearing into the 361 big block mopar that was in my 1973 dodge charger turbo car. I started noticing excessive blow by and I figured that it would not hurt to look inside and check it out while it was removed from the car, just in case. What I found was way more than I bargained for and now my plans are starting to change while I decide what to do next.

Someone would like a 361 for their resto job. Take note of the old one piece oil control rings.

NW! You have to save that block! What is you buy a big boat?? It will be a great anchor for it. Actually, some young hotrodder might have fun going through it and build a nice N/A street engine out of it.??? Thanks for sharing and Cheers from Motown, Home of Detroit Muscle!

I would say at your level of performance you need some Forged pistons.
    Thanks for sharing. 👍

Definately would be a wise investment! The new big block also has cast pistons but only for now! Gotta save up for the good stuff 💪

      @@nightwrencherperformance I hear ya.
I understand there are always budgets to contend with.
      Good luck with your build.👍👍

You need forged pistons to run a turbo and throw those bearing away their junk. I'm sure you don't have x-ray vision to look through those bearings to see if their breaking apart inside.

I never had the intention of putting forged pistons in this motor. Doing so would open a whole other can of worms that I dont want to deal with right now. I picked up a new shortblock. I'm gonna go through it in the next video. It'll be much better suited for this than the 361 ever was

Bore the block use small block 400 chevy pistons u will have to find connecting rods look engine master 361. build my 1975 charger was built by tom engles he had set it up with chevy small block pistons where he got conecting rods i have no idea he built the motor 1985 i had the car up until 1997 when it was totaled in a 3 car accident

You can bore the block to 4.155 and then use 440 rods bushed down to a .990 wrist pin but you would end up with a 1.98 rod ratio and the assembly would have to be balanced. Another option would be use a stroker crank with the stock rods bushed down to .990 and then use shorter pistons. Thats the better idea but you still end up with mis matched coolant passages so the better option is to switch to a 383 or 400 block, stroker crank, stock rods and short bigger pistons

Unfortunately, I think it’s just not worth building. It cost the same to build a 440, so why dump all that money into such a small bored engine? But maybe someone needs it for a factory resto.

I was doing the math yesterday and any way you cut it, I'm spending at least $2,200 to rebuild the 361. But it would cost the same if I build a 383 or 440 so for right now, I might have to put the 361 away for a while and do something else.
