Feel free to email me pcperformance1@outlook.com or message me on instagram @cutter_performance if you have any questions during your build. Pat the 44 mm wastegate is big enough the problem is the placement of it. It vents the drivers side of the engine but the way that manifold is design it's not venting all cylinders on the passenger side.
    You would need to move the wastegate closer to the turbo. Right on the elbow where the pipe comes to the turbo flange so the wastegate has priority over all cylinders and then it will work good.
    I moved into the turbo LS but would love to do this with our c20.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  Рік тому +2

      Yeah, I know it is not the most ideal spot, but I thought it would be ok with that turbo...turns out no lol. I will probably keep this out and add another 44mm I have as well in a better location

  • @khalidrace773
    @khalidrace773 Рік тому +1

    Thank you Richard for this video and test. I built two destroked motors and they have more power on top end with a tight duration cam it has good torque also. The 327sbc made more power than the 350 so I’ve always understood the science. Thanks again!!

  • @itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852

    With a turbo it's all about the harmonics. Turbo boosting loads the down stroke when the charge gets ignited as well as the up stroke from back pressure of the exhaust having to spin the turbo wheel. With both sides loaded it dampens harmful harmonics that can cause catastrophic damage, kind of like brake torqueing when you launch at the dragstrip vs doing a neutral slam. Turbo charging is probably the safest power adder to use to make big power with factory parts because of the cushioning effect of being loaded in both directions.
    That's why LS engines can handle making so much power with the wimpy fasteners they are put together with because of the better harmonics that is train drivered into them. The firing order really helps an LS calm down harmful harmonics as well as the larger diameter camshaft, probably the number one advantages over the sbc. The LS firing order sbc camshafts are becoming more available and do help cut down harmonics but not as much as an LS because the LS cam diameter.
    IMO the sbc still has its place and is what I also prefer vs an LS as long as it is going into a Chevy vehicle. And they can be built to make even more power than an LS can make using the aftermarket components available for them. They make cylinder heads for a sbc that flow over 400 intake cfm I'm not sure the LS aftermarket support has reached that level yet?
    So now if you plan on running 800 + HP in the vehicle its going in you might want to consider a mid plate or a front plate to mount that thing or you can run into some problems from block distortion in the drivers side motor mount area. I have seen it happen to a boosted LS and a boosted small block Buick where the number 2 cylinder lets go. The only thing we could figure what was causing it was all that torque yanking on the drivers side motor mount causing the #2 cylinder to distort making it fail. I would imagine the same thing can happen to a sbc with lots of boosted torque on tap too? Cool build, good job.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  Рік тому +3

      Thats a really good point on the engine mounts vs mid plate. The centralized force on the block causes the cylinder to distort. Makes sense very smart

  • @SACAPerformance
    @SACAPerformance Рік тому +5

    I feel like the only thing the small block lacks is consumption of air. The Ls has the superior ignition system. Plus huge intake for more air to go through compared to a SBC. Air/fuel is all you need to make power. So the SBC just needs a little tweaking. I’ll say. But when done right! They’ll blow people away with the power it makes!

    I actually prefer the old school x rods over the powder metal rods for a boosted application. From my experience, the old school rods tend to just bend and the powder metal rods tend to break if you over power them. I've been boosting mild small block chevy motors for several years with blow through carbs. I also like using the Snow Performance water/meth kits, they work very well.

The "Old School" Stock Rod, with it's Pin, went up and down a few times in the cylinder until the Rod/Pin broke through the side of the block. No more engine turning, Everything came to dead stop. The Rod only bent into a slight S shape. No Breakage.

      true. in the end when youre building high HP stuff(higher than this like four digits) it aint gonna matter if its and LS or small block
      at that point it becomes a matter of cubic inches and cubic dollars and how much money you spend to spin the RPM and boost levels it takes to make serious steam

    I realize that this is a while back but, this SBC has a small turbo exhaust system(not diameter) but length. The first time I saw this was 89’ on a turbo Buick V6, comparing a regal exhaust system to a T/A exhaust. The T/A system was much shorter(different chassis clearance) the engineers calculated more energy was reaching the turbine and making much more power. They de-tuned the Buick V-6’s in the T/A’s cause it would have stomped the factory Corvettes.

    LS Cylinder Heads are what make them so good. They also can take a lot of power on stock bottom ends. When they came out SBC heads sucked in comparison, unless you were spending a lot of cash. Now we have a ton of affordable SBC heads. These DNA heads did well, especially when you consider the cost. I looked at LS swapping. A Summit engine swap kit is 1400 bucks Cdn, without headers. Then a tune/rework or something like Terminator or an MSD box if you want to run Carb. Based on the cost of swapping an LS into my first gen F body it's better to spend on a better set of heads.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  Рік тому +3

      Yeah exactly its 50 years of technology difference between the two. Ls swaps as often not nearly as cheap as some may think and may not make sense for some if you already have money invested into sbc parts. I go through that alot at the shop with guys wanting to LS swap for $1500 lol

    • @BDauto86
      @BDauto86 Рік тому +1

      It all depends on what you want and how you go about it.
      I turbo LS swapped my Fbody for relatively cheap, but I also had a budget in mind waited and watched for deals. Of course doing all the work myself, I used a basic 05 truck 5.3, which has the "gen4" rods/pistons
      I didn't rebuild engine, just cleaned/inspected inside when I swapped pans, resealed the known leak points, cam in and used same turbo pat has in this video.
      It's a solid combo that can cruise or rip.

I am thinking of doing a turbo set up on my next engine, it would be a 400, cheap ebay turbo set up, blow thru carb. Trying to figure out what to use for a good cheap turbo, i plan on only running like 5 psi of boost, on a low compression ratio 400, for torque and economy in a truck. Also trying to figure out what to get a cam ground too,, as far as specs. It would be a mechanical flat tappet cam in all likelihood.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  Рік тому +4

      Yeah, the GM head gaskets surprised me. I never used them with that kind of power before. The arp head bolts help alot.
      I can try to make a short video, but real quick, i will explain it.
      -A pre vortec sbc has a small passage from the water pump, through the block to a hole in the passenger side cylinder head
      -the passage allows a small amount of coolant to flow even when the thermostat is closed
      -Vortecs dont have this passage because the stock water pump and intake have a small hose that allows coolant to flow instead of the passage in the block.
      - Without this bypass, you can get major temp swings and overheating from air pockets stuck at the thermostat.
      A simple fix is to drill a few holes in the thermostat to allow a bit of coolant flow and prevent air pockets.

She said ya, 😂 I turned and looked at her with a smile and said, "Babe, don't worry. It's not that much, and remember! @Cutter's - Think I know the answer, but wanted to ask. The blow-thru carb is actually a fuel injected Atomic unit that directly bolts in place of a carb? And how long would say it took you to get a firm grip on programming the fuel curve throughout the RPM range with the Atomic? Did you use its ignition timing feature too? Lastly, do you know if the fuel injectors can be swapped out for larger ones?

    Old school 350 4340 internals and forged pistons 650 hp at 7500 rpm steel main caps arp bolts
    Block will fail much past that. I've seen 850 at short bursts then eventually boom.
    Ls small block chevt limit on stock parts about 1200 hp. They do often break at 1450. Even beefed up. Even with a girdle.
    Fully forged ls more reliable but block reaches its limits at 1450 or so.
    Bbc.stock internals 2 bolt on boost part block fill 650 hp. 6500 rpm
    Forged internals max rpm 7500, 1200 hp 4 bolt main arp studs.
    All engines fail if rpm is held for a long duration.

    I have a 1996 RCSB C1500 Silverado with LOW 130k original miles. I noticed you mentioned that the bottom end your using is all stock, cast crank and Forged rods and Hypereutectic Pistons. I want to maintain the factory 96 L31 Vortec setup. The engine I have in the truck right now is the original 2- bolt 880 block and it had the "powder metal rods" I THINK. not sure if being the 1st vortec series that it had the forged rods or PM rods?? Whats your opinion on those two rods? Either rod better or same For performance in NA or Boost? Also, I am torn between keeping the factory spider poppet style fuel injection system and manifold. Obviously I will have to upgrade to a much bigger upgraded spider system, I found on ebay. There is a seller who sells the "performance " versions of the New upgraded MPFI spider system in the 36lbs, 45lbs, and up to 60 or 80ish us lbs injectors replacing the poppet style with actual injectors at the poppet position, to be used in the factory plastic and aluminum 2 piece vortec manifold system. And also keeping all the factory electronics, computer, such as distributor, crank sensor, everything factory vortec. OR, ditching the fuel injection all together, keeping the long block and adding an aluminum intake and a 4 barrel carb, HEI distributor, ect, similar to your setup.....I don't need 700+ HP, it would be nice lol, but I do plan on driving it only as a weekend cruiser street machine and occasional strip truck and parked in the winter. Anyways, I am looking to produce 600HP TOPS! Realistically 500-550ish HP. What are your thoughts with the 1996 technology and trying to maintain it or just going carb and the use of what engine long block I have? PM or forged factory rods? I do have a set of rods out of a 98-99 chevy L31 Vortec 5.7 sbc HD2500 suburban and I am convinced those are PM rods, they do not look like the rods in my 96, plus the rods look like the gm performance rods on GMs site. Sorry for the rambling. Rod version is a concern and deciding on keeping the vortec fuel injection or going carb are my concerns. I do plan on a 4l80e and possibly a 4:11 4:56 ish ratio. Im looking to hear thoughts from everyone.

      The GM Powdered rods are quite strong. I built a chevelle with a 355 two bolt 880 block and a torqstorm supercharger, making 500 to 550hp for the last 3 years now.
      Add arp bolts to those rods, add ring gap to the piston rings, with proper tuning youll be suprised how much they will take.
      The rods in this video are from a early vortec and are not powered metal, they took a beating aswell with no issues
